PLAYER of the WEEK - YEAR

Player of the Year; Mar 06, 1999
Shannon Perry - What a career for this La Salle
senior. The Michael Jordan of RIHS Girls' Basketball. She can do
it all. Her team was undefeated in league play.
Week #12; Feb 27, 1999 (two games drag into next week)
Shannon Perry - La Salle went undefeated in league action
this year, thanks to "you know who". Shannon had 29 in their
final win which was against St. Ray's, 64-63. (St. Ray's two 
loses were both at the hands of La Salle.) Shannon had 21 earlier
in the week in their 69-53 win over Cranston West.
Carleen Aubee - Ponaganset finished with two wins
to finish in third place in the North. Carleen had 17 in the win
over Woonsocket; 25 against East Providence.
Sarah Tift - North wins the Southern Division. 
Sarah had a great week, hopefully back at 100% after another
head injury. She had 17 in the win over Coventry and in their
big title game with Toll Gate, she came through with 28.
Stephanie Petreccia - The West Warwich
senior co-captain, #22, had a great week. She is also a very 
good defensive player. She scored 13 in the win over SK and
21 in the win over Chariho.
Sarah Stanhope - South Kingstown's senior got
her 1,000th point against West Warwick. She's been on a roll 
since the team's first league win over Rogers three weeks ago.
She had a great senior night with 25 against Chariho and had
27 in her last home game when the Rebels knocked Westerly out of
the playoffs.
Week #11; Feb 20, 1999
East Greenwich - Three teams had big weeks,
insuring themselves a spot in the upcoming playoffs. East
Greenwich beat SK. Marie Audet had five 3-pointers. Then
they beat Chariho in OT. Catherine Feeney had 14.
Cranston West - They beat Ponaganset. Dolan
had 16. They beat Bay View. Heather Pettigrew had 23.
Classical - They beat Woonsocket. Fatou Cissoko
had 24. She had 14 in the win over East Providence. 
Week #10; Feb 13, 1999
West Warwick - Two wins. They beat Pilgrim, 46-36,
and previously unbeaten North Kingstown, 53-43. Contributing with
double figures were Natalie Andrus (10vsPI); Alex Dunton
(13vsNK), Nina Bliss (12vsPI & 14vsNK), and Diana Alvarez
(15vsNK).
Week #9; Feb 06, 1999
Shannon Perry - The La Salle senior got
her 2,000th point. Congratulations, Shannon.
Sarah Stanhope - The South Kingstown senior co-captain
had a very good week. Her 20 points against Rogers got SK their
first league win. She also scored 23 in a loss to Toll Gate.
Nicole Curci - The Smithfield senior had a
19 point game as Smithfield beat Ponaganset by one point,
45-44. She had 12 in their 49-29 win over Bay View, a win
which hurt Bay View's playoff chances.
Week #8; Jan 30, 1999
Pilgrim - Pilgrim is playing well. Two wins
in the last week plus three wins in their last three games.
Although the playoffs are doubtful, they deserve a lot of 
credit for improving their play from week to week.
Liz Shields seems to be the team's big scorer. She
had 17 against Chariho and 23 against Rogers.
Bay View - Bay View is on the playoff bubble,
at .500 currently. They beat Providence and Cumberland to
keep their hopes alive. Katie Blaha had 24 and 
Meredith McGair had 22 for the week.
Week #7; Jan 23, 1999
Shannon Perry - La Salle established themselves
as the premier team with wins over two of the best, Ponaganset
and St. Ray's. For the week, Shannon had 32 vs Ponaganset, 20 vs
Cranston West, and 26 vs St. Ray's. Not bad!
Week #6; Jan 16, 1999
Erika Paiva & Naimah Abdullah - St. Raphael
is still undefeated after wins over Classical and Ponaganset.
Naimah, a freshman, scored 24 in the win or blowout over
Classical. Erika, a junior, scored 23 in the 68-50 win over
previously unbeaten Ponaganset.
Meg Almon - The East Greenwich junior is 
very quick. She is very hard to double team. Aggressive, she
draws many fouls as she drives to the hoop. She had a good
game against South Kingstown.
Week #3-5; Jan 09, 1999
Kerri Serois - The Chariho sophomore (?)
destroyed South Kingstown with her second half shooting
to give Chariho its first league win of the year. She had 20 of
her 24 points in the second half. She had four three pointers.
Toll Gate - It was a long week, including pre
Christmas. Most teams should have played three but didn't because
of snow on Jan 8th. Toll Gate, which moved up a later game with
Pilgrim, managed to win three. Holly Hummel had 14 and 16
in the wins against Chariho and Pilgrim. Lauren Jackson
and Erin Randall were the big guns in the win against
Rogers. Lauren had 21; Erin 24. Toll Gate is undefeated in the 
South, along with North Kingstown. North, La Salle, St. Ray's,
and Coventry won both their games played in the three week span.
[Son of a gun, they played 10/09 and beat East Greenwich.
Acciaioli had 16, Holly Hummel, 15 for Toll 
Gate.]
Week #1-2; Dec 19, 1998
Lots-a-players - Most teams are three games into
the season with some playing two (missing NK-Rogers game which
may have been rescheduled). Undefeated (and their leaders) are 
Ponaganset (Kendra Nerbonne), La Salle (Shannon Perry), St. 
Raphael (Jackie Fournier), North Kingstown (Sarah Tift), and 
Toll Gate (Erin Randall).

