Scituate - away
($2 admission, no programs.)
South Kingstown self destructs
The Rebels lost a tough one in Coach Steve McCarty's high school
debut. Everyone seems to be fond of saying, "It's going to be a long
season". The team will be lucky to match its four (within-division)
wins of last year.
The bright spot last night was the play of Jessica Kenerson.
When she gets the ball, look out.
Passing continues to be a problem, while breaking the press must be
a priority come next practice.
Jess put South up by nine points, 37-28, late in the game
when she sank a basket from close in and then converted the free throw
for a three-point play.
But then Scituate simply resorted to their press and ran off 10
straight points while South threw the ball away on about six straight
trips down the floor.
The Rebels still had a chance with less than a minute left but a
poor call on an out-of-bounds ball, that even had the Scituate bench
amazed, took whatever chance South had and killed it. Then in a
"having to foul" situation, it was over for South as Scituate added
a few more to end the night at 47-43.
Katie Parkinson battled a cold all night. The Scituate
student that introduced "South Kingstin" also sang the National
Anthem. She did a nice job.
The bus driver, for some as yet unknown reason, decided to go west
on the way home stretching what could have been a 45 minute ride down
295 and 95 into an hour drive through the back woods of Rhode Island.

Dec 09, 1997 (Game #01): E.G. - home
($3 admission, no programs.)
EG kills SK, 73-34
It was a good news - bad news situation. The good news is that all
the kids got in the game.
The only exciting moment of the game was when Meg Almon, from E.G.
chased a loose ball into her own backcourt, knowing if she picked it
up, it would be a back court violation. She sort of cha-cha'ed along
with the ball waiting for South to pick it up. Along came South's
Grace Dawson and as soon as Grace picked it up, Meg tried to tie
her up. Grace did get the ball away from her. What should Grace
have done? Just let the ball roll? If it came to a stop, how long
would the refs have let the ball just sit on the floor before blowing
their whistle and giving the ball to South out of bounds?
Christane Kane (21), Casie Rhodes (20), Meaghan Almon (11), Caitlin
Wilkinson (8), and Kerri Vetovis (6) led East Greenwich in this
"mother of all blowouts".
It was South's worst defeat in a long time. South lost to Pilgrim
two years ago, 73-43, in the old Division II days. Why can't South
play Division II where they belong? Especially in this "white-collar",
"Everybody Loves Raymond" town. Every year, the RIIL should drop a few
bad Division I teams down and move a few good Division II teams up,
etc. Shouldn't they? Pretty please?
Julie Cantagallo was injured (ankle) in the first half. Marissa
Justice injured her eye in the second half. Sarah Stanhope became
nauseous in the second half and asked to be taken out of the game -
was it the grinder two hours before the game or the score?
It looks like ProJo doesn't follow the standard of listing the
starters first. They seem to list by uniform number, perhaps the way it
comes off the scorebook. Too bad.

Dec 12, 1997 (Game #02): North Kingstown - home
($3 admission, no programs.)
South "hangs" for awhile, then falls through the floor
South, coming off their worst defeat in years, was surprisingly
still in the game with about 11 minutes to play. Then North Kingstown,
once again in those obnoxious (who's jealous?) matching shoes, got out
of first gear and outscored the Rebels 28-4 for the remainder of the
game and a 56-32 win.
South fought back early in the game and actually went ahead, 14-13,
on a nice steal by Sarah Stanhope who then drove left and passed
off to Marisa Justice who, with a little pump-fake, made the
lay-up. Then the "Rebel Plague" hit - you know, when the team throws
the ball away every time down the court, time after time after time.
Still, North finished the half only up by three, 21-18.
With about 11 minutes to go, Katie Parkinson got South back to
28-all tie on a nice rebound and put-back off a Jillian Tente miss.
Then the roof fell in or whatever the saying is.
A little more defense might have helped the Rebels. All the other
teams get in our face. Yet, when the opposition is on their 3-point
perimeter, South just plays about three feet off the ball, waving
their hands in the air, still allowing them to pass and shoot at
their leisure.
Sarah Tift, who had 25 points and 25 rebounds against Rogers the
other night, led North Kingstown with 22 points. Nicole Campbell had
15. North's Jill McEwen was missed. The senior, normally a year-round
athlete, felt it was time for a break.
Julie Cantagallo sat out, nursing a bad ankle.
Coach Kelli Fay-Wolfe and Vic, aka "Bif", stopped by with baby
Sean. At half-time, Kelli, in what can only be described as a
shameful example of a mother's misguided love and pride, slipped the
cheerleaders $20 if they would exit early. Then as the lights dimmed,
she paraded almost-7 month-old Sean to the center of the court. When
the "spot" came up, there was "Elvis", singing "Love Me Tender",
(actually a reluctant BIF was doing the singing behind the scenes).
Sean or, excuse me, Elvis - thanks to a remarkable wig, wore the
cutest white outfit with gold trim and gold sequins. The crowd loved
the bell-bottoms. Kelli has become quite the seamstress in her
stay-at-home days.
It was like homecoming with Joel, Shellie, Lindsay, Alicia, and
others stopping by.

