The JV Team won the State JV Title on Nov 1st at Old Mountain
Field. They defeated Barrington 2-0.
South got on the board at 11:00 of the first half. Lindsay Knapp had
a corner kick from the right. The kick ended up rolling around in
front of the goal as player after player kicked away. Stephanie
Gentile finally found an opening and got the goal.
At the 29th minute, Caitlin Vaughn drove down the left side and
passed off to Jillian Tente who headed toward midfield and then passed
off to Stephanie Gentile who easily got passed her defender for a
break-away. She scored from 12 yards out.
Sarah Stanhope was in goal for South. Jessica Broomfield played well
in the Barrington goal.
South was without Marissa Gama (the flu) and Kaitlin Franco who
injured her leg in Wednesday's semi-final game.
Aug 31, 1996 (Game #NL1): Pilgrim High (at Smithfield High - "Injury Fund" Pre-Season) ($2 admission and yet no programs.) Tremendous performance by Ellen Histen Sunny, about 75 degrees. Players warmed up by running while Shellie "I feel ready!" Parkinson relaxed in the shade. Pilgrim had 14 players while SK had everyone - 33 players with three girls missing due to work committments. Games were cut back to 25 minute halves. South dominated but could not score in the first half. Lindsay Fish, playing with a right knee brace, is back after her season-ending injury last year. She had a few shots on goal along with one by Katie Parkinson. Three minutes into the second half, Ellen Histen tore up the left side after a pass from Liz Horton and with three defenders chasing her, got off a strong kick that was too fast for the Pilgrim goalie to get. Pretty play. Stephanie Gentile had a chance moments later but her shot went wide. And then, with ten minutes gone, Ellen did it again. Same scenario as her first goal. Tammy Borrelli just missed a header on a nice throw-in from Alesia Gray. Katie Dougan impressed in the backfield along with some hard play by Lauren Testa. After the game, Ellen said "I'm pretty happy! I want to thank Liz [Horton] for those beautiful passes.".

Sep 03, 1996 (Game #01): Warwick Vets at Mickey Stevens Complex ($0 admission; no programs.) It was a well balanced attack by South The SK bus was about 45 minutes late (car on fire on Route 95), just time enough for a jog around the field. Warwick controlled the ball for the first 20 minutes of play, taking 11 of the first 15 shots on goal. With a minute left in the first half, South finally got on the scoreboard when Lauren Testa launched a shot from the left side, forty yards out. As it faded right, Katie Parkinson timed a perfect header from about twenty feet out for a 1-0 lead. South added four more goals in the second half. Liz Horton scored the winning goal on a line drive from the middle that hit the top bar and bounced a couple times before the ref whistled a goal for a 2-0 score. At 25 minutes of the second half, South got a little careless in trying to clear a ball from their end and Warwick's Karen Fandozzi put the ball into an empty net to cut the score to 2-1. Three more goals by South iced the victory. Lindsay Fish calmly collected a loose ball, took out her yardage chart, and hit a nice 5 iron into the upper left corner. The prettiest goal of the day came on a throw-in by Tammy Borrelli to Chelsea Wetherell, with Chelsea dribbling around her man on the right side and going in for a close shot, which bounced off the goalie, and then the slam dunking the rebound. Very nice. Tammy Borrelli scored herself after a drive down the left side and a shot by Katie Parkinson resulted in a loose ball. Tammy got the rebound for a quick put-back into the left corner. South had two girls go down during the game. Shellie Parkinson went down for the eight count when somebody's knee or hip hit her in the head. Keara Wolstencroft tripped late in the game and went down hard on her right shoulder. Katie Dougan and Anne Montgomery played well on defense.

Sep 05, 1996 (Game #02): Smithfield at Smithfield ($2 admission and yet no programs.) Lindsay Fish secures victory for South This game could have gone either way. "We just weren't playing right." declared junior Katie Dougan after the game was over. Luckily for South, half way through the second half, after a centering shot by Liz Horton, senior captain Lindsay Fish came up with a loose ball 30 yards out, in the middle of the field, and blasted a line drive that sailed into the net just above Smithfield goalie Becky Regan's outstretched hands. There were some near misses by both teams in the first half. Elise Dionne, who played an outstanding game for Smithfield, wrestled Katie Dougan shoulder to shoulder as she drove on goal from the left side. As Shellie came out, Elise took a shot but lost her footing at the same time and the ball narrowly missed the left side of the goal. Katie Parkinson came close in the first half as she followed up on a Katie Dougan free kick. The Smithfield coach really charged up his players at half-time. Elise Dionne had two strong shots on goal and impressed with her speed and ball handling. Also in the second half South's Katie Parkinson smacked a strong shot that Regan juggled before gaining control. Liz Horton almost sneaked in a quickie as she tried to redirect another shot from about ten feet in front of Smithfield's goal. Keara Wolstencroft was back after leaving Tuesday's game with an injured shoulder. Mindy Dudek and Tammy Borrelli had strong games while Liz Horton displayed some fancy footwork.

