Aug 30, 1997 (Game #NL1): Toll Gate High (at Smithfield High - "Injury Fund" Pre-Season) ($2 admission; no programs.) Who was throwing the banana peels out of the left side of the school bus on the way up to Smithfield? Lots of players were missing - 23 played. Ellen Histen scored two goals, the first within about two minutes of the start. Kaitlin Franco, Katie Dougan, and Jess DeAngelis also scored. Katie's goal was a free kick from 40 yards out on the right side. The ball sailed over the outreached hands of the Toll Gate goalie. The SK goalies rarely got their hands on the ball as SK carried the play all game long.

Sep 02, 1997 (Game #01): Mount Hope visits OMF ($0 admission; no programs.) Histen and Dougan save the day for South Kingstown The state champs, Mount Hope, came to Old Mountain Field for the Rebels' Opening Day and almost left with a victory. Had it not been for a great "back save" by Katie Dougan early in the second half and a patented Ellen Histen goal halfway through the second half, Mount Hope would have had a less than well deserved victory. South outplayed Mt. Hope in the first half and dominated the second half. At one point a shot by the Rebels hit the cross bar and bounced back to mid-field, to be followed by another shot that again hit the cross bar. It seemed like South couldn't buy a goal. On the other hand, one of Mt. Hope's few shots on goal was a perfect loft by Kim Lanzire, from about 30 yards out on the left, that floated over Sarah Stanhope to find the corner of the net. Thank God Dougan was in the right place at the right time as a Mt. Hope header came from nowhere. Histen scored from the left on a nice feed from Alesia Gray coming down the middle of the field. Play was delayed on four occasions as three Mt. Hope players (Shireman, Lanzire twice, and Saviano) went down with leg injuries. Tammy Borrelli had fun, especially with the ref on one drop kick situation. Christine King's header, off a nice feed from Jess DiNapoli just missed. Starting for the Rebels, from left to right, were Stanhope, Dougan, Kyla Sand, DiNapoli, Borrelli, Lauren Testa, Chelsea Wetherell, Liz Horton, Gray, King, and Katie Parkinson.

Sep 04, 1997 (Game #02): at Warwick Vets ($0 admission; no programs.) Penalty shot by Warwick's Fandozzi spoils the day It was another frustrating game at the smelly Mickey Steven's complex. The game turned on a controversial penalty on South Kingstown. None of the South fans saw the "push" or whatever it was on Warwick's Karen Fandozzi in the box. Regardless, she put the penalty kick from 10 yards out into the right corner for the eventual game winner. South outplayed Warwick most of the game except for the later stages of the first half and the first 15 minutes into the second half. Hopefully, the loss will turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Once again South had very little luck. Lauren Testa, Alesia Gray, Chelsea Wetherell, and Grace Dawson all had near misses. Dawson's header came off a nice feed from Katie Parkinson who out-muscled and out-maneuvered her man in the right corner. There was only one stop of the clock, late in the second half, when a Warwick player went down for a couple minutes. South's goalie, Sarah Stanhope had few chances but did punch a difficult bounce over the net for a nice save early in the game. Starting for the Rebels, from left to right, were Stanhope, Dougan, Kyla Sand, Katie McBride, Borrelli, Lauren Testa, Chelsea Wetherell, Liz Horton, Gray, King, and Katie Parkinson.

It looks like the Providence Journal was at the game. Shouldn't they have covered the last game, between last year's two state finalists?? Fandozzi's goal, Fogg's saves boost Hurricanes, 1-0 WARWICK - Karen Fandozzi and Tina Fogg got the job done for Warwick Vets yesterday. Fandozzi's task was short and sweet. She slammed a penalty shot past South Kingstown goaltender Sara Stanhope early in the second half in the Hurricanes' 1-0, Division I win. But it was a long, tedious haul for Fogg, Warwick's outstanding goaltender, who was bombarded with 26 Rebels shots, most of them in a first half that South dominated. Warwick, hammered 5-1 by Westerly in Tuesday's season-opener, didn't get a quarter of those shots, but Fandozzi, the 'Canes' top gun, cashed in the big one after a South Kingstown defender grabbed her jersey in the penalty area six minutes into the second half. "I just looked low, and put it in the corner," Fandozzi said. "I was just relieved to see it go in." Fogg had to be relieved too. The Warwick goaltender, who wasn't in the nets against Westerly, was tested and retested in the first half. She punched a Laura Testa's 25-yard shot over the crossbar with a leaping one-hand jab, raced out to smother a corner kick on the back line, and spun to deflect a tough-angle smash by Kate Parkinson late in the first half. The Rebels, who had tied defending state champion Mt. Hope on Tuesday, were very much in command during the opening 40 minutes but couldn't beat Fogg, who got help from defenders Amanda Hovey, Jess Arnold, Katie Blanchard and Colleen Evans. "It was a little busy early," said Fogg. "But the team played really good in the second half." After rarely getting out of their own end of the field in the first, Warwick took it to the Rebels in the second. "We gave up way too many shots in the first half," Warwick coach Tom Flanders said. "Our halfbacks had to step it up a bit and they did. We made a few substitutions and things worked out for us in the second half." Although scoring opportunities were few, Warwick toughened up in the midfield, and kept the action away from Fogg. "Our coaches got us up at halftime, and after we got the goal, it was our game to win," Fandozzzi said. The Rebels had Fogg on the ground but couldn't get a shot off on one second-half rush, and South Kingstown didn't get a shot on net until Chelsea Wetherall's at the corner 20 minutes in. Fogg stopped it. South kept the pressure on the rest of the way, but Fogg came up with seven straight saves, the big one being a jumping two-handed grab of a 15-yard Alesia Gray bullet. South coach Jim Kelly said his team didn't capitalize on its chances in the first half, "and (the Hurricanes) were winning the 50-50 balls in the second. They played more aggressive than we did. "They deserved to win." Actually the 'Canes picked up where they left off last year, when they were the only team to beat South during the regular season. "When you beat a team of South's caliber, you start thinking that you are doing something right," said Flanders. By BUD BARKER Journal-Bulletin Sports Writer