At long last, La Salle girls claim the crown

Rams complete perfect season with 51-28 victory
over North Kingstown to capture the Girls' Division I
title.

PROVIDENCE -- Rack up all the wins in the world, but
there's a certain sense of validation that comes with
winning the "big one" down the stretch.
  La Salle coach Leo Butler watched his Rams prove "they
were the best team in Rhode Island from start to
finish," as they capped a perfect season with their
first state championship in the program's 14-year
history.
  La Salle overcame a sluggish first half and steamrolled
to a 51-28 victory over North Kingstown to capture the
Girls' Division I title at the Credit Union Classic
Interscholastic League High School Basketball
Championships before a roaring crowd at the Civic
Center.
  "A lot of people have never seen us play," said Rams'
senior forward Shannon Perry after leading the I-North
champions with a game-high 24 points, 21 rebounds and 7
steals. "They just see in the paper that we're
undefeated. Now they've seen us. Now they see that this
is the real thing.
  "This is a feeling I can't even explain," added
Perry, who was named MVP of the tournament. "In four
years, we've come real close and today we did it. I
just hope all the little girls coming up can experience
this one day."
  Despite boasting one of the most talented teams in the
state for the last few years, La Salle had continually
fallen short come playoff time. The Rams suffered a
semifinal loss to Ponaganset in 1997 and then fell to
North Kingstown in last year's semis.
  La Salle broke the jinx Wednesday night, though, as
Perry's 34-point performance propelled her team to a
55-48 victory over Ponaganset, ending the Chieftains'
six-year reign in the process and earning the Rams
their first trip to the Civic Center in 12 years.
  "There certainly was a sense of urgency and
frustration," Butler said of his team's missed
opportunities over the years. "I felt for kids like
Shannon Perry, Sue Dyer and Amy Brennan who had worked
hard for four years and still hadn't had a chance to
showcase themselves at the Civic Center. In Rhode
Island, this is the place to come and prove who is No.
1."
  Though La Salle had handily defeated North Kingstown by
30 points in the North-South Challenge last November,
the Rams didn't put much weight on the early lopsided
win, knowing the I-South champions had undoubtedly
improved since then and more importantly remembering
all too well, last year's upset to the Skippers.
  Indeed, North Kingstown had posted another upset in
this year's playoffs, upending St. Raphael, 57-55, to
earn a return trip to the finals.
  The score did stay close through the first 16 minutes
of yesterday's game, as both teams had an unusually
tough time putting the ball in the basket.
  La Salle managed to take the lead on two free throws by
Kate Lally at 10:35, but had difficulty getting into
any kind of a flow.
  Amy Brennan hit a 15-footer from the baseline to put
the Rams up, 16-8, at halftime, closing out an
amazingly low-scoring half.
  Still, Butler was encouraged.
  "Obviously we were a little tight. I think North
Kingstown was too," he said. "But even though we were
only up 16-8 at halftime, we felt good. The bottom line
was we felt we played great defense to hold them to
eight points. And we were getting good looks, but the
ball just wasn't rolling. So we knew it was just a
matter of time before they start falling in the second
half. That basket by Brennan really got us going. It
gave us a little edge going into the locker room."
  Perry kicked it into overdrive after that, pouring in
15 points to lead a 23-6 drive over the first six
minutes of the second half.
  The 25-0 Rams caused all kinds of problems for North
Kingstown with its full-court press, and the Skippers
were never able to recover.
  "Coach Butler gave us a nice talk at halftime," Perry
said. "He just said to calm down and everything would
be all right if we played good defense. We came into
the second half just running. Every shot that went up,
went in."
  Patty Fitzgerald was back in the Rams' lineup after
missing the last two games with a sprained ankle. The
6-foot junior forward contributed 10 points, four
rebounds and two assists to the winning effort.
  Dyer, La Salle's senior point guard, chipped in seven
points and collected four assists.
  "They play strong defense," North Kingstown coach
Burny Guidry said. "That made it very difficult for
our girls to get in position. They're tough to beat."
  Tift paced the Skippers with 13 points, nine rebounds
and three steals. Nicole Campbell finished with nine
points.
