Compliments of "Friends of SKHS Girls' Volleyball"

Despite some early season injuries and some losses, the kids are having fun. Meagan Arcand had mono, Jess Harvey had an injured right forearm. Courtney Johnson broke her right pinky. Narya Marcille became ill during the Mt. Pleasant game. They are going to peak just as the playoffs arrive. They definitely have a chance at the playoffs - 4/11/99. ... They are "in". - 5/19/99.

Toll Gate builds championship, block by block
By BUD BARKER
Journal Sports Writer

WARWICK -- North Kingstown had its prom Monday, but
Toll Gate was doing all the dancing in the CCRI
fieldhouse last night.
The Titans completed an unbeaten season with a gameplan
that worked to perfection. They shut down the
defending-champion Skippers in three straight games,
15-10, 15-11, 15-10 in Class A championship match in
the Providence Journal-sponsored Rhode Island Girls
Volleyball Tournament.
North, beaten by Toll Gate in three games in the first
match of the regular season, took the Titans to five
games the next time out. But the Skippers were no match
for a well-balanced Toll Gate attack last night.
Only twice in the three games did the Skippers have the
lead, and the leads were early and brief. They scored
first in game one and had a 2-1 lead in game two.
It wasn't an accident that the Titans were so dominant,
especially at the net where they drove the Skippers
nuts with great blocking and then more great blocking.
North coach Kengy Bell knew the blocking was coming.
``We tried to work on that. We talked about it,
practiced it, but we just didn't get it done,'' Bell
said.
Junior Caitlin Machon, given the Alice Sullivan Award
as the Most Valuable Player, got in Skippers' faces all
night, and was the Titan most responsible for slowing
down North's big hitters, especially the outside
drilling of Diane Dynon.
``Caitlin had the big assignment, blocking Dynon,''
Toll Gate coach Jim Roch said. ``She was a monster
blocker tonight, but we got strong contributions from
everybody.''
Machon said they had studied Dynon's style. ``We had
our back row set up to where she hits and our blocks
set up to cut off her angles,'' she said.
But if the Skippers weren't frustrated enough meeting a
Titan every time they went to the top of net, or
returning the tough serves in the Toll Gate rotation,
they kept hurting themselves with their own mistakes.
They committed numerous unforced errors and at one
point in game three they had five consecutive bad
serves. Both very uncharacteristic for a North team.
``We had so many errors and they didn't have any. They
served very well, their net play was tremendous, and
when things went bad, they never lost their momemtum,''
Bell said.
Machon and teammates Kristen Acciaioli, Linsay Ryan,
Holly Hummel and Casey Machon had been working on their
blocking and getting ready for Dynon and the Skippers.
Assistant coach Lori Baker, the blocking coach, was
pleased with the results.
``Blocking is a skill just as hitting, digging, setting
and serving is,' said Baker. ``We did some scouting and
we knew where certain (North) players hit. We knew if
we could shut the offense down, we wouldn't have a
problem at all.''
Baker, a star on Toll Gate teams in the late 1970s,
said she wasn't happy with the way the Titans blocked
against North in their second match of season, and knew
they had work to do.
``We worked hard at it, and our girls are good at it,''
Baker said.
Toll Gate wasted no time letting North know who was
boss last night. They banged and blocked their way to a
13-4 lead in the opener, and won it 15-10 on a Caitlin
Machon block. North closed to 11-12 in game two, but
the Skippers got rattled and surrendered three straight
points on errors in a 15-11 Toll Gate victory.
A double-block by the Machon sisters, Caitlin and
Casey, broke a 4-4 tie in game three, but the Skippers
weren't ready to throw in the towel. They tied it again
at 9-9.
However, North errors kept giving Toll Gate more
opportunities and they took advantage of them. A couple
of Hummel kills helpd the Titans to a 13-9 lead, and a
Caitlin Machon sideout spike gave her team another
possession.
It would be their last. A North player, as they had
done a lot last night, slammed the ball into the net,
giving Toll Gate its final point of the season.

Mar 24, 1999 (Match #NL2): Exeter/West Greenwich - home

South Kingstown is swept by Ex/WG in Injury Fund Match
South forgot how to serve in the first game. They got better
and were in the last two games, right to the end. Exeter/West
Greenwich had some great spikers.
Narya Marcille, from Seattle, is a welcome addition to the
Rebel roster. When Jess Harvey comes back from her injury (her
left arm is recovering from a bad cut), they should be fun to watch.
Starting: Danielle Marrinan, Amanda Nelson, Narya Marcille,
Meagan Arcand, Sarah Stanhope, and Emily Harbin. Subs: Justine
Henderson, and Courtney Johnson.
Game #1 - Too many bad serves. Nervous? Down 3-13, Narya
Marcille served three straight points before Ex/WG ran the rack
after a side-out. Talk it up, guys! - a few balls fell with no play
on them.
Game #2 - Danielle Marrinan had a nice kill for side-out
at 0-1. Sarah Stanhope then served three, one an ace, the
other two finished off by Meagan Arcand and Marcille
to put South up 3-1. At 5-6, Marcille served two to make it
7-6. At 8-8, Marrinan returned a well placed ball just inside
the back line for a side-out. Two rotations later, with Sarah
serving, the teams had their longest volley of the night. It went
on forever. Great job.
Marrinan and Emily Harbin both had soft scores to keep South
in the game during a scoring drought before Ex/WG prevailed.
  Game #3 - Ex/WG jumped out to a 8-0 lead before a softie by
Sarah and a side-out. Sarah then served two, with
Justine Henderson scoring at 2-8. Marcille later served
two to bring South to 4-8. The highlight of the night may have been
a great dig by Marcille from the back right. She got the
ball to Henderson in the middle front. The ball then bounced
over to Harbin at right front who got the ball over the net for
a great save.
Henderson later had three great serves to make it 7-11.
Sarah and Narya worked well together to gain a side-out
a couple rotations later. Amanda Nelson ran off four serves
to bring South within one, at 11-12. But then, Ex/WG scored the
last three points on the final rotation.