Sep 09, 1997 (Game #03): at Smithfield ($2 admission; no programs.) South rides Katie Dougan's direct kick to their first victory of the season South can breathe a little easier now, having gotten that first victory of the season. Once again veteran Katie Dougan came through. Halfway through the first half, Katie was fouled. In what looked to be a not so instant replay of her kick in the Injury Fund game a week and a half ago, Katie's direct kick, from about 35 yards out on the right, was once again right on target. It didn't hurt that Smithfield's goalie had the sun to contend with also. Once again South dominated the game except for the early going and a short stretch in the second half. And once again, South also had very little to show for all their dominance. A nice Tammy Borreli feed to Alesia Gray - almost. Julie Cantagallo - almost. A Summur Shaikh bullet, and then Katie Parkinson's putback on the rebound - almost, almost. Another shot by Alesia - almost. And so it went. Ellen Histen showed her speed as she made a nice pass to herself. Borrelli, coming off a sore back from the last game played well. Liz "what hand ball" Horton was tough on "D". Smithfield had one thrown-in attempt almost "walk in" to the South goal as the South defense seemed to be in a momentary trance. Elise Dionne played well and was almost able to dribble the length of the field before South shut her down. "It's the yellow line, girls." The refs kept reminding South as the Rebels had problems with the two lines, one yellow, one white. Talk about a home field advantage. There were some questionable calls, and a few times, one ref was over-ruled by the other. Only one Smithfield girl (#5) went down. She was up in about a minute. South goalie Sarah Stanhope had another slow day at the office. She did have one good save on one of those high ones that she managed to push up and over. Jess DeAngelis was sidelined with an ankle injury. Starting for the Rebels, from left to right, were Stanhope, Christine King, Dougan, Kyla Sand, Lauren Testa, Chelsea Wetherell, Horton, Cantagallo, Parkinson, Histen and Gray.

Sep 11, 1997 (Game #04): at Pilgrim ($0 admission; no programs. They did sell those "fund raising" candy bars at the gate. That's great. People love to donate when they get something back for their money, even if it's a program that costs about 2 seconds and 2 cents to produce.) South Kingstown continues to shoot blanks - another tie South continues their terrible scoring slump. The shots are there but they are either too high, too wide, too weak, who knows. Some shots are wasted, simply sent for the sake of shooting, rather than being set-ups for someone else; they turn out to be big fat "lollipops" for the other goalie - what's the point? Perhaps the new Block Scheduling has had the undesired effect of "slowing the kids down", i.e., they lose that momentum they used to have from changing classes every 50 minutes as they did in the past. There were mechanical problems with the field. The east side was not able to be lowered to a level position and the kids had to play with it stuck in place, resulting in an annoying three degree incline. The last two mintues were frantic as Alesia "Fancy Feet" Gray had three consecutive corner kicks that were right there; South just couldn't pull the trigger. These were followed by one last corner kick by Ellen Histen which went wide as time ran out. Close but no cigar. South had a great opportunity with that "pig chase" 19 minutes into the second half when the ball, or "pig" was darting all over the place right in front of the Pilgrim goal, for what seemed like an eternity - the Pilgrim goalie, Angelone, lost control before eventually getting the ball back, tucked between her legs. The team played well. Histen played well, shoulder to shoulder. Christine King had a nice feed to Tammy Borrelli who lost her footing, unable to get a shot off right in front of the Pilgrim goal. Alesia Gray had some nice shots, one missing by a hair. Katie Parkinson did well with her corner kicks. Grace Dawson had some nice feeds from her right corner spot. Sarah Stanhope was busier than in her past games at goalie. Lauren Testa continues to play a great communication game in the middle. Jess DeAngelis didn't dress, still bothered by a bad ankle. Who started? SCFun was a few minutes late, unconsciously drawn to Mickey Stevens by the great aroma of rotting six-month old garbage. Guess who else screwed up - I'll never tell, J.H.

Sep 15, 1997 (Game #05): at North Kingstown ($3 admission; no programs.) Two goals in one game - Wow! Horton and Borrelli lead SK over NK It was an exciting game. Although South controlled much of the game, towards the end, it seemed like North was in control for an eternity. South got on the board 10 minutes in when Katie Dougan, from midfield, lofted a nice chip shot to a pin placement about 25 yards in front of the goal. Katie Parkinson intercepted with a nice header and the race was on between the North defense and Liz Horton. Horton won the race and put the ball into the right corner. Late in the second half, North took advantage of a weary South defense. From the left, Lundin and Michelle Towsey worked well together and Lundin's shot sailed into the upper right corner. An envigorated North team was sky high and showed no let-up. It looked like South might be lucky to escape with a tie. But, with about five minutes left, Alesia Gray did her thing midfield, right sideline. The ball quickly moved diagonally across the field, from Gray to Parkinson to Histen with a great feed to Tammy Borrelli who got it to the right of goalie Alicia Merdinyan as she came out of the net, for the winning goal. Sarah Stanhope had a busy night. She had problems with a slow roller but was able to beat North to the ball just in time to tie it in knots with her legs. Jess DeAngelis remained sidelined. Chelsea Wetherell went down late in the game and limped off with a bad knee. Starting for the Rebels, from right to left, were Stanhope, Christine King, Dougan, Jess DiNapoli, Horton, Lauren Testa, Chelsea Wetherell, Julie Cantagallo, Gray, Parkinson, and Borrelli.

Sep 18, 1997 (Game #06): East Greenwich visits OMF ($0 admission; no programs.) South Kingstown loses (?) another one on a penalty call With five minutes to go, Kerri Vetovis fell in the box and the ref called for a penalty kick. Zip, into the left corner and the Rebels lose, NOT - it only tied the game at 1-all, but under those circumstances, with time running out and up by one, it just felt as bad as a loss. It was an exciting game. Both teams had many chances. In the first half, EG's Lauren Ciccone penetrated deep into the left corner, but instead of shooting, tried to set something up. She was stripped of the ball but it was still a good try. Kerri Vetovis had a free kick sail high and Ali Peake had an opening in the middle but couldn't convert. For South, Katie Dougan had a couple free kicks but came up empty. A nice feed from Alesia Gray, from the right corner, to Bethany Moore (playing in her first varsity game this year) in front of the goal failed. Christine King had a nice solo effort, streaking down the left side as did Dougan coming through the middle. It wasn't until late in the first half that the Rebels finally scored. King passed to Katie Parkinson on the right who, from about 35 yards out, sliced a bouncing ball past EG goalie Christine Kane, the ball curving into the left corner, appearing to hit the left post before rolling in. In the second half, the goalies could not see each other as the ground fog got heavier and heavier. From the left, Ellen Histen sent a great ball rolling right across the EG Goal but Tammy Borrelli just couldn't find the trigger and the ball just kept rolling off to the right. EG's Caitlin Rooney had a free kick but that sailed high. Parkinson had three consecutive corner kicks about 28 minutes in, the last one resulting in a Grace Dawson header that went high. Katie McBride played very well on defense for the Rebels. But, once again, South seemed to tire late, as EG controlled the late minutes. East Greenwich still had Casie Rhodes sidelined with a bad finger and Michaela Keegan in her final days with a cast. South was without Lauren Testa, who had a previous commitment, and Jess DeAngelis who obviously didn't get an OK from the doctor on Wednesday. Starting for the Rebels, from left to right, were Sarah Stanhope, Dougan, McBride, Jess DiNapoli, Liz Horton, Chelsea Wetherell, Gray, Borrelli, Parkinson, King, and Histen.

