How computed? - According to Newsweek, Add 30 stocks. But don't divide by 30 to get Dow average.
To account for splits, changes in companies, divide by .22522230. Thus a $1 change in the share price of any one stock will move the Dow 4.44 points. A move of $.75 for all 30, gives you a 100 points. To reverse, when the Dow hits, 10,000, the average cost per share
for the 30 stocks will be roughly $75. But then, on Mar 17, 1999, AT&T announces its 3-for-2 split which will change the factor again.
- Monday, 11/01/99 ... Four companies, S, CHV, GT, and UK, are replaced. New are MSFT, INTC, SBC, and HD.
