From the Narragansett Times - Apr 04, 2001
SOUTH KINGSTOWN - South Kingstown overcame a stirring individual
performance by Exeter/West Greenwich's Pat Harner and cruised to
a double win in the opening outdoor track competition of the season
Monday afternoon on their home oval.

The Rebels topped Southern Division rival Chariho 93-61, and ripped
the Scarlet Knights by a 114-39 tally despite the four victories by
Harner on the day.
Harner, the Knights' elusive running back during the football season
won the long jump, triple jump, pole vault and the 100 meters in the
chilly climate that marked the competition.
Andrew Cashen posted multiple victories as well boosted for South
Kingstown as he captured both hurdle events and was part of the winning
4x400 relay team that was timed in 3:45.0.
The Rebels strength in the sprints and middle distances was evident as
they took the majority of their wins at those distances.
Eric Deutsch ran a 24.0 in the 200 meter race and Colin Murphy
followed with a solid early season time of 54.4 in the 400 meters. Chris
Wright nabbed the 800 as well in 2:08.7.
Chariho, a major contender in the Southern Division, had its say in
the throwing events in the competition, except in the discus where for
South's Zak Thomas was victorious with an effort of 125-8.
Charger freshman Ben Asermelly won the shot (45-2) and teammate Nate
Potter the hammer with a toss of 154-5. Chris Ripstein closed out the
throwing disciplines with a win in the javelin (154-1) for the Chargers.

From the Narragansett Times - May 02, 2001

WOOD RIVER JUNCTION - The South Kingstown girls' track team claimed its
customary spot on the podium Saturday, at the Rick Schomp Invitational,
by overwhelming a field over more than 20 other schools with designs on
obtaining the title.

As they had done in the first two editions of the meet, the Rebels
outdistanced their closest pursuers by a wide margin in tallying 102
team points. Cumberland claimed the second slot with 68 points while
Toll Gate finished third with 56 1/2.
The Narragansett girls' on the efforts of their 4x400 team nabbed two
points in the competition, which placed them ahead of Warwick Vets in
the overall standings. Rogers and Bishop Hendricken topped the boys'
competition while South Kingstown (4th) and North Kingstown (5th) were
just off the pace of third place East Providence.
While there were a number of sharp early season performances
throughout the competition, it was the sprinting events that established
the tone of the meet.
In the girls' 200, South's Libby Franco topped an experienced field by
gaining the lead off the turn and powering through to the tape in a meet
record 27.1. Chariho's Liz Lyons (27.6) was second and North Kingstown's
Molly Bergren was in the hunt at 27.7.
Franco's victory lent credence to the Rebels depth throughout their
roster. "I knew Molly was really good at the 200, and we tied at the
last meet," said Franco, who also took on the triple jump and a leg on
the 4x400 relay. "I usually don't get the opportunity to run the 200
because of Jen Dougan, but it finally feels great to win something, and
to get all this attention it's just wonderful."
Dougan chose the 400 meters as her running event on the day in place
of the half-turn race that her teammate won. Competitors were able to
complete in one individual running event on the day in addition to a
relay and a single field discipline.
Dougan and LaSalle's Alison Fogarty were the only competitors in the
400 meter race to eclipse the 60 second mark as the Ram freshman arrived
at the line one second ahead of Dougan, who was timed in 59.9.
"I knew Jen and I had similar times and I knew she was right behind me
so that pushed me a lot. It's a big break for me because I've been
trying to break 59 this season. If I can go into states with anything
under 58.9 I'll be happy with that."
The Rebels also tallied maximum points in a pair of field events as
Erin Robertson and Tina Fotopoulos captured the long jump and shot put
respectively. Robertson edged another LaSalle athlete in Marieanne
Rivard by leaping 15-01.
Rivard just missed the 15 foot barrier with a jump of 14-11 1/2.
Robertson also placed third in the 300m hurdles with a time of 50.4.
East Greenwich senior Lauren Ciccone was the victor in 48.5. Anne
Burrows of Rogers was well off the 36-0 distance of South's Fotopoulous
in the shot, throwing 33-3 1/2 for second place.

