Dec 03, 1996 (Game #NL1): Non-League/Injury Fund Game - SK hosts Scituate
($3 admission, no programs.)

South Kingstown beats Scituate (Division II - North) 52-37
South Kingstown showcased their '96-'97 Basketball Team for the
first time in the annual Injury Fund Game. The starting five consisted
of Katie Parkinson, Monica Carty, Shellie Parkinson, Sarah Stanhope,
and Meghan Moore. Katie and Meghan replaced last years graduating
seniors, Julie Barth and Alisha Gardiner.
Meghan is at point with Shellie at center. Sarah has
dropped down from her #3 spot of last year to play #2 while Katie and
Monica play #3 and #4 and SCFun is not sure which is which.
The team jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead over the weaker Division II
team and rolled on from there. Shellie and Katie led the scoring.
Sarah look good with her defense and steals (if she could only
convert more steals). Meghan played well and Monica was a bull
under the basket.
The bad passing that haunted the team last year seemed much better
in the first half but turned a little sour in the second.
Coming off the bench were Kaley Doran, Lindsay Fish, Marisa
Justice, Bethany Moore, and Tasha Evans. Jen Duggan was feeling
under the weather.

Dec 05, 1996 (Game #01): vs North Kingstown at North Kingstown
($2 admission, no programs.)

South struggles to stay afloat; NK easily wins 60-45
South did not look good tonight. North looked great.
The game started out extremely slow. North was up 4-3 with 10:52 to
go in the first half. Then North got rolling and rolling. North was
hitting from the outside, passing well, finding the open man under the
basket. Their defense was great also.
South just couldn't find the right combination. A non-turnover trip
down the floor was becoming very rare. It wasn't until late in the
game, with 7:45 left and North up 50-25, that South started to look
somewhat respectable. Marisa Justice had just come off the bench.
The new rotation seemed to play well. South found the net, got some
defensive rebounds and their full court press was effective. A few
minutes later, it was North 52-39. But it was too late.
Jill McEwen led North with 18 points while #21 looked good from the
outside. Nicole Campbell and Diane Dynon both had ten points while
Sarah Tift added nine. South's Shellie Parkinson led all scorers with
24.
South's passing is their worst nightmare. Perhaps the bounce-pass is
overused. One problem is that many players don't have the strength to
pass from the chest so they end up doing that "sidewinder" delivery
which involves a "going-back" before a "coming forward". The
"going-back" telegraphs the pass to the free world. The players also
have to get used to Shellie's no-look passes.
South's Katie Parkinson missed the game. She either had the
flu or was camping out overnight atop Mt. Washington with some
friends.

Dec 10, 1996 (Game #02): SK hosts Rogers
($0 admission, no programs.)

Rogers, behind Neves and Figueras, beat South 53-41
Apparently, the Rogers' coach has xeroxed a few pages out of Red
Auerbach's "How to Coach Basketball" book. Remember how Red would yell
at the refs to purposely get himself thrown out of games. He thought
this would juice-up his players and it usually worked. Well Rogers
does something somewhat similar but with a different twist. The result
is that the opposition, in this case South, starts feeling sorry for
the other team and they let their guard down. Very clever but
something just isn't right - perhaps the xerox repair person should
be called to check the xerox machine.
It was good to see Akeia Neves again. All but South's seniors should
remember Neves from her junior high days. Her talent continues to
grow. Maria Figueras is also impressive; very mature player.
South continues to look for the right karma. Shellie Parkinson led
South with 18 points. She was in foul trouble much of the game.
Bethany Moore played well off the bench. But there was no way
to gain any ground on Rogers with Neves and Figueras in control.
Turnovers continue to kill South.

Dec 11, 1996 (Game #NL2): SK hosts Classical
($3 admission, no programs.)