SK girls desire a winning year
SK's Sarah, #7, digs a ball

By KEN CASTRO (Narragansett Times)

SOUTH KINGSTOWN - Armed with a superb work ethic, the
South Kingston girls volleyball aims to make a mark in
the demanding A-South division this spring. That
competitive desire has been forged by coach Victoria
Tefft who hopes to rebound from a 3-13 season a year
ago.

Tefft looks to co-captains Sara Stanhope, and Jessica
Harvey for leadership that she hopes will translate to
wins and perhaps a spot in post season play. "Our goal
is to make the playoffs and to be among the top five
teams in our division," said Tefft. "Although these are
lofty goals, our hard work has certainly led us to
believe that we can accomplish them, " added Tefft.

Stanhope, a senior will be counted upon for her play in
the middle, while Harvey, a junior will be needed for
her skills as an outside hitter. Stanhope knows how to
win, as evidenced by her play on the 1998 state champion
girls soccer team, and should fill the role admirably.
Tefft was quick to praise both captains for their
quickness and athleticism.

Tefft labeled her team as "very young", and hopes to get
a boost out of Emily Harbin and Nariya Marcelle, who
were two-thirds of the frosh that started last season.
Coach Tefft sees both sophomores taking on expanded
roles with the team. Marcelle, a transfer from
Washington state, has been a student of the game since
the seventh grade.

Tefft cites junior Danielle Marrinian as someone with
"endless energy", and tremendous drive to go along with
a multitude of skills. Marrinian is an excellent outside
hitter, and coach Tefft feels that her athletic ability
allows her to play anywhere on the court.

Tefft also likes the abilities of outside hitter Megan
Arcand. "Megan has embraced the positive attitude that
is typical of this team," Tefft stated. Arcand along
with fellow juniors Justine Henderson, and Courtney
Johnson round out the core of coach Tefft's charges.

Tefft is looking foward to a campaign, that will test
her young squad. "Our team is very smart, extremely
positive, and constantly working hard. This should carry
us a long way," said coach Tefft.

Apr 01, 1999 (Match #01): Toll Gate - away

South Kingstown opens league play with a loss
Toll Gate was too much. They have a big squad, about sixteen
players. Half of them are nine feet tall. Was Meg Daniel on the
Toll Gate bench? She graduated last year. Is she an assistant?
Former Rebel Michelle Berker, who graduated last year, was in
the stands. She is going to URI this year and is doing well.
She hopes to be a professional student.
Jess Harvey came off the injured list to start. Welcome
back, Jess. Unfortunately, Meagan Arcand will be
out for a while due to mono. Good luck to Meagan; hurry
back.
Starting: Danielle Marrinan, Sarah Stanhope, Emily Harbin,
Jess Harvey, Justine Henderson, and Narya Marcille.
Subs: Amanda Nelson.
There are very few highlights. Too many unforced errors.
Sarah Stanhope served two of the four points, one
an ace. She also had a couple kills, one from the back row.
Danielle Marrinan and Emily Harbin served the other two
points.
Emily had some great digs. One in the first game
with Jess Harvey getting the next touch to send it
over the net. A little later, Narya Marcille assisted
Emily on her dig.
A black, rubber ball slowly rolled diagonally across the floor
at the Rebel end of the court in the first game. Luckily no
one got hurt.
Jess Harvey had a kill in the second game. Danielle
Marrinan had a nice softie for a kill in game three.
   South Kingstown 4 0 0 xx xx -- 0
   Toll Gate 15 15 15 xx xx -- 3

SK: Late into the third game, the players were still upbeat.
   TG: The fans were obnoxious.

Apr 05, 1999 (Match #02): Pilgrim - away

South Kingstown loses three to Pilgrim
South was in the first two games, the third got out of
hand. Game number two was weird - South players seemed to be out
of position half the time. Didn't Jess Harvey bypass her
first serve opportunity? Narya Marcille served twice in a row.
Starting: Danielle Marrinan, Narya Marcille, Sarah Stanhope,
Jess Harvey, Emily Harbin, and Justine Henderson.
Subs: Courtney Johnson and Amanda Nelson.
Game #1 - Danielle Marinnan got South out to a quick 2-0
advantage on her serves. Later, with South down 3-14, she served
three straight points, one of them an ace, to get South to 6-14.
Jess Harvey had a great dig and a kill. Narya had
some well placed hits. Sarah Stanhope had a couple saves
and a kill. There were about five straight side-outs before
Pilgrim got that 15th point. Jess Harvey and Amanda
Nelson served the other two points that are missing.
Game #2 - This was a confusing game. SCFun still doesn't
understand what happened with the serving rotation and the player
placement. Oh well. Emily Harbin served four straight to
put South up 4-1. Sarah then served three straight and
South was looking good, up 7-1. Unfortunately things quickly fell
apart.
Sarah had a kill a couple kills. Amada had a nice
dig/scoop to keep point-4 hopes alive. Danielle had a
kill for a sideout when she placed the ball just inside the far
corner. Courtney Johnson had some great returns and a
couple kills.
Game #3 - Only three points, served by Justine Henerson,
Emily Harbin, and Sarah. Narya had a great save and also
joined Sarah and Jess for some great front line defense
on South's point-2. Pilgrim had two long serving runs, one went
from 1-2 to 8-2 and the other from 10-3 to 15-3.
   South Kingstown 7 10 3 xx xx -- 0
   Pilgrim 15 15 15 xx xx -- 3

SK: SK Coaching staff didn't like the way the Pilgrim coach
treated the SK student ref in the second game.
PI: The Pilgrim fans were great.