Boys Meet

Coach Jim Champion's South boys' enjoyed a pair of wins on the day as
well. Chris Wright and Narragansett's Adam Bloom battled at the front of
the pack in a quick 800-meter race that became a two-man show at around
the 500-meter mark. Wright and Bloom quietly slid away from Hendricken's
Daniel Carvalho at that point, leaving the two locals' to motor to the
finish. Wright was timed in 2:00.1 in gaining the win. Bloom was in at
2:00.5. "The time was pretty good. I'm really shooting to go under two
minutes but I just don't know where I'm going to be at by the end of the
season," Wright said. "I didn't want to leave it all on the track today
and not be able to do as well later on." Bloom who ran 2:01.9 in the
2000 edition of the meet added, "I knew it was going to come down
between me and Chris from the beginning and I wanted to go out with him.
I moved to the front and we were able to pick it up a bit. I think that
that helped both of us." Like Wright, Bloom also foresees a visit to the
sub-2 minute barrier, " I thought I could get it today but hopefully
sometime soon."

Invitational Notes:
North Kingstown's Lindsay Vieira continued her dominance in the 3,000
meters with a 35-second margin of victory and in the process set a new
meet record at 10:14.1. Vieira took home the first MVP award that was
named in honor of Kerri Bessette.
Ian Brewer of North took the boys' field event award with a solid
performance in the discus.

The Narragansett girls' 4x400 relay team took a big step forward on
Saturday, one that may pay dividends down the road according to coach
Tara Jones. "They are so happy to break through at a meet like this.
It's nice to see them enjoy some success because they have worked so
hard." The Mariner quartet of Melissa Chinigo, Erin Mcguire, Kate McPeak
and Anna Toyama placed fifth with a time of 4:49.8 in winning the first
of two heats.

Rogers coach Chris Richards came to the Schomp Invitational with
specific goals in mind, "Realistically I see ourselves competing for
second at the state championships. A team as talented and as well
coached as Hendricken is pretty well out of reach for a small school
like us," said Richards who successfully defended his Schomp title from
a year ago. "We're going to try and get some individual championships
and get some kids in the top six so we can get to New Englands and
represent Rhode Island and that's our goal. We'll try and get some of
the young kids to have fun and maybe someday they can take their places
up there with the seniors."

"With the few kids that we brought today, we were looking to get
qualifiers for the state meet," said Rebel boys' coach Jim Champion
following the competition. It was a successful day in that regard for
South. "We had five qualifiers today so were on our way. The next
qualifying meet will be on Sunday at Warwick and we're hoping to get
more kids qualified." Eric Deutsch (200m and long jump). Zak Thomas
(discus), Andrew Cashen (300 IM), and Chris Wright (800m) emerged as
qualifiers this time around. Thomas broke the school record in the
discus with his toss of 146-11.
Champion sees few limits in the progress of Thomas who is under the
tutelage of South coach Pat Egan "We're really lucky to have a guy like
Pat. If a kid is willing to put in the time and listen to coach Egan
they will improve. It's still early," Champions said. "We have another
whole month left and then we'll peak for June."

  Three wins for SK
Nice day. Up on the high ground, where the javelin, shot, etc. are
contested, it wasn't that nice. The small black flies were out in
the weight area - but thankfully not down on the track.
Many SK runners experimented and ran in events that they don't
normally run in.

From the Narragansett Times - May 04, 2001
SOUTH KINGSTOWN - South Kingstown with a strong showing in the field
events took a decisive victory over three Southern Division opponents in
boys track Tuesday afternoon on their home oval.
Zak Thomas and Roman Dodd went 1-2 in the shot, discus and hammer for
the Rebels who registered a 128-24 win over Narragansett and a 111-33
victory over West Warwick.
Narragansett's Adam Bloom and South's Chris Wright took on each other
once again in the 800-meter race. [WRONG!]
On Saturday at the Schomp Invitational, Wright motored to a win but
this time out it was the Mariner senior coming from the second spot to
claim the victory in 2:11.0. Both Rebel relay teams emerged on top as
well in the competition. In the 4x400 relay, Andrew Cashen, Jon Stokes,
Colin Murphy and Wright clocked a 3:45.0 in topping the field.