Dec 16, 1997 (Game #03): Rogers - away
($3 admission, and they had programs. Praise the lord. How about that!
Good programs too, not the type that is filled mainly with sponsors
logos, the ones with half the names out of date. Go, Rogers!)
South struggles once again, loses to Rogers 47-33
South had its "15 minutes of fame" towards the end of the first
half. Julie Cantagallo came off the bench and provided a much needed
spark along with a couple key baskets. South scored at least 10 straight
points to end the half up by seven at 26-19.
Sarah Stanhope's two free throws put the Rebels up by one at
18-17. Sarah also had a couple nice assists to Katie Parkinson who
also had some free throws in that stretch to give the kids some hope.
Unfortunately, Rogers, behind Casey Fullerton (13 points) and a
couple three-pointers from Akeia Neves (9), outscored the Rebels, 28-7,
in the second half. The score would have been worse if Neves hadn't
been "off" in the first half.
Katie Parkinson looked good on defense and, along with Sarah,
had a good game off the boards. Sarah spent much of the game
bringing the ball up, much like last year.
Westerly's Chris Luppe was in the stands, scouting his next two
opponents. What was with the blond woman who worked the Roger's
concession table. She flew up to that handicapped spot and bounded out
of her van so fast. Was she really handicapped or just ignorant.
SCFun can't stand ignorant - sneaky is okay, but not ignorant. At
least carry a pair of crutches with you so you can "fake it" as SCFun
often does.

Dec 19, 1997 (Game #NL2): Prout - home
($0 admission, no programs.)
An exciting, sweet victory for the Rebels
It was a very exciting game. The Rebels opened with an 8-0 run and
led at the half by 26-14, yet it still went down to the wire. Prout's
Mary Marsiglio who came up with some clutch three-pointers in the
second half, made it a close game. She's a good ball player.
Prout tied the game at 38-all before the Rebels sucked it up and got
rolling again. Four kids ended up in double figures. When was the
last time that happened? (Please don't make SCFun go look it up!)
It was a rough game, just ask Julie, Sarah and Katie.
Coach McCarty made some big changes, the biggest was starting
freshman Lauren Hathaway. She wasn't even a cross-over previous
to this start. She had a great game. Naturally aggressive, a much
needed trait that most kids seem to have trouble even faking, she
constantly drove to the basket and picked up eight tries at the foul
line.
Coach McCarty also had Sarah Stanhope at the point and he also
tried a man-to-man, which worked fairly well.
SCFun's favorite play of the game had to be an inbounds by Marisa
Justice. Her football pass to Sarah was right on target and
Sarah was able to convert.
It was good to see Prout's Meghan Kane and the ever popular Morgan
O'Hara in action.
Julie Cantagallo and Bethany Moore were not 100%