Apr 07, 1999 (Match #03): Mt. Hope - away

South Kingstown wins their first match
Great job. Congratulations to Vicki, Ryan and the players.
Starting: Narya Marcille, Jess Harvey, Sarah Stanhope, Emily
Harbin, Justine Henderson, and Danielle Marrinan. Subs:
Courtney Johnson and Amanda Nelson.
Game #1 - Mt. Hope jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, before
a side-out on a Sarah Stanhope kill. Narya Marcille,
in the leadoff serving spot, then rattled off nine straight
points. Wow! Jess Harvey and Sarah had some key hits in that
run. Later in the match, South was called on a violation for
taking too much time before putting the ball in play. Emily
Harbin served at 9-6 and quickly went to 15. Narya had a
kill on point-11. Only four South players served in the game!
Game #2 - Danielle Marrinan continued the improved
serving. She got five points, the second an ace. Sarah
had a kill on point-3. Later, Danielle hit a winner to
get the ball back on a side-out at 5-5. Sarah then served
three points. Emily had a nice block on point-8. South
now up 8-5. Amanda Nelson served three for a 12-6 lead.
Jess had a kill on point-12.
Sarah had a kill on a side-out and then served two,
14-7. Emily served the game winning point on an ace.
Game #3 - Narya again had some great serves. She served
the first seven points, two of them aces. Sarah had a
kill on point-7 and after two rotations, also point-8.
Emily served two for 11-4. Jess Harvey found the far
corner on point-11. Justine Henderson served three for
14-5. Danielle had the game and match point serve.
   South Kingstown 15 15 15 xx xx -- 3
   Mt. Hope 6 7 5 xx xx -- 0

SK: A Narr Times reporter was there. Yet nothing would be in
Friday's paper. What was the point? The NTimes Sports
Section hasn't been the same since Mick left.
MH: They had those new crispy M&M's. The ones in the blue bag.

Apr 09, 1999 (Non League #03): Mt. Pleasant - home

South played great, but came up short
There were lots of personnel changes tonight. Four players
came up from the JV squad - Susannah Colt, Stacia DeGrass,
Alaina Duggan, and Stefanie Gallo,
Good news - Meagan Arcand is back after a brief illness.
Bad news - Jess Harvey was out sick. Courtney Johnson
broke her right pinky in practice and is out for a few weeks.
Narya Marcille left in the middle of game three, obviously
not feeling well. As a result, rookie Susannah saw plenty
of action. South played very well under adverse conditions.
Mt. Pleasant looked like a high school team visiting from Asia.
They were small except for a couple girls. They played very well.
They had few unforced errors. Good mechanics. The two tall girls
got cute on a number of occasions for soft kills.
Starting: Danielle Marrinan, Narya Marcille, Meagan Arcand,
Sarah Stanhope, Emily Harbin, and Justine Henderson.
Subs: Amanda Nelson, and Susannah Colt.
Game #1 - Emily Harbin (4 points), Justine Henderson
(3), and Narya Marcille (4) served well. Emily had the
game winning serve. Sarah Stanhope had some kills and a
save. Meagan Arcand, Justine and Danielle, also had some
kills for points or side-out. It was tied at 9-all before South
went up 14-10. They sided-out before getting the winner.
  Game #2 - No luck.
Game #3 - South was up 2-1 with Amanda Nelson serving
when Narya got sick. Too bad. Susannah Colt then
saw her first varsity action and played well. Amanda served
two points, one of them an ace. Sarah had a few kills as did
Justine after one very long rally.
Game #4 - Danielle served three of the four points.
Justine served the other one.
   Mt. Pleasant 10 15 15 14 xx -- 3
   South Kingstown 15 3 5 4 xx -- 1

MP: They seemed to enjoy themselves.
SK: Something was going on in the auditorium.

Apr 13, 1999 (Match #04): Warwick - home

South Kingstown loses an exciting match to Warwick
It was an exciting match. South looked good early but then
fell back on some bad habits - kills that are long or into the
net, serves that are wild. Some might say they beat themselves.
Their "mental" game needs some work but that is hard for kids
this age.
Narya Marcille was not 100% and only saw limited action.
If only she was 100%, the results may have been different.
She also had a fantastic save.
  Starting: Danielle Marrinan, Justine Henderson,
Jess Harvey, Emily Harbin, Sarah Stanhope, and Amanda Nelson.
Subs: Narya Marcille, Meagan Arcand, and Susannah Colt.
Game #1 - Susannah Colt, with the game tied 11-all,
served four straight for the victory. Great job. South jumped
out to a 6-0 lead. Sarah Stanhope served three of those,
one an ace. Meghan Arcand had a kill in that run. Jess
Harvey's kill was good for 7-0. There was one violation for
bring out of order.
Game #2 - South was up 11-7, thanks to four service points
by Justine Henderson, but couldn't hold on. Too bad.
This is the game in which Narya Marcille had a great
lunging save to her right and back. Sarah assisted to
get the ball back over. It all ended with Warwick's point
number 8 for 8-11. Jess had a kill for a sideout.
Game #3 - The team played poorly (unforced errors) but
came back from a 1-9 deficit to get to 7-9. Emily Harbin
served points 2 through 6. Sarah had a couple kills
and Danielle Marrinan had a softie in that five point
run. Danielle also had a great save late in the game.
Game #4 - Almost. Down 5-14, South scored four on Sarah's
serve and then two on Amanda Nelson's serve (11-14) before
Warwick got the 15th point.
   Warwick 11 15 15 15 xx -- 3
   South Kingstown 15 12 9 11 xx -- 1

WA: The big girl, #3, is a one-wowam wrecking crew. SCFun
remembers her from last year. She can spike flat-footed.
Is SCFun crazy or was that "one girl" catching the ball
everytime she set? - maybe both!
SK: Why did South start on the other side?

