From Narragansett Times On-line Edition ... September 12, 2002 EAST GREENWICH - With strong winds serving as a backdrop, the girls cross country season kicked off with a five race card, Wednesday afternoon at Goddard Park. With a significant number of last season's top harriers moving into the college ranks, those eager to make a name for themselves and their teams rolled out their first performances of the 2002 campaign in three varsity races, a "rookie" race and a JV encounter. Brittany Desilets (10th) and Kelsie Stricklin (11th) led the Rebels to a team title in the rookie race, a competition for first time harriers. Senior Kasey Cote of Coventry nabbed the Sullivan (Varsity I) race with a time of 20:17 over the 3.1-mile course. Rebecca Anderson of Chariho garnered the fourth spot with a time of 20:59. Anderson remained in the front bunch throughout the race despite having to deal with remnants of a coastal storm that made matters difficult for most runners particularly on the sandy portion of the course. "I really liked the course," said Anderson, a senior. "The wind didn't really bother me though. Last season I wasn't able to finish the state meet so this year I'm hoping this will be my year." North Kingstown easily won the team title over Ponaganset in the second varsity race by bunching four runners in the top five places. Junior Nicole Lombardi of North Providence took the individual win in 19:52.6, but the Skippers rolled in Jamie Sullivan, Shannon Leary, Stephanie Kolling and Leah Sullivan, all under 21 minutes to settle matters. South Kingstown unveiled their young squad as well on Wednesday. South sophomore Brittany Wright led a Rebel trio that hit the line among the top 20 positions. Wright, who competes at the 800, 1,500 and 3,000 meter disciplines during the outdoor season stopped the clock in 22:29, good for 17th. Teammates Colleen Kelley (18th) and sophomore Naomi Vinbury (19th) followed. "It was rough out there. I usually like the hills but the flats were better today" said Wright in reference to the windy conditions. "I tried to stay strong and I had the help of Colleen and Naomi in the pack. It was awesome to finish as a team." Wright who placed in the top 20 at the state freshman championships in 2001 said that her goal was to lower her times to return to the post season championships once again in November. Hilary Bodell and Stephanie Lord rounded out the next two scoring slots for the Rebels. East Greenwich's Nicole Millette won the race in 18:37

Karen Johnson and "Baker" show
A nice day for a run. Before the race, there was a small ceremony to
remember the tragedy of Sep 11, 2001.
Karen Johnson and her husband and her new baby showed up. He is Joseph
Baker, born on Aug 23, 2002. They call him Baker.
There are so many new faces on the team. SCFun hopes to add to the list
of finishers after the video is reviewed.
Alex Packer did well in his XC debut finishing second for SK.
Did you see Hendricken cheat in the woods? They like the "short-cut".
Maybe that's accepted - SCFun doesn't know for sure - much the way an
illegal pitch is accepted in baseball, at least by the particpants.
A few kids got back sweat-shirts, bowls, socks, etc. left over from the
pasta party.

Sep 10, 2002 (Match #M03): Middletown/Prout/Ports -
St. Georges
Freshmen Mari Woodford and Justin Stuadnick impress
Nice day. Beautful school, nice view of the ocean and the
surfers. Most of the St. Georges teams were out practicing.
The girls all look like clones of each other.
Mari Woodford won the girls' race. And, yes, she is the younger
sister of former great SK XC runner, Rosie Woodford, who is
currently running for Brown. It appeared to be a photo finish
between three girls from SCFun's vantage point. Along with Woodford,
Naomi Vinbury from SK and Kneeland from Portsmouth were "right there"
at the finish. Great way to start your high school running career
for Mari.
Colleen Kelley led the SK pack down the hill but on the return,
it was Woodford and Vinbury in the lead pack. Freshman Katie Davis
did well for her first race, grabbing 5th. Brittany Wright finished
sixth. Rachel Fagan dropped out due to stomach problems.
Three wins for the girls.
In the boys race, Colin Murphy was in the lead pack down the hill
but, once again, it was a freshman fighting for the lead on the
return. Justin Stadnick ran an excellent race to place 2nd overall.
David Stanhope and Zack Smith flipped a coin to see who would
get 6th and David won, bettering his time from two years ago by 20
seconds. Alex Packer finished 10th.
Portsmouth beat SK 25-30, otherwise it would have been a perfect
day for the Rebels. Portsmouth and SK dominated the top-ten.
ProJo mixed up the results but corrected themselves the following
day. SCFun doesn't understand Middletown's "0" score. Did they
forfeit?

North Kingstown is overpowering
Eric Lonergan sets a record for the boys and the first eight finishers
in the girls' race are all North Kingstown runners. George Steinbrenner
must also be the athletic director at NK.