Dec 23, 1997 (Game #04): Westerly - away
($3 admission, no programs.)
South continues to struggle, Westerly wins 49-37
South looked bad. Westerly looked better. South played both
man-to-man and zone, both ineffectively. Too many gaps, missed
switches, etc. Their passing still suffers. (Don't they realize the
other team is going to play defense - that those two or three girls,
with their hands up, surrounding the player that you want to pass to
aren't just going to stand there and let you pass?)
Westerly passed much better. They also had some good outside
shooting. They were led by Kim Crowley (13) and Melissa O'Meara (12).
South made a 3-pointer. How about that! Only our second of the year.
Grace Dawson sank it late in the game.
It's frustrating to see the team bypass good shots and pass until
the ball is stolen or the clock winds down. They have to get more
shots up. Even if they miss, some kids do manage to hit the rim and
there is at least a good chance they can get a rebound and have
another go at it. They have got to at least get a shot off.
Reminiscent of Stanford great Kate Starbird's "The Bigs and the
Littles", (you all read her funny website don't you?), - according
to one South observer, (we won't mention her name as we don't want her
tarred and feathered) South has its "Aggressives and its Meeks".
Often, the "meeks" won't shoot even when they are open. And on the
other side of the coin, the "aggressives", once they touch that ball
are going to put their head down and plow to the basket no matter
what. They never consider "passing it back out" to the open player.
Of course, they have to have their heads up and be looking first,
which they never are. There's got to be some "reasonable (is there a
better word) play".
It's hard to fault some "aggressives" who see little playing time.
The adrenaline is flowing so fast and they want so bad to score a
basket.
Anyways, things just aren't going well. Parents and players are not
happy. It's the usual, lack of playing time and of course LOSING.
WINNING would cure a lot of complaints. Added to the usual list of
complaints is the "Christmas Stress".
There is an unwritten rule that if you miss the last practice before
a game, you don't start. That has been expanded over the Christmas
Holidays. If you miss any practice over the holidays, you don't start.
There are some kids/parents considering canceling Christmas visits to
relatives in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maine, and other places because
of the stress the kids feel. These kids have got to realize that when
you play big-time Division I College Basketball, that the team comes
first. Hoo-wah!
The funny thing is, JV Coach Wayne Carroll was on vacation and
missed the Westerly game. Everyone have a little chuckle.
Are the other sports (swimming, wrestling, track, gymnastics, etc.)
going full speed ahead over the Christmas Holidays?
Stephanie Gama was missing last night; in Florida. Many of
the Rebel players were "hurting" from this new exercise they had just
tried the day before, making them all lame. They probably won't be
experimenting with new exercises again.
SCFun managed to visit with a few Westerly kids. Christie Ward is
going to Wake Forest, no sports, made Dean's List. Yes, Krista Martin
did break her arm. That's why she sometimes plays the trombone in the
URI pep band. Renee Hellert is well. Morgan Page, SCFun's Soccer
"Player of the Year" is planning to play soccer next year at either
Boston College or the University of Kansas.

Dec 29,1997 (Game #NL3): Narragansett - home
($3 admission, no programs.)
South loses in OT, 56-48
You knew from the start that Narragansett would win this game, it
was only a question of when their "cream" would rise to the top.
Playing behind most of the game, they took their first lead at 33-32
on a short jumper by Kate Letourneau with about 4:40 to go in the
game.
South's Katie Parkinson was sidelined with a bad ankle. Adding to
South's problems was the ref's whistle. Kids were in constant foul
trouble. Meghan McEntee and Marisa Justice fouled out. Others were
being pulled throughout the game. The refs were awful, more interested
in making small talk with fellow-ref Peggy Lynch on the sidelines. She
was there to root for Jen McGinity and Narragansett.
If only South could have made a trade with Narragansett before the
game and gotten one of their many ball handlers. Freshman Jackie
Thompson looked good for the Mariners. We'll take her.
South has got to go back to basics. None of the kids even know how
to stop their dribble when driving toward the basket. Passing remains
a headache. Violations at the foul line are inexcusable at this level.
The bench has got to come alive. The kids all sit there with "that
look" on their faces. They can't let whatever awful situation they are
in get the best of them.
Kate Letourneau (18), relying on a "turn around jumper against the
grain", and Heather Lakatos (17) led Narragansett.

Dec 30, 1997 (Game #NL4): North Kingstown - home
($3 admission, no programs.)
South blown away by North Kingstown, 61-26
South looked bad on a blustery afternoon in New England. For the fun
of it, SCFun tracked South's possessions for the first eight minutes.
In 13 trips, they had four turnovers and nine times when they got a
shot off. Sounds better than what SCFun thought it had been seeing.
But, right after SCFun put its Bic away, South had at least six
consecutive turnovers on bad passes.
South still cannot in-bound the ball or play defense. How many years
will it take to learn to in-bound. Can't they at least just watch the
other teams. The other teams seem to score so easily off their
in-bound passes under their own basket. The Rebels still run to their
designated spots like robots, with their heads down. And on defense,
they are like scarecrows in a garden.
SCFun is getting tired of being so negative. Let's say something
positive. Jillian Tente looked good shooting, plus she play some
decent defense. Grace Dawson looked good on defense. What else,
help me? Bethany Moore showed some "spirit" and wasn't afraid to
shoot. Summur Shaikh threw some shots up.
SCFun's pet peeve is still the lack of non-league games that are
played before the Division play begins. Why can't South have about
three games to get in sync like many of the other teams do? What's the
game limit anyways? Must be 24 or 25. South is only playing 22 games
this year.
Sarah Tift led North with a zillion points. North Kingstown was the
second best team in the Christmas Tournament and never should have
played East Greenwich in the opening round. So why were the schedulers
so unfair?