WARWICK - Temperatures on the track surface at the Titan Invitational
hovered near the century mark throughout the competition on Saturday,
but it wasn't nearly as hot as South Kingstown's Gavin Logan who
generated a pair of scalding performances.
The Rebel speedster garnered the triple jump and the 200 meters at the
first annual meet that was a key qualifier for the state championships.
Logan kicked off the meet with a solid series on the triple jump runway.
His 42-10 3/4 topped Tom Luther of Bishop Hendricken by a healthy
margin. The mark was just the first of two track records on the Toll
Gate oval that Logan would lay out on the day.
In the 200-meter semis' he drove to the line with a 15-meter edge. In
the final he engulfed the field at the end of the turn and pulled away
from Brent Mancuso and DaCadia Vickers of North Kingstown in clocking a
23.7. For all of his efforts it was the triple jump that derived the
most satisfaction for Logan given the fact that the Invitational was
just his fifth serious attempt at the discipline.
"It's really good to get a performance like this," Logan said. "It's
kind of like a confidence builder because at the beginning of the year I
was unsure of what I was doing. I watched guys jump over 40 feet and I
thought that I was never going to get there. I feel like I'm picking it
up fast though." Logan said that the technical aspects of the event and
not the speed factor create the most concern in his pre race routine.
"My steps have been my biggest problem. Sometimes they are really good
and other times they have been way too short. I haven't had accuracy. I
think that it'll come around but right now it's a combination of not
enough practice in the event and inexperience," he added.
"Gavin basically picked up the triple in mid season," said Rebel coach
Jim Champion following the meet, which concluded with more of his
athletes reaching the qualifying standards. "He's a great student of the
event and he does anything you ask of him. He's only going to get that
much better."
Champion spoke about Logan's 200 victory as well, "I'm pleased with
his time given the fact that there is a significant headwind and the
track is very hot. That's a very respectable time."
South took second in the team competition behind Bishop Hendricken
despite bringing just a skeleton crew to compete. Besides Logan,
Champion had successful qualifiers in Mike Wright in the 1,500 and Eric
Deutsch, who increased his qualifying mark in the long jump with a 19-8
leap which was good for second place. South also had a trio in the top
eight in the hammer.
Zak Thomas garnered third place (183-11) behind Hendricken's Mike
Freeman (204-3).Roman Dodd (7th-168-4) and Andrew Parkinson (8th-130-5)
followed.
The most competitive race of the day was in the 800 meters, where
nationally ranked Emmanuel Karngar of Shea bested a pair of hot pursuers
in South's Chris Wright and Ryan McConnell of Hendricken. The three
extracted themselves from the rest of the pack early in the going with
the Raider junior holding a three-yard advantage on Wright and McConnell
at the 400 meter point. In the final 100 meters it was Karngar inching
away to the line with a two-second victory. Wright closed strongly
placing third and dipped below the two-minute mark for the first time
this season.
"The difference today was running with Emmanuel and Ryan," said Wright
who was timed in 1:58.9. "I didn't really go out with splits today, It
was easier to stay with them and work at the front today."
Karngar went through the first 400 split in 58.2. Karngar was selected
as the distance MVP and Logan was chosen as the sprint most valuable by
the coaches at the conclusion of the meet.
"This was a good turnout for a first year meet," said Toll Gate
assistant coach Ken Skelly. "We have 20 teams here today and hopefully
we'll add more in upcoming editions. We'd like to make this the top
qualifier for the state championships."

May 19, 2001 (Match #M13): Class B - Away

South Kingstown wins Class B at Toll Gate
Nice day, first sunny day in about a week.
What a strange track at Toll Gate. When it was built
they must have used a level with alcohol in the bubble.
It looks more like a roller-coaster.
Gavin Logan had two wins in the triple jump and 100M.
He also just missed the 200M by .2 seconds to Biosse of
Hope High. Gavin fell to the track at the finish because
of a problem with his left leg that he eventually iced.
The Wright Brothers did well. Mike Had a close second
(.3 seconds back) in the 1500M and Chris came on strong
to win the 800M by .7 seconds.
  Deutech won the long jump.
  David Stanhope had a 4:36.5 for the 1500M - 10th place.

there will be a new $250,000 track.