Sep 22, 1997 (Game #07): at Toll Gate ($0 admission; no programs.) Bethany Moore rescues South Kinstown Bethany Moore, playing in only her second game of the season saved the day for the Rebels with her goal late in the second half. This game may have been decided before it started, with the flip of the coin. It was a one-way game. Whoever had the wind and sun at their back dominated. Toll Gate in the first half, South in the second. South continues to play great but they just can't deliver a knock out punch. The other team never "goes down". With a little luck either way, South could be having a great season or a lousy season. They have never played with a "cushion". The wind was the biggest factor in this game. With ten minutes left and Toll Gate going against the wind, their goal kick looked like a soft sand wedge and the Rebel's Bethany Moore was right there to collect the ball. With her defender right on her shoulder, Bethany was able to keep control. Almost going down, she managed to regain her footing and kept moving forward, putting it past the goalie from just off to the right, from about 15 yards out. In the first half Chelsea Wetherell had some nice feeds as did Christine King. One of King's feeds was to Leslie Cipriani, stationed at the left corner of the goal. Unfortunately, the ball kept going and Cipriani ended up rolling in the dirt, right into the Toll Gate goal. Number 26 for Toll Gate (Erin?) played a great game in the first half. The second half saw many fouls by Toll Gate and many free kicks by South, usually by Katie Dougan. One, however, was taken by Summur Shaikh from 35 yards out on the right. Her shot was right on target. Toll Gate's Meghan D'Angelo made a great save, just managing to push the ball "up and over". One of Toll Gate's ball girls was in the team uniform which was a little confusing and surprising that it was even allowed. Starting for the Rebels, from left to right, were Sarah Stanhope, Dougan, Kate McBride, Lauren Testa, King, Liz Horton, Alesia Gray, Wetherell, Tammy Borrelli, Katie Parkinson and Ellen Histen.

Sep 24, 1997 (Game #08): Westerly visits OMF ($0 admission; no programs.) South Kingstown 3 Westerly 0; goals by Parkinson, Wetherell, and Testa South Kingstown finally got some production. Usually their offense gets the shots but comes up empty. In this game, however, they managed to score three goals, their highest output so far this season. Keep it up. Thirty-three minutes into the game, Chelsea Wetherell's header off a great feed from Summur Shaikh on the left missed an open net. Eventually Christine King gathered up the rebound and circled back out and up the right side and crossed the ball over to the middle where Katie Parkinson was able to reverse her forward momentum, gather the ball, turn, and put it into the left corner, just getting it past the Westerly goalie, Murano. 1-0. In the second half, about 16 minutes in, Ellen Histen, brought the ball up the left side. A pass to King near the end line, another pass to Liz Horton, who lofted the ball for a nice header by Wetherell, about ten feet in front of the Westerly goal. 2-0. With about 12 minutes left in the game, Lauren Testa took a free kick from about 28 yards out on the left, from about 10:30 on the clock. Westerly's goalie, Murano, seemed to get a hand on the ball as it bounced and sliced to her right, a few feet in front of the goal. But the ball continued bouncing, right into the left corner. 3-0. Westerly's Morgan Page had a nice chance when she got half a step on her defender but her shot from the left side was smothered by Sarah Stanhope. Lauren Testa did a great job all night long on Page. Chelsea Wetherell had a great game. Another header early in the game hit the cross bar. Katie Parkinson came close when she had a race for a loose ball with Westerly's goalie. Both reached the ball at the same time. Ellen Histen worked well with Parkinson as well as having her great "left side game", with numerous crosses to the middle. Lindsay Knapp got a yellow card late in the game, perhaps for reckless play as her aggressiveness carried her up and over her man's back, temporarily "shaking up" the Westerly player and causing a delay in the action. Alesia Gray and Leslie Cipriani both missed the first half with other commitments. Starting for the Rebels, from left to right, were Stanhope, Dougan, Kate McBride, Testa, Jess DiNapoli, King, Horton, Wetherell, Tammy Borrelli, Parkinson and Histen.

Sep 30, 1997 (Game #09): at Mount Hope ($2 admission; no programs.) Mount Hope outplays South Kingstown for a great win at home Mount Hope outplayed South Kingstown most of the night. They out-hustled the Rebels, took advantage of scoring opportunities, and then withstood a "little too late in the game" surge by South for a hard fought 2-1 victory. The play was rough on both sides yet there weren't many whistles. South Kingstown protested that Mount Hope was playing with 12 players, but after visiting the TV booth and looking at some slow motion replays of the action, the refs determined that Kim Lanzire's great play simply seemed to result in the allusion that Mount Hope had an extra player on the field. Every Mount Hope throw-in, deep in South's territory, was always a lob to Lanzire who always gained control and headed the ball towards South's goal. Mount Hope got on the board three minutes in when a corner kick from the right by Allison Vale ended up on the ground about six yards in front of the goal. Eriaka Saviano sent it high-center for a 1-0 Mount Hope advantage. About eight mintues into the second half, South's great defense cracked. A loose ball got by South's sweeper, Katie Dougan, when she had trouble with her footing, and Mount Hope suddenly had a 2-on-1 advantage with Alexis Bouchard coming in from the left and finding the right corner, past South's goalie Sarah Stanhope. South got on the board half-way through the second half when Lindsay Knapp crossed the ball from the right corner and Tammy Borrelli, from just a few feet in front of Mount Hope's goal, met the ball and put it home for a pretty goal. There was lots of confusion late in the first half. South was going for a ball close in and Mount Hope's goalie, Carmen Medeiros was coming out to meet it. Some writers thought it was obstruction by another Huskie; others thought Medeiros got a yellow card for improperly picking up the ball. Regardless, it was three "takes" before the refs got it right. Alesia Gray came from nowhere for a direct kick that flew over the goal. But either the refs weren't ready or it was suppose to be indirect. Then another kick, this time indirect, resulting in a shot just missing to the left of the goal. Then Alesia tried a third time (why?), again from the same spot, and Mount Hope gained control and kicked it away. Ellen Histen, Christine King, and Katie Parkinson worked well together. They all had some shots at goal but came up empty. Lauren Testa had her hands full with Lanzire all night. Jess DeAngelis came off the injured list after missing six games but didn't play. Starting for the Rebels, from left to right, were Stanhope, Dougan, Kate McBride, Testa, King, Gray, Liz Horton, Julie Cantagallo, Borrelli, and Parkinson.