Colleen Kelley and Brittany Wright led the South Girls. Katie Davis
didn't run; still dehydrated. Molly Little was still feeling the effects
of strept (sp?) throat and some lingering arthritic problems. Katie Antosh
also was sidelined. The girls ran well but NK was just too strong.
Veteran Colin Murphy led the boys but was almost a minute back of the
winner, Eric, who set a course record. Zack Smith, David Stanhope, Alex
Packer, and Justin Stadnick all finished within eight seconds of each
other. David bettered last year's time by 13 seconds. Kirby Mays brought
up the rear. Brett Lehrman didn't run due to shin splints.

Sep 30, 2002 (Match #M05): Chariho/Narr - Home
Boys and girls win two on Senior Day
It was surprising to see the URI President at the meet. His step-son,
Sam Pittle, runs for SK. Mr. O'Brien from South County Movers was on
hand. Avery Vannoy, who has retired as the Chariho girls' coach was
also there.
It was a nice day. Seniors were introduced. Alex Packer, Mike Higgins,
Mike Antosh, Tighe Flately David Stanhope, Greg Black, and Colin Murphy.
For the girls, there were only two. Stasia Marsh and Kelsie Strickland.
The course has changed some from last year. Especially the finish, which
is about 100 yards further into the field.
Justin Stadnick won for the boys. The top five for the boys finished in
the top eight. David Stanhope ran the same exact time as he did in last
year's home meet.
For the girls, there were lots of gaps. Becky Anderson was way out in
front. Then a group of SK girls led by Mari Woodford. Then another long
gap.
SKHS Cross Country coverage in the South County Independent has been
minimal. SCI did have a picture of Justin this week but it was the wrong
picture - it was Alex Packer.
SK alums Ryan Murphy and Chris Wright attended.

Narragansett Times by Ken Castro, 10/03/02 SOUTH KINGSTOWN - Justin Shadnick led South Kingstown to a double win in their only home meet of the cross-country season Monday afternoon at Curtis Corner. And witnessing his performance over the less than hospitable course will lead one to conclude that there are many more victories to come in Shadnick's burgeoning running future. "He's very talented," said Rebel coach Jim Champion, eyeing his athlete set the pace in the first mile of the race against Chariho and Narragansett. "Of course he's still learning but that will come in time." South Kingstown topped the Chargers 18-45 and overcame Narragansett 16-45 in securing the win. The Mariners got an uplifting win over Chariho as well by a 26-31 score. Shadnick, along with Colin Murphy, Zach Smith, Dave Stanhope, Alex Packer and Cory Egan led a South surge to the head of the 35 competitor strong pack through the first 1,000 meters. Despite an attempt to shake him on various sections of the course, Chariho's Geoff Davies remained within contact of Shadnick and Smith, who had by mile-two, slipped away, essentially in control of their fate. Stanhope and Murphy, led the chasers some 45 meters in arrears as his two teammates rolled within sight of the finish line on the open grassy portion of the course. With the win assured, Shadnick closed quickly over the final 200 meters, clocking a time of 1827. Smith hit the line in 18:47 while Davies was three ticks over the 19 minute mark. Shadnick admitted to feeling comfortable with the topography and it's lung searing nuances, something that most competitors did not enjoy for the most part. "I really like the course here, I think it's easier than some of the others," Shadnick said, his opinion backed by the manner in which he split up the rest of the field. The Mariners put a pair of underclassmen of their own into the mix in their win over the Chargers. Sophomore Eric Lovejoy worked his way into the top ten with a sixth place finish, clocking a 19:52 and freshman Chad O'Brien placed eighth in 20:12. Paul Bernardi (11th), Ed Crellin (12th) and Steve Winter (27th) rounded out the Mariner efforts. "This is probably our best team in ten years," said Mariner coach Sara Qwan, whose crew garnered their third win of the season. Qwan is optimistic that her team can tack on a few more victories to that total as they have yet to face a number of the lower seeded teams in the Southern Division. SOUTH KINGSTOWN - Rebecca Anderson's one person parade over the cross-country course at Curtis Corner might not have been the most impressive performance of the day in a double-dual meet with South Kingstown and Narragansett, Monday afternoon Despite a gun-to-finish victory by the Chariho senior, post-race laurels could easily belong to a young South Kingstown team that ran with the methodical precision of a highly experienced club. The Rebels won by a 20-43 score over Chariho and achieved a 15-50 triumph over Narragansett. The Chargers scored a 23-32 win over the Mariners as well. Anderson, one of the state's leading harriers bolted out and was never seriously challenged on the difficult, rolling landscape. At the two-mile mark she had an ever-expanding lead that registered nearly one minute. While Anderson was churning to victory, a quartet of Rebels consisting of Mary Woodford, Brittany