SK hangs on for 55-51 win over Classical
A win is a win. It turned into a very close game at the end. South
was up by five most of the game. They even went up by 10 points with
5:24 to go. But then it got tense with Classical within four at 47-43.
Temporary relief came with two quick baskets by Sarah Stanhope but
Classical was back again, this time within three, 51-48. Two clutch
free throws by Shellie Parkinson helped ice the victory in those
frantic last couple minutes.
The whole team played very agressively. They were on the floor half
the time wrestling for balls - they should wear elbow padding. Jen
Duggan was super as she filled in for an ailing Monica Carty.
Katie Parkinson, Tasha Evans, and on and on played their hearts out.
Marissa Justice had a couple big baskets in the first half. Passes
into the key from Sarah to Shellie worked well. There was even a
couple give-and-goes that worked.
Classical still needs to learn how to shoot fouls - the shooters too
often stepped over the line too early. #15 for Classical played well at
the point.
Too bad the win doesn't count in the division standings. South needs
em.

Dec 17, 1996 (Game #03): South hosts Westerly
($3 admission, no programs.)

South continues to throw away any chance of a possible victory with
bad passing
The Rebels could not take advantage of a Westerly squad that had
Melissa O'Meara out with a bad ankle, Michelle Ahern out sick, and
Christie Ward looking for answers to a troubling hip that has been
bothering her since the end of soccer.
Once again, South's bad passing made the difference in the game.
South's in-bounding also left much to be desired.
Bethany "the lion" Iacoi roamed the perimeter of the herd feasting
on the weak. She must have had 75% of her 28 points on steals into
easy layups. Again and again.
After both teams hit the 15-point mark hand-in-hand, Westerly said
"Enough of this" and started to pull away. Their lead varied from 5 to
10 points through out most of the game. South got within six late in
the game but a layup by Lauren Manfred put the Bulldogs back on a
roll.
Krista Martin played well for Westerly in spite of being in foul
trouble throughout most of the game.
Shellie Parkinson led South with 23 points while Sarah Stanhope
added 15. Jen Duggan had a good game. Katie Parkinson gave a scare
when she took ball to the face late in the game.
Marissa Justice was unavailable for play.

Dec 19, 1996 (Game #04): vs Chariho at Chariho
($2 admission, no programs.)

Chariho's outside shooting propels them to an easy 58-44 victory
over SK
Both teams were looking for their first league victory and trying to
avoid the cellar. It appeared to be a fairly even match through the
first half. South managed to get up by four at one point before both
teams went to the locker room with the score tied 22 all. (Actually
the Chariho players stayed on the bench, why is that?)
The second half was a completely different ball game. Freshmen Becca
Newman and Jessica Wood, with all the time in the world to shoot,
threw in four quick 3-pointers and Chariho was off and running. They
were able to get their lead up to 19 points at 46-27 before South
Kingstown rallied somewhat, getting back within nine.
Sarah Stanhope led South with 17 points. Katie Parkinson and
Shellie Parkinson followed with 10 and 8 points. Chariho's big gun,
Ariana Dolock netted 16 points.
Chariho's offense looked very smooth and in control when compared to
South's. They would continually open up the middle and work the ball
from side to side looking for the open girl cutting for the basket.
South's defense often left Chariho players open.
Kaley Doran started for South as the team tries to find a combo
that can click. Summur Shaikh joined the team for the first time as
a cross-over.
For South County Waves Fastpitch fans, it was old-home week. At one
time Chariho had four Waves on the court at the same time.

Dec 23, 1996 (Game #05): vs East Greenwich at East Greenwich
($3 admission, no programs.)

EG beats SK 60-44 in a game that got away from South early-on
East Greenwich's victory gave all Southern Division teams a clean
sweep over SK in the first round of in-division games before the
Southern and Central Divisions cross over and play each other. A
playoff appearance by South this year would be a miracle.
South once again got off to a slow start. Behind 28-15 at the half,
they played East Greenwich fairly close in the second half with East
Greenwich holding a 32-29 margin for the last 16 minutes. As good as
EG played or as bad as South played, there was always the feeling that
a basket here or there and South would be right back (down by less
than 10) in the game.
Turnovers again hurt. South often by-passes the open shot so they
can pass it around until they get "that" turnover.
Casie Rhodes played an awesome game for East Greenwich, despite the
ugly black socks. Very aggressive, she scored xx points to lead all
scorers.
Shellie Parkinson led SK with 21 points. Shellie was
shaken up late in the first half when she fell on the ball and was
dazed. Marisa Justice looked good with her outside shooting
getting South's first 3-point basket of the year.
  Summur Shaikh was ill.