The Providence Journal was there. Huskies nip Rebels, 2-1 WARREN - The keen rivalry that exists between the girls' soccer teams of Mt. Hope and South Kingstown has produced its share of memorable games over the past two seasons. Last fall, for example, the Huskies downed the Rebels for the Division I state title after having tied South in two regular-season games. Last night, at the Kickemuit Middle School field, the Huskies celebrated the start of the second half of their '97 schedule by posting a 2-1 victory over the Rebs. The two clubs played to a 1-1 tie earlier this season. Mt. Hope is now 7-1-2, South Kingstown 4-2-3. "We expected a tough game from them," said the Rebels' Tammy Borrelli, who accounted for her team's goal last night. "We didn't play too bad, but we wanted to win. They're more physical than we are." Mt. Hope, playing without injured frontline stopper Kerrie Richard, last night held off an aggressive South Kingstown attack in the second half. "Without Kerrie," Huskies head coach Doug Lanzire said, "we were limited in our substitutions. We had to take control of the midfield. I just thank God we won." Mt. Hope, which going into last night's game was tied with East Greenwich for the divisional lead, went ahead 3:15 into the game. That's when Allison Vales's corner kick was booted past South Kingstown goalie Sarah Stanhope by Huskies' senior Erika Saviano. South had a couple of good scoring opportunities. But direct kicks by Alesia Gray and Chelsea Wetherell went wide of the Mt. Hope net. Mt. Hope put up another goal about 18 minutes into the second half. Freshman Alexis Bouchard beat Stanhope on a pass from freshman Kate Paiva. But the always-dangerous Rebels, who spent much of the second half in the Mt. Hope zone, cut their deficit in half on Borrelli's second goal of the season. She took a corner pass from sophomore Lindsey Knapp at 21:00 and pushed it past Huskies goalie Carmen Medeiros. "We knew what we had to do," said Borrelli. "We always seem to play better in the second half. I felt I could've contributed more." "It was a well-played, well-executed game," said Jim Kelley, the Rebs' head coach. "I thought both teams played well." For the game, each squad took nine shots on goal. The Huskies' Medeiros - a sophomore - made eight stops in goal. Stanhope registered eight saves for South Kingstown. The Huskies enjoyed a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. Oct 02, 1997 (Game #10): Warwick Vets visit OMF ($0 admission; no programs.) South Kingstown continues to perplex, "surviving" to beat Warwick 2-1 It was another one of those games, an apparent mis-match with South dominating and yet it was anybody's game right up until the end. South must have one of the worst "chances to success" ratios in the league. Head Coach Jim Kelly continues to look for a true forward, checking the waiver wire and talking possible trade with both Westerly and Mount Hope. South had a ton of chances while their goalie never touched the ball until eight minutes into the second half. Yet, with the clock winding down, or is it "up" in soccer, every time a Warwick forward got half a step on their Rebel defender, the South fans were holding their collective breaths. Anything, even an America's Cup race would be more fun to watch than "this". South scored their first goal late in the first half when Kate Sikorski crossed a ball from the left side with Grace Dawson streaking towards the goal from the right. Grace got her right foot on the ball just as she was about to run out of goal, from about one yard out, and popped the ball into the left corner. In the second half, Lauren Testa came up the center of the field and made a perfect pass to Bethany Moore on the right. Bethany's defender opened up a small window for Bethany and she took advantage. She shot from about 25 yards out. The ball sailed over the outstretched hands of Tina Fogg, just under the crossbar, right in the middle. Perfect. About 10 minutes later, Warwick scored after a corner kick bounced around for awhile. From about three yards out, Karen Fandozzi scored. Every field-player got into the game for South. Some of the players looked a little hesitant in the second half in their new surroundings. Ellen Histen, Tammy Borrelli, Chelsea Wetherell, Christine King, Kaitlin Franco, Katie Dougan, Lindsay Knapp, Liz Horton, etc. all seemed to be in the thick of things at one time or another. Katie Dougan had a free kick that hit the crossbar late in the game. A second chance header by someone went high. Jess DeAngelis saw action foor the first time since the first week of the season. Alesia Gray went down in the first half and never returned. She was kicked in the ankle and went to the emergency room after the game. Bethany Moore also went down but seemed okay at the end. Starting for the Rebels, from right to left, were Sarah Stanhope, Dougan, Katie McBride, Testa, King, Julie Cantagallo, Gray, Borrelli, Wetherell, Histen, and Katie Parkinson.

Oct 07, 1997 (Game #11): Smithfield visits OMF ($0 admission; no programs.) South Kingstown clicks behind Sikorski, Histen and Parkinson - beats Smithfield 3-0 It was a good game. South was in control most of the game although, for awhile in the second half, it was a little like a tennis match, back and forth. That was fun to see as everyone got some action. Fun as long as Smithfield didn't score of course. Kate Sikorski had a great game for the Rebels. She opened the scoring four minutes in when she raced the goalie for a ball about 25 yards in front of the Smithfield goal and got a kick off just before the goalie got there, the kick making the right corner. Halfway through the second half, Ellen Histen managed to get by Elise Dionne about 35 yards out. Elise gave chase but was late as Ellen's shot went into the right corner. Ellen and Elsie had quite a few tug-of-wars during the game. On one run by Ellen, Elise went down twice, popping right up each time to continue the battle. With nine minutes left in the game, a foul by Smithfield gave Katie Dougan a free kick just outside the penalty box, straight on. The call seemed just a wee bit delayed, as if the ref was reacting to the fans. Katie then started a chain reaction that went just as the team had practiced the day before. Her kick hit the crossbar, bounced back for a header by Katie Parkinson which again hit the cross bar and then ricocheted between Grace Dawson and Katie-P (both standing at the left post) about a dozen times before Katie-P scored into the left corner. Or something like that. Sideliners were too dizzy to remember. A little earlier, Parkinson sent a line drive into the goalie that was way too hot to handle. Unfortunately, no one anticpated the rebound off her chest. Great job by the defense again, their fifth shutout of the season - Katie Dougan plus the back line of Jess DiNapoli, Lauren Testa, Katie McBride, and Gordie Howe, right up through the mid fielders and strikers. Leslie Cipriani showed a lot of hustle. Histen sent numerous lollipops across Smithfield's goal but South could never connect. Lindsay Knapp continued her impression of a human cannonball. Is it your imagination or do things seem to happen when Bethany Moore comes into the game? It was another slow day for the South Kingstown goalies, which of course is a "good news-bad news" situation. Sarah Stanhope and Caitlin Mullen could use some live practice. Liz "will she be in the doghouse when she comes back" Horton was on a vacation trip to California while Alesia Gray roamed the sidelines with a bad ankle. Starting for the Rebels, from right to left, were Stanhope, Dougan, McBride, Testa, DiNapoli, Julie Cantagallo, Chelsea Wetherell, Parkinson, Tammy Borrelli, Christine King and Sikorski.