Wright, Colleen Kelley and Naomi Vinbury were packed tightly together at the front of the lead bunch. With little more than a mile to go, a number of top ten hopefuls had slid out of contention, providing a huge scoring block to the Rebels, assuring them of not only a dual victory but also a seasonal record of 6-1. Wright and Vinbury are both sophomores. Team victory aside, gaining the acumen to run tactically as a team may be the most promising benefit that has taken hold among the quick-learning Rebels. "We have a nice pack there; they really work well together." said South coach Sherry Hathaway. As for the rate of improvement yet to be penciled in, Hathaway believes that the best is yet to be had. "I think that we're going to show a lot of improvement throughout the season because they are a young team and anytime you're young experience is everything," said Hathaway. "I think once they get used to running and get to know what a mile tempo should be, they'll move along much faster than most teams. We're looking forward to it. It's really an exciting team to coach because you can see their sense of confidence growing from week to week." For Narragansett, Anna Toyama came home as the top finisher but perhaps the most significant achievement of the afternoon for the Mariners came in the form of the team result. "This is the first time that the Narragansett girls' have scored any points at a (dual) meet since I've been coaching," smiled Mariner coach Sara Qwan. "It's a very exciting day for them." Narragansett got the job done by finishing all five of their entered athletes. Chariho coach Scott Fortune said that the difficulty of the course played havoc with runners times throughout the day and that even Anderson who navigated the final 2.5 miles in solo fashion, would not experience one of her season's best outings. Fortune also hopes that his team can mimic South Kingstown in their tactical approach in the near future. "We're hoping that it (consistency) really comes together at the class meet," he stated. A stern test for the Rebels will arrive next week when they face both Coventry and Westerly, two of the division's more potent teams. "Next week will be tough," said Hathaway. "We're just going to go into it with a positive attitude and see what we can do against them. Hopefully we'll pack our runners up front again."

Oct 08, 2002 (Match #M06): Westerly, Coventry - Goddard
Westerly boys and girls are good and deep
It was a gorgeous day to run. It seemed like a very late start.
About 4:20p. Not sure what the delay was.
There was no coverage of the girls' race in ProJo. Speaking of
newspapers - does the South County Independent even know that
South Kingstown has a cross country team? Why is it so difficult
to print the results? Hopefully the Narragansett Times is a little
better.
[Correction - 10/14/02: SCFun assumed SK Girls beat Coventry but
today's standings in ProJo indicate otherwise.]
Samatha "Honey" Gawrych won easily for Westerly. SCFun is guessing on
her name, going by the results of other Westerly meets. Her mother
was on the course, cheering her "Honey" on.
Brittany Wright led the way for South. Colleen Kelley and Mari
Woodford made the top ten.
Dan Sieczkiewicz, much like his female counterpart, won by about
200 yards. South Justin Stadnick was jus nipped for second place
by Dan Springer. Springers brother Josh got fourth.
One of South's runners got lost out on the course. Two kind
gentlemen, out for a run, escorted him back to base camp.
David Stanhope bettered his time from two weeks earlier by
36 seconds. Michael Raiche rejoined the team and ran his first
meet of the year.

Oct 17, 2002 (Match #M07): East Bay Challenge - Portsmouth
South does well at East Bay
It was a beautiful day for a run. It's too bad those big yellow school buses can't
park somewhere else so spectators can see from one side of the course to the other.
SCFun saw Mr Castro from the Narragansett Times and asked him to please give Kevin
Ryder, from the South County Independent, "hell" for his paper's lack of coverage
on the two teams. Supposedly Kevin doesn't like to come to the cross country meets.
[Update: It is not true that Kevin doesn't like to come to cross country meets.
"Kevin tries to make it to one meet a season."]
Some teams seemed to arrive late. Of course, the traffic on that island is never
good.
A few kids missed the SK Bus - Tighe Flatly and Mike Antosh. Mike did get a ride
from his parents. And some kids forgot things, like their spikes. It's a hilly
course so spike are nice to have.
Sam Pittle didn't run because of shin splints.
Only seven runners were allowed to run in the varsity division. All the other runners,
boys and girls, ran after the two varsity races.
Justin Stadnick took a wrong turn near the end, by the white corral fence. He probably
lost at least one place by doing that.
Supposedly, Hendricken sent their "B" Team.
The girls also ran well with Mari Woodford leading the way. Brittany Wright appeared
to be struggling somewhat with an unusual offday.
The starter's pistol miss-fired about three times bfore the start of the girls' race.