Apr 15, 1999 (Match #05): Coventry - away

  South Kingstown wins
South looked good. Narya Marcille appeared to be healthy.
There were only two girls on the bench. Stephanie Gallo
being one of them. Justine Henderson was ill and didn't
make the trip. Only one ref showed. The ref's ladder was
"see-through" which helped the fans' view.
Starting: Danielle Marrinan, Jess Harvey, Emily Harbin,
Meagan Arcand, Sarah Stanhope, and Narya Marcille.
Subs: Amanda Nelson.
Game #1 - Amanda Nelson had a great serving run. She
went to the line at 1-1 and served nine straight points, one
an ace, before Coventry finally got a sideout, South was up
10-1. Danielle Marrinan and Sarah Stanhope each had a
kill in that run. Emily Harbin later got South to 14-7
with two service points, one an ace. But Coventry hung in there
and it wasn't until Amanda rotated back to server, with
the score 14-11, that South got that 15th point.
Jess Harvey played well. She seems to be "thinking"
better and reducing her kills that end up going "out".
Game #2 - Narya Marcille, Sarah, Amanda, and Emily
all served well. On South's 13 point, it looked like Coventry
got away with four hits. It was a very long and exciting volley.
Luckily there was no harm done. Coventry had a lot of unforced
errors. Meagan Arcand had a great save.
Game #3 - South rotated incorrectly once again during this
game. Have they had a violation free match yet? Anyways, Coventry
looked like they might make things interesting. South was down
7-9 before they could get rolling. Sarah had a few kills,
one a softie. Emily also had a couple softies for kills.
   South Kingstown 15 15 15 xx xx -- 3
   Coventry 11 6 9 xx xx -- 0

SK: Meagan Arcand's grandfather, who lives in Coventry, was in
      the stands.
CO: Bleachers need a good scrubbing.

Apr 16, 1999 (Match #NL4): Prout - home

South Kingstown beats back a tough Prout
Prout was very good. Although South had 7-0 and 7-2 leads in
the first two games, Prout fought back to make things
interesting. Their #7, Bree Bessette, a junior, was very good.
She and Sarah Stanhope had a few confrontations at the
net. (Maybe South could trade their #7 for Prout's #7 - what do
you think?)
Danielle Marrinan had some feet problems and experimented
with different shoes.
SCFun, whose knees have been swollen ever since the family
night, filed a lawsuit today in Fourth Superior Court,
Providence. Named as co-defendants were Vicki Tefft, SK High
School, and the installer of the gym floor. See you in court.
Starting: Narya Marcille, Danielle Marrinan, Sarah Stanhope,
Emily Harbin, Amanda Nelson, and Jess Harvey.
Subs: Meagan Arcand and Stefanie Gallo.
Game #1 - Narya and Emily served well. Narya
seems to use the base of her hand instead of a full flat hand.
Hey, whatever works - don't fool with success. She might just
be the most consistent server on the team. Sarah, Jess,
and Meagan had some key kills in the first game.
Game #2 - The ref broke his whistle/cord in the middle of the
game and had to get a replacement. Narya and Sarah each had
a 5-point serving run. Sarah's run included a couple aces.
She also had a few kills. Narya is getting good with that
fake set. Meagan and Emily had some well placed winners.
Jess had a kill.
Game #3 - South had a rotation violation. Ya? - so! Emily
and Danielle had serving runs of 4 and 3 points respectively.
Jess, Sarah and Danielle had some key kills. Jess "the
hammer" Harvey, had the winning serve.
   Prout 12 9 6 xx xx -- 0
   South Kingstown 15 15 15 xx xx -- 3

PR: Where did all the Prout JV players go?
   SK: An early 5:00 start.

Apr 26, 1999 (Match #08): Toll Gate - home

South Kingstown loses three straight, but ...
Toll Gate easily won three straight last night but not as
easily as the last time when South managed only four points.
  South continues to improve.
Courtney Johnson's continues to get more and more good
hits.
Emily Harbin has just about eliminated her "double hit"
problem that plagued her early on. She has become Miss
Consistency.
Sarah Stanhope had a few nice blocks and kills in the
last two games.
Justine Henderson had an ace in game #2 and a couple
kills in game #3.
Narya Marcille continues to serve well. She had an ace
in game two. She always seems to have at least one spectacular
save or dig in every game.
Jess Harvey, potential plus, played well.
Amanda Nelson served well. She served four of the five
first game points.
The season is half over, even though South has yet to play
Middletown.
Danielle Marrinan has unfortunately left the team in
order to concentrate on her studies.
Where was Coach Vicki Tefft? Fans said she was in South
Carolina on school business.
Starting: Courtney Johnson, Emily Harbin, Sarah Stanhope,
Justine Henderson, Narya Marcille, and Jess Harvey.
Subs: Amanda Nelson.
   Toll Gate 15 15 15 xx xx -- 3
   South Kingstown 5 8 4 xx xx -- 0

TG: Lindsay Ryan will be playing VB at Assumption.
SK: Jason and Jeff Buck, names from the Little League past,
were in the stands for a reunion.

Apr 28, 1999 (Match #08): Middletown - home

South has an easy go of it
Coach Vicki Tefft was back. The team played well and
took three straight from Middletown.
Alaina Duggan got into her first varsity match. Susannah
Colt has an interesting serve. She gets right into it - no
deliberate set up. She has a fairly strong serve.
Courtney Johnson had a committment and was excused.
Starting: Amanda Nelson, Emily Harbin, Sarah Stanhope,
Justine Henderson, Narya Marcille, and Jess Harvey.
Subs: Meagan Arcand, Alaina Duggan and Susannah Colt.
Game #1 - Amanda Nelson got things going with a kill and
a sideout of Middletown's first serve. She later served six
straight points to put South up 11-3. Sarah Stanhope later
served four straight including the game winner. Jess Harvey
had a few strong kilss, most of them for side-outs. They replaced
the poor Middletown student ref halfway through the game when she
called the ball out and the ref called it in.
Game #2 - Down 1-2, Sarah Stanhope served five straight,
one an ace, to put South up 6-2. The birthday girl, Alaina
Duggan, who may have seen her first varsity action, also served
well. She scored four straight to give South a 13-3 lead. Emily
Harbin served the last two points. Jess Harvey again had
a couple kills.
Game #3 - Susannah Colt got South into the lead, 2-0, with
two hard serves. It was back and forth for awhile until Jess
had three straight serves for a 7-3 score, the last being an ace.
Narya Marcille served four straight, for a 12-4 lead. Sarah,
Jess, and Justine Henderson all had kills. Jess had a nice
dig or save.
   Middletown 4 4 6 xx xx -- 0
   South Kingstown 15 15 15 xx xx -- 3