Oct 09, 1997 (Game #12): Pilgrim visits OMF ($0 admission; no programs.) Pilgrim frustrates the Rebels for a 1-0 win In a rare afternoon home game because of an evening open house at South, Pilgrim stuck it to the Rebels. South had plenty of chances but it wasn't their day. It was Pilgrim's second shutout against South. Only one ref showed. Pilgrim scored early on a nice corner kick and a header into the right corner by Beth Caromile. South had many opportunities. Katie Dougan drove one off the Pilgrim goalie's chest but no one was there for the rebound. Later, a free kick by Katie got by the goalie as she just got a hand on it but no one was there again. Katie Parkinson beat the goalie to a ball but nothing. She also had a nice feed to Grace Dawson, whose header right in front of the goal went high. Lauren Testa had a nice feed to Tammy Borrelli but nothing again. There were many other close calls but never any points. It was a disappointing loss as the season winds down. Alesia Gray, injured, and Liz Horton, touring California schools, were missed. Jillian Tente and Bridgette Boynton were called up from the JV squad. Starting for the Rebels, from right to left, were Sarah Stanhope, Dougan, Katie McBride, Testa, Jess DiNapoli, Jess DeAngelis, Chelsea Wetherell, Parkinson, Borrelli, Christine King and Kate Sikorski.

Oct 14, 1997 (Game #13): North Kingstown visits OMF ($0 admission; no programs.) North Kingstown catches fire, ties South at 2-2 Down 2-0, North Kingstown caught fire in the second half, and tied South. If time hadn't run out, the outcome may have been different. They had South on the ropes. What did their coach say to them at half-time? Or was it the sight of their mascot, the Energizer Bunny, who arrived late, that did the trick. South got on the board 23 minutes in when Christine King, in the right place at the right time, snuck a loose ball around the left corner for a 1-0 lead. Seconds before the first half ended, Leslie Cipriani booted one into the right side from about 15 yards out. Nice work in the right corner by Chelsea Wetherell set up the score. In the second half, North looked like a team that had just gotten the news that their high school would never switch to block scheduling. They were so "up". Talk about momentum switching - did it ever! They were everywhere. Katie Dougan got called for tripping 11 minutes in and Chris Sipala drilled the penalty shot. Sarah Stanhope got a hand on it but couldn't stop it. Five minutes later; seven foot tall Sarah Tift scored on a header. The goalies had a rough night. In the first half, North's Alicia Merdinyan and Ellen Histen collided. Alicia lay on the ground in pain for about ten seconds while the ref waited for South to lose control of the ball. South couldn't thread the needle while Alicia was out of action. Alicia left momentarily and then returned. Sarah Stanhope took her licks including a kick to the ribs. At one time the goal was wide open but Katie McBride saved the moment when she booted the goal-bound-bouncing-ball away. Later, Katie went down with a bad ankle and had to leave the game. It was nice to see Alicia Gray back in action. Unfortunately, Jess DeAngelis had problems again and was unable to play. Jillian Tente saw her first varsity action of the year. Liz Horton sent a postcard from L.A. Starting for the Rebels, from left to right, were Stanhope, Dougan, McBride, Lauren Testa, Jess DiNapoli, Gray, Chelsea Wetherell, Parkinson, Borrelli, Histen and Kate Sikorski.

Oct 16, 1997 (Game #14): at East Greenwich ($0 admission; no programs.) East Greenwich swoops in under a low cloud cover to blast South Kingstown, 2-1 If John Denver were to take a stroll through the quiet woods of East Greenwich, he might decide to follow a trail that is known to the locals as "route 95". If, off to the west he saw a hawk circling in the sky, while, off to the east he saw a soccer ball, piloted by Major Chris Kane, about to take off on a "search and destroy" mission, he would have a tough decision on which to follow. Kane was on the front end of both East Greenwich goals. In the first half, Kane's corner kick was headed in by Ali Peake for a 1-0 lead. In the second half, Kane crossed from the right corner to Heather Ryan who booted in the game winner. In between, about 12 minutes into the first half, Katie Parkinson scored South's only goal, when she blasted one from the left, about 25 yards out, high into the right corner of the net. "Elvis" didn't have a chance. It was a good back and forth game. Possession time was not lop-sided. South could not penetrate East Greenwich's defense, anchored by Kerri Vetovis. Most of South's shots came from outside the box. That's okay when strong legged Katie-P makes an attempt but most of the other girls don't have the power and are just wasting a scoring opportunity. East's defense shut out the Rebels in the corner kick category, a rarity for South. Jess DiNapoli had a good opportunity but the ball went high from about 18 yards out. Katie Dougan set up some scoring chances late in the game but South came up empty. Chelsea Wetherell took a ball to the mouth while Parkinson seemed to get a nose-sting. Both stayed in the game. Kate McBride was sidelined on crutches with her bad ankle. Jess DeAngelis was again unable to play. Liz Horton was back, more in love with Rhode Island than ever before. Bridgette Boynton made her varsity debut. Starting for the Rebels, from left to right, were Sarah Stanhope, Dougan, Christine King, Lauren Testa, Jess DiNapoli, Alesia Gray, Parkinson, Wetherell, Tammy Borrelli, Ellen Histen and Kate Sikorski.