Sep 10, 1996 (Game #03): Pilgrim at Pilgrim ($? admission, ? programs.) South shuts out Pilgrim, 3-0 SCFun was not there and therefore must rely on satellite images for particulars. "Shots on goal" aren't available. "Assists" and "save" stats are suspect. Tragic. Lauren Testa scored the winning goal. Liz Horton went down with a knee injury and left the game for the emergency room. She had control of the ball, trying to fake out the defense, when a foot tripped her up. Her knee cap popped out. More later. Lindsay Fish and Katie Parkinson scored the other two goals. Shellie Parkinson was in goal for the Rebels.

Sep 19, 1996 (Game #04): Toll Gate at Mickey Stevens ($0 admission, no programs.) Katie Parkinson leads South over Toll Gate Katie Parkinson exploded for three goals in South's 5-0 victory over Toll Gate, in which South dominated, outshooting Toll Gate, 34-7. Thirteen minutes into the game, Parkinson took a pass from Keara Wolstencroft and fired from about 40 feet out. The ball bounced off Toll Gate goalie Meggan Daniel right back to Katie who blasted home a winner. Late in the first half, Katie took a ball from Lindsay Fish and treated the fans to deja-vu. Two minutes into the second half, Meghan Moore snuck a quickie into the left corner on a nice feed from Tammy Borrelli. Katie, with Kate Dougan assisting, and Chelsea Wetherell, with Moore assisting, finished off the scoring. Julie Catagallo injured an ankle or leg midway through the second half and was taken to the hospital for an x-ray. Kate Sikorski was unavailable because of a hip injury.

Sep 20, 1996 (Game #05): East Greewich at EG ($0 admission, no programs.) 0-0 Tie - good game; congratulations to both teams East Greenwich came out strong, and dominated the early going. East Greenwich had the first nine shots on goal. East's Erin McPherson continually drove the right side, sending shots into the center. Ten minutes in, Avenger Christine Kane, All-Everything, got loose close in (40') and sent a wicked shot at goal from 1:00 o'clock. South's goalie, Shellie Parkinson immediately picked up the "incoming" and made a great save, leaping off to the right to push the ball away. South didn't get a shot off until Tammy Borrelli's shot from the right side half-way through the half. After that two judges had it as a draw, while the third judge gave South the advantage. South outshot East in the second half, by 11-3. South had a couple breakaways (Lindsay Fish and Chelsea Wetherell) in the second half but couldn't convert. South's defense, led by Katie Dougan, Anne Montgomery, Kate McCarthy, and Mindy Dudek was impressive. Alesia Gray continues to display some fancy footwork while Jess DeAngelis played a strong game. Heather Ryan and Kerri Vetovis played very agressively for East. Christine Kane, East's leading scorer, looked good; she has a nice, soft, corner kick. NFL scouts were in attendance checking out East goalie Casie Rhode's "punting" ability - high and long. South's Julie Catagallo was out with a bad ankle sprain while Kate Sikorski returned to the lineup after being out with a hip injury.

Sep 24, 1996 (Game #06): Westerly at Westerly ($0 admission, no programs.) Katie Parkinson's goal beats Westerly 1-0 Katie Parkinson's goal was the difference in South's 1-0 victory over Westerly. It was a well played game by both teams with Westerly carrying most of the play, especially in the second half, when they outshot South by an inceredible 13-1. Thirteen minutes in, Chelsea Wetherell drilled one from the left side with the shot bouncing off Westerly goalie, Michelle Ahern's chest. Parkinson, who had just entered the game, was in the right place at the right time and with the balling slowly bouncing back the way it came, Katie, with her back to the goal, turned and kicked, driving the ball into the far right corner. Westerly's Morgan Page, the league's leading goal scorer, had a few chances but couldn't connect. Her best opportunity came in the second half when she fired at close range on Shellie Parkinson, but right at Shellie, who locked right onto it. Lauren Testa did a good job covering Morgan most of the afternoon. At the sixteen minute mark of the second half, Lindsay Fish set up Chelsea Wetherell coming down the middle and as Chelsea broke free and charged the goal, Michelle Ahern came out and both players went down with the ball going out of bounds to the left of the goal, resulting in a corner kick for South. Westerly's Amy Capizzano threatened a few times, thanks to nice feeds from Bethany Iacoi, but could never get a clear shot. She had one break-away but South's Katie Dougan easily chased her down. Twenty-one minutes into the second half, Bethany Iacoi lofted a very high shot towards South's goal. Shellie went up for it by couldn't find the handle. As the ball bounced in front of South's goal, Katie Dougan came to the rescue, clearing the ball. It was one of the more exciting games this year for South. Christie Ward played a strong game for Westerly at right back.

