LINCOLN - East Providence was one point away from the
state finals last night when it ran into trouble,
trouble of Titanic proportion, in the CCRI fieldhouse.
Leading two games to none, and ahead 14-9 in game
three, the Townies were stonewalled by Toll Gate. The
Titans caught fire, tied game three on a service ace by
Caitlin Machon, took the lead on a Sarah Hines block,
and won it, 16-14, on an East Providence error.
The Townies were crushed and never got back to the
terrific play that carried them to 15-13, 15-8
victories in the first two games.
"We stopped playing when it was 14-9 in that third
game," East Providence coach Luis Carvalho said, "and
we couldn't get the motor running again."
They couldn't get it sputter or cough, either. It was
dead after the third-game stunner. After looking so
good early, the Townies lost their composure, and were
never in the next two games in which they scored a
combined 10 points, and practically watched the Titans
roll into tonight's Class A Championship with 15-4 and
15-6 wins that capped the most incredible comeback.
Setter Meggan Daniel said the Titans, the defending
state champions, just didn't want to lose that winning
feeling.
"We are young, but incredible," she said. "We had
too much desire to lose."
The Titans, who have only four seniors on their roster,
play their archrival, unbeaten regular-season champion
North Kingstown, next Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Toll Gate
beat the Skippers for the title last year.
North rolled over South Division rival Pilgrim 3-0 in
the second match of the Class A semifinal doubleheader.
Using a variety of different offensive looks, a variety
of set plays masterminded by setter Jill McEwen and
executed by hitters Diane Dynon, Linda Ferencko and
Tracie Andrew, the Skippers rolled over the Pats, 15-3,
15-3, and 15-4.
McEwen said the Skippers will be ready for Toll Gate
Tuesday night.
"It's going to be a revenge match," she said. "We
are a totally different team this year. We care about
each other and get along so well that we are
unstoppable. We are friends and teammates, and you
can't beat that."
McEwen said great coaching and long practices have made
the Skippers unbeaten this year. "We practice and
practice 'til we get it perfect. Then we get it perfect
in the games," she said.
As usual, the Pats got a gutsy performance from senior
Meaghan McGonagle in her final appearance.
The night though belonged to the Titans - and the
Townies, who were every bit as dominating in the first
two games and 14 points as the Titans were in their
blistering finish.
The Townies, who tied North Smithfield for the North
Division title, had a number of heroes staking out a
two-game lead. None was bigger than hustling setter
Sofia Carvalho, who was all over the court, making
dazzling saves when she wasn't setting up impressive
hits by Melissa DiQuinzio, Michaela Murphy, and Tianna
Lopes Speaks.
The Titans marched into the championship game with
sterling performances from Daniel, Caroline Boggs,
Kristen Acciaioli, Lindsay Ryan, Holly Hummel, and
Caitlin Machon.
Daniel said the third-game comeback did it. "We felt if
we could come back from that deficit, we could do
anything."
  And they did.

Jun 09, 1998 (Game #F1): Toll Gate vs North Kingstown at CCRI
   Toll Gate 8 6 15 15 13 -- 2
   North Kingstown 15 15 9 2? 15 -- 3
LINCOLN - It looked like Toll Gate had North Kingstown
just where it wanted it last night when the Titans lost
the first two games of Class A Championship match.
Everyone in the packed Flanagan fieldhouse on the
CCRI-Lincoln campus knew what happened to East
Providence when the Titans were in a similar situation
in last week's semifinals.
The Titans came back and beat the Townies, and had the
Skippers on the ropes last night, when they tied the
match with solid victories in games three and four of
the Interscholatic League tournament sponsored by the
Providence Journal-Bulletin.
Although Toll Gate coach Jim Roch kept telling his team
it had all night to have fun, time finally ran out on
the Titans' bid for another miracle comeback.
"We didn't go out as smooth as we wanted to," said
North coach Joanne Fitts, who is stepping down as the
girls coach at NK, "but I attribute that to what Toll
Gate was doing. They rose to the occasion, and played
real hard."
Diane Dynon, the match's Most Valuable Player, broke a
13-13 tie in game five with her second ace serve of the
night. And on the Skippers' next possession, Dolly
Fisher dumped a Jill McEwen set to the floor, giving
the Skippers their fifth championship of this decade.
The Titans, though, were celebrating every bit as much
as the Skippers when it was over.
With good reason. Although they were the defending
champions, having spoiled the Skippers' unbeaten season
last year with a three-game title-match sweep, Toll
Gate was the decided underdog last night.
Unbeaten again in regular-season play, North had swept
the Titans twice, and had only sets only to Warwick and
Pilgrim. And nobody had taken the Skippers to five game
in three years.
It didn't look like the Titans were going to do it
either. Toll Gate went out on a 7-0 run in the first
game, but the Skippers came back to win by outscoring
Toll Gate, 15-1 from that point.
The Skippers rolled in game two, 15-6 behind some big
hits from Brandee Trainor (11 kills), and seemed to
have thoughts of making it an early night.
Trainor and McEwen rushed North out to a 7-3 lead in
game three. With Caroline Boggs blocking and Holly
Hummel and Caitlin Machon doing the blasting, the
Titans outscored North 12-2 and got back in the match.
"We watched them play East Providence, and we knew
they could come back," said Dynon, who had 14 kills.
"We didn't want them to get to the third game and win
it. We were overconfident; we let down after we won the
first two games."
The Titans took another slap at the Skippers'
confidence when they sent North reeling in game four,
taking a 9-2 lead with help of a bunch of North
Kingstown errors, and won it with a run of four points
on a Hummel kill, a Lindsey Ryan block, and an ace by
Tracy Walsh.
"We just had to stay tough," Dynon said. "We needed
to start swinging, and talking to each other. We needed
to pick our heads up. When we messed up we were putting
our heads down."
Game five was a battle to the exciting finish of the
21/2-hour match. North was up 8-3, only to have Toll
Gate make it 8-8 and 12-12 and 13-13 before Dynon and
Fischer got the North fans breathing easy again.
"Everybody had fun out there; we didn't let ourselves
get down," Toll Gate's Boggs said. "We just made the
best out of it. We played with our hearts. We are not
disappointed. We came out and gave them a fight.
The Skippers knew they had been in a fight.
"But it's a momentum game, and we just hung in
there," McEwen said. "We just dug as deep as we
possibly could. We just stuck to our guns. We were
tight, but we worked through it and got the job done."
