South Kingstown boys win Southern Division
By: Ken Castro, May 17, 2000
SOUTH KINGSTOWN - Teams in the Southern Division already know how
competitive their league is when it comes to track and field. Last
Thursday they collectively put some of their best performances of
the season out on the table for all to see. When the dust settled it
was a team victory for South Kingstown and enough individual
highlights to go around two-fold.
The clubs with the most depth didn't disappoint as the Rebels and
Chariho nabbed the top two spots in the team scoring. Westerly, West
Warwick and North Kingstown were all within range of each other for
the next three slots.
South got a lion's share of points from versatile Will Thomas who
upped his dual meet consistency to another level in taking the high
jump and the triple jump. Jon Barth had the largest margin of
victory in the hammer throw outdistancing Chariho's Ryan Chudy
(203-7 to 157-7).
The shot put featured a quartet of heavy hitters in Ryan Wheeler
(Narragansett), Ian Brewer (NK), Josh White (SK) and Chariho's Adam
Pepler. Wheeler topped Brewer who was also the victor in the discus
while White and Pepler added to an already crowded field at the top
going 3-4. Brewer reversed the roles on Wheeler in the discus,
beating the Mariner senior by one inch.
Chariho's Mike Maggs nailed the sprint double, clocking 11.1 in the
100 meters and flashing a near sub 23 second 200 meters.
Jon Andruchow of West Warwick also secured a pair of wins on the
day. Andruchow, who has the top regular season performance in the
800 meters took that event and added the 400 to his resume as well
stopping the clock in 50.2.
Besides Wheeler in the throwing events, the Mariners also got points
from the running portion of the meet from Adam Bloom who scored in
the 800 (3rd) and 1,500 (2nd- 4:16.7).
Chudy and Brendan Smith went 1-2 in the javelin for the Chargers who
also got Chris Ripstein in the mix at 5th place.
Thomas nailed the high jump with a leap of 6-2 while teammate Mike
Wilson was fourth followed by Steve Scowcroft of Narragansett who is
in his first year of high jump competition.

Courtesy of The Narragansett Times Rebs Fourth in Frosh/Soph boys track meet By: KEN CASTROMay 19, 2000 WOOD RIVER JUNCTION - Chariho used wins in six events to catapult them to the title in the Boys' Southern Division Freshman/Sophomore Cham-pionship Tuesday on their home oval. The Chargers easily outdis-tanced second place West Warwick by a 156 to 89 1/2 tally. North Kingstown fin-ished third followed by the Rebels of South Kingstown. "It was just a good day all around for us," said Charger coach Bill Habarek sub-sequent to the win. Habarek's troops, true to the team's goals for the day got off in the right direction by stak-ing claims to the top two spots in the 110 hurdles on the efforts of Chris Matteson and Derek Laflam. Matteson clocked a 17.0, while Laflam hit the line in 17.3. The Charger duo garnered 18 points for their club in the 1-2 finish. The field events were also a boon to the Chargers point total with wins coming from Anthony Morris in the long jump, Matt Behan in the shot put and LaFlamme in the javelin. Chariho teammates Mike Smith and Pat Sharkey split the victory in the pole vault by both scal-ing a height of 8-0. South Kingstown was the recipient of an impres-sive double by John Stokes. Stokes took the 1,500 meter race from Westerly's Brian Bowes with a well timed surge to the line that gave him a hairline victory. Stokes came off the fi-nal turn within 2 yards of Bowes and the pair matched strides over the final 90 meters. Stokes was timed in 4:42.4 while Bowes finished in 4:42.6. In the 800 it was Stokes and Chariho's Shawn Horgan repeating the scene to the line once again. Stokes utilized another lean in obtaining his second triumph of the day. The watch verified the fact that Stokes had a smaller margin to work with as both runners were given the same time of 2:19 for the two-lap battle. The Chargers also registered a first place in the 4x400 relay winning in 4:06. South Kingstown finished three seconds in arrears with the Skippers