Wednesday, Oct 23, 2002 ... from Narragansett Times Where's Castro's Article? It wasn't posted on line! PORTSMOUTH - North Kingstown

Oct 27, 2002 (Match #M08): Class Meet - Goddard Stadnick and Woodford lead SK The meet was cancelled yesterday due to heavy rains. Even the URI football game against Richmond was stopped after the first half with the second half played today. There were some big puddles along the usual course. Some runners avoided them while some runners chose to run right through them. The Boys and Girls both finished 4th. The JV Boys got 6th place. It looked like the JV Girls did not have many runners, perhaps not even five. This meet qualified the boys' team for the state meet. SCFun assumes the girls had already qualified. [To qualify for states ... Top three from regular season dual meets. Or top two teams from Class Meet, after eliminating teams that are already qualified.] Justin Stadnick again ran well for South. He has proven to be SK's best bet this year. Colin Murphy, Zak Smith, David Stanhope, and Alex Packer followed. SCFun is guessing that Cory Egan and John McDermott rounded out the "seven". David Stanhope PR'ed the course with either a 17:47 OR 17:48 for 28th place. Mari Woodford led the girls. Colleen Kelley, Brittany Wright, Naomi Vinbury, and Molly Little finished in that order for SK. One of the SK Varsity runners appeared to have gotten lost and reappeared just as the bus was about to leave. What happens out there? Westerly's Samatha Gawyrch lost by two seconds in the Class C Girls. Why isn't Westerly in Class A with their size and talent? Chris Wright showed up to cheer on his former teammates and his sister. 10/28/2002 BY BOB LEDDY, Special to the Journal >Cross-country: Walsh, Millette are fastest in Class meet Hendricken's Steve Walsh clocks 15 minutes, 44.1 seconds in winning the boys' Class A race, and Nicole Millette of East Greenwich is timed in 17:57.6 in capturing the girls' Class C event. WARWICK -- Hendricken senior Steve Walsh and East Greenwich's Nicole Millette yesterday logged the fastest times over 3.1 mostly level miles at the six-race Class Championships at Goodard State Park. Walsh clocked 15 minutes, 44.1 seconds in winning the boys' Class A race, while Millette, a senior, was timed in 17:57.6 in capturing the girls' Class C event. North Kingstown, Westerly and Ponaganset took girls team honors in classes A, B and C, respectively. Hendricken's 25 points were good for team gold in Class A, while a strong Barrington squad took Class B honors. Portsmouth won the boys' C title. In the boys' Class B run, Eagles freshman star Tom Webb again proved his long-distance mettle by cruising to a winning time of 16:13.5. Patriots junior Tom Barek's 17:20.0 won the Class C boys' race. Cumberland All-Stater Hilary Dionne clocked 18:39.9 in handily winning the girls' Class A 3.1-miler. In the tight Class B race, Lincoln senior Liz Carlson went 18:22.0 to victory. Walsh turned in a 4:52 mile split, and hit the two-mile checkpoint in 10:06. "I felt tired [before the race began]," said Walsh, who battled for the lead with teammate Dave Murphy (second, 15:56) and Cumberland's Neil Hamel (third, 15:58). The girls' B race was a cliffhanger as Carlson outkicked Westerly freshman Samantha Gawrych in the final 200 meters. Gawrych clocked 18:24 for second. Eagles sophomore Audrey Hawkins came in third in 19:11. Toll Gate went 4-5, with Becky Hopkins (19:25) and Carolyn Yates (19:26) finishing, respectively. Millette was nearly three minutes ahead of her nearest competitor in the Class C event. Yesterday's races were a final tune-up for next Sunday's State Championships at Bryant College.