Sep 26, 1996 (Game #07): Barrington at Barrington ($3 admission and yet no programs.) Katie Dougan saves the day What a game - a "Thriller in Manilla" with two heavyweights going toe to toe. Barrington is an excellent team and battered South "No Glass Jaw" Kingstown with blow after blow in the second half. South's knees buckled a little but they never went down. Barington came out strong. Six minutes into the game, Jessica Sultzer, Barrington's version of Katie Parkinson, blasted a corner kick from the left that somehow threaded a needle of players in front of the goal and came out on Caitlin O'Neil's foot. She rifled a quickie that Shellie Parkinson never had a chance on and it was 1-0. It was the first time this year that South trailed in a game. Soon after, South subbed in Katie Parkinson and Lauren Testa and the "MO" changed quickly. At the twenty minute mark, Jess DeAngelis started a drive with a throw-in from deep in South's territory. Two fouls later, Katie "The Toe" Dougan set up for a free kick from the left, about 35 yards out. Her placement was perfect, just sneaking into the upper left corner, out of goalie Alice Kenney reach. Barrington went crazy in the second half. They had a couple strong attacks that never seemed to end. Barrington's leading scorer Carly Williamson was working her give and go from the left; Jessica Sultzer was doing her corner kicks; Katie Purcell was crossing the ball from the right; "headers" were going here and there; and yet nothing went in. Close but no cigar! Shellie made some great saves, especially a quick turn and grab on a ball that bounced off teammate Lauren Testa, right in front of the goal, and looked like it was about to "go in". South's Lindsay Fish had a good opportunity with about five minutes to go. She worked her way free and had a clear view from 25 yards out but her kick sailed over the crossbar. Barrington's Sarah Greene went down in the first half with a lower left leg injury. South's Mindy Dudek had her bell rung but appeared to be okay. Barrington's Liz "wonder woman" Albert played a great game. South Freshman Kristen Zepp and Ellen Histen saw lots of action and looked good along with seasoned freshman, Jess DiNapoli.

Sep 30, 1996 (Game #08): Mt. Hope at Home ($0 admission, no programs.) Kristen Zepp's header salvages a tie for South South Kingstown remained undefeated, with their third tie in the last four games, and maintained sole possession of second place, still trailing league leader East Greenwich. Mt. Hope looked good in the first half when they out-shot South 12-6. South had a free kick by Katie Dougan, 32 minutes in, on a drive that moved along as the result of two Mt.Hope penalties. Her kick from 35 yards out sailed high, over the goal. On the next possession by Mt.Hope, Kerri Ferreira drove the left side and, after being shoulder checked by Mindy Dudek most of the way, broke free and fired. Shellie Parkinson dived to her left but the ball eluded her and bounced up against the right goal post. Alexandra Texeira, flying in from the right, was right there to convert the loose ball. Mt. Hope had a 2-on-1 late in the half with Kim Lanzire electing not to pass off to her free teammate, her shot on goal being an easy save. South's Jess DeAngelis made a fine crossing pass just before the end of the half but Mt. Hope rode Ellen Histen off the ball. Katie McBride took a hard ball to the head late in the half and walked off the field. She recovered quickly. South looked much better in the second half. Alesia Gray had some nice moves going down the left side, managing to break free but her shot sailed wide-right. Lindsay Fish had a couple opportunities but her kicks were blocked or sailed wide. With ten minutes to go in the second half, South capitalized on a Tammy Borrelli corner kick. The kick, from the left side, sailed to the far side of the goal. Kristen Zepp, in her Air-Jordan's, jumped along with a purple shirt. Zepp won the jump ball and the ball bounced into the Mt. Hope goal for a 1-1 score. Two minutes later, Zepp came close again on a corner kick by Fish but her header sailed over the goal. Good game. The front line of Mt. Hope was impressive.