   MH: .
SK: Alaina Duggan celebrated her 17th birthday. Stephen Cacciola
was on the bench for SK, helping with stats.

May 04, 1999 (Match #10): Pilgrim - home

  South takes a step backwards
It was not a good night for the Rebels. They looked out of
sync most of the night; too much indecision. A few offensive balls
by Pilgrim fell in while Rebel defensive players just looked at
each other. There were a lot of net violations and also a few
Rebel players were either called for or should have been called
for being over the line on their serve.
It didn't help that steady Emily Harbin rode the bench
because she missed practice the day before.
The good news is that some players got some varsity experience.
Cassie Guglielmetti played her first varsity game and
performed very well. Susannah Colt got some more quality
minutes.
Starting: Jess Harvey, Meagan Arcand, Narya Marcille,
Sarah Stanhope, Justine Henderson, and Amanda Nelson.
Subs: Cassie Guglielmetti, Courtney Johnson, Susannah Colt.
Game #1 - Narya Marcille had a few nice spikes, one
a softie. Cassie had a kill and a save. Sarah Stanhope
had a kill and also slid ten feet on her rear while trying to
back away from a ball going out. Amanda Nelson had an ace.
Jess Harvey served four of the six points.
Game #2 - Narya served two points. She also had a great
recovery on South's point 3. Sarah had a couple kills.
Jess had an ace, a kill, and one of the best saves seen
all season. Unfortunately, the point had already been won by
Pilgrim - the call, on a violation, came late and her great
save went for nothing.
Game #3 - Meagan Arcand served two points. Cassie
and Sarah had some kills. Sarah had a great save to
her right, going out of bounds. She ended up sprawled with her
feet over the first row of bleachers. And yes, South won the
sideout.
   Pilgrim 15 15 15 xx xx -- 3
   South Kingstown 6 3 4 xx xx -- 0

PI: Boy they left the gym quickly.
SK: Parking lot was full, there was a concert.

May 07, 1999 (Match #10): Mt. Hope - home

South Kingstown looks good, sweeps Mt. Hope
The players looked enthusiastic, fired-up. They probably wanted
to erase the previous game from their memory and everyone else's.
What previous game? Do you remember a previous game? They
played well.
  Courtney Johnson was absent.
Starting: Jess Harvey, Justine Henderson, Emily Harbin,
Sarah Stanhope, Meagan Arcand, and Narya Marcille. Subs:
Amanda Nelson.
Game #1 - Jess Harvey got the team going with six
straight service points. Narya Marcille also served six
points on two rotations.
Game #2 - This was an exciting game. Mt. Hope actually led by
7-6 midway through. Down 0-4, Justine Henderson served
three points for 3-4. Sarah Stanhope had a kill on
point-3.
Emily Harbin had a kill for a sideout, keeping the score
tied at 5-all. Down 6-7, Jess served three points, the
last, point-9, too hot to handle. Sarah had a kill on
point-7. Sarah and Justine had a nice double block to keep
point-8 going.
Then, up 9-7, Narya Marcille stepped to the service
line. She served four, for a 13-7 lead. Jess had a great
save on point-11. Emily had a kill on point-13.
A rotation later, after a sideout thanks to Justine's kill,
Justine served two for the 15-7 win, the winning point coming
off a kill by Sarah that just made it inside the back line.
Meagan Arcand played inspired ball.
Game #3 - Another good game. Sarah had a couple kills.
On point-14, it looked like she hit the net but got away with it.
She also had two nice saves on balls off the net.
Jess had some great kills. One, on a sideout at 5-3, was
spectacular. It's amazing the floor was not dented. (That guy
that sits in the stands with the meter, pencil, and pad - the guy
from URI - I wonder what the frequency reading was on that hit.)
Towards the end of the game, around 14-5, with the ball in the
Mt. Hope end, a whistle was blown for an SK violation. SCFun
missed it. Evidently, Meagan, when shifting, tripped over
Sarah's foot and fell into the net. South had to call
timeout to control the giggles. South eventually won on a nice
softie kill by Narya.
   Mt. Hope 9 7 6 xx xx -- 0
   South Kingstown 15 15 15 xx xx -- 3

MH: Narragansett Basketball Coach Bill Peppin was in the
stands. He gave the MH coach a hug after the game.
SK: Coach Vicki Tefft only dressed seven players for this
match. Ben Geaber had to eat his food outside the gym. Ken Castro
from the Narr Times assured SCFun that Dave is still the sports
editor at the Times, even though one never sees his by-line.
Mick used to write two or three stories per issue.