Dec 26, 1996 (Game #NL3): South hosts Narragansett
($3 admission with old, out of date programs.)

  South wins exciting nail-biter, 58-55
What a great game as Narragansett and South Kingstown fought down to
the wire. The whole game was close, with neither team able to get more
than two baskets ahead. During the last few minutes, the teams took
turns sharing the lead.
The girls from Narragansett looked super. Tessa Kelly took the ball
to the hoop. Kate Letourneau and Jeni Thompson played agressive
basketball. Most impressive was Heather Lakatos. She did everything
well. Her three pointer late in the game was a big lift for
Narragansett.
With time running out and South up by one, South's Monica Carty
committed a foul that no one but the ref saw. Jeni Thompson went to
the line with a chance to put Narragansett ahead. Although she sank
the front end, she stepped over the line and the violation turned the
ball over to South.
Sarah Stanhope and Shellie Parkinson swapped assists and baskets at
the end to clinch the victory.
Shellie led South with 22 while Sarah had 14. Heather Lakatos was
the game's top scorer with 23.
The whole team played well. Katie Parkinson played well off the
boards. Jen Duggan looked good on defense and Marisa Justice had a
good game even if she had butterflies from starting her first varsity
game. Coach Kelli Fay-Wolfe, who is officially not only coaching the
team, but a little point guard that is five month's along
(congratulations!), once again had a different starting line-up as she
continues to search for the right chemistry.
Summur Shaikh was away on vacation.
Who scheduled this tournament? Players, who never get a break, lost
another chance at an extended vacation or a chance to visit grandma or
grandpa as the games were scheduled four crazy days apart. Then, to

Jan 10, 1997 (Game #07): vs Pilgrim at Pilgrim
($3 admission yet no programs.)

South's rally falls short as Pilgrim hangs on for a 50-44 win over
SK
Both teams got off to a slow start. Although South turned the ball
over on their first five trips down the court, they were able to get
out to an early lead before Pilgrim tied things up at 14-all, with
4:53 left in the first half. Pilgrim then went on to take control,
never losing the lead again.
South seemed to play a respectable game overall. It seemed a lot
better than it has been lately or is this wishful thinking.
Pilgrim's Meaghan McGonagle led all scorers with 25. South's
Shellie Parkinson had 17 while Sarah Stanhope had 16.
Sarah, who continues to score 90% of her points in the second half
(What happens in the first half?), was 8-for-8 from the foul line to
help cut Pilgrim's lead in the second half. The closest South could
get down the stretch run was 5 points however.
Becky Dangelo had her first varsity points in limited action.
Meghan Moore played well off the bench. South's front line of
Shellie, Katie Parkinson, and Monica Carty had their hands full
trying to out-rebound 6'-3" Meaghan McGonagle, who was also a big
factor in the "blocked shots" category.
South's Bethany Moore was not feeling well and did not see any
action.

Jan 14, 1997 (Game #08): South hosts Toll Gate
($3 admission with old, out of date programs.)

South gets their first league win behind Shellie Parkinson's 29
points, beating Toll Gate 61-57
Shellie Parkinson was smokin' last night. Twenty-nine big points.
She couldn't miss. Finally, a league win as the season approaches the
half-way point. Hopefully there will be a few more.
The whole team came out smokin' and jumped out to an early lead,
18-6, 22-10. The lead quickly disappeared, however, in the shuffle of
personnel. Toll Gate seized the opportunity and scored 13 unanswered
points to grab the lead, 23-22.
It was a brief stay in the lead for Toll Gate. South quickly got the
advantage back up to about 10 points and held that until late in the
second half, when Shellie went down with a foot injury. Everyone
held their breath until she was able to re-enter the game a few
minutes later.
A 58-51 lead with 1:41 left did not bring the warm fuzzies to the
South fans.
South stopped playing "their game" and tried to stall which was not
a good idea. Toll Gate started gobbling up steals and actually got
within three points. But along with the steals came the Toll Gate
fouls. Shellie sank some critical free throws in the last minute
to cement the victory.
Katie Parkinson was great off the boards and added 12 big
points. Tasha Evans showed some good hustle and some new moves.
Jen Duggan played well. She came in early as Sarah Stanhope
got two fouls in the first minute of play and sat out much of the
first half.
Bethany Moore was in street clothes with an appointment to
see the doctor tomorrow, when she will probably be put on crutches as
a possible torn cartilage is explored.

