Just some kids, in no particular order, averaging 15 points per game.
Eleven players averaged 15 or better last year.
It's looking like about 12 will do it in '97-'98.
(It would be nice to have rebounds, assists, turnovers,blocked shots, steals, etc. Unfortunately the paper doesn't print those stats. Please help SCFun correct its errors/omissions! 1/28/98 - This started out to be kids averaging 15, then some fell below but SCFun didn't want to eliminate them. Then SCFun discovered (that) almost every school was represented so it tried to put someone on the list from each school.)

PLAYER of the WEEK - YEAR

Player of the Year; Mar 06, 1998
Nicole Campbell - A junior from North Kingstown, Nicole is an
outstanding athlete. She was a big reason why North Kingstown lost
only one league game this season. She can do it all at both ends of
the court. If SCFun University existed, Nicole would be the first
Rhode Island player on its "to recruit" list for next year.
Week #10+; Feb 21, 1998 (thru 2/24/98)
Meg McGonagle - It was a great week (plus) for
many players. Meg, a senior from Pilgrim and only one of two players
to average over 20 points this season, had outstanding performances
against West Warwick, Bay View, and Coventry. She scored 19, 25,
and 22 in her team's three wins.
Michaela Lindeman - The Cranston West senior had three
impressive performances as Cranston West goes into the playoffs as the
number one team in the Central Division. Michaela scored 17, 14, and
17 in wins over Bay View, Coventry, and Cranston East.
Heather Dandrow, Brianne Doyle, Emily Winsor - The 
Ponaganset trio led the team as they finished the season on a high
note (not that there ever was a low one) with three wins. They must be
considered a favorite to "win it all" again this year. Two of the wins
were over big guns La Salle and St. Raphael with the third coming over
Central.
Nicole Curci - Smithfield was on the playoff bubble.
Nicole burst that bubble, assuring a playoff spot for Smithfield.
Nicole led Smithfield to two wins over Central (10 points) and
Woonsocket (21).
Week #9; Feb 14, 1998
Casey Fullerton - Rogers is still in the running for a
playoff spot. Casey, a senior, had a great game against South
Kingstown. She has a lot of moves and looks like she really enjoys
playing the game. She had 14 in Rogers' 55-32 win over SK and later
on in the week had 12 points as Rogers nipped Westerly, 48-45.
Jackie Fournier and Erika Paiva - The two St. Raphael
sophomores combined for 52 points in their 72-57 win over East
Providence. Jackie had 29 while Erika had 23. In their 68-51 win over
Cumberland, Jackie had 8 while Erika had 17.
Week #8; Feb 07, 1998
Meg Daniel - It looks like Toll Gate will make the playoffs.
Meg, a senior, had a good week as Toll Gate beat Coventry and Cranston
East. Meg, a consistent performer all season, had a game high 13
(along with Lauren Jackson) against Coventry and another game high 10
points against Cranston East.
Alex Dunton or Dutton - West Warwick is right on the bubble.
Will they make the playoffs? It they do, Alex will have been a big 
contributor. This week, she led the Wizards with 14 in their win
against Coventry and she chipped in nine in their win against Bay
View.
Week #7; Jan 31, 1998
Meg McGonagle - Meg, a Pilgrim senior, had a big week,
a 3-game week. She scored 25 against North Kingstown, 33 at Westerly,
and 23 against Rogers. The win against North was North's first loss
of the season. At the end of the week, Pilgrim was tied with Cranston
West atop the Central Division with a 10-2 record.
Katie Blahah - The Bay View freshman is impressive. She
plays center and has some good moves to go along with her good size.
She scored 17 against South Kingstown and 13 against Rogers.
Week #6; Jan 24, 1998
Heather Dandrow - Heather kept Ponaganset on La Salle's
tail with two great performances. She scored 21 in their 68-56 win
over St. Raphael in a battle for second place. She then scored 19 as
Ponaganset beat Woonsocket, 47-35.
Marisa Justice, Jess Kenerson, Katie Parkinson, & Sarah 
Stanhope - South Kingstown won their first league game of the 
season (58-42 over West Warwick) thanks to great teamwork all-around
- everyone contributed. Marisa had 11 including three 3-pointers. Jess
had 12. Katie Parkinson was big under the boards. Sarah had 18 and a
great defensive game.
Week #5; Jan 17, 1998
Nicole Campbell - Nicole had a great week for
Southern Division leader North Kingstown. The junior scored 29 against
Cranston East and 15 points against West Warwick to keep North in
first place at 8-0.
Erika Paiva - A sophomore, Erika scored 25 against
Classical and 23 against Smithfield to keep St. Ray's within one game
of undefeated La Salle.
Week #4; Jan 10, 1998
Becca Newman - Becca, a Chariho sophomore, had a
great game against South Kingstown, scoring 18 points. She has much
potential and can do it all despite her average size. A good
leaper/rebounder, she can also drive the lane, pull-up and pop, and
shoot from the outside. Her defense is great too!
Christine Kane & Casie Rhodes - The two East Greenwich
seniors continue to lead their team and General Sherman on their
"March through Georgia". EG will be a final four team and could go all
the way. Rhodes scored 31, including her 1,000th point, while Kane had
38 in their two wins over Cranston East and Rogers.
Week #3-split; Jan 03, 1998
Alainna Schiano - "Slim pickins" over the past two
weeks, in which most teams didn't see too much league action. However,
there was an outstanding performance by Alainna Schiano, the Cranston
West senior. She scored 33 points (the most this season by an
individual in Division I?) against Coventry to keep CW atop the
central division with a perfect 5-0 record. She only had one 3-pointer
but hit on 16 of 19 free throws.
Week #2; Dec 20, 1997
Shannon Perry - Shannon, the La Salle junior, could be
Player of the Week just about any old week. She is considered by most
people to be the best player in the state. Let's give her the award
this week for 28 and 29 points against Woonsocket and East Providence.
Hopefully, she'll give other kids a chance the rest of the way.
Week #1+; Dec 13, 1997
Sarah Tift - In deference to Santa Claus, who lobbied 
very hard for her selection, Sarah Tift, the North Kingstown junior,
is SCFun's "Player of the Week". She had 25 points and 25 rebounds
(Santa won't let you forget those rebounds) against Rogers and 22
points against South Kingstown, to get North off to a 2-0 start.