May 11, 1999 (Match #11): Warwick - away

  South in great comeback
Coach Vicki Tefft was pleased that her players, who
looked like they were ready to give up, didn't. They hung tough.
They looked to be on their last leg after two ho-hum games and
then being down, 1-5, in game three. But then something happened.
The big Mo started to shift. A slow trickle at first, the mo
eventually turned into raging water. It was great to see the
enthusiasm as the players started to realize that it's not
over 'till it's over.
Rosemary Daley's enthusiasm, from the front line as well
as from the bench, was a big plus.
Coach Tefft said they are "in" - the playoffs. If they
take the next few games one at a time, and not look ahead, they
also have a good chance to finish at .500 or above.
Courtney Johnson and Susannah Colt were absent.
Starting: Jess Harvey, Emily Harbin, Meagan Arcand, Sarah
Stanhope, Narya Marcille, and Justine Henderson. Subs:
Amanda Nelson, Rosemary Daley, and Cassie Guglielmetti.
Game #1 - There were lots of unforced errors by South - long
serves and kills much too wide. Sarah Stanhope and Emily
Harbin had a few kills after they were down 1-14. Emily
also served the last two points.
Game #2 - South was in the game for awhile. The Rebels were
down 3-6 when Warwick ran off seven unanswered points. Lots of
serves by Warwick were never returned - they weren't aces but
almost. The Rebel players just kept coming up a foot short as
they lunged for the sinking balls. In that run, it looked like
Sarah and Jess Harvey had a positional violation.
Game #3 - It seemed like it was going to be one of those short
nights, out of the gym within an hour. But it didn't happen.
Warwick never ran off more than two points in any given
rotation. Slowly, South chipped away at Warwick's early 5-1 lead
and slowly the momentum changed.
Jess Harvey had a kill for sideout at 1-3. A little later,
Amanda Nelson had a kill that found the far corner. Amanda
served two points for 4-5. Point-4 came off a kill by Rosemary
Daley. Jess had a kill for sideout at 5-6. Emily then
served two points for 7-6. Point-7 was a Narya Marcille
kill. The team started to play with a different intensity.
Warwick went ahead for the last time at 8-7 before a kill by
Narya for the sideout. It was 8-8 thanks to a ace by Justine
Henderson. She ran off three service points for 10-8.
Meagan Arcand had a kill on point-10.
Two more points by Warwick before Narya's slam and a
sideout. 10-all. Jess then served three with Sarah
having a couple kills. Narya then served point-14 which
ended with a Sarah kill before Warwick got a sideout. But
Sarah quickly shut the door on Warwick with another kill.
Still at 14-10, Amanda served and got the win. Great
comeback.
Game #4 - South was up 2-0 when Sarah served seven straight
for a 9-0 lead. Rosemary had a kill on point-3. The serve for
point-6 was misplayed a little by Warwick's star hitter, Erin
McGovern. The ball hit her in the head. The coach then took her
out for a rest - not sure if she was shaken up - she didn't
appear to be. After a sideout, South immediately got the ball
back with a sideout of their own on a nice combo save by Jess and
Sarah. Jess finished off the sideout with a kill. Justine
had an ace for a 10-1 lead. Jess's kill made it 11-1. Jess
later got it up to 13-2 with two service points. Warwick started
to creep back as four straight points made it 13-6, South. But
then Narya had a "TH-TH", a serve that was "too hot to handle".
Warwick had another chance but Sarah's kill for sideout and
then her kill again for point-15 brought South to the fifth game
for the first time this season.
Game #5 - Narya served well. She led off for the Rebels after
South got a sideout on Warwick's opening serve. She serve seven,
including a couple "TH-TH's". Sarah had a couple kills in that
run.
(South's serving really improved when it was needed. In this
game, there was only one serving rotation where they didn't
score. In game four there were two. In game #1, there were five.)
Warwick came back with three, the third being a liner that
would have been out by about 10 feet, but South didn't have time
to think, just react, and they tried to keep it in but hit it
wide. That was a tough one. Warwick eventually tied the score at
8-all. Then South had its finest hour, getting five straight
sideouts while scoring in four of the next five rotations.
Sarah served 9 & 10 for 10-8. The next sideout of
Warwick was one of the most exciting volleys all night as the
ball ended up in the net countless times by both sides only to
be recovered so play could go on. Very exciting. Emily
served 11 & 12, 12 being a "double TH". Justine served 13 & 14,
13 being another "TH-TH" while point-14 was a kill by Jess.
Warwick then got a sideout followed immediately by a South
sideout. Still 14-8, South.
Jess then served but Sarah's potential game
winner went into the net. She quickly made up for it with a kill
for a sideout. Narya then had the serve and she came through
with the sweetest ace, a ball that fell right in the middle of
Warwick's stunned defense.
   South Kingstown 4 3 15 15 15 -- 3
   Warwick 15 15 10 6 8 -- 2

SK: Sarah Stanhope was out of uniform - her shorts
were not regulation or standard issue. Therefor, Warwick is
appealing South's victory. At least they will when SCFun shows
them the video.
WA: Lauren Hathaway's father came in late. He's a teacher at
Warwick. Is he also a track coach?

May 13, 1999 (Match #13): Coventry - home

  South loses in photo-finish
What happened? Was South over confident after their great
comeback win less than 48 hours ago? They did beat Coventry the
last time. Was Coventry much improved - they did play well?
Regardless, it was a depressing loss.
South seemed to correct a lot of their problems by game #3 but
by then, it was too late.
Starting: Narya Marcille, Meagan Arcand, Sarah Stanhope,
Emily Harbin, Justine Henderson, and Jess Harvey. Subs:
Amanda Nelson, Rosemary Daley, and Cassie Guglielmetti.
Game #1 - The players had a very hard time returning Coventry's
serve. Down 5-12 and 8-13, South did well to fight back and tie
the game at 13-all and 14-all. Amanda Nelson had a great
diving save for a sideout at 13-14 to keep the rally going.
South had their chances late but didn't seem to want to take
advantage, judging by their bad serves. Only two rotations
produced more than one point, those being by Amanda and
Justine Henderson, for three points each.
Game #2 - South dug another hole for themselves, this time it
it was 2-10 before South rallied. Sarah Stanhope, who had
a few kills, also had four service points to get South within two
at 9-11. Rosemary Daley had a well placed corner kill for
point-9. Meagan Arcand also had a critical kill late in
the game to keep the rally going.
Coventry didn't make as many unforced errors as South. They
seemed to find a lot of holes on the floor for winning shots.
There were a lot of high passes by South that should have been
returned but that came down hitting the net, on the wrong side.
Game #3 - South scored on 67% of their serving rotations,
compared to 55% in game #1. Their focus seemed to return. The
mental game still seems very difficult for most high school
athletes. Jess Harvey had a 5-point service and Emily
Harbin a "three". Both had an ace. Jess also had some
big kills. Narya Marcille played well. She continues
to pass and serve well while occasionally sneaking in her
softie kill.
   Coventry 16 15 16 xx xx -- 3
   South Kingstown 14 11 14 xx xx -- 0

   CO: They played very well.
SK: Mrs. Arcand brought her video camera, perhaps expecting a
win? Is South still "in the playoffs"?