Jan 05, 1998 (Game #05): Chariho - home
($3 admission, no programs.)
South beats the point spread, losing to Chariho, 47-37
Chariho won on the legs of Becca Newman. She knows how to rebound.
She doesn't bounce on her tippy-toes trying to shoot the rebound off
balance. She grabs the ball, goes "down", and then explodes back up
toward the rim. She also cheats. She purposely misses free throws,
preferring to grab the rebound and try for a two-point field goal
instead. She does well pulling up and popping. Is there anything she
can't do. She scored a game high 18 points.
South looked good on defense late in the game when they pressed and
doubled-up Chariho. The Rebels stole the ball on at least two
occasions.
Katie Parkinson, perhaps due to her bad ankle, saw limited
action, but played well. She came off the bench to sink a quick basket
to tie the score at 14-all in the early going.
Sarah Stanhope played well. She drove the lane a couple times and
managed one "pull-up", that brought South to another tie, this time at
27-all.
South's "inside-outside" game continues to suffer, which is the last
thing you want going up against Pilgrim's Meg. Three point shooting
continues to be a no-no.

South breaks the "40-point" mark for the first time
Marisa Justice led South with some early baskets and some
great foul shooting, hitting 6 of 7 from the foul line. The team
itself shot well from the charity stripe, hitting 12 of 16.
The team had some good moments for a change. It would have been a
great upset but South just doesn't have the "staying power".
Becky Dangelo had a rare start as Katie Parkinson had to wait
for the trainer and the taping of her bad ankle.
Meg McGonagle led Pilgrim with 19 points. Pilgrim had no problem
breaking South's press with Meg simply standing tall in the middle to
receive and pass. Pilgrim passes well.
South continues to play poor defense. There is little or no
anticipation. Opponents shoot at will from the perimeter while South
hardly ever shoots from outside. Will South ever change its game plan?

Jan 14, 1998 (Game #07): Coventry - away
($3 admission, no programs.)
South loses again, 51-45, in a game that they had a chance to win
South was in the game the whole way - a rarity. It was their
smallest margin of loss (6 points) in a league game this year.
If they could only play some defense and shoot from the outside, the
result may have been different. Coventry probably scored about 25% of
their points from the outside while South probably scored about 0%.
Coventry pressed often but South handled it fairly well. South's
passing was better than average.
There seems to be something wrong with South. It's hard to put one's
finger on it. They seem like they are playing "up tight", as if
someone is looking over their shoulder. They never seem to have a good
playground type of flow to their game. They seem to pass forever as
the shot clock winds down.
With a minute to go in the game, and still a few baskets needed,
they are still passing and giving up on reasonable shots. With 25
seconds left in the half, they declined on plenty of open shots to
finally be forced to take an off balance shot with about three seconds
left. What was the point?
The Coventry bench and fans stomped their feet in the stands while
Katie Parkinson was shooting some fouls shots late in the game. Bush
league?!

