Sep 11, 2000 (Match #M03): Middletown/Coventry - St. George's
South Kingstown Boys and Girls open with two wins
It was a beautiful day at St. George's. The boys went first and
had a bunch of runners up front at the first turn. At the second
turn, the first five were all SK - Mike Wright, Ryan Murphy, Jon
Stokes, Jon Egan and Chris Wright.
They held those spots as they headed down the hill. After running
the back 40, Mike Wright came up the hill with a 100 yard lead and
cruised in for the win. Tom Hazard from Coventry came on strong for
second place. Jon Egan and Ryan Murphy sprinted for second with Ryan
beating Jon by two seconds.
In the girls' race. Meredith Crocker was first at all check points.
She had a 50 second lead going down the hill. When she returned,
the second place girl was no where to be seen, even after Meredith
came up onto the plateau and turned the corner for the home stretch
and finished, still no second place girl in sight.
Lindsay Crouse finished 2nd and Shannon McIntyre did well nabbing
5th place. Marilyn Woodford, who was up with the leaders in the
early going withdrew because of breathing problems. Courtney Adham
had problems with painful shin splints.
It looks like there's been some realignment. East Greenwich has
moved from Southern to Surburban. What about Prout? They seem to
have a Boys team - girls?

Rebels sweep two
MIDDLETOWN -- Everyone knows the South Kingstown girls' cross country team will have to be
reckoned with this season. After all, coach Sherry Hathaway's Rebels are defending state
champions, and have their big guns -- including senior Meredith Crocker -- back for
another season.
But the surprise of yesterday's Southern Division season-opener at sylvan St. George's
School was the performance turned by the girls from Coventry.
The Oakers, led by senior Angela Murgia's third-place finish (21:32), were seven points
behind the Rebels in dual scoring between the two teams. At the Injury Fund Relay Carnival
last week, the Oakers finished only four points behind South Kingstown in team scoring.
Individually among the girls, the day belonged to Crocker. The Rebels' senior and
defending state titlist ran a 5:40 mile split on the hilly 3.1-mile route, and was well
ahead of the field the entire race. Crocker's winning time of 19 minutes, 18 seconds was
nearly 2 minutes in front of the second-placer, teammate Lindsey Crouse.
In girls' team scoring, the Rebels defeated the Islanders, 15-49, and Coventry won over
Middletown, 17-42.
Coventry girls' head coach Clem Soscia has a squad of 43. All-Stater Murgia, the Oakers'
top runner finished 10th at the State Meet last year in Newport.
On the boys' side yesterday, South defeated Coventry, 19-43, and Middletown, 15-50.
Senior Mike Wright took individual honors with a time of 17:09. Coventry senior Tom Hazard
came in second, having made up six places in the final 800 yards. Hazard's time was 17:23.
Despite yesterday's warm weather and high humidity, Crocker was cool in negotiating St.
George's now-famous hills virtually unchallenged.
"I like hill running," said Crocker, who turned in a winning time of 20:26 last year on
a somewhat flatter State Meet course at Fort Adams Park.
Crouse finished second to Crocker yesterday in 21:05. Finishing fourth behind Murgia was
teammate Kasey Cote (21:44). South's Shannon McIntyre placed fifth (22:15), followed by
Coventry's Emily Herron (22:23) and Corey Lancellotta (22:42).
Interestingly, South's Wright, a 1,500-meter runner in the outdoor track season, ran 32
seconds faster on hilly terrian than he did over flat country at Goddard Park in Warwick,
site of the boys' Injury Fund Relay Carnival last week.
"I was working on mental focus this time," said Wright, whose brother Chris placed sixth
yesterday (17:38)."I love this course. The first part seems so easy, but the hills are
something else. You can feel it in your legs. They're fun, though. This is better than a
flat course."
Placing third in the boys' race was the Rebels' Ryan Murphy in 17:27. South took all 10
places. Jon Egan finished fourth (17:29) and Jon Stokes fifth (17:33). Sophomore John Dunn
was Middletown's first scorer. He placed 12th in 19:07.
"We should be competitive," said Karen Johnson, the South Kingstown boys' coach. "We got
some mature runners this year, seniors and juniors. They're setting the pace, and are
close-knit. They've got an excellent attitude."
Sep 15, 2000 ... From Narragansett Times by Ken Castro
Crocker leads SK sweep
SOUTH KINGSTOWN - Meredith Crocker led the defending state cross
country champions into the new season on Monday by tackling the
always difficult course at St. George's and forging a victory over
divisional rivals Middletown and Coventry.
Crocker's relatively solo effort at the head of the pack rewarded
her with the only sub-20 minute clocking in the competition.
Teammate Lindsey Crouse and newcomer Shannon McIntyre rounded out
the top three scoring places for the Rebels.
Although the personnel has been tweaked a bit from the 1999 edition,
South Kingstown has filled the spots admirably in the early going.
"We lost a majority of our top scorers from last season but everyone
has responded by running very well," said Rebel coach Sherry
Hathaway.
Hathaway said that beyond Crocker, the Rebels support crew is
talented as well. "Marilyn Woodford is quite a competitor but
unfortunately she had breathing problems on Monday and had to drop
out, but I expect her to be one of our top scorers as well
throughout the season," Hathaway said. Coach Hathaway also cited
McIntyre as a freshman that will get her share of top scoring
opportunities.
Leah Ferguson (8th-23:00), Aimee Bouchard (9th-23:24) and Trisha
Meehan (10th-23:42) all placed in the top ten for the Rebels in the
win.
Looking down the road, Hathaway foresees the Skippers from North
Kingstown as the team with the most talent-laden roster. "They have
three very quality runners in the top three and they have so much
depth. They are so strong that they will be very hard to beat," said
Hathaway.
Sep 18, 2000 (Match #M04): Wes/Rogers - Home
Home opener - Both teams, behind Crocker and Wright win
It was "senior night" afternoon for the girls. A small shock
considering it was the first home meet of the season. Seniors
presented flowers and other gifts were Marilyn Woodford, Meredith
Crocker, Aimee Bouchard, Trisha Meehan, and Courtney Adham.
The photographer from the SCI was there. Maybe there will be a
pix in the paper.
Crocker lead the race all the way. The big battle was for second
between Lindsay Crouse and Westerly's Emily Anderson. They were within
a stride of each other throughout much of the course. At the finish
Anderson had 2nd by six seconds. Marilyn Woodford seemed to have her
breathing problem under control for 5th place. Shannon McIntyre got
6th with the same time as Marilyn. Aimee Bouchard got the last scoring
spot for SK, finishing 10th.
The girls particpate in that "make your teammate a lunch" program
that many of the teams do. That girl up on the playground with
Trisha Meehan had enough food to feed an army.
In the boys race, Jon Egan (I believe) had a slight lead on the
flats but made a wrong turn at one of the orange cones and Ryan
Murphy was suddenly handed the lead. His lead didn't last long as
Michael Wright gained control by the time they left the flats. On
the second pass by the South Road playground, Wright was first,
Murphy had 2nd, Jon Stokes 3rd, Westerly's John Soderstrom 4th
and Chris Wright 5th. At the finish, thanks to Jon Egan, South had
a shutout win.
One of the Roger's runners was having a tough go. As he came
onto the flats, he announced he had already thrown up three times.
He made it though, sprinting the last 100 yards.
Alumni Ryan Lynch, SK '00, was there. See "Rebel Notes" below.

