  Born: August 21, 1981
 Where: Providence, Rhode Island
School: Calhoun College (Majoring in Physics)
        Clemson University
        Clemson, SC
        Class of 2003
School: South Kingstown High School
        South Kingstown, RI
        Class of 1999

College
Spring, 2000 - Sarah loves Clemson. She is awarded the Clemson PRINCE (renewable) Scholarship and a STATE OF RI grant. She gets off to a good start, making the "President's List" both semesters of her freshman year. She is named Clemson's "Outstanding Student in General Chemistry" which is a $50 award in cash but much, much more in honor. She is invited to join Alpha Lambda Delta ($25 membership fee) and the The National Society of Collegiate Scholars ($45 membership fee). She also enjoys her part-time job, working in the Physics Lab, when the time allows. She is a "Student Assistant III", a.k.a., a "student research assistant".

Summer, 2000 - Jobs before sophomore year: 07/07/00 - 07/07/00 Carter's 19th Hole at NK Municipal Golf Course. 07/xx/00 - 08/17/00 SK Recreation Dept, Basketball Ref.

09/01/00 - At the start of Sarah's sophomore year, she is awarded the VOGEL (renewable) Scholarhip. She is also one of a handful of students to be chosen to be an Ambassador for the Physics Department, considered to be a prestigious position. Her main responsibility will be to give tours of the department.

01/22/01 - Sarah is one of four students selected by Clemson to be nominated for the "Barry Goldwater Award".
Clemson will eventually come up with two (01/01-Sarah is one (pdf)) of Clemson's finalists for the national award competition.
04/07/01 - Sarah is awarded the "L.D. Huff Award" as Outstanding Sophomore in Physics. (The girls of Clemson Financial Aid.)

05/05/01 - Sarah makes the "President's List" for the year.

05/13/01 - Sarah returns to Clemson for two summer jobs - one with Dr. Hickey and the other with Dr. David Carroll who runs the nano-technology lab at Clemson.
06/16/01 - Sarah is one of these students (pdf) who attend CEDAR-SCOSTEP Conference in Boulder, CO from Jun 16 to Jun 22.

12/18/01 - Sarah joins the Golden Key Honor Society ($60) in her junior year. She is also selected by Clemson to receive the Robert D. Guyton (not renewable) Scholarship thanks in part to her academic achievements. There may have been only eight students chosen to receive this scholarship.
02/15/02 - Sarah is awarded (along with friends Judson and Colin) the junior "L.D. Huff Award for Excellence In Physics and Astronomy". It will be presented on 4/13/2002 - see picture below.

05/17/02 - Sarah returns to Rhode Island after another fine year ("President's List") to take summer courses at URI and to work as an umpire doing baseball and softball games.

08/05/02 - Sarah returns to Clemson after a quick week in Tampa and the local casino. She will live off-campus and have her own bathroom.
05/03/03 - Sarah is thrilled to finish her one and only final for the spring - Philosophy. However, she is sad to be saying good-bye to her students at Easley High School. 05/08/03 - Sarah is one of about 68 students to be honored for achieving "Departmental Honors" in a nice ceremony at Brooks Theater. Nice refreshments in the lobby followed.
05/09/03 - Sarah graduates. Magna Cum Laude. One of 1753 undergrauates, one of 5 physics majors.
05/09/03 - Some graduation pictures ... II, III, IV, V.

05/12/03 - Sarah is is offered and accepts a teaching job from a wonderful high school in South Carolina's Low Country.
05/14/03 - Sarah signs paperwork to buy her first home, a condo with a "porch". Great job, Sarah.

High School
Sarah is a serious student with a great sense of humor. She graduated from South Kingstown High School on June 18, 1999. She did well. She likes science, especially physics and biology. Her short term goals reflect her love of science and the theatre. She held numerous jobs while in school.

She loves sports. She played soccer in the fall (goalie for the state champs in 1997 and 1998), basketball in the winter, and volleyball in the spring. She did play softball in the spring of her freshman year.

1st Annual John Sisson Memorial Scholarship 5K Road Race (pdf)

Sarah took the summer of 1999 off - she only had a few weeks before college starts. Sarah spent the summers from 96-98 working backstage at the nationally known summer theatre in South Kingstown, Theatre-By-The-Sea. She loved it. She made her acting debut on August 16, 1996 in the role of "nervous tech apprentice pushed on-stage to be part of the crowd scene" in Evita.

She thanks everyone, especially the cooks at Theatre-By-The-Sea, for their support.

She will attend Calhoun College, which is the Honors Program at Clemson University, in the fall - CU-Soon, GoPaws!

Sarah at SKHS

Sarah ranks 17th (Top 7%) in her class of 224 as of 2/99. She has a 4.xx point average.

Her latest S.A.T. I score is between 1340 and 1440.

Her classmates, voting for senior superlatives, voted her SKHS's MOST ATHLETIC Girl.

She was selected as Senior Prom Queen on Jun 16, 1999. The King was Johnny T.

Sarah's Goals

Sarah's goal is to teach Physics and to be involved in school and community theatre. She plans to major in Physics and minor in tech theatre and education at Clemson University. She can be reached at sstanho@clemson.edu.

She will "enjoy" only 15 days of winter whereas, if she went to Orono, Maine, for example, she would enjoy 155 days of winter.

Sarah is very impressed by the Physics Professors and the Theatre Professors that teach at Clemson.

She may try-out for the Club Volleyball team, not the varsity team.

Sarah has played soccer for the South Kingstown Rebels since her sophomore year. Sarah was goalkeeper for the South Kingstown Soccer Team that won two Rhode Island Division I State Championships - on November 11, 1997 of her junior year and November 14, 1998 of her senior year. South led the league in shutouts and Sarah ended her senior year with six straight shutouts (over 41 saves) including the shutout wins in the semis and finals of the states. Great job! She got shut-out as far as any All-State Awards but the coach, in a generous offer, designated her Team MVP for 1998.

Sarah has played basketball since her freshman year. The Rebels were in Division II her first year when they made the state playoffs, winning one game before being eliminated. In her sophomore year, the Rebels were moved up to Division I and since then, the Rebels have never been able to reach .500

Sarah has won some honors while playing basketball. From the Rhode Island Girls' Basketball Coaches Association - "3rd Team Southern Division - '96-'97", "2nd Team Southern Division - '97-'98", and "1st Team Southern Division - '98-'99. She was also selected "Team MVP" for '97-'98 and should have a good chance of repeating in '98-'99. Sarah, with 1,000+ points, did repeat.

Sarah, on the left, gave a presentation at a URI practice. Or was it the woman from ESPN who gave the presentation?

Yes, it was Mimi Griffin, the blond lady in the middle, an ESPN Basketball Analyst that gave the presentation. Sorry - wishful thinking!

Sarah, after playing softball her freshman year and sitting out the spring of her sophomore year decided to try volleyball in her junior year. She enjoyed it very much. In her senior year, she was selected as one of two captains for the 1999 team, which made the playoffs for the first time in two years. (Sarah on floor.)

Sarah played softball her freshman year. At that time the school was in the slow-pitch league. (The school switched to fast-pitch in Sarah's junior year but by then the harm had already been done as slow-pitch had turned her off to future softball.)

In fast-pitch, Sarah can play all positions, but prefers to catch.