May 18, 1999 (Match #13): North Kingstown - home

South plays well at "senior night"
The Rebels played very well. The first game got a little out of
hand but the last two could have gone either way.
There was lots of enthusiasm, lots of fan participation,
especially in that wild third game. Did you think that "sideout
marathon" that they called the second game could be topped?
Let's hope they can control their emotions and beat
Middletown. Does someone have to lose for South to make the
playoffs? Anyone know?
It really was "senior (singular) night". Sarah Stanhope ,
who goes back with Coach Vicki to those Sunday afternoon
volleyball clinics around the 6th or 7th grade, played her last
home game. She played very well. Her return of serve (passing),
which is usually right on the mark, her blocking, her kills -
great game. She got her banner - every kid seemed to write a
chapter as opposed to a a couple sentences. Also a balloon, some
cookies, a VB key chain, a signed volleyball, flowers, a gift
certificate to a sporting good store, and a 1999 Toyota Rav 4 SUV
with automatic transmission. Unfortunately it is blue, not black.
You can't win them all.
Coach Vicki Tefft and Coach Ryan Drake got gift
certificates from the team in appreciation for their time and
help.
Has VB become like BB in that the refs don't call the "carry"
anymore? You don't mind if "your team" gets away with it but
they really should call it when the other team does it. Sarah
got away with it in basketball for years.
Starting: Narya Marcille, Meagan Arcand, Sarah Stanhope,
Emily Harbin, Justine Henderson, and Jess Harvey. Subs:
Amanda Nelson, Courtney Johnson. Starting lineup was the
same rotation as the last game. Why? That can't be!
Game #1 - North, which always plays well, just kept collecting
points. South played well, especially their returns. Down 1-7,
however, they did get a little sloppy and North took advantage
for a four-point rotation.
South's serving could have been better. They started off with a
fault and ended with a fault at 4-12. North then scored their
last three points.
Jess Harvey had a good kill on point-4 with great feed
from Sarah. It happened too fast to remember the details.
Game #2 - This was a sideout marathon. This game was 3-3 after
nine rotations whereas the first game was 4-11. Then North served
three points for a 6-3 lead. But Sarah followed that with
three. Point-4 was an ace. Her diving attempt to get a ball
luckily fell short and the ball was declared out, for point-5.
Then South got a case of the jitters or whatever ("you take it,
no you take it"; also hitting right into the net) and North
scored seven straight to go up 13-6.
Game #3 - Great game. North jumped out to a disappointing 7-0
lead. But Emily Harbin got south on the scoreboard with a
softie kill and slowly, South started to come back. Emily
later served four points, two of them aces, to get South to 7-8.
The crowd then really started to get into the game. South
hoping for the upset, North trying to avoid the upset.
At 7-9, Jess had the kill of the game. Back about 15
feet from the net, she slammed a winner right into that middle
hole. Justine Henderson then served three points for a 10-9
lead. Could South do it? No, but they sure gave it a great try.
From here on out, no one ever had more than a one point lead
until the final rotation when North served three for the win. This
followed a total of five consecutive sideouts by both teams. South
did have their chances but they just couldn't get that one last
elusive "winner".
Down the stretch, Sarah had a couple key kills and a
great block. Narya Marcille had a great save and served well.
Jess also had some good serves. Justine had a big kill.
   North Kingstown 15 15 17 xx xx -- 3
   South Kingstown 4 8 15 xx xx -- 0

NK: Good luck to North's seniors, especially, Diane Dynon.
Diane, played great in game #1 & #2 and entered game #3 when
South reached 14. She'll be playing VB at Merrimack College in
MA. Good luck to assistant coach, Wendy Romblad, in her job
search.
SK: Good luck to Sarah. She may or may not be playing "club
volleyball" at Clemson.

May 20, 1999 (Match #14): Middletown - away

South Kingstown wins the regular season finale
The regular season ended with an easy win over Middletown,
which has seen very few wins the past three years. It's now off
to the playoffs. All is well in Pleasantville.
South was slow getting in gear in that first game. Eventually
things started to roll and they had three fairly easy wins.
Middletown did not serve well and that helped. The Rebels won
game-3 on only six rotations.
Coach Tefft dressed 13 players, the most in SCFun's
memory. The starters played well despite the usual serving
glitches. They seem to be getting more of their kills in-bounds.
In the last two games, Vicki was able to rest some of the
starters and go to the bench.
Courtney Johnson was thrilled with her ace in game #2.
She followed that with another service point. Stacia DeGrass,
energy-plus, then came in and served up another point.
Amanda Nelson had a run of six service points to open
up game #3. Rosemary Daley had a big kill on point-2,
game #3.
Casie Guglielmetti set well in game #3 while giving the
reliable Narya Marcille a rest. Alaina Duggan,
played well when Emily "Steady Eddy" Harbin, took
a breather. Stefanie Gallo also had some quality minutes.
South will play their first playoff game against the 4th seed
in the North which is who?
Starting: Narya Marcille, Meagan Arcand, Sarah Stanhope,
Emily Harbin, Justine Henderson, and Jess Harvey. Subs:
Amanda Nelson, Courtney Johnson, Rosemary Daley, Stacia
DeGrass, Alaina Duggan, Stefanie Gallo, Cassie Guglielmetti.
   South Kingstown 15 15 15 xx xx -- 3
   Middletown 4 1 3 xx xx -- 3

SK: South ends at 6-8, same as two years ago, when they last
made the playoffs. They lost the first preliminary game to MSC
and Kayla Egan. As of today, with ProJo's standings not up to
date, it appears South could play any one of four different
teams. CCRI doesn't seem to come into play until the semis.
MI: Two seniors played their last game. They charged
admission. A few schools did last year but this may have been the
first one this year.