Jan 16, 1997 (Game #09): vs West Warwick at West Warwick
($3 admission yet no programs.)

Could of, should of, but didn't - South loses to West Warwick,
64-63
It was a tough game to lose. It was a very win-able game. As a
matter of fact, South would have won by five points if the 3-point
rule didn't exist.
The Wizards jumped out to an early lead but South was able to tie
things at 17-all with 8:14 to go in the first half. From then on, the
lead swung back and forth. With 12 seconds left in the game, South was
up 63-62. Somehow, the Wizards got the ball to their star player,
Jessica Ouellette, who drove the baseline from the left side with two
defenders on her to score the winning basket.
South's lack of defense, especially on the outside shooting, hurt.
Jessica Ouellette was wide open all night, banging in five 3-pointers
on her way to a total of 33 points. West Warwick had a total of eight
3-pointers. At one time, they had four in a row. Every time South
would get up by five, the Wizards would hit a three pointer and
quickly get back within one bucket.
South's inability to inbound the ball hurt. The "pass-in" to Becky
Dangelo backfired more times than it worked.
Perhaps South should learn to appreciate the turnovers on the plus
side. Savor the moment, say thanks, instead of being in such a rush to
turn the ball back over to the other team, which, unfortunately,
always seems to be the case.
It was one of the rougher games that the Rebels have participated in
all year. The consensus in the stands was that the referees were
awful.
Sarah Stanhope played a great all-around game, one of her better
games all year. She led the Rebels with 17 points. Shellie Parkinson
and Katie Parkinson had 16 and 12. Marisa Justice with two
3-pointers and Jen Duggan played well.
Monica Carty, Tasha Evans, and Meghan Moore, the whole team,
they all deserve a lot of credit for refusing to quit in these hard
times.

What a crappy gym. I'll bet most if not all of the boys' teams
refuse to play there. It can't be up to their standards. (It's a
joke - it's an all-girls school.)
Well South lost another one but the kids are starting to play
better. The turnover problem is getting better. They still have much
to work on but at least now, the other team has to beat them. They
can't depend on SK beating themselves. If only the season was starting
now. If only the games so-far were "spring training" games.
Shellie Parkinson scored 17 while Sarah Stanhope had 14.
Defense, or the lack of it was once again South's downfall. Bay View
shot the 3-pointer with no distractions. Teams can easily erase any
South lead by turning to the 3-pointer.
Jillian Tente, just made a cross-over, hurt her leg in the JV
game and was unavailable. Tasha Evans was absent.

  Coventry beats SK 72-52
Same old stuff. What's left after man-to-man and zone don't seem to
work? Coventry's Kelli Knight was wide open from 3-point range all
night long. A quick pass and without any hesitation she would put the
ball up. She had a big night with 24 points.
Coventry is a good passing team. Also a good rebounding team.
South got within seven, (47-40?), in the second half but Coventry
just wouldn't quit. They kept pouring in the points.
Jen Duggan continues to battle her way into more and more
playing time. Marisa Justice was hot from 3-point land. Shellie
Parkinson had 15 and Sarah Stanhope had 13.

Jan 27, 1997 (Game #12): South hosts Cranston East
($3 admission with most likely out of date programs if any.)