Fri, Sep 22, 2000 ... Excerpts from the Narragansett Times,
KEN CASTRO
COVENTRY - Early season returns on the cross-country front build a
strong case for the Southern Division as the strongest faction in
the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.
Experience led the way for the Rebels on their home course Monday as
they topped Rogers (0-4) and Westerly (2-3) by indentical scores of
15-50. Mike Wright and Ryan Murphy used their vast experience in
helping South Kingstown fashion a sweep of the first five positions.
Looking at the ability of girls teams' in the Southern Division
can be disheartening as well for their opponents come state
championship meet time. Defending state champion Meredith Crocker
of South Kingston and Lindsay Vieira of North Kingstown have battled
on many instances throughout their careers.
Their times thus far indicate that none of that is about to change
in the near future. Crocker went sub 19 minutes on the 3.0-mile
course at South Kingstown Junior High School on Monday in leading
the Rebels to a pair of victories over Westerly and Rogers. Vieira
led a 1-5 sweep in the Skippers win over Portsmouth (15-48) and
Middletown (15-50).
Sep 25, 2000 (Match #M05): Narr/Portsmouth/Prout -
Narragansett High School
Narragansett's Bloom in record; Little leads SK
SK's Mike Wright and Narragansett's Andy Bloom set a face pace
at the gun, running off the football field and through the gate at
the north end. On the first emergence from the woods, Bloom had
about a five yard lead on Mike. Ryan Murphy was third but would
later fall behind, not feeling that well, and finish 10th with the
5th scoring position for SK. Bloom's lead was about 25 seconds on
the second pass by the road out front. Around the football field
for the final time, his lead became about 130 yards. He ended with
a course record, beating Mike by 41 seconds.
Chris Wright got 2nd for SK, 5th over-all. Colin Murphy had a great
race, finishing 3rd/7th. Josh Atkinson got 4th/8th.
It looked like SK's Christie Boyer was the first through the
football gate. But after that, it was all SK's Allison Little, running
for the first time this season. Welcome back, Allison. (Meredith
Crocker was taking a rest.) The first four across the finish line were
all SK. Lindsay Crouse and Shannon McIntyre were 2nd and 3rd. Marilyn
Woodford had a long sprint to the end and managed to hold off
Portsmouth's Maher for 4th place. Allison's younger sister Molly
was the 5th scorer for SK, finishing just ahead of Ferguson and
Duszkiewicz.
Trisha Meehan also had a sprint to the finish. It appeared, from
afar, that her mini race was a dead heat.
Ian Smith is the new Portsmouth Coach, replacing Eric Winn.
Kind of damp. Buggy near the woods.

How did we do? - anyone know?
SCFun didn't make the trip. Evidently, the XC Meet was not the
story.
What happened after curfew? Let's hope all turns out for the
best and some valuable lessons are learned.
First 100 finishers got medals. The girls' team did well
winning their division. Allison Little and Meredith Crocker got
2nd and 3rd respectively. The course was 3.1 miles.
The best room was the "Bowman, Burt, Donnel, Stanhope" room.

Freshman leads Nashua girls to 3rd
MANCHESTER - Led by three runners in the top 20, Nashua High
School's girls cross country team finished third in the elite
division of the 26th annual Manchester Invitational on
Saturday at Derryfield Park.
Freshman Laura Aloisi (7th, 20 minutes, 4 seconds), junior
Kerri Connerty (11th, 20:16) and junior Nicholle Davis (19th,
20:54) fueled the Panthers' 97-point accumulation, one better
than Pinkerton's fourth-place effort over the hilly course.
Nationally ranked Manchester Central easily won the division
behind No. 3 Liz Gesel and No. 4 Sarah Girard over Concord.
In the boys' elite division, Bishop Hendricken, R.I., won
overall with 83 points and traditional power Londonderry beat