Oct 29, 2002 (Match #M09): Freshmen's - Goddard Kate Davis and Justin Stadnick run well at Freshmen's SCFun wasn't there but ... Looks like Justin Stadnick ran well. SCFun is surprised that a varsity runner could run as a freshman but, obviously, he can. Kate Davis ran well for the girls. Looks like South didn't have enough runners to even post a team score. But that's not surprising after seeing how few runners South had in the JV Race two days earlier at the Class Meet. Nov 03, 2002 (Match #M10): States - Bryant Colin, Justin, and Mari do their thing The weather was fine. It was a little breezy during the boys' race but then the wind died down just before the girls' race and it was actually comfortable, if you were standing in the sun. It was a big sports day with the NYC Marathon being run earlier in the day. Everyone at Bryant had their VCR running to catch the one hour that the TV Networks now give the running fans of America. There was a women's soccer game (not Bryant but league championship) which appeared to share the National Anthem with the start of the cross country meet. The Bryant football team was also practicing behind the soccer stands. Many alumni were on hand. See "Rebel Notes" below for more on that cast of characters. It was fun to see the local national and world class runners from the old days - Bobby Doyle, Tom Grundy, Ken Skelly, Charlie Breagy, etc. Everyone but Roland Davide, who did so well in the '80 U.S. Olympic Trials. But enough of this sentimetal reminiscing ... The course included that gravel road where the Patriots practice. Last year the course avoided the gravel and stayed in the grass. SCFun assumes the hills were the same as usual. The boys ran first and qualified for the New Englands in Portland, Maine, which just happens to be the hometown of three of the SCFun Sports' Staff - How 'bout that! Hendicken won, of course. You have to hand it to Hendricken. For being the smallest town in the state, they still manage, year after year, to turn out quality runners. What's in the water there in Hendricken, RI? SK's Colin Murphy and Justin Stadnick were neck and neck coming up that last rise before the final stretch down and into the finish line. Colin evidently had an extra gear and pulled out the top spot for SK. Zack Smith followed for SK. Jon McDermott (his agent, Patrick Bodell was in attendance) upset David Stanhope for the usual SK fourth spot. Jon had to be pleased with his great run. After David came Alex Packer. Mike Smith, who filled in for Cory Egan, followed as the seventh runner. Cory twisted his ankle in the Class Meet last week and was unable to run. Mike was "happy" with his time. Colin had a 17:40, a PR for the Bryant Course, He "felt good". He looked good. Justin, who was 24th overall, said it was "hard, lots of hills". Zack felt "horrible" and, like many, didn't like the hills. Zack worked late last night but his lack of sleep didn't show. David had one of his worst runs. Felt exhausted. Perhaps too much rest the previous week. He has been nursing a bad achilles with rest, medication, and also electrical (band-aid, wire, etc.) massage/stimulation. Alex called it a "tough course". He doesn't like hills but still, he was happy with his time. The boys would later celebrate at a local pizza shop. A pizza shop with a rude waitress. Mari Woodford led the girls with Colleen Kelley about 25 yards behind her. Unfortunately, the girls did not make the New Englands. Brittany Desilets had the best "Go South" sweatshirt. Katie Faella was hair dresser for the day. Bob Cavanagh and Joyce Harvey came but not, to many's disappointment, the beloved Karen Johnson, the previous boys' coach. She wasn't able to make it. Next year, Sherry Hathaway, bowing to pressure from the parents, says she will institute the first annual Parents' Cross Country Run after the annual home meet. Get ready Mr. and Mrs. Parent. Congratulations to both teams for a great season and thanks to the coaches, Mr. Champion and Ms. Hathaway. The Narragansett Times was there so there may be a story later. 22 - Colin Murphy, 17:41 35 - Mari Woodford, 21:48 24 - Justin Stadnick, 17:43 41 - Colleen Kelley, 22:02 41 - Zack Smith, 18;11 56 - Molly Little, 22:29 55 - Jon McDermott, 18:34 57 - Naomi Vinbury, 22:30 74 - David Stanhope, 18:53 59 - Brittany Wright, 22:31 85 - Alex Packer, 19:03 85 - Kate Davis, 23:29 104 - Mike Smith, 19:26 121 - Katelyn Moretti, 24:54
Narragansett Times, KEN CASTRO, Nov 07, 2002 Rebels qualify for New Englands SMITHFIELD - Green and white warm-ups painted a portrait of success on the podium at the State Cross Country Championships on Sunday. The artists behind the brush were a collective group of talented runners known as the Bishop Hendricken Hawks. On a cool, crisp day with a warming sun to match, Hendricken pushed five of the first seven finishers through the chute at the conclusion of the 3.1 mile circuit at Bryant College. For their monstrous efforts, the Hawks were rewarded with a 58 point margin of victory over second place Cumberland. The champions recorded 23 points. South Kingstown worked their way into sixth place on the basis of their 205 points. As a result, the Rebel season will be extended somewhat to prepare for the New England Championships at Portland, Maine next Saturday. The Rebels placing was initiated by senior Colin Murphy who hit the line in 22nd place, freshman Justin Stadnick, close back at 24th and junior Zach Smith (41st). Freshman Jonathan McDermott finished 55th. "That was a nice surprise," said South Kingstown coach Jim Champion after watching his first year harrier. "This season has turned out better than I imagined. In the beginning of the year we wanted to go to states but after the first couple of meets we weren't sure if we were headed there because we were using the season to get into shape.," said