Shellie Parkinson leads SK past Cranston East, 62-54
South Kingstown came in with a victory over Cranston East on paper.
Cranston East was winless in eleven previous league games in the
Central Division. But for the longest time, the "victory" wasn't worth
the paper it was written on.
It was bombs away for both teams and to hell with the defense.
Cranston East scored a season high 54 points with four 3-pointers,
South's Achilles heel, while South's Shellie Parkinson scored
29 to tie her season high of a couple weeks ago.
South was up by six, 33-27 at the half. In the second half, South
got up by 10 points and then Cranston East began to rally. They got
within one point via a 13 to 4 run that had South ahead 41-40.
Shellie was then fouled while going for a basket. The basket
counted, Shellie was fouled, and Shellie converted the free throw
to give South some breathing room. With five minutes to go, South was
up by ten but the fans could still not relax.
Katie Parkinson scored 15 and had numerous rebounds. Sarah Stanhope
scored ten and had many assists.

Jan 30, 1997 (Game #13): South hosts North Kingstown
($3 admission with most likely out of date programs if any.)

South Kingstown looks good but comes up short as NK wins 58-53
South Kingstown looked good and their fans were hoping for an upset
in one of the more exciting games of the year.
Shellie Parkinson got South rolling at the gun putting up the first
three baskets for the Rebels. South continued to roll and was ahead
most of the first half. North's Sarah Tift, who seemed to be at the
free throw line all night (8 for 9 and game high 28) made a free throw
with 4:32 left for a 19-19 tie but another Shellie spurt gave South
the lead at the half, 27-21.
The dreaded 3-pointer once again hurt South in the second half.
South's zone defense shifts so much to one side always leaving
"that girl" open on the other side for the easy killer shot. Tonight's
"that girl" was Jill McEwen. NK had four 3-pointers in the second
half, six for the evening. McEwen had 4 3-pointers and a total of 14
points.
Still, South was still in the game until the very end. If it wasn't
for a sloppy passing spell things might have been different. On about
six of seven trips down the court, the team really lost their
concentration. The sloppy turnovers, i.e., "no shot, no rebound, no
possible put back, no foul on the play" really hurt.
Monica Carty had her best game of the season. She played great as
did spunky Jen Duggan who continues to battle for the ball and the
points.
Hopefully Don King can work out a rematch on Pay-per-View. Hopefully
Katie Parkinson won't go down with a sore right arm halfway through
the second half and Sarah Stanhope will be back at 100% and not need
pit-stops every few minutes.
Julie Cantagallo moved up to cross-over.

Feb 03, 1997 (Game #14): vs Rogers at Rogers
($2 admission but no programs.)

Neves and Figueras are too much for South Kingstown, as Rogers
wins 51-39
South didn't have it tonight, scoring only 39 points. Their previous
low was 40 points. And yet they were still in the game with about four
minutes left after baskets by Shellie Parkinson, Jen Duggan, and
Katie Parkinson brought South within eight, at 45-37, Rogers. But
SK was unable to get a shot off on their next three trips down the
court. With Rogers continuing to score and the time winding down
(49-37 with 1:30 to go), coach Kelli Fay-Wolfe cleared the bench.
Nine SK players scored, a high for the season.
Sarah Stanhope, still not 100%, scored 10 points to lead South.
Shellie Parkinson, often the top scorer for South had a rare
off-night. Jen Duggan continues to impress with her defense and
offense. Julie Cantagallo, who has a nose for the basket, scored her
first two varsity points.
Just when SCFun thought there were different rules for girls and
boys, Rogers set the record straight. SCFun didn't realize girls were
allowed to take hook shots, or running one-handers, or a simple "quick
release set-shot with your feet ALREADY set". (Even in the
shoot-around, you never see girls practice these shots - how was SCFun
to know?) But Akeia Neves and Maria Figueras did all that. They are in
a league of their own. Figueras may be the best all-around player
in the state
The sound system was good at Rogers. WADK's Bob Angel announced the
game and that was a nice touch. By the way, it appears the fans from
South Kingstown are getting short-changed compared to other schools.
E.G.'s schedule is two games longer than South's. Roger's is three
games longer.

Feb 10, 1997 (Game #15): vs Westerly at Westerly
($no admission.)