Oct 19, 1997 (Game #15): Barrington visits OMF ($0 admission; no programs.) Liz Horton's penalty kick salvages a tie for South It was a rare Sunday night game, a makeup of the original date when Coach Kelly had to leave town on business. Everyone was wondering if the coastal storm just to our south would hold off and it did. Barrington scored halfway through the first half when Carly Williamson, from about 25 yards out and on center, did a good job threading the needle, right into the right corner. South's goalie Sarah Stanhope had a hard time seeing the ball in the crowd of players in front of the goal. It looked like South was on the road to a disappointing loss just when they badly needed points, not only to get a home field advantage, but just to make the playoffs period. Then, if you will, a little luck - a penalty call in the box. A Rebel (Liz Horton or Katie Parkinson?) and a Barrington player collided in mid-air; was that the call? Katie Parkinson was going to take the shot but Liz Horton pleaded with Katie to let her take the shot. Liz was still feeling bad about missing a golden opportunity earlier when the Barrington goalie, Broomhead, had problems finding the handle and Liz, right in front of the goal, kicked the gift into the goalie's head, instead of the net. Time was called for a couple minutes while Broomhead righted herself. So Katie acquiesced and Liz put it into the right corner. Liz deserves a "big wet kiss" from all you SK fans. South dominated in the second half while the first half was fairly even. Katie Dougan had a few free kicks, some of them sooo close. Katie-P also had a number of chances but used a little too much toe as all the balls went high. There were a lot of changes in the Rebel's starting line-up and, during the game. Coach Kelly moved quite a few kids around. Alesia Gray played up front and outside for a while; Lauren Testa left the back line for mid-field; Horton saw some action up front versus her usual mid-field position. Jess DeAngelis has been injured. It's her hamstring. She has missed over half the season so far. Surprisingly, Ellen Histen, lately a starter, didn't see any action. (She also was absent for much of the second half of the EG game.) Starting for the Rebels, from right to left, were Stanhope, Dougan, Christine King, Kyla Sand, Jess DiNapoli, Testa, Chelsea Wetherell, Parkinson, Gray, Tammy Borrelli, and Grace Dawson.

Oct 21, 1997 (Game #16): Toll Gate visits OMF ($0 admission; no programs.) South 4, Toll Gate 2, in a wild and crazy one It was an unbelievable game, especially in the first half. Why can't they play these games on "paper"? Why Toll Gate after Barrington? Why do they have to put the fans through this? What did the other teams do - have we clinched a playoff spot yet? The final score could easily have been 10-2 with a little luck in this wild one that was also a fairly rough game, with a lot of pushing that resulted in a few warnings from the refs. South dominated, blasting away time and again only to look up at the scoreboard (what scoreboard) and find themselves down 2-1, deep into the first half. Toll Gate, to their credit, sure made the most of what few chances they had. Somehow, they broke through South's defense and scored twice. No cheapies either. Once from the left by Alyssa Jeschke and ten minutes later from the right by Vanessa Dipaola, a great shot. South had three corner kicks in the first three minutes. From the left corner, Alesia Gray passed to Liz Horton who passed to Chelsea Wetherell who drilled the right corner from about 12 yards out at 7:47 to put the Rebels up 1-0. After Toll Gate scored twice, Katie Parkinson came to the rescue with the tying and go-ahead goals. Katie-P's first goal came off a Katie Dougan free kick rebound from about ten yards out. A few minutes later, Bethany Moore started another scoring sequence with a pass to Borrelli, who bounced one off the crossbar, the ball then being headed in by Katie-P. Whew! Time ran out on the half a few seconds later, with South up, 3-2, at the half. The second half was all South. Their final score of the night was a beautiful feed from Borrelli, coming up the middle, to Christine King, just sort of biding her time over on the right wing. Chris took her time and lofted a very pretty shot, that goalie D'Angelo retreated on but didn't have the height as it sailed over her hands and into the net. Liz Horton came so close so often. One time, goalie D'Angelo couldn't hold on to the ball and it dribbled out, right in front of Liz, but Liz couldn't convert. Bethany Moore had a wide open shot but it went high. It was a great game by the defense. Dougan, Kyla Sand, Lauren Testa, and Jess DiNapoli. Jess often took her traps all the way to the front. Except for those two scores that "blew by" her, Sarah Stanhope had a quiet night. It was the last home game of the regular season and the five seniors were honored at half time. Katie Dougan, Chelsea Wetherell, Liz Horton, Tammy Borrelli, and Jess DeAngelis. The five were praised by Coach Kelly for, among other things, knowing "there's more to life than soccer", and for having the "joie de vivre". The other players presented ballons, flowers, a sport bra engraved with "Rebels" on the front and a "soccer ball" overlayed with their "number" on the back. Also, engraved key chains. Jenn Hodge presented T-shirts from a senior soccer tournament that none of the five ever showed up for. Starting for the Rebels, from right to left, were Stanhope, Dougan, Sand, Testa, DiNapoli, Borrelli, Horton, Parkinson, Gray, DeAngelis, and Wetherell.

Oct 23, 1997 (Game #17): at Westerly ($3 admission; no programs.) South flat; Westerly keeps their playoff hopes alive; Morgan Page is injured What a lousy game from South's perspective. Although Westerly carried the play in the first half, the Rebels had plenty of chances - Tammy Borrelli, Katie Parkinson, Christine King, Jess DiNapoli, and Julie Cantagallo, all had the fans on their feet with "close ones". In the second half, South dominated but couldn't pull the trigger, even on a couple occasions when Westerly's Carla Murano was either caught out of the goal or rolling on the ground. Coach Kelly made some defensive changes at the half which seemed to help. The last ten minutes were rather hectic when Katie Dougan and Lauren Testa were moved up front. Alesia Gray had four corner kicks in the last couple minutes but nothing seemed to work for the Rebels who saw their playoff's first round home-field advantage start to slip away. Morgan Page went down 16 minutes into the second half in a collision at mid-field. Coach Kelly carried Morgan on his back to the sideline where a Jeep picked her up to take her to the hospital. It was her left leg. Westerly scored deep into the first half when Morgan Page grabbed a loose ball and fed Jaime Guarino, up and to her right. Jaime Guarino had a step on her defender, and fired one into the left side of the net from about 13 yards out. Westerly could still be in the running for a playoff spot depending on what North and Pilgrim did. Tammy Borrelli went down but did return later. Katie McBride is still nursing her injury. Starting for the Rebels, from right to left, were Sarah Stanhope, Dougan, Kyla Sand, King, Testa, DiNapoli, Parkinson, Leslie Cipriani, Gray, Chelsea Wetherell, and Borrelli.

