Here's the Providence Journal article. We all make our share of mistakes but the Journal always seems to make MORE than their share. SCFun won't correct the oversights or errors. EAST PROVIDENCE - Kim Lanzire and Shellie Parkinson have been in the right place at the right time all season. Yesterday was no different. Parkinson, South Kingstown's standout goaltender, made three key saves in a game-ending shootout that beat East Greenwich, 2-1, while Mt. Hope star Lanzire nailed down the Huskies' 2-1 win over Barrington in Division I semifinals at Pierce Memorial Field. Appropriately, the Huskies and Rebels, who finished in a dead heat for the division title, and tied two regular-season games, meet tomorrow night for the Division I MetLife Soccer Championship. The Rebels had to hold off a fired-up East Greenwich, who tied the game, 1-1, on a Christine Kane goal, then battled South Kingstown on even terms through the second half and two overtime periods. Then the Avs had to go one-on-one against Parkinson in a winner-take-all shootout. No easy task. After Kerri Vetovis put East Greenwich ahead, 2-1, in the shootout, Parkinson was unbeatable. She knocked away Catin Rooney's sizzler with a dive halfway across the net, leaped to snare Ali Peake's drive, then stepped to her left, right in front of a Michaela Keegan blast headed for the corner. Meanwhile, goals by teammates Liz Horton and Ellen Histen had given the Rebs a 3-2 edge, and the victory. Parkinson, a senior, said the Rebs have always been "the team in-waiting. East Greenwich beat us in a heartbreaker last year." She was determined that it wasn't going to happen again last night. "I just told myself, `You have to get the ball; don't think.' So I just put my brain away and let my body act. "It's my senior year. I didn't want it to be my last game," she said. In the Barrington-Mount Hope opener, Lanzire slammed home the ball that had squirted out of the grasp of the Barrington goaltender into an open net, giving the Huskies a berth in the championship game. It was the third time the Huskies had beaten the Eagles this season, and Kimberly Lanzire knew it wouldn't be easy. "Beating Barrington again was going to be hard, because they are one of the best teams in the league," she said. Kim's sister, Kendra Lanzire, who had scored the Huskies' first-half goal, set up the game-winner. With less than four minutes left in regulation, Kendra Lanzire unloaded a shot from the 18-yard line that Eagle goalie Alice Keeney stopped with a diving save, but as she hit the ground, the ball came loose. "She went to catch it and I think it hit the side of her arm. I had an open net," Kim Lanzire said. The Eagles dominated the first half, with Rachel Korber and Kathryn Purcell marking Kim Lanzire and Kerri Ferreira, the division's top scorers. "They said they were going to mark us tight and they certainly did," Kimberly Lanzire said. "Rachel Korber marked me so well, I was slipping all over the place." MH - Medeiros 5EAST PROVIDENCE - Mt. Hope stayed with what worked. Kim Lanzire and Kerri Ferreira, the Huskies' dynamic duo, who led the Interscholastic League in scoring with 19 goals apiece, scored two more last night as Mt. Hope won the Division I MetLife Soccer championship in its first try, 2-1, over South Kingstown at breezy cold Pierce Memorial Field. Lanzire and Ferreira, both 1995 All-Staters, had led the Huskies to Division II championships the last two seasons, and into a first-place tie with South Kingstown this year with an unstoppable scoring punch. Why change the game plan? The Huskies came out swinging, took a quick 1-0 lead on a Kim Lanzire goal off a Ferreira pass at the nine-minute mark, then took a 2-0 lead four minutes into the second half when Ferreira scored off a Lanzire assist. Shortly thereafter, the Rebels, who had lost only once during the regular season, and battled the Huskies to a pair of 1-1 ties, took away Mt. Hope's momemtum and made it very much a ball game when Katie Parkinson knocked in a Lindsay Fish corner kick. At that point, the Rebs, making their ninth appearance in a MetLife title game, started taking it to the Huskies. "It got crazy out there," said Mt. Hope senior midfielder Kendra Lanzire, Kimberly's sister. "South Kingstown gave us a run for our money. They were putting so much pressure on us at the end of the game I thought it would go down to overtime," said Kendra Lanzire, one of the Huskies' unsung heroines. "I was getting kind of nervous, but we played our hearts out to the last second and did it. We won." After Parkinson's goal, the South had three of the next four shots, two by Meghan Moore, and free kick off the foot of Kate Dougan that nicked the crossbar. With less then two minutes left, Fish banged another Dougan direct over the net. It wasn't the way South Kingstown's goaltender Shellie Parkinson wanted her high school career to end. "We started back in July," she said, after making 15 saves. "We practiced in 100-degree weather, in the cold, the rain, in anything, we were out there. We never gave up. "So right now I'm pretty disappointed, but I can't be disappointed in our efforts, just the results." "We were so dedicated. We had the drive, the intensity and the heart. We had a great team," she said. None of that was enough last night however. Ferreira, a senior, and Kim Lanzire, a junior, were all over Parkinson in the first half and in the second half before the Rebs broke through. Although the shots were pretty even in the opening 40 minutes, all but one of Huskies' were on target, while Mt. Hope goaltender Carmen Medeiros was called upon to make two saves in the first half, five all night. The highest-scoring team in the division, Mt. Hope hit the ground running, with Ferreira forcing Shellie Parkinson to make two saves before five minutes had elapsed. Minutes later, Ferreira broke down the middle and shoveled the ball ahead to Kim Lanzire, roaring in from the right wing. It was a scene familiar to Mt. Hope fans. Lanzire moved in and unloaded a hard-angle shot behind Parkinson that one-hopped into the corner of the net. Parkinson saw a lot more of the Huskies' duo for the remainder of the half, with Ferreria sending four shots her way and Lanzire two. With strong midfield kicks from Kendra Lanzire, Mt. Hope had the territorial advantage in the opening 40 minutes. But South, who lost midfielder Anne Montgomery with a knee injury 13 minutes into the game, had a couple of chances to get on the scoreboard. The best came 11 minutes in when Fish chipped a tough-angle shot off the right post. Ferreira got what proved to be the game-winner after Kim Lanzire did most of the work, four minutes into the second half. Kim Lanzire battled the ball away from a pair South Kingstown defenders on the right sidelines, then broke down the wing and made a perfect cross to Ferreira, who beat a defender, then Parkinson, with a shot off the right post. Katie Parkinson's header got the Rebels fired up, but the Huskies had enough left to hold on to their biggest win yet. "We knew (South) wasn't going to quit," Ferreira said, "but stayed together, played hard, and came out on top." By BUD BARKER Journal-Bulletin Sports Writer