Oct 02, 1996 (Game #09): Warwick at Home ($0 admission, no programs.) Warwick beats South Kingstown, 2-0, at Old Mountain Field Scoring in both halves, Warwick made the most of their few shots on goal, and came away with a 2-0 win. South seemed to carry the play, outshooting Warwick 30-8, but could not find the net all afternoon. Twelve minutes in, Warwick drove the left side behind their scoring leader, Karen Fandozzi. A fake and the ball was crossed over to the right side, where Jessica McFall, also displaying some good footwork, fired a shot into the left corner. South had a few close calls in the first half. Ellen Histen came close after rescuing a Katie Parkinson shot, but her ball went wide-right. Also, Keara Wolstencroft almost beat Tina Fogg to a loose ball after a header by Katie McBride. Two minutes into the second half, Tara Klothenstein took a ball from Melissa Vulmer on her left and, after eluding her defender, fired, head-on from 35 feet, and scored an insurance goal. For South, the second half was a wait and see if Katie Dougan would score. Katie, playing up from her normal sweeper, took 12 shots, 10 in the second half, the majority from a good distance. One hit the crossbar; a couple came close; none went in. It was a rough game with Warwick drawing two yellow cards. On the short end of those penalty calls were Lindsay Fish and Meghan Moore. Meghan went down hard in her "collision" resulting in a very sore back.

Oct 04, 1996 (Game #10): Smithfield at Home ($0 admission, no programs.) Lindsay Fish gets South back in the win column Too close for comfort. South clearly outplayed Smithfield all afternoon but the game was still in doubt two-thirds of the way through the second half. Smithfield came out of the blocks fast with a near miss by Carla White in the first minute as she fired from the right, with South goalie Shellie Parkinson having to jump to push the high shot over the crossbar. Smithfield would then have only one more SOG in the first half. Midway through the half, Kristen Zepp, from deep in the right corner, passed back to Chelsea Wetherell who quickly crossed over to an open Lindsay Fish in the middle but her shot went high. Lindsay had another opportunity late in the half when she got by her defender and kept "coming and coming". Her shot, from about 20 feet out and from the right side, hit the goal-keep dead center. In the second half, with 13 minutes to go, Lindsay Fish scored the eventual game winner. She sent a shot from 35 yards out, square on. The ball hit the bottom edge of the crossbar, bounced down and spun back for the winning goal. South fans breathed a little easier. Ellen Histen crossed a couple nice balls from her left corner but South was unable to take advantage. South's back line of seniors played great - Kate McCarthy, Anne Montgomery, and Mindy Dudek. Meghan Moore played well in limited action - nursing a bad back from the previous game. It was soon after Meghan's emotional entry into the game that Lindsay scored. Julie Cantagallo saw action for the first time since her ankle injury. Liz Horton will start practicing with the team next week.

Oct 08, 1996 (Game #11): Pilgrim at Home ($0 admission, no programs.) Ellen Histen uses her head to clinch a victory for South as they continue their battle for first place with Mt. Hope and East Greenwich What a crappy rainy afternoon at Old Mountain Swamp. The 2-0 victory over Pilgrim was the best "hot shower" the team could ask for. The first half was scoreless. South had a few chances. Dougan to Moore to Wetherell went wide right. Katie Parkinson drilled a wicked shot that bounced off the goalie's hands but no one was there to challenge. Lindsay Fish took Kristen Zepp's pass off an interception of a Pilgrim throw-in and drove the left side, cutting in to the center, avoiding the defense but then firing wide. Pilgrim's right-forward, Lady Knuettel, faster than a speeding bullet, was a thorn in South's side all afternoon as she constantly drove the right side to the corner where she would release crossing passes. She also got free to shoot herself, one time sending South goalie Shellie Parkinson diving to her right to grab a liner headed for the left side of the goal. Thirteen minutes into the second half, Lindsay Fish grabbed a ball headed out at the goal line, half-way between the goal and the right corner. She turned and fired a shot across the goal. With the goalie diving for the ball, Ellen Histen headed the ball into the left side of the goal for the eventual game-winner. Pilgrim came close a few mintues later when Roseanne Pajciek (sp?) got around her man deep on the left side and sent a nice ball across the goal but Lady Knuettel couldn't get her timing down and the ball went out of bounds. With four minutes to go, South's Lindsay Fish gathered up a Chelsea Wetherell pass and from 30 yards out, at about 10:30, fired the ball into the upper left corner for a 2-0 lead. Anne Montgomery played a great game on the backline. Anne help hold Pilgrim's top goal scorer Heather Fraser in check. "Mudder" Lauren Testa wanted to play "two".