A really nice win as South Kingstown eliminates Westerly from
playoff contention, 73-56
It was SK's first win within the Southern Division. It was a great
win for the girls and coaches Kelli Fay-Wolfe and Joel Tuoni. (Lots of
points - the previous high for SK was 63 in a loss against West
Warwick.)
Sarah Stanhope had a great game as she scored a game/season/career
high of 20 points. She twisted the knife in Westerly's limp body. Her
ball control late in the game help cement the victory as Westerly kept
fouling intentionally and Sarah kept making them. She also got
her share of rebounds.
Marissa Justice planted the knife early on with two three-pointers.
She later added a couple more just when needed and ended up with 13
points. South had a rare advantage in three point goals.
Despite a few careless passes here and there, the team played great.
Shellie Parkinson had 18 points a a great all-around game.
Katie Parkinson rebounded well and along with Monica
Carty, looked good on offense. Both were constantly muscling their
way to the basket.
It was Westerly's senior night for Michelle Ahern, Erin Marino,
Krista Martin, Christe Ward, and Bethany Iacoi.
Bethany Iacoi, with 11 points, was "off" from the outside. She got
most of her points on layups off steals or on fast breaks. One of
Iacoi's steals came right at the half to bring Westerly within two of
SK's 29-27 lead.
The scored was tied 41-all about half-way through the second half.
Then South slowly pulled ahead. SK 47-45. Then things started to
snowball from bad to worse for Westerly. There was a technical foul
on the Westerly bench or coach, along with some nice individual
efforts (Becky Dangelo, Julie Cantagallo's nice feed to Shellie)
and suddenly it was 63-51 with 2:57 left. The rest of the game was
panic time for Westerly with Sarah taking advantage.

Feb 13, 1997 (Game #16): South Kingstown hosts Chariho
($3 admission yet no programs.)

The Rebels edge Chariho 41-40 on "senior night"
It came down to the very end, with SK up by three. Fortunately,
Chariho couldn't get the needed three points as Jessica Wood sank a
field goal for Chariho at the buzzer and South escaped with a 41-40
win.
Meghan Moore opened the game with a lay-up off the tip and South
ended the half up at 19-17. The Rebels got up by 11, 35-24, with eight
minutes to go. But then Chariho started to press and South could not
handle it. Luckily, time ran out.
Chariho's Becca Newman had a great game with her driving
stop-and-pop jump shots from within ten feet. Ariana Dolock picked up
many free throws as she was constantly taking the ball to the hoop and
getting fouled in the process. Candice Britt looked good on defense.
South's backcourt had 21 points with Sarah Stanhope's
game-high 14 and Marisa Justice's seven. Katie and Shellie Parkinson
played well off the boards. Shellie had 10 points.
South said good-bye to seniors Monica Carty, Jen Duggan, Shellie
Parkinson, and Meghan Moore. Tasha Evans read a poem in tribute to
the four.
Chariho's Emily Moseley was ill and unable to play.

Feb 18, 1997 (Game #17): South Kingstown hosts E.G.
($0 admission; no programs.)

Christine Kane leads East Greenwich over South, 57-48
It was the last game of the season for South. A bad season was
ending on a high note after wins over Westerly and Chariho the
previous week. A win over East Greenwich would have been the frosting
on a stale cake.
The Rebels led through most of the first half before East Greenwich
tied the game at 18-all with about three minutes left. Christine Kane,
took advantage of South's bad passing all night long. Her layups off
steals and in-bound passes held South down every time they tried to
get up.
South got some key baskets by Sarah Stanhope in the second
half to bring the Rebels within four at 38-34 and a little later at
44-40 with 4:08 left. But South could never get a run going and, at
the end, East Greenwich picked up some easy sloppy time baskets to win
by nine, 57-48.
Stanhope led South with 19 points and some timely rebounds
and steals. Katie Parkinson added 10 points while Shellie Parkinson
had nine.
Meaghan Almon, the EG freshman, looks like a "winner" and should be
a big factor in the future.
It was the last game for Shellie, Meghan Moore, and Monica Carty.
Marissa Justice and senior Jen Duggan were on vacation.
