- Lauren Testa - Tremendous defensive player for South Kingstown. Has all the tools. Wins 99.9% of her "battles" and gets the ball moving in the right direction. Communicates well. Always assigned to guard the opponent's offensive threat.
- Morgan Page - The Westerly senior led the league in scoring. (What would she have done on a better team?) Tremendous athlete, always gives 100%. Can go from "0 to 60" in 2.9 seconds. A force to be reckoned with.

Attendance - 350.Huskies, Rebels post 2-1 wins in semis Mt. Hope back in finals with shootout victory over Barrington EAST PROVIDENCE - South Kingstown and Mt. Hope knocked off top seeds last night and advanced to the Division I finals. Mt. Hope, the defending state champion, beat second-place Barrington, 2-1, in a shootout that featured some great goaltending from sophomore Carmen Medeiros in the second game of the doubleheader at Pierce Stadium. South Kingstown, with two goals from sophomore Katie Parkinson, edged regular-season champion East Greenwich, 2-1, in the opener of the MetLife Soccer Classic. The Rebels and Huskies play for the state title Saturday at 6 p.m. Barrington had beaten the Huskies, 7-0 and 2-0 during the regular season, and the Huskies were determined not to get beat again, said Kim Lanzire, who gave Mt. Hope a 1-0 lead in the first half of a very physical game between the East Bay neighbors. "We just played a better game than we did in the first two meetings," Lanzire said. "We told ourselves if we didn't let them score in the first half it would be a different game. I think they came in thinking they were going win, beat us for the third time," she said. The Eagles made it 1-1 11 minutes into the second half when a tripping call in the area gave Carly Williamson a penalty shot. Williamson drilled the ball into the left corner, out of Medeiros' reach. Barrington lost sweeper Jessica Sultzer in the first minute of overtime when she went down with a hip injury. She was taken to a hospital by rescue. When play resumed, Barrington goaltender Jessica Broomhead came up with key stops on Lanzire in the two scoreless 10-minute overtimes, sending the match to a shootout. It wasn't where the Huskies wanted to go, Lanzire said. "We didn't want a shootout; we thought they were a better team than us on penalty shots, but our keeper did an awesome job."' Medeiros stopped the Eagles' first shooter, Williamson, with great diving save, then fisted away a bullet by Joanna Principe. In the meantime, Lanzire had given Mt. Hope the shootout lead with a shot into the right corner, and Jordan Shireman made it 2-0 with blast to the top of the cage. The Eagles got within a shot on goals by Jessica Rasmussen and Courtney Frye. In between, Jen Sa scored for the Huskies. Medeiros clinched the win with a save against Kristin Gladney. The shootouts are a guessing game, Medeiros said. "It's tough. You pick a side, dive, and hope for the best," she said. In the opener, South got both goals from Parkinson, who grew up taking shots at her sister, former All-State goalkeeper, Shelly Parkinson. Shelly graduated last year, but Katie maintained the family tradition by helping the Rebels get into their 10th championship game. They have won four state titles, the last in 1988. The Rebels have been on a roll, after losing 1-0 to Westerly late in the season. They knocked Barrington out of first place with a 2-0 win on the final day of the season, then advanced to the semifinals with a 3-1 win over North Kingstown. Parkinson, who worked a lot of seasons shooting soccer balls at her sister in the family backyard, kept the Rebels on track with chip-shot goal at the 28-minute mark. Avengers sweeper Keri Vetovis had cut off South's Liz Horton in the middle, but Horton was able to get the ball to Parkinson on the wing. Parkinson lofted a shot just out of the reach of East Greenwich goaltender Casie Rhodes. "I wasn't aiming," Parkinson said. "The ball was there and I saw the net. It was like slow-motion. I was laying on the ground and saw the ball go in." Parkinson scored what turned out to be the game-winner with only seconds left in the half. After several players battled for the ball at the top of the penalty area, somebody headed it toward the goal, and Parkinson was right there to chip another one over Rhodes' head. The Avs, who had defeated and tied the Rebels during the regular season, were just outplayed in the first half, getting only a couple of good shots at the SK goal, while the Rebels were pounding away at Rhodes. The Avs made it close when sweeper Kerri Vetovis rapped in a penalty shot at the 64-minute mark, but couldn't come with anything else. "We were nervous; we just didn't have it tonight," EG midfielder Christine Kane said. By BUD BARKER Journal-Bulletin Sports Writer

Attendance - 351.Borrelli paces Rebels over Huskies EAST PROVIDENCE - Last night, South Kingstown found what it had been looking for all season - a goal-scorer. Senior Tammy Borrelli more than filled that role as the Rebels scored three goals in the first 14 minutes of the second half to beat defending champion Mt. Hope, 3-1, in the Division I championship game of the MetLife Soccer Classic at Pierce Stadium. "Tammy Borrelli, she did it," said South coach Jim Kelly, whose Rebels knocked off regular-season champion East Greenwich in the semifinals. "The team that should have been here, is here." Borrelli tied the match at 1-1 when she took a a header from Ellen Histen passed and beat past Mt. Hope goaltender Carmen Medeiros. The goal was set up by Chelsea Wetherell's throw-in. Histen put the Rebels in front with a spectacular goal nine minutes later. The South speedster, who splits playing time with forward Katie Parkinson, spun a Mt. Hope defender around in the far left corner, then raced along the end line and beat Medeiros with a shot into the far corner. One minute later, Borrelli let all the air out of the Huskies' balloon when she came barrelling down the left wing with a pass from Histen and unloaded a shot that found the top corner. Medeiros expressed the feelings of her teammates and the Mt. Hope fans at the 17th annual MetLife Classic. She knelt on the goal line, holding her head in her hands. "I had a gut feeling from the beginning of the season that we were going to make it," Borrelli said. In fact, Borrelli wrote a poem before the game to convince her teammates of her feelings. She read it to them on the bus ride from Wakefield. The poem said it was time to show everybody what the Rebels had. "Nobody thought we would be here, and we have proved everyone wrong," Borrelli said. Even at halftime, when South trailed, 1-0, and the team's mood was somber, Borrelli said the SK players vowed to come out believing in themselves in the second half. "We did and it happened," she said. "When we got that third goal, they lost their confidence and we got ours. I knew it was coming." Mt. Hope coach Doug Lanzire, coaching his last game before retiring, knew it was happening, too. "We just seemed to get deflated after that third goal," he said. "There weren't enough hungry people in front of the goal." The fire that scorched Barrington in the semifinals wasn't there, Lanzire said, though he didn't want to take anything awy from South Kingstown, which won its first state title since 1983. "South deserves the win; they were the better team," Lanzire said. There was no lack of fire from the Huskies' Kim Lanzire, their hustling power forward who put them in front at 26 minutes of the first half. Her goal, like Histen's took some fancy footwork. Lanzire was surrounded in the left corner when she danced around one, two, then three Rebels to unload a bullet at goaltender Sarah --------------------------------------------------------------------- "I had a gut feeling from the beginning of the season that we were going to make it. . . . Nobody thought we would be here, and we have proved everyone wrong." TAMMY BORRELLI, South Kingstown player --------------------------------------------------------------------- Stanhope from in close. Stanhope had no chance, the ball zipped into the far corner before she could react. Lanzire made Stanhope come up with several other good stops, before and after the Rebels' three-goal outburst. "We know Kim Lanzire is going to get one," Kelly said. But against a Kate Dougan-led defense that was among the best in the league this season, Kelly doubted there would be any more. Histen, the MVP of the tournament, had two assists in addition to her goal. Parkinson played another aggressive game after starring in the Rebels' semifinal win over East Greenwich last week.