Champion. "Our kids kept getting better and better. We only came in fourth in the division, fourth in the class meet but the teams in front of us in both cases were all very good teams. So we fulfilled our goals to get here as a team and now we have a shot at New England's. If you told me that we were even close to going to New England's (earlier), I would have said , no way". The Chariho duo of Geoff Davies and Corey Mott, finished 35th and 86th respectively. Ed Crellin was then lone finisher for Narragansett, placing 92nd. South's Murphy and Stadnick were mid-pack at about 1,000 meters and just as they had done all season long in dual meets, stayed in close proximity of each other for the duration of the run. Back on the flats and into the final 800, Murphy powered past the Clipper senior and closed quickly on the line. Murphy slipped past Rebel teammate Stadnick as well in the latter portion of the race. Murphy's strong finish nearly netted him a third team All-State spot. Places 15 thru 21 were rewarded with such honors. "Everybody knows that this is the course down the road," offered Champion. "I don't think that anyone looks forward to the course itself but they look forward to going to Bryant because that's where the states are. It's a very challenging course. There are no secrets. They have the big hill and the rolling woods. Our team had some good practices on the hills and I think that helped us out in the long run here." BY CAROLYN THORNTON, Providence Journal Sports Writer Cross-country: Murphy's return paces Hendricken SMITHFIELD -- Not a stress fracture, not shin splints, not even a bout with bronchitis could prevent David Murphy from closing out his high school career with a state title. The Bishop Hendricken senior overcame all of those things this season and captured the individual boys title with a time of 16 minutes, 22 seconds at yesterday's R.I. Interscholastic League State Championships, contested on a hilly Bryant College course. Indeed, it was a successful afternoon for the entire Hendricken squad, as the Hawks placed five runners among the top seven, en route to their third straight state team title. "All things considered, it's a remarkable comeback for him," coach Jim Doyle said of Murphy. "Hopefully this will be the driving force for next weekend at New England's." After suffering a stress fracture in his left foot during the summer, Murphy developed shin splints in his right leg as a result of favoring his injured foot. Then, just when all of that had cleared up, he came down with bronchitis, which set him back yet another couple of weeks. "You've just got to focus," said Murphy. "You can't let past performances or anything affect your races because when I came back, I wasn't running well either. It took a while to get back into the swing of things. But once you do, you remember where you were and you're like, 'Oh yeah, I can do it again.' " In what Doyle called "the ultimate sacrifice," Murphy's teammate, Stephen Walsh set a blistering pace yesterday, covering the first mile of the 5,000-meter course in 4:35. By going out fast and perhaps risking burnout himself, Walsh hoped to tire the other runners early, which would help set up a strong team finish for Hendricken. Cumberland front-runner Neil Hamel stayed close on his heels, with Murphy trailing them. Still 13 seconds behind Hamel and Walsh at the two-mile mark, Murphy made his move along what many have nicknamed the "Green Monster," a long, steep half-mile stretch that brings the runners out of the woods and back up to Bryant's athletic complex. "In the woods, I kept eye contact with them but didn't really see them until the two-mile mark and then right above the hill, I just felt great," said Murphy. "I saw Neil take Steve, and I decided to go for it there. At that point, it was just go as quick as possible and not even think." Hamel maintained his lead on Walsh, finishing second in 16:36. "That's where I wanted to start moving, out of the woods, up the hill. And I did and I held it pretty strong. I was happy about that," said Hamel, who helped the Clippers to second place with 81 points. "But Murphy's just an unbelievable runner. He's been working at this for so long. I'm happy for him because he got injured beginning of the season, and to come back and do this is unbelievable. I wanted to win, no doubt. Who doesn't? But I'll take (second)." In what is believed to be the highest finish by a freshman in many years, Barrington's Tom Webb capped off an outstanding rookie season by edging Walsh by a tenth of a second at the line to finish third in 16:44. After Walsh, Hendricken grabbed the next three spots -- Adam Moitoso (fifth in 16:46), Daniel Carvalho (sixth in 16:47), Andrew Woodman (seventh in 16:56) -- in securing their fifth state crown in six years. Placing five runners in the top seven "is more than I ever could have possibly dreamed for today," said Doyle. "I haven't had a team do that since in 1988 when I coached St. Ray's and the Butler twins. That's a tremendous team accomplishment." Cumberland coach Tom Kenwood -- chosen by his peers to receive the Larry Gallogly Award as the boys' cross country coach of the year -- also received strong performances from Andrew Speroni (11th in 17:15), Mark Kenwood (17th in 17:35), Andrew Coleman (25th in 17:48), Jason Nadeau (26th in 17:52) and James Sullivan (53rd in 18:33). "This is all I've ever wanted," said Millette, who bettered the time set last year by Lindsay Vieira by 55 seconds and shattered her own personal best on this course by one minute, nine seconds. "All I ever wanted to do is win the last year. I just wanted to end the last year with a blast." Millette, runner-up at this meet last fall, took command of yesterday's race from the starting gun. She already had a good lead by the time she looped around the