Oct 10, 1996 (Game #12): North Kingstown at Home ($0 admission, no programs.) Ellen Histen does it again, as she scores both goals in 2-1 defeat of North Kingstown Relying on satellite images again. Scoreless first half. Jess DeAngelis came close; Katie Dougan on a free kick (Lindsay Fish went down hard on the ball- ske's ok) shot high; and Chelsea Wetherell on a pass from Fish shot wide. Six minutes into the second half, Chelsea Wetherell from deep right crossed a pass that NK Goalie Andrea Munro may have touched at the end of her dive, before Ellen Histen took advantage of the easy opening. Eight minutes later, South's Lauren Testa fed Histen driving the left side and the southpaw drove one that hit the right post before bouncing back in for the score. North's Meghan Powers made the game interesting when she scored a few minutes before time ran out. South Kingstown back Mindy Dudek, on the sidelines after taking a fall in battle, complained of dizziness. Rescue was called to take her to the hospital where she quickly reverted back to her feisty self.

Oct 16, 1996 (Game #13): East Greenwich at Home ($0 admission, no programs.) SOUTH KINGSTOWN - It was a game the Rebels deserved to win, and Liz Horton made sure they did. In her first game back after a knee injury, Horton drilled a line-drive shot over the head of East Greenwich goaltender Casie Rhodes late in the second half that gave South Kingstown a most important Division I victory yesterday at Old Mountain Field. Although there were only five minutes left in the contest when Horton connected, it was a game that was dominated by the aggressive Rebels, who stayed on the heels of division-leader Mt. Hope with the victory. South Kingstown's pressure defense clamped down hard on the Avengers' speedy forwards and limited the Avs to just seven shots, while the Rebels constantly camped out in East Greenwich territory. The loss dumped the Avengers two points behind South Kingstown, and three back of Mt. Hope, which East Greenwich entertains today. EG coach Bill Harrison was watching a different team than the one that had been leading the division most of the season, but has lost three of its last five games. "We are not consistent. Mentally, we can't get ourselves into games, and that's been frustrating," he said. "South definitely outplayed us in every aspect of the game, and there's no excuse for that." Harrison said his young team needed some leaders on the field. "Right now, we don't have anybody stepping into that role," he said. South had a several players leading the charge to the East Greenwich net. Lindsay Fish, Chelsea Wetherell, Katie Parkinson and Meg Moore all took turns shooting at Rhodes in the first half. Injuries hurt the Rebels' cause late last season, when four key players were out for the playoffs. "We learned our lesson," coach Jim Kelly said. This season, Kelly and assistant coach Jenn Hodge are making sure the Rebs have a deep bench, with 15 or 20 players seeing considerable action each game. "If somebody goes down, we have to have somebody ready to go in," Kelly said. Horton, a junior, was a perfect example, Kelly said. "Liz was out for eight games (dislocated knee) and she steps on the field and gets the winning goal," he said. Horton battled an Avenger for the ball just before her goal. "I ran through the ball, putting my body into it, and ended up with the ball on my foot," she said. "When I looked up and saw the goal, I just shot, and it went in. I had to shoot then, they were right on my tail. It was now-or-never." By BUD BARKER Journal-Bulletin Sports Writer

Oct 18, 1996 (Game #14): Toll Gate at Home ($0 admission, no programs.) Alesia Gray and Tammy Borrelli provide the offense as SK beats Toll Gate 2-1 South had beaten Toll Gate, with the league's worst offense and defense, 5-0 in their previous encounter. SK fans were expecting the same results the second time around. South blasted away all afternoon but a combination of great saves by Toll Gate goalie Meghan Daniel and a little "no luck" and the run-away became a close game. Jess DeAngelis got the ball rolling twenty-one minutes in with a drive down the left side and a nice cross to Alesia Gray who kicked a winner without braking stride, putting South up 1-0. South had other chances - Daniel beat the charging Chelsea Wetherell by a hair to a loose ball at the edge of the goalie box. A free kick by Katie Dougan bounced loose at the edge of the goalie box with Daniel and everyone else not able to get either a foot or hand on the ball. In the second half, South went up 2-0 when Ellen Histen lofted a shot/crossing pass right over Daniel, who was positioned in the middle, ten feet out. Daniel was slow getting back and Tammy Borrelli, who was flying, blasted the ball, the resulting explosion carrying her right into the net. Twenty four minutes into the second, Toll Gate had South goalie Shellie Parkinson out of the net on the right side with the ball loose, rolling right across the goal line, but no one could convert. Late in the game, the action went the other way for a change, and with but one minute to go, South may have relaxed a little too much. Toll Gate's Rouse crossed from the left and suddenly there was Mary Duggan, one-on-one with Parkinson from about 10 yards out. Duggan drove the ball into the right corner for a 2-1 score. Lindsay Fish peppered Daniel all afternoon with no luck. Although it wasn't their last home game, South took the opportunity to say thank-you to seniors Lindsay Fish, Anne Montgomery, Mindy Dudek, Shellie Parkinson, Meghan Moore, and Kate McCarthy.

Oct 23, 1996 (Game #15): Westerly at Home ($0 admission, no programs.) Katie Parkinson scores as SK beats Westerly 1-0 Both sides played tough. Westerly came to the game in seventh place in a league where the top six go to the playoffs. South Kingstown came to the game looking to overtake Mt. Hope for the top spot. South is "now" in first place. There weren't that many shots on goal. In the first half, Westerly's Bethany Iacoi and Morgan Page struck out. A feed from Page to a streaking Iacoi was a little too strong and South goalie Shellie Parkinson barely beat Iacoi to the ball. Later, Page's header off a Christie Ward corner kick sailed high over the net. South didn't fare any better. Katie Parkinson blasted a ball that Westerly goalie Michelle Ahern blocked. The ball was free in front of the net but Ellen Histen couldn't reach it in time. Alesia Gray almost scored from the right side. The ball hit the left post and was free with Tammy Borrelli coming fast but not fast enough. In the second half the intensity level picked up. Twice a Westerly player went down and time had to be called for trainer assistance. Two-thirds of the way through the second half, South's Lindsay Fish took a corner kick from the right side. Tammy Borrelli got to the ball first, with the ball deflecting off her leg, high into the air. As the ball was coming down, Ellen Histen was going up but her header attempt struck out. With the ball now on the ground and waiting for someone to notice, Katie Parkinson raised her hand and asked "Coach, can I try?" Katie's blast flew by Ahern quicker than Bob Dole can blink. 1-0 South. Lauren Testa did a great job on Westerly's Morgan Page. Page broke free a few times but Mindy Dudek or Kate McCarthy were always there to take up the slack. Morgan Page confounds the mathematicians at SCFun by her ability to play at 110% all the time.

Oct 24, 1996 (Game #16): Barrington at Home ($0 admission, no programs.) South and Barrington battle to a 0-0 tie - Shellie Parkinson saves the day for South It was a beautiful fall day at Old Mountain Field. South outshot Barrington 24-11 but came up empty. With four minutes to go, the game came down to a direct kick by Jessica Sultzer just outside the goalie box. Barrington planted two players in front of the ball to confuse South goalie Shellie Parkinson. As Sultzer approaced the ball, the screen split off, and Jess fired a shot headed for the lower left corner. Shellie dived and was able to deflect the ball off to the left at the last second. Barrington's top goal scorer, Carly Williamson did not see any action until there was nine minutes left in the game. Catlin O'Neil and Katie Purcell played well for Barrington while South's big shooters were Kristen Zepp and Lindsay Fish.

Oct 27, 1996 (Game #17): NK at NK ($2/3 admission and yet no programs.) Ellen Histen and Shellie Parkinson lead South to a 1-0 victory over North Kingstown It was a beautiful night (60 degrees, no wind) for a rare evening game in this season plagued by the EEE virus. South looked flat or maybe it was just in comparison to North who looked sky high on senior night. It is unusal for South to be outshot but North did just that, by 18-11. In the first half, North Kingstown pounded away. Jill Baker drove the right side and made some nice crossing passes. Meghan Powers almost broke free of Katie Dougan. Almost. At one point, the field turned into a gigantic pin ball machine, with the ball bouncing from side to side with Sarah Tift finally taking a shot that went wide right. Ten minutes into the second half, North's Linda Ferencko came close on a shot from 18 yards out that hit the cross bar. The kick off the rebound went wide. Still no score. North suckered South into about three offsides (bound to backfire soon) during the game, suddenly running "the other way", catching South offside. After one such offside, South quickly intercepted the ball and Kristen Zepp lofted a soft pass to a streaking Ellen Histen. Defender Linda Ferencko slowed to look back and by then it was too late as Histen, Ferencko and North's goalie, Alicia Merdinyan collided at the ball. The two defenders went down and Histen stayed up, just getting a toe on the ball which slowly dribbled into the empty North Kingstown net. That was the game. North goalie Alicia Merdinyan was shaken up on the collision and time was out for about four minutes but she recovered and stayed in the game. Shellie Parkinson the South goalie had some great saves, including one on a header off a North Kingstown corner kick from the left side with seven plus mintues to go. Shellie was just able to deflect the attempt into the air and then gained control as the ball came back down. Shellie chalked up another shutout. SCFun has hired an accounting firm to count them. Jessica DiNapoli played some great defense for South. North said goodbye to seniors Meghan Powers, Lara Davis, Jill Baker, Laura Sullivan, Erin Petrella and Tristana Cullinan.