Oct 28, 1997 (Game #18): at Barrington ($3 admission; no programs. Plus a lottery - SCFun came close, had 5 of the 7 numbers.) South "ends" on a high note with a 2-0 victory over Barrington on Senior Night Taking a cue from the stock market, South Kingstown rebounded from a disappointing loss to Westerly with a 2-0 win over Barrington on Barrington's new lighted soccer complex. It was senior night for many, many seniors on the Barrington squad. It was a nice end to the regular season. The win meant South will play their first playoff game at home. It also meant that Barrington will take 2nd place behind East Greenwich in the league standings. Ellen Histen ignited the night for South. She constantly got by her defender to drive deep into Barrington's end. Late in the first half, one of her drives resulted in a corner kick. Alesia Gray lofted a soft one from the left corner that Katie Parkinson timed for a header from about four yards out. Again, late in the second half, Ellen was there when she got a nice feed from Liz Horton to score from about 15 yards out. The defense bent but never broke. Sarah Stanhope had a couple nice saves, including a high shot from the right that she was able to deflect up and over. Sweeper Katie Dougan and the back line of Jess DiNapoli, Lauren Testa, and Kyla Sand played tough. South had the usual near misses. Tammy Borrelli crossed to no one. Katie Parkinson came close on a low one to the right. Histen had a breakaway just as time ran out in the first half. Also, Borrelli, off a feed from Bethany Moore, hit the crossbar. Chelsea Wetherell's ball went wide right. Summur Shaikh collided with the Barrington goalie in a race for the ball that had an empty net waiting if Summur could have gotten there first. Kaitlin Franco launched one that went wide right by a yard. Julie Cantagallo, Jess DeAngelis, and Leslie Ciprianai all played well on a night that saw South playing with a skeleton crew. All the cross-overs were missing because of a JV game earlier in the evening.? Christine King was out sick but not from school. Katie McBride remained on the I.L. Always follow the bus home, parents. You never know when the bus might head off in the wrong direction and then decide to stop at McDonald's. [Why didn't Alesia get an assist on the first goal? Is there some rule on corner kicks that SCFun is not aware of? Ellen did "set things up".] Starting for the Rebels, from right to left, were Stanhope, Dougan, Sand, Testa, DiNapoli, Cantagallo, Parkinson, DeAngelis, Gray, Wetherell, and Borrelli.

Nov 02, 1997 (Game #P1): North Kingstown visits Old Mountain Field ($0 admission; no programs - Although a kind relative, perhaps a "soccer aunt", passed out programs for NK. That was nice.) Katie Parkinson is hot! ... hot! ... hot! Katie Parkinson is on a roll. South's leader in goals and total points for the second consecutive year, helped the Rebels secure a spot in the Final Four with another spectacular performance resulting in a 3-1 win over North Kingstown. She has scored the game winning goal in South Kingstown's last three wins. With heavy intermittent rains all day long, the game was in doubt. There was a heavy shower within two hours of game time. But by 6:00 pm, the rains had stopped and it was actually quite mild. Bob Cavanagh helped get the field in shape, especially the section that doubles as an infield. (Now, if he can only cut the shrubs along the fence at the corner of the high school, the ones that just about prevent two cars from passing by each other.) Katie-P got her first of two goals at the 14:58 mark when she snagged a free kick by Katie Dougan and, not rushing but taking that extra split second, turned and fired and scored into the left corner. North tied the game about fifteen minutes later when Ashley Poland blasted a low shot to the left that Sarah Stanhope dived and got a hand on but couldn't control. One to one, tie score, here we go again. But with just a couple minutes left in the half, Katie-P scored the eventual game winner. It was an amazing goal considering that two people were "on her", just a few yards in front of the goal. She swung once and then twice with no luck but on her third try, she was able to get it through everyone's legs and into the right corner. An incredible goal. Great effort. In the second half, South got an insurance goal when Alesia Gray, coming down the center of the field, fed a nice ball to Bethany Moore streaking down the right side. Bethany, who always makes the most of her minutes, got a step on her defender as Alicia Merdinyan rushed out in an attempt to beat Bethany to the ball. Bethany won the race but didn't have much of an angle but she took her best shot anyways, from about 18 yards out. Her shot just nicked the right post before caroming into the net, a nice billiard shot. South had other chances. Early on, Ellen Histen had a clear opening if she could turn and find a corner. Unfortunately she kicked it right to the goalie. Julie Cantagallo and Ellen had a two-on-one but couldn't convert. Chelsea Wetherell had a breakaway on the right but her shot from about 20 yards out went wide left. North also had its chances, especially on a couple headers. One was a nice feed from Chris Sipala to Linda Ferencko late in the second half that would have tied the score at two-all, but Linda's header went high. North had an incredible eight corner kicks, all in the second half. Because of those corner kicks, Sarah Stanhope had one of her busier nights. At times she found herself wrestling with a very slippery (literally and figuratively) ball. Sarah Tift and Jess DiNapoli (?) collided when they both went "up" for a ball. Sarah refused to go down on one knee, but had a wobble to her walk so coach Clark took her out. South's back line of Jess DiNapoli, Katie McBride, Lauren Testa, and Katie Dougan once again played a great game. Liz Horton, not feeling all that great, played well as did the ever dependable Tammy Borrelli. Katie McBride made her comeback, starting toward the front before quickly shifting places with Christine King in the back. Also seeing action for South were Leslie Cipriani, Kaitlin Franco, Kyla Sand, and Kate Sikorski. Starting for the Rebels, from right to left, were Stanhope, Dougan, King, Testa, DiNapoli, Parkinson, Gray, McBride, Horton, Wetherell, and Borrelli.