third in 4:13. West Warwick blasted a sub-50 4x100 relay win in overtaking North Kingstown and Chariho. Eric Loneigan of North Kingstown took the 3,000-meter race in a big way over teammate Dan Sieczkiewicz, win-ning with a 13-second gap. Narragansett's Chris Gamache placed 5th in the event for the Mariners lone points on the afternoon. East Greenwich's Kevin Dube was a double titelist in the short sprints going 11.5 in the 100 meters and coming back later in the program with a 23.9 in the 200. The Providence Journal 6.4.2000 Townies establish 2 state records By BOB LEDDY Journal Sports Writer Two state records fell at yesterday's Boys State Track Championships at Brown Stadium, and East Providence claimed both. Senior Colin Aina set the mark for the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 38.51. That betters the 39.25 set last year on this track by North Kingstown's Jesse Andoscia, and also eliminates two hand-held performances (38.9) that were carried on the books. Andoscia finished second yesterday in 39.26. The Townie 4x100-meter relay of Aina, Chris Rebollo, Kevin Carvalho and Herb Butler broke the state's electronically-timed record for that event. The quartet logged a time of 42.92, eclipsing the 42.94 set by a Townie relay at the New England Championships of 1997. Aina also won the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.26, a meet record. Hendricken distance runners Jon Kieliszak and Ryan McConnell train together, but have not gone head-to-head this season -- until yesterday. Appropriately, their 1,500-meter run yesterday was a classic. Kieliszak outran his friend and teammate in a personal-best time of 3 minutes, 59.17 seconds. Kieliszak clocked 4:00.9, hand-held, at last weekend's Hendricken Invitational. "Today was a fast field, and we pushed each other," said Kieliszak. McConnell finished second yesterday in 4:04.36. Kieliszak, who won last year's State Meet with a time of 4:05.03, turned a 63-second first quarter yesterday, and hit the 800 split in 2:08. "I wanted to go out in 61 and 2:07," Kieliszak said. "I think being a little behind pushed me more." Kieliszak and McConnell were in the same 800-meter field, as well. That race was won by West Warwick senior Jon Andruchow -- the state leader all season -- in a time of 1:55.88. Kieliszak finished second in 1:56.75 and McConnell third in 2:00.17. Pilgrim's Trent Jordan took two gold medals. He outdid himself in the long jump by clearing 23 feet, 13/4 inches (7.05 meters), bettering by nearly a foot his winning performance at this meet last year. In the 200 meters, Jordan legged out a 22.31 winning time. Also mining double gold was Hendricken's Denny Omisore. He went 49.56 in winning the 400 meters, and won the triple jump in 48-53/4 (14.78). Dan Gazzola capped his in-state season with the gold medal in the shot put. Hendricken's Manhattan College-bound senior put the shot 55-53/4 (16.91). Gazzola also placed in the hammer, finishing fourth. That event was won by the Hawks' Josh McCaughey, the national leader in the 12-pound hammer. Yesterday, McCaughey threw 236-4 (72.03), his best toss this spring by nearly five feet. North Kingstown junior Ian Brewer went 161-5 (49.20) to win the discus throw. South Kingstown's Will Thomas cleared 6-4 (1.93) in the high jump. In the javelin and pole vault, Hendricken -- which won the team title -- captured firsts. Joe Turilli cleared 13-6 (4.11) in taking the pole vault, while Anthony Albanese tossed the javelin 185-8 (56.29). Hope freshman Sequey Roberts won the 100-meter dash in 11.27, nipping Pilgrim's Jordan. In a beauty of a race at his final appearance on the Brown track, Tolman senior Jim Cyr cruised to a winning time of 8:52.31 -- a personal-best -- in the 3,000 meters. Jun 10, 2000 (Match #M15): NewEng - Away How did South Kingstown do? It's hard to find any reports on the meet. Mary Serdakowski, from Chariho, won the 100M Hurdles. SK's Jon Barth was evidently competing in a meet in Sacremento, CA. He came in 2nd in the hammer with a toss of 212-6. Unless some more news dribbles in, that may be it for the season.