Oct 29, 1996 (Game #18): Mt. Hope at Mt. Hope
($0 admission, no programs.)
South Kingstown and Mt. Hope tie 1-1 in THE GAME of the season
South Kingstown and Mt. Hope soccer teams should be very proud of
themselves as they end ("almost") the season on a high note. What a
well played, hard fought game! A game that was going to decide first
place turned out to be another "chapter". Thank you, schedule makers.
South is now assured of first place although they may have to share
it with Mt. Hope if the Huskies prevail over Toll Gate on a Thursday
makeup. (Gee, I wonder if Mt. Hope will have any success playing "up"
this year? Dahhh!)
Mt. Hope came out smoking on senior night. The first ten minutes
were all Mt. Hope which means Kerri Ferreira and Kim Lanzire with a
little Alexandra Texeira mixed in. But after five shots on goal, all
Mt. Hope had was some near misses. By now, the Rebels, not used to
playing way up north on the arctic circle, thawed out and started to
mix it up.
South's Lindsay Fish had a shot that goalie Carmen Medeiros was
able to get a hang nail on and deflect into a tantalizing slow roll
right across the front of the Mt. Hope goal but no one was "there".
Katie Parkinson, on the edge of a break away, fired high. Alesia
Gray made a nice crossing pass to Chelsea Wetherell but the timing
was a step too slow. A nice combo of Alesia Gray to Kristen
Zepp crossing to Keara Wolstencroft on the left just missed.
Back and forth the action went. At half time, since everyone had
already seen a game's worth of action, the stadium was emptied and
everyone was charged another, separate admission to see the second
half. No one complained.
South got on the board seven minutes into the second half. South's
Katie Dougan drove a free kick from the right, about 35 yards
out. Mt. Hope got a head on the ball 15 yards in front of the goal,
but was unable to get it "out of there". Ellen Histen then
drove the loose ball to the left of goalie Medieros.
South was up 1-0. If they could only hold Mt. Hope for the next 33
minutes. Right! Mt. Hope is a scoring machine.
South's defense, led by Lauren Testa, Kate McCarthy, Katie
Dougan, Mindy Dudek and Anne Montgomery was superb. They even had
Kerri Ferreira shaking her head at times wondering "What do I have to
do to score a goal?".
Mt. Hope got a second wind at about 22 minutes of the second half;
going on "automatic" with one shot after another. Kim Lanzire had a
near miss that was suddenly bouncing off a teammate's head, headed for
the goal. Shellie Parkinson made a great save for South. Then it was
Kim again and then again, this time on a break away with the shot
going high and Shellie making another save as South refused to send
up the white flag.
With ten minutes to go in the game, Kerri Ferreira took a pass at
midfield, about 40 yards out and started driving. Even though she had
about three Rebel defenders on her, she was able to shoulder her way
closer and closer, angling to the left, finally lofting a perfect shot
that made it over Shellie before finding it's way into the far
right corner of the net. Great shot! Great game!
Will the final "chapter" find these same two teams going at it? We
shall see.

Nov 10, 1996 (Game #P1): East Greenwich at Pierce Stadium ($~3 admission; programs.) Shellie saves the day - South goes to finals Here's the ProJo article. SCFun won't correct the oversights or errors. EAST PROVIDENCE - Kim Lanzire and Shellie Parkinson have been in the right place at the right time all season. Yesterday was no different. Parkinson, South Kingstown's standout goaltender, made three key saves in a game-ending shootout that beat East Greenwich, 2-1, while Mt. Hope star Lanzire nailed down the Huskies' 2-1 win over Barrington in Division I semifinals at Pierce Memorial Field. Appropriately, the Huskies and Rebels, who finished in a dead heat for the division title, and tied two regular-season games, meet tomorrow night for the Division I MetLife Soccer Championship. The Rebels had to hold off a fired-up East Greenwich, who tied the game, 1-1, on a Christine Kane goal, then battled South Kingstown on even terms through the second half and two overtime periods. Then the Avs had to go one-on-one against Parkinson in a winner-take-all shootout. No easy task. After Kerri Vetovis put East Greenwich ahead, 2-1, in the shootout, Parkinson was unbeatable. She knocked away Catin Rooney's sizzler with a dive halfway across the net, leaped to snare Ali Peake's drive, then stepped to her left, right in front of a Michaela Keegan blast headed for the corner. Meanwhile, goals by teammates Liz Horton and Ellen Histen had given the Rebs a 3-2 edge, and the victory. Parkinson, a senior, said the Rebs have always been "the team in-waiting. East Greenwich beat us in a heartbreaker last year." She was determined that it wasn't going to happen again last night. "I just told myself, `You have to get the ball; don't think.' So I just put my brain away and let my body act. "It's my senior year. I didn't want it to be my last game," she said. By BUD BARKER Journal-Bulletin Sports Writer