Jan 16, 1998 (Game #08): Toll Gate - away
($3 admission, no programs.)
South loses again, 61-40
Yada, yada, yada - same old stuff. South simply refuses to play
defense on the perimeter while their offense refuses to take the
outside shot. There's no way South can compete with this game plan.
(Other team's outside shooters must foam at the mouth when they see
South on the schedule.)
Toll Gate had a tall team and they pressed most of the night. South
did so-so with the press. The open kids seem to go too far down court
instead of staying closer where they can be of more help. South still
can't inbound while Toll Gate inbounded so easily.
South continues to give the other team the three-point line and a
few feet inside. Toll Gate simply popped all evening from the outside.
Meanwhile, Toll Gate's defense picked South up well outside the
three-point line. Also, Toll Gate got in South's face. Toll Gate's
Moon, was playing tough "D" right up until the end.
When South does have the opening on the perimeter, they still
won't shoot. South will not play the percentages. The odds seem to be
better for at least getting a rebound if the shot is not made and
having another chance than they are for getting a shot off if the
passing continues forever.
Maybe South simply isn't quick enough to play defense. SCFun never
considered that possibility - it can't be. Anyways, SCFun is tired of
hearing itself complain about South's defense (or lack of it) and
their outside shooting. SCFun will try to never mention them again.
Sarah Stanhope, who made the cover of Sports Illustrated, was on
fire in the early going. Marisa Justice had two three-pointers, one
with 4/10 of a second left in the first half. She was also fouled on
that shot for a 4-point play that had South only down by four at the
half, 25-21.
South seemed to be in the game until midway through the second half.
But Toll Gate never had a let down. Coach McCarty threw in the towel
with about 4:10 left and Toll Gate up, 54-33.
Jillian Tente had a nice running one hander late in the game.
Meg Daniel (12) and Lauren Jackson (15) led Toll Gate while Chris
Montone was on the bench, in street clothes, most likely injured.
South's Summur Shaikh was injured with a bad finger.
Coach McCarty told SCFun before the game that he is trying to
schedule at least one more non-league game but, as of yet, it isn't
working out. He also hopes to get back into the Narragansett Summer
League.

Jan 21, 1998 (Game #09): Cranston East - away
($3 admission, no programs.)
South is eliminated from the playoffs by Cranston East, 48-43
South blew probably their only reasonable chance at a league win by
fading at crunch time. As an excuse, the kids were very upset about
new sexual allegations concerning President Clinton.
On their first possession, they did the "swing it" thing right down
to the shot clock buzzer going off. They must like to hear the sound
of that buzzer. Correct SCFun if we're wrong but there isn't much to
lose by trying something new or different, is there?
The Rebels opened the second half, down 14-19, with an 8-0 run,
thanks to an effective press to pull ahead 22-19. But South
unfortunately faded at the end with bad ball handling and bad passing
and a lack of maturity or experience.
Marisa Justice threw up a couple 3-pointers toward the end. (It
seems a little hypocritical to go to the outside shot in an emergency
while not giving it a chance during the regular game.)
Summur Shaikh, Jillian Tente, Julie Cantagallo and who else
participated in a nice run in the second half where everything went
right for a couple minutes. The kids were stealing and passing and
shooting very well.
Sarah Stanhope was playing with a bad cold or the flu and often
asked to be removed from the game. Many of the JV players were also
sick. Bethany Moore left at half-time, perhaps to study, as
finals start tomorrow. It's too bad the athletes don't get a study
break.
It's a nice new gym at Cranston East. The old gym was torn down to
make way for the new one. SCFun assumes Cranston East doesn't have all
their banners up yet. Didn't this same basketball team win the state
crown a couple years ago when they were in a lower division?

Jan 23, 1998 (Game #10): West Warwick - home
($3 admission, no programs.)
South gets the monkey off their back, beating West Warwick 58-42
President Clinton, a big fan of SCFun, upset over the kids being
preoccupied with his current scandal, called the team just before game
time and told the players not to worry about him. "I'll be okay", he
said. "You guys just go out there and play like you're capable of
playing".
Perhaps it was Clinton's call; perhaps it was the fact that Coach
McCarty decided to start "next year's" team now that South has been
eliminated from the playoffs - who knows. Whatever it was, it worked.
("Next year's" team is a joke, as there are no seniors, but the
Clinton story is true.)
It was great for the kids to, not only be "in the game", but to
finally win one. As much as you wanted the kids to beat Cranston East
earlier in the week, it was nice to see the Cranston East team excited
over their win. Likewise, it was very nice to see the South Kingstown
players excited over their win.
SCFun is not sure if South ever trailed. South jumped out to an
early 11-2 lead before West Warwick called time. Then, as South got
into foul trouble, West Warwick nibbled back and may have grabbed a
brief lead at 19-18 with 4:03 left in the half. (SCFun's notes are
inconclusive; someone was up by one.)
Regardless, or irregardless, South managed a 30-24 half-time lead.
In the second half, the Rebels continued to play well and never had
a let-down, cruising to a 58-42 win. At the 4:08 mark, the timer
forgot to start the clock. About 20 seconds went by before the
scorer's table woke up. The fans were yelling as "time left" was now
becoming a major player. The SK trainer walked over to the table to
enlighten the crew but the error was never corrected.
Sarah Stanhope and Katie Parkinson had some early
points to get the team moving in the right direction. Katie,
who had a tremendous night off the boards, also had a bruising night
as the West Warwick team was quite physical. Often the action was away
from the ball. Katie hit the floor a number of times in the
background as fans followed the flight of the ball. She must have had
quite a few black-and-blues.
Marisa Justice had three 3-pointers from outside. Jess Kenerson
had a great all-around game. Summur Shaikh was hot off the bench
with some much needed points. Sarah had a lot of blocks, some of
them without too much effort. She had a nice one early in the first
half when a girl beat her South defender, but was stopped at the
basket by Sarah.
South was in foul trouble a lot - Marisa, Katie, Lauren Hathaway.
The players off the bench, Jillian Tente, Meg McEntee, Julie
Cantagallo and others did a great job.
West Warwick was without their top scorer Alex Dutton. She and Chris
Mello, their 6th player, were on a religious retreat. Number 40,
Bliss, West's center, fouled out with about six minutes left in the
game.
The game had to be stopped early on because of the bright light from
a video camera being used by a West Warwick fan.
Why has the Bay View game been rescheduled to be in the middle of
exams? Hopefully not to make exam week easier on Bay View while making
it tougher on South. ??