Hendricken oval's swan song is sweet for Hawks
By BOB LEDDY
Journal Sports Writer
The track at Bishop Hendricken High -- home to countless Hendricken
Invitational meets over the years -- had its swan song at yesterday's
annual event, the season's final major meet before the State
Championships next week.
Hawks head coach Paul Alianiello announced that the oval will be torn
up and replaced with a new track, ready for next spring. Yesterday,
however, the six-lane asphalt track hosted some fine performances.
Ryan McConnell ran the 3,000 meters, and the Hawk senior was
unchallenged in clocking 8:56.6, off his season-best of 8:41.3. His
performance helped Hendricken capture the team title. Shea junior
Emmanuel Karngar, opting yesterday to run only the 400 meters, clocked
49.9 second to win the gold.
"I didn't have a good start," said Karngar, whose best 400 time this
season was a 48.0 anchor split on the Raiders' 4x400 relay at the recent
Titan Invitational. "At the last 45 meters, I dug in."

Jun 09, 2001 (Match #M16): NewEng - Away

  How did South Kingstown do?
  See Narragansett Times article.

HAMPTON, NH - Athletes from the host state and their neighbors to the
south had a banner day at the 56th annual New England Track and Field
Championships on Saturday at Winnacunnet High School.
The combined meet saw two meet records fall and another tied in what
amounted to the final high school competition for many of the athletes.
The first New England Track and Field meet was held back in 1912, at
what is now the University of New Hampshire in Durham with a handful of
schools participating. The 2001 edition, held under bright skies and
balmy temperatures returned to the Granite State and bore little
resembled to its predecessor. The team scoring, once a major draw of the
meet has been discarded in favor of individual results.
In the girls 1,600, Meredith Crocker garnered an 11th place overall
with a time of 5:10.88. Crocker finished third in the second of three
heats on the day, just behind Westerly's Emily Anderson who was clocked
in 5:08.43. Meghan Owen of Killingly (CT) took home the title with a
4:56.47.
A pair of steady seasonal performers from South Kingstown looked sharp
on Saturday in the boys meet. Gavin Logan did triple duty for the
Rebels, taking on the 100 meters, triple jump as well as contributing in
the 4x400 relay.
Logan was timed in 11.83 in the prelims of the 100m, which placed him
21st overall. To complicate matters, Logan was denied a pair of jumps in
the triple jump as a result of an officiating miscue and had to base his
results on just one hurried at-tempt. His mark of 41-04 was good enough
for 16th position on the day.
In the 400 relay, Logan closed quickly for the Rebels who were timed
in 3:34.76. Bloomfield of Connecticut had the day's best time, a blis-
tering 3:22.67. "The one-hundred was interesting," smiled Logan
following his exhaustive day. "I had no idea what to expect, but it was
fun I really enjoyed it today. Now I know that all the hard work I put
in this spring paid off. This year was a big learning for me. The
learning curve was tremendous. I'm looking forward to next year because
now I know what I can build off. I also know what I am capable of in the
future and I have more of a sense on how to get there now."
In the 800 meters, Adam Bloom of Narragansett and Chris Wright of
South Kingstown, competitors all season long in Southern Division
battles were placed in the same heat on Satur-day as well. Wright was
second in the third heat in 1:59.92 and Bloom finished fourth at
2:02.73. Both runners went out hard from the gun and remained in the
hunt for the win until the final 75 meters.
"It was comfortable knowing that Chris was in the same race," said
Bloom. His South Kingstown counterpart agreed, "It made the whole race
that much easier to deal with." Wright added that the latter part of the
race was much more intense than the first circuit, "The pace felt pretty
good on the first lap but on the second lap it just didn't feel together."
Despite the hard pace, Wright was able to eclipse the twominute mark
once again in his final meet. "It's more of an experience than anything
else to come to this meet," Wright said. Bloom who had ridden the edge
of the sub two-minute barrier through-out the season came close on
Saturday once again. "This meet was supposed to be big for me because I
hadn't bro-ken two all year and I was hoping to get it here. I wish I
had an-other chance at it but maybe next year in col-lege I'll do it,"
added the Mariner senior.