Ponaganset wins 56-43.

  Is there such a thing as a six-peat?
  There is now, thanks to the Ponaganset girls basketball
team.
  The Chieftains, who have made the Civic Center their
home in recent years, continued to reign supreme at
last night's Credit Union Classic.
  Junior forward Carleen Aubee netted 15 points and was
named her team's Player of the Game, as Ponaganset
defeated North Kingstown, 56-43, for an unprecedented
six-straight state titles in the Interscholastic
League's Division I girls championship.
  The Chieftains, who have compiled a 273-18 record over
the past 11 years, now lay claim to 11 division titles
and 7 state titles (one in Division II).
  "It's always a challenge every time," said coach Paul
Shawver, who started the Ponaganset dynasty 19 years
ago. "It's great to see the progress from the
beginning of the year to the end of the year. We work
so much on fundamentals, on skills, on passing the
ball. We do things no other team does. I take a lot of
satisfaction in the fact that generally our team is
much better at the end of the year than it was at the
beginning.
  "It's also a pride factor, too. You know that
everybody's out to beat you, and it's a challenge to
face all comers."
  Talk in basketball circles all season was that
Ponaganset's biggest nemesis would be La Salle and that
the two teams would undoubtedly meet in yesterday's
final. The teams had battled to a share of the I-North
crown with their lone losses being to each other.
  North Kingstown had other plans in mind, though, as the
Skippers upset La Salle, 62-52, in the semifinals
earlier this week. The top-seeded Chieftains earned
their ninth championship appearance in 11 years with
decisive victories over Toll Gate and Cranston West.
  "We heard they (North Kingstown) had played an almost
flawless game (against La Salle), so we knew they were
going to come out ready to play," said senior guard
Heather Dandrow, who finished with 10 points and was
named the tournament MVP. "But we also heard through
the grapevine that they were just happy to be on the
Civic Center floor, and we planned on taking advantage
of that right off the bat. They were just happy to be
here, and we wanted to win."
  North Kingstown kept it close through the first 10
minutes or so of the first half. Two free throws by the
Skippers' Sarah Tift (15 points) and a three-pointer by
Nicole Campbell (14 points) evened the score at 14-14
with 5:27 to play.
  Then Ponaganset turned up the heat, rattling off 12
unanswered points in two minutes, including 6 by
Dandrow.
  "In past playoff games, we've started off really
slow," said Ponaganset senior forward Emily Winsor.
  "So all of a sudden, we said, 'Hey, we've got to pick
it up and step it up and start beating them by more.'
We didn't want to lose this game at all, so we just
decided everyone together that we were going to start
scoring quickly."
  The Chieftains capitalized on 17 North Kingstown
turnovers -- 9 against the press -- to establish a
32-21 lead at the break.
  "We knew we had to come out in a full-court man-to-man
press," said Dandrow. "That's what we did against
Cranston West, and they folded under it. We did the
same thing tonight, and North Kingstown folded under
it."
  Ponaganset pulled away in the second half, leading by
as many as 19 points three different times. A basket by
Aubee put the Chieftains up, 50-31, with 51/2 minutes
remaining.
  The Skippers followed with a 12-2 run and made it 52-43
with a Chelsea Osbrey foul shot with 42 seconds left.
But that's as close as they would get.
  "We didn't handle the press very well most of the
night," said North Kingstown coach Mike Kelley. "The
kids got flustered a little bit, we went out of our
scheme, and then it was helter skelter. And that's a
tribute to Ponaganset. They press very well.
  "But I'm really proud of my team. Even when they were
tired, they extended the floor and went man-to-man.
They worked really hard. They could have tanked it and
lost by 25, but they didn't quit right to the very end.
What more can a coach ask of his team?""