Jan 26, 1998 (Game #11): Bay View - home
($3 admission, with programs.)
South can't overcome Bay View's outside shooting, losing 59-48
It was a good game. South was down by three, 46-43 with five minutes
left but just couldn't put it all together.
Bay View, down 11-4 in the early going, slowly took advantage of
South Kingstown's transparent defense and started hitting from outside
to tie the game at 11-all with 6:40 to go in the half. Everyone knew
Lisa Ercolano would be throwing up bombs from downtown, didn't they?
South eventually moved Sarah Stanhope up front on defense to help
against the outside shooting. Bay View's freshman center, Katie Blaha,
played great. She has some good moves inside.
Bay View's Katie Florence, who had been averaging 18+ points per
game, was on the bench with a broken ankle. She hopes to get back in
action in about a week.
Sarah Stanhope also had a nice feed from way outside to Jess
Kenerson for an easy layup to start the second half. Summur Shaikh
continued her fine play. Her pancake shot has developed an arc. She
could easily be starting anyday. Katie Parkinson continued her
fine game off the boards. Marisa Justice continued her fine
outside shooting.
South's defense seemed to do better just "getting back". They used
to take their time. The bench for South seemed a little more upbeat
than in the past.
The game was moved back from Thursday to Monday because of Bay
View's Winter Carnival that was postponed because of bad weather from
last Friday night to this Thursday.
The elderly gentleman that keeps score for South Kingstown made an
error in his books. The young woman who did the books for Bay View had
the right stats. Strange, but he didn't seem to care and wouldn't even
discuss the situation with the young lady. Why was that? (Last game
the scorer's table fell asleep on the clock, this time they fell
asleep on the stats. Unfortunately, South being the home team, his
error becomes "official".)

Jan 27, 1998 (Game #12): Cranston West - home
($3 admission, with programs.)
Another loss for South, Cranston West wins 51-36
It was a strange game. Cranston West was impressive. As the game
progressed, Cranston West's lead seemed to be getting bigger and
bigger and yet it really wasn't. South was always within a "run" of
getting back into the game. Yet Coach McCarty seemed to throw in the
towel early by clearing the bench and then later on, he seemed to have
a change of heart. With 4:30 left in the game, South was only down by
10, 41-31.
Summur Shaikh cracked the starting lineup as predicted. She
played well.
It's great to be aggressive but it can't be "blind aggression". A
few players unfortunately fall into that category. There is no
finesse, cunning, or slick to go with the aggressiveness.
Jillian Tente looked good with her shooting and willingness
to drive the lane. She is a good athlete with much potential. Grace
Dawson is another one. You just wish you could put them on a
wood-turning lathe and scrape off the nervousness and inexperience.
Jill, as do many others, had problems with her dribble. Too
many kids seem to think they can dribble through three defensive
players. Why?
Also, the whole team is so inexperienced that they continually
travel. There is just no composure whatsoever.
Katie Parkinson was hurt and sat out much of the game. She had
problems with her hip flexor.
Sarah Stanhope seemed "out of sorts" early on. Later, she played
the high post much of the game. This was a waste of time as she doesn't
have any experience and couldn't or doesn't know how to get free.
Strange, but it was South's third straight game when the other
team's star player was not in the lineup. (The Narragansett Times
won't tell you this!?) This time it was Cranston West's Alainna
Schiano who rode the bench with a back injury. She's already been
drafted by Fairfield University.
It was also the third straight game when the scorer's table screwed
up. What is going on? This time, South lost a 1&1 situation when
Cranston West committed its seventh foul in the first half. The table
made a feeble attempt to alert the refs but failed. Why didn't they
use the buzzer?