softball, baseball and soccer fields and headed back past the tennis courts to the lower campus. "I was just going out hoping to lead the race the entire way because my dad gave me a whole bunch of hints about running hard in the woods," said Millette. Completely alone as she emerged from the woods, Millette still looked fresh as she ascended the last challenging hill at the 2 1/2-mile mark. "Usually I feel the big hill at the end, but I didn't feel it," she said. "I was relaxed the entire run and I just felt good at the end. I just held my form." In an exciting race for second, Lincoln's Liz Carlson outkicked Westerly freshman Sam Gawrych over the last 100 meters, finishing ahead of her in 19:09. "She was right there the whole time," said Carlson, who earned her fourth straight top-five finish at this meet. "She's a good runner, and I knew I couldn't lose her on the hills, so I was waiting for the finish. Coming around the last loop, I was going to pick it up, but she was right there. And I knew if I spent it all now, she was going to get me at the end, so I just waited." Meanwhile, North Kingstown successfully defended its team title, compiling 82 points. Sisters Jamie and Leah Sullivan led the Skippers to their third straight crown, finishing 13th (20:26.1) and 18th (20:43), respectively. Also contributing with back-to-back finishes were Shannon Leary (21st in 20:59), Stephanie Kolling (22nd in 20:59.1), Kristen Ohanian (23rd in 21:01) and Jade Nannig (24th in 21:06). "Looking on at about 200 meters in, I was a little afraid because they didn't get out as fast they wanted to," said North Kingstown coach Keven O'Neil, honored yesterday with the Larry Gallogly Award as the Girls' Coach of the Year. "They were a little scattered throughout the race and I couldn't pick them all out. But by the mile mark, they were all together. They all ran extremely hard, packing it in together, and that's what they need to do to win." Gawrych paced Westerly to second place with 124 points. Rebecca Hopkins (fifth in 19:53) and Carolyn Yates (10th in 20:09) led Toll Gate to third place with 148 points, while Barrington sophomore Audrey Hawkins' fourth-place finish (19:46) helped the Eagles to a fourth-place showing among the teams with 161 points. Hilary Dionne, Class A champion last weekend, followed North Providence's Nicole Lombardi (sixth in 19:54) across the line to round out the top seven and help Cumberland to fifth with 168 points. Nov 09, 2002 (Match #M12): N.E.'s - Portland, ME SK Boys finish xth The bus call was for 5:00a in back of the high school. Do you believe it ... 5:00a? For some crazy reason the bus driver either has no sense of direction or doesn't believe in road maps because, when she left the high school, she headed off in the direction of Westerly. So, when the bus should have been going over the Piscataqua River into Kittery, Maine, it was passing the exit for T.F. Green Airport, still on its way to Providence. The bus was a big disappointment. The kids understood they were getting a "nice" bus. They didn't get a nice bus. (It's not important to understand why there was a mix-up - don't go there!) The bus was a step up from a school bus. Many of the kids had taken videos to play on the bus' video system so they were not happy. A few members of the team went to support the starting seven - Patrick Bodell, Mike Higgins, Shawn Meehan, Morello. Alex Packer stayed home in order to participate in the Model United Nations program. The kids were each given $20 for meal money, compliments of the SK Booster's Club. Thank you. After making a pit stop at the Kennebunk Service Stop on the Maine Turnpike, the kids reached Riverside Golf Course on what would turn out to be an unusually warm New England day with temperatures in the low 60's. The course was very hilly, with some hills being very steep. This course is a favroite of the locals for sliding (not sledding) and tobogganing in the winter. It made the Bryant Course look like a sandbox. There was a false start. SK got hell even though it was the team next to them that false started. Justin Stadnick, a shoe-in for Rookie of the Year, led the "sfab seven". That's a silent "s" in "sfab". Zack Smith, who improves with every meet, got second. Colin Murphy went ot a little too fast and then appeared to fade as he earned spot three. Jon McDermott was fourth, followed by the still "less than 100%" David Stanhope, who had some members of his fan club present. Then came Mike Smith and Cory Egan. A John Deere tractor was used for the pace vehicle. There were some rough spots on the course from earlier rains in the week. One runner was knocked to the ground by a four foot high post. Cameras were set up at the finish in order to break any ties. There were also bar codes and much scanning. On the way home, the bus stopped at a Friendly's in NH. Charlotte Bender stopped by to root for her classmates after a college visit to UNH earlier in the day. It's weird, but Maine does not send "teams" to the New Englands. Politics, money, and the fact that other sports will then want to go to "their New Englands" all factor into that decision by the big wigs - a decision that does not sit well with most of the Maine Cross Country coaches. Maine's Deering High did qualify five individuals so they had a team by default. Also, at the same time this meet was being run, it seems like half of Wakefield was competing in the Ironman Triathlon in Pensacola, Florida. Eric Winn, Gary Carter to name a couple. Hope to update later when complete results are posted on New England Sports [Nov 14th - Results have been posted. See Below.]

Maine athletes give it a run
Not even the motorized cart that led more than 400 boys and girls around Riverside Golf Course
at the 68th New England cross country championships Saturday could stay ahead of Ahmed Haji.