Nov 04, 1997 (Game #P2): South Kingstown vs East Greenwich, Pierce Stadium ($4 admission; with programs.) Katie Parkinson stars again! SCFun took the night off. Here's the article from the Journal which makes SCFun wish they hadn't taken the night off. If you take out the "filler" there aren't a lot of "memories" left. The "somebody" is Julie Cantagallo. Huskies, Rebels post 2-1 wins in semis EAST PROVIDENCE - South Kingstown and Mt. Hope knocked off top seeds last night and advanced to the Division I finals. South Kingstown, with two goals from sophomore Katie Parkinson, edged regular-season champion East Greenwich, 2-1, in the opener of the MetLife Soccer Classic. The Rebels and Huskies play for the state title Saturday at 6 p.m. In the opener, South got both goals from Parkinson, who grew up taking shots at her sister, former All-State goalkeeper, Shelly Parkinson. Shelly graduated last year, but Katie maintained the family tradition by helping the Rebels get into their 10th championship game. They have won four state titles, the last in 1988. The Rebels have been on a roll, after losing 1-0 to Westerly late in the season. They knocked Barrington out of first place with a 2-0 win on the final day of the season, then advanced to the semifinals with a 3-1 win over North Kingstown. Parkinson, who worked a lot of seasons shooting soccer balls at her sister in the family backyard, kept the Rebels on track with chip-shot goal at the 28-minute mark. Avengers sweeper Keri Vetovis had cut off South's Liz Horton in the middle, but Horton was able to get the ball to Parkinson on the wing. Parkinson lofted a shot just out of the reach of East Greenwich goaltender Casie Rhodes. "I wasn't aiming," Parkinson said. "The ball was there and I saw the net. It was like slow-motion. I was laying on the ground and saw the ball go in." Parkinson scored what turned out to be the game-winner with only seconds left in the half. After several players battled for the ball at the top of the penalty area, somebody headed it toward the goal, and Parkinson was right there to chip another one over Rhodes' head. The Avs, who had defeated and tied the Rebels during the regular season, were just outpl yed in the first half, getting only a couple of good shots at the SK goal, while the Rebels were pounding away at Rhodes. The Avs made it close when sweeper Kerri Vetovis rapped in a penalty shot at the 64-minute mark, but couldn't come with anything else. "We were nervous; we just didn't have it tonight," EG midfielder Christine Kane said. By BUD BARKER Journal-Bulletin Sports Writer Coming off the bench for South were Julie Cantagallo, Bethany Moore, and Ellen Histen. Nov 08, 1997 (Game #P3): South Kingstown vs Mt. Hope ($5 admission; with programs.) Borrelli and Histen lead South to State Championship South Kingstown did it. Seniors Katie Dougan, Tammy Borrelli, Liz Horton, Chelsea Wetherell go out on top. That's nice. Thank you all, the players, Coach Kelly, Coach Hodge, and especially the seniors. Last year both teams finished tied for first in the regular season. This year Mt. Hope and South followed East Greenwich and Barrington in the standings. Last year Mt. Hope beat South in the big one. This year South wrote a different ending. It was a strange season. The low spot was probably the loss to Westerly late in the year. The Rebels had only won one game in their last five to that point. They were just squeaking into the playoffs when earlier it looked like a sure thing. And first round home-field advantage seemed to be sliding away. But that disappointing loss would turn out to be their last loss of the season. In the regular season, South could only manage a two game winning streak (on two occasions). It took them 9 games to score 10 goals. In the three playoffs games plus the last win of the season over Barrington for home-field advantage, they won four straight while scoring 10 goals. For a team that had problems scoring early on in the year, 10 big goals in the last four games was an awesome effort. Also, the title game was only the second time this year that South managed to score three goals in a half. The Rebels picked a hell of a time to peak. Good job! Rebel's goalie Sarah Stanhope had some action. It was the first time, all season, that she had more saves than the other team. Ellen Histen was selected All-Tournament MVP. (Did she make the All-Tournament team as last year's co-MVP's did? Dumb question?) Here's ProJo's coverage ... Borrelli paces Rebels over Huskies EAST PROVIDENCE - Last night, South Kingstown found what it had been looking for all season - a goal-scorer. Senior Tammy Borrelli more than filled that role as the Rebels scored three goals in the first 14 minutes of the second half to beat defending champion Mt. Hope, 3-1, in the Division I championship game of the MetLife Soccer Classic at Pierce Stadium. "Tammy Borrelli, she did it," said South coach Jim Kelly, whose Rebels knocked off regular-season champion East Greenwich in the semifinals. "The team that should have been here, is here." Borrelli tied the match at 1-1 when she took a a header from Ellen Histen passed and beat past Mt. Hope goaltender Carmen Medeiros. The goal was set up by Chelsea Wetherell's throw-in. Histen put the Rebels in front with a spectacular goal nine minutes later. The South speedster, who splits playing time with forward Katie Parkinson, spun a Mt. Hope defender around in the far left corner, then raced along the end line and beat Medeiros with a shot into the far corner. One minute later, Borrelli let all the air out of the Huskies' balloon when she came barrelling down the left wing with a pass from Histen and unloaded a shot that found the top corner. Medeiros expressed the feelings of her teammates and the Mt. Hope fans at the 17th annual MetLife Classic. She knelt on the goal line, holding her head in her hands. "I had a gut feeling from the beginning of the season that we were going to make it," Borrelli said. In fact, Borrelli wrote a poem before the game to convince her teammates of her feelings. She read it to them on the bus ride from Wakefield. The poem said it was time to show everybody what the Rebels had. "Nobody thought we would be here, and we have proved everyone wrong," Borrelli said. Even at halftime, when South trailed, 1-0, and the team's mood was somber, Borrelli said the SK players vowed to come out believing in themselves in the second half. "We did and it happened," she said. "When we got that third goal, they lost their confidence and we got ours. I knew it was coming." Mt. Hope coach Doug Lanzire, coaching his last game before retiring, knew it was happening, too. "We just seemed to get deflated after that third goal," he said. "There weren't enough hungry people in front of the goal." The fire that scorched Barrington in the semifinals wasn't there, Lanzire said, though he didn't want to take anything awy from South Kingstown, which won its first state title since 1983. "South deserves the win; they were the better team," Lanzire said. There was no lack of fire from the Huskies' Kim Lanzire, their hustling power forward who put them in front at 26 minutes of the first half. Her goal, like Histen's took some fancy footwork. Lanzire was surrounded in the left corner when she danced around one, two, then three Rebels to unload a bullet at goaltender Sarah --------------------------------------------------------------------- "I had a gut feeling from the beginning of the season that we were going to make it. . . . Nobody thought we would be here, and we have proved everyone wrong." TAMMY BORRELLI, South Kingstown player --------------------------------------------------------------------- Stanhope from in close. Stanhope had no chance, the ball zipped into the far corner before she could react. Lanzire made Stanhope come up with several other good stops, before and after the Rebels' three-goal outburst. "We know Kim Lanzire is going to get one," Kelly said. But against a Kate Dougan-led defense that was among the best in the league this season, Kelly doubted there would be any more. Histen, the MVP of the tournament, had two assists in addition to her goal. Parkinson played another aggressive game after starring in the Rebels' semifinal win over East Greenwich last week. Both girls are sophomores. By BUD BARKER Journal-Bulletin Sports Writer Coming off the bench were Bethany Moore, Julie Cantagallo, and Katie McBride. Unfortunately, senior Jess DeAngelis was away on school business.