Feb 10, 1998 (Game #15): Rogers - home
($3 admission, with programs.)
South comes up short again, 55-32
Another loss. Rogers still has a mathematical chance of making the
playoffs. They weren't going to let South derail them.
South never had a prayer. It's too bad because the varsity could use
some practice - but, as it is, the JV-Crossovers get the practice.
Katie Parkinson displayed some nice moves under the basket. Grace
Dawson's stock rose as she was able to hit from the outside late in
the game. Her place in the pecking order has probably gone up a few
"rungs".
This "pass until you lose it" or "swing-it" game plan seems to go
out the window in the last few minutes of the game. Kids seem to be
shooting from the outside more often than they do during the rest of
the game. Why? When are points needed? How does the team get them?
Sarah Stanhope got pushed from position to position depending on
who was in and who was out of the game.
Rogers had a technical foul called on the coach when he became upset
and refused to sit down. "You can't tell me to sit down." He claimed
a Rebel kicked the ball and not one of his players. Sarah was able
to make one of two.
Roger's Casey Fullerton (14 points) is fun to watch. She really
seems to enjoy being in there. She likes to make the moves and she can
also use her left hand.
Why don't more kids use their left hand? Is there any accountability
in the recreation league?
Bethany Moore arrived late because of an errand she ran to
the airport.

Feb 13, 1998 (Game #NL5): Middletown - home
($3 admission, with programs.)
South looks good, beating Middletown 59-44
South started a new lineup with Jillian Tente at the point
and Sarah Stanhope moving up to the number three spot (small
forward). They looked good. The game started a few minutes early for
as yet, some unknown reason. Tune to WPRO AM because, when SCFun finds
out why, an announcement will be broadcast immediately on that
station.
The kids looked like the Celtics flying down the court. They were
moving the ball well, passing well. South was up 21-7 midway through
the first half.
Middletown slowly recovered. They hit a three pointer at the buzzer
for the half and then came out smoking to begin the second half.
In the second half, Middletown picked up their tempo. They pass very
well - fast, sharp, and crisp. With 7:32 to go in the game, Middletown
was suddenly within four, at 45-41. Quite a comeback. South's fans
started to squirm in their seats. But, South managed to hang tight
despite some bad passing and ended with a 59-44 victory.
Katie Parkinson had a great game in the pivot. She is
improving with every game. She has been taking lessons from ex-Celtic
Kevin McHale. Jess Kenerson played well. Sarah Stanhope seemed to
enjoy the #3 spot. She had some good assists. Marisa Justice had some
big baskets down the stretch that helped offset the bad passing and
turnovers. Jillian Tente played well and just needs a little more
experience.
Middletown is a very short team. They, however, held their own in
the rebound department. Their one tall player, Nancy Nevitt, didn't
play because she was sick. Their guard, #21, played a great game. She
had great quickness and all the moves.
South's Katie Parkinson was talking to the trainer in the second
half, perhaps due to a jammed finger.
Great game, South - players and coaches, keep it up!