At least, not on a steep and muddy hill two miles into the 3.1-mile course.
As the cart slowed and strained up the incline, Haji, a junior at Conard High in West Hartford,
CT, galloped ahead and away from Ben True, the Maine Class B champion from Greely High in
Cumberland.
Never again threatened, Haji ran to a 14-second victory over True, who by two miles had felt
like hopping aboard that lead vehicle.
“When I hit that second mile, my whole side cramped up,” said True, also a junior, who had not
lost a cross country race in Maine in two years. “Then my legs seized up and I slowed to a crawl.
I didn't think I was going to finish.” True managed to hang on to second place, in 15 minutes,
30 seconds to Haji's winning 15:16.
“I like running hills,” said Haji, who came to Connecticut from Somalia four years ago and
finished 14th on a flatter New England course last year. “I can push myself more.”
South Portland sophomore Eric Giddings, who led the pack a mile into the race and was running on
fumes at the end, somehow outkicked a pair of fresher-looking runners to grab fourth among 234 boys
from five New England states, in 15:45.
“What an athlete,” said South Portland Coach Paul Brogan, tears of pride glistening in his eyes.
“He's just got a tremendous heart.”
Giddings, who never before had broken 16 minutes at this distance, said he knew by the roars in
the final straightaway there were runners on his heels.
“I knew I was going to get either fourth or eighth,” he said. “I started using my arms more.
I've been lifting weights and that really helps.”
Joining True and Giddings among the top 15 were Levi Miller of Belfast in seventh (15:53) and
Brandon Bonsey of Falmouth in 13th (16:01).
On a balmy, overcast day so unlike the past two suffering Saturdays - driving rain soaked the
regionals and frigid wind chapped the states - runners needed to be concerned only with spongy
turf and occasional patches of mud.
In the girls' race, Catherine Bryson of Hanover, N.H., won a finishing sprint with the two-time
defending champion, Meghan Owen of Killingly, CT, to win by a little more than two seconds in 17:57.
At a course intersection in the first mile, Owen yelled and pointed to correct two leaders from a
wrong turn.
“I know if I had been in that position, I'd want somebody to do the same for me,” said Owen, who said
her gesture drained nothing from her kick.
“I'm a little disappointed because I've won it two times before, but she had a good race. She deserved
it.”
Bryson, the daughter of the author Bill Bryson (“A Walk in the Woods”), lost to Owen by 10 seconds
at an invitational meet earlier this season.
The top Maine finisher was Erin Archard of Mt. Blue of Farmington, who surged past a Vermont runner
and into sixth place moments before crossing the line in 18:35. Last week in the Class A meet, Archard
also finished sixth.
Concord, N.H., won the girls' team title for the second time in three years by placing five runners in
the top 45 among those competing for teams, and beating runner-up Wilton, CT, by 36 points.
Bishop Hendricken of Warwick, RI, with five [?] runners in the top 33, won the boys' team title by 20
points over Londonderry, NH.

Remember a Dougan or Duggan that ran for SK-Boys about 1980 give or take a few days? - Where is he now?
11/03/02 ... There were lots of SK Alumni attending the State Meet at Bryant. Lindsay Crouse was there. Without any prompting, she volunteered that Harvard is fun and easy, a "piece of cake" ;-). She also runs XC for Harvard. The Bouchard sisters, Allison Little, Rosie Woodford, and Meredith Crocker were there. By the way, Meredith, got tripped up in her run for Brown on Friday when someone clipped her heels - otherwise she would have beaten Rosie - and that's the truth. Marilyn Woodford, the Wrights, Mike and Chris, Brian Wendell, and Ryan Murphy. Who else? Oh yeah, more Woodfords - they were even up in the trees, although this one (a she) was not an alum but will be a member of the SK Cross Country team in about five years.
11/01/02 ... Senior Rosie Woodford, 1st Brown finisher (18th overall) at 2002 Heptagonal Championships in NY. Meredith was 2nd for Brown. See picture at SCPics.
10/31/02 ... Erica Sweitzer (URI '04, SKHS '00) is running XC for URI.
10/11/02 ... Sophomore Meredith Crocker, leads Brown at New Englands with 17th place. Senior Rosie Woodford is Brown's second runner across the finish line. See SCPics.
09/30/02 ... Chris Wright and Ryan Murphy visit during the senior meet.
09/12/02 ... Retired Coach Karen Johnson showed at Goddard Park with her husband. She brought her new baby. Joseph Baker, almost seven pounds at birth on Aug 23, 2002.
09/24/01 ... Senior meet. Ryan Murphy stopped by. So did Aimee Bouchard and Katie O'Leary, both now at URI. Katie transferred from Delaware. 09/17/01 ... Ryan Lynch, Class of 2000, visited.