Nov 12, 1996 (Game #P1): Mount Hope at Pierce Stadium ($~4 admission; programs.) The duo of Lanzire and Ferreira are too much for South Here's the ProJo article ... EAST PROVIDENCE - Mt. Hope stayed with what worked. Kim Lanzire and Kerri Ferreira, the Huskies' dynamic duo, who led the Interscholastic League in scoring with 19 goals apiece, scored two more last night as Mt. Hope won the Division I MetLife Soccer championship in its first try, 2-1, over South Kingstown at breezy cold Pierce Memorial Field. Lanzire and Ferreira, both 1995 All-Staters, had led the Huskies to Division II championships the last two seasons, and into a first-place tie with South Kingstown this year with an unstoppable scoring punch. Why change the game plan? The Huskies came out swinging, took a quick 1-0 lead on a Kim Lanzire goal off a Ferreira pass at the nine-minute mark, then took a 2-0 lead four minutes into the second half when Ferreira scored off a Lanzire assist. Shortly thereafter, the Rebels, who had lost only once during the regular season, and battled the Huskies to a pair of 1-1 ties, took away Mt. Hope's momemtum and made it very much a ball game when Katie Parkinson knocked in a Lindsay Fish corner kick. At that point, the Rebs, making their ninth appearance in a MetLife title game, started taking it to the Huskies. "It got crazy out there," said Mt. Hope senior midfielder Kendra Lanzire, Kimberly's sister. "South Kingstown gave us a run for our money. They were putting so much pressure on us at the end of the game I thought it would go down to overtime," said Kendra Lanzire, one of the Huskies' unsung heroines. "I was getting kind of nervous, but we played our hearts out to the last second and did it. We won." After Parkinson's goal, the South had three of the next four shots, two by Meghan Moore, and free kick off the foot of Kate Dougan that nicked the crossbar. With less then two minutes left, Fish banged another Dougan direct over the net. It wasn't the way South Kingstown's goaltender Shellie Parkinson wanted her high school career to end. "We started back in July," she said, after making 15 saves. "We practiced in 100-degree weather, in the cold, the rain, in anything, we were out there. We never gave up. "So right now I'm pretty disappointed, but I can't be disappointed in our efforts, just the results." "We were so dedicated. We had the drive, the intensity and the heart. We had a great team," she said. None of that was enough last night however. Ferreira, a senior, and Kim Lanzire, a junior, were all over Parkinson in the first half and in the second half before the Rebs broke through. Although the shots were pretty even in the opening 40 minutes, all but one of Huskies' were on target, while Mt. Hope goaltender Carmen Medeiros was called upon to make two saves in the first half, five all night. The highest-scoring team in the division, Mt. Hope hit the ground running, with Ferreira forcing Shellie Parkinson to make two saves before five minutes had elapsed. Minutes later, Ferreira broke down the middle and shoveled the ball ahead to Kim Lanzire, roaring in from the right wing. It was a scene familiar to Mt. Hope fans. Lanzire moved in and unloaded a hard-angle shot behind Parkinson that one-hopped into the corner of the net. Parkinson saw a lot more of the Huskies' duo for the remainder of the half, with Ferreria sending four shots her way and Lanzire two. With strong midfield kicks from Kendra Lanzire, Mt. Hope had the territorial advantage in the opening 40 minutes. But South, who lost midfielder Anne Montgomery with a knee injury 13 minutes into the game, had a couple of chances to get on the scoreboard. The best came 11 minutes in when Fish chipped a tough-angle shot off the right post. Ferreira got what proved to be the game-winner after Kim Lanzire did most of the work, four minutes into the second half. Kim Lanzire battled the ball away from a pair South Kingstown defenders on the right sidelines, then broke down the wing and made a perfect cross to Ferreira, who beat a defender, then Parkinson, with a shot off the right post. Katie Parkinson's header got the Rebels fired up, but the Huskies had enough left to hold on to their biggest win yet. "We knew (South) wasn't going to quit," Ferreira said, "but stayed together, played hard, and came out on top." By BUD BARKER Journal-Bulletin Sports Writer