Feb 18, 1998 (Game #16): Westerly - home
($3 admission, with programs.)
South almost catches Westerly before losing 51-44
It was an exciting game. South had Westerly in their sights all
night long. Sometimes the range was close, other times it got
telescopic.
A basket by Sarah Stanhope got South within two of Westerly
at 15-13 with six minutes to go in the first half. But then Westerly
surged. They came back with a 3-pointer and a run that was marked by
bad pass after bad pass by South. At the half, Westerly had a 32-19
lead.
The Rebels got within 10 on a few occasions in the second half but
then they started a serious comeback. With a little over three minutes
left in the game, Bethany Moore had a three pointer and a few
seconds later she had a nice assist to Sarah under the basket and
it was 48-44, Westerly, with less than three minutes to go.
But it wasn't to be as South's offense stalled while their press had
a leak and the game ended with a win for Westerly.
A couple reserves were in the game at crunch time while two starters
sat on the bench and that didn't seem logical to some South fans
because of the lack of experience at such a crucial time. But Coach
McCarty knew something the fans didn't and the subs performed
admirably.
South's Stephanie Gama had a big game with seven points
before fouling out in the last couple minutes. Lauren Hathaway had
some big rebounds down the stretch. Katie Parkinson got hit in the
nose or eye and had to sit out a few minutes in the second half. Meg
McEntee sat because of a recent ski trip that conflicted with
practice.
Westerly's Sarah Morin, a great softball catcher and a left-handed
(?) foul shooter, scored 15. Westerly moves well without the ball -
something South doesn't do well at all.
It was Westerly's last game of the year and South's last home game.
Although there are no SK seniors, there's a feeling that a few kids
won't be coming back.
The starting team has been set all year except for one position
that sort of rotates from week to week between Moore, Tente,
Hathaway, Shaik, and then around again. It's never easy.
(Good bye to Harry Caray, great "CUBS" baseball announcer.)

Feb 20, 1998 (Game #17): Chariho - away
($2 admission, no programs.)
South gets beat up, but beats Chariho, 38-31, to end the season
on a high note
It was a strange game. It was reminiscent of last year's victory
over Westerly on Westerly's Senior Night. It was a rough game. None of
the roughness was intentional. Give a lot of credit to South for
surviving. It was also a very low scoring game with a total of 69
points scored, the lowest this year.
It was a couple minutes before anyone got on the scoreboard.
South got on the board first and slowly pulled away. They held the
lead throughout the game until late in the second half when Chariho
tied the score. "Oh no, not another letdown."
South's offense had bogged down while their defense suffered.
South seemed to have blinders on when they had the ball. The kids
don't seem to realize that if the play "isn't there", they shouldn't
force it but go to something else. Unfortunately, the team is very
inflexible. They do force it, causing turnovers.
Chariho passed the ball with no real defense on them. The Rebels
just sort of shuffled from here to there, giving Chariho the 3-point
shot. South is very lucky that Chariho, a good 3-point shooting team,
was off or things may have been different.
South did very well not to crumble. They held their own and regained
the lead. With about a minute left, South was up by three, 34-31, when
things got away from Chariho and they started the fouling thing.
Lauren Hathaway and Marissa Justice came through with two foul shots
each to ice the victory, 38-31. It was an amazing victory.
Sarah Stanhope played some great defense, blocking shots and making
steals. Katie Parkinson and her replacements did a great job holding
Chariho's best player, Becca Newman, to only three points. Kerri
Sirois, another Chariho standout, didn't play - not sure why.
South was hurting for players all night. Julie Cantagallo was
a no-show. Katie Parkinson went down screaming with 3:41 to go
in the first half. She remained on the floor for five minutes while
people with varying opinions attended to her ankle. She never
reentered the game.
Jess Kenerson went down midway through the second half. Someone
fell on her neck and she hit the back of her head. She did return
later.
Sarah went down as she made a layup and cut her lip and
because of the blood rule and because Coach McCarty came onto
the floor, she had to come out. Grace Dawson took Sarah's free
throw and converted.
South made a substitution without the ref actually beckoning the
sub. South could have possibly been hit with a technical but the ref
gave them a break.
Bethany Moore was benched for being AWOL at a JV game the previous
day. Too bad, she had a lot of family in the stands.
Why does Meg McEntee laugh when she misses a basket (JV
game)? It seems her mother promised her $10 if she scored 10 points.
She had eight for the longest time and kept missing easy "gimees".
The bench was having a good laugh and she decided to join them.
It was senior night for Chariho. Candice Britt was Chariho's only
senior. She played well before fouling out late in the game. She had a
nice assist on a behind-the-back pass to her teammate.
A South County Waves' alumni, Candice will be attending Penn State
on a ROTC Scholarship, studying Chemical Engineering. Her father did
all the leg work. She'll have a four year commitment to the Army. Good
luck to Lt. Candice Britt.
(The Chariho male student working the table got 1570 on his SAT's;
took them again and improved.)
Coach McCarty treated the team at the Newport Creamery after
the game. Thanks coaches, players, parents, support staff.