South sweeps Isles in season finale

By KEN CASTRO, Narragansett Times

MIDDLETOWN - South Kingstown used their entire bench in
crushing Middletown in their final regular season game
in girls volleyball Thursday night. The Rebels (6-8)
spoiled Senior Night for the Islanders in taking a sweep
by scores of 15-4, 15-1, 15-3. Coach Victoria Tefft
proclaimed that the Rebels are "ready, willing and able"
to begin the playoffs and are anxiously awaiting word on
their opening game opponent. Sloppy execution on both
sides of the net characterized play in the early going
of game one until South reeled off 10 successive points
to take a commanding 12-2 lead. Emily Harbin and Sarah
Stanhope stripped the Middletown back court of it's
defense by forcing them to scramble throughout the game
and opening up the middle for a number of soft kills.
While Middletown's service line was in disarray, South's
was quite the opposite as they accounted for four aces
in accumulating the last five points of the game.

"I thought we played really well today with great
consistency, considering their (Middletown)
inconsistency," Tefft said. "We started off cold but
recovered, " added Tefft.

Tefft is satisfied that her team will enter the post
season with more than one style of play to draw upon,
"We've been working on some our outside setting in
practice. We've been using the middle so much that my
setters have been getting lazy and not taking the ball
outside, " said Tefft.

South was able to dictate their style of play in the
second game as the Islanders offered little resistance
to the quick moving Rebels. After going up 8-1, Tefft
began to blend in her substitutes, and South never
missed a beat. Courtney Johnson, Cassie Guglielmetti,
and Stacia DeGrass had some well placed service play and
soon the Islanders found themselves on the short end of
a 15-1 rout. The third game was much of the same for the
Islanders as the quick Rebels took control with a 7-2
lead. Harbin and Stanhope led the early surge with some
stunning kills. Stanhope tallied eight kills for the
evening. When Middletown did try to mount a surge late
in game three, they were forced to battle a formidable
Rebel front that turned back any scoring chances.
Throughout the night South was able to exploit the
Islanders from the service line, and the end of game
three was no exception as Jessica Harvey looped a
picture perfect ace to make it 14-3.

Stanhope finished off the Islanders with a blast down
the middle for the final point of the game.

Tefft was happy with the Rebel effort that took only 57
minutes to complete, "Our defense was good, we moved
well on the court and our serving was consistent," she
said.

Looking ahead, Tefft offered, "We are going to have to
work real hard to get past the first round, but that's
our goal, get into the quaterfinals, and go from there."

May 27, 1999 (Match #P01): Ponaganset - away

  South exits the playoffs early
It was a very disappointing loss, although some players seemed
to recover very quickly. How do they do that?
South had a great first game but then proceeded to shoot
themselves in the foot time and time again in the next three
games. Ponaganset played very well, making few mistakes. They
simply waited for the win to come to them.
Ponaganset served well. Very few "nets" or "outs". They didn't
have that many winners. They didn't have to. Ponaganset had some
great runs; game #2 (6 and 5), game #3 (5), game #4 (7).
In the first game, South scored on 8 of their 11 rotations.
Then their ratio went down to 3/7, 3/8, and 3/8. Ugh! They did
look better rescuing balls off the net than they did earlier in
the season.
Those unforced errors ... serves long or into the net,
carries, potential kills blasted long, confusion or indecision,
violations, and worst of all, passes to players who weren't
"there".
It didn't help that at 4-5 in game #3, Jess Harvey
twisted her right ankle. Ryan Drake set her up with a bag of
ice and she rested for the rest of game #3. Narya Marcille, an
excellent setter, turned into a hitter for the rest of the game.
Jess did come back for game #4.
Sarah Stanhope played her last volleyball game and her last
anything game for South Kingstown. She had some great, hard
serves, five for points in the first game. Emily Harbin also
had five in the first. She also had some great net battles.
Hopefully Coach Vicki will get most of the girls back
next year. Thanks to those JV players who supported the varsity
on this long road trip.
Starting: Jess Harvey, Narya Marcille, Justine Henderson,
Sarah Stanhope, Emily Harbin and Amanda Nelson. Subs:
Courtney Johnson, Rosemary Daley, Stacia DeGrass, Susannah
Colt, Alaina Duggan, Meagan Arcand, Cassie Guglielmetti.
   South Kingstown 15 3 5 4 xx -- 1
   Ponaganset 11 15 15 15 xx -- 3

SK: Many of the usual parents couldn't make the early time.
Michelle Berker and her sister attended.
PO: Coach got upset when the ref tried to explain some
things to the people at the scorer's table. There were four
refs working the game or two refs and two linesmen. They never
rotate.

History

The 1999 season lasted 79 days, from tryouts to the last game.
The 1998 season lasted 73 days, from tryouts to the last game.

The 1998 season was a somewhat disappointing season. The Rebels
missed the playoffs by one spot in the standings with a 4-10
record. Seniors were Rebecca Bell, Renee Bell, Lindsey Johnson,
and Michelle Berker. It was a sad season with Michelle injured in
a terrible auto accident three games in. It was great to see her,
still recovering, at "senior night" on May 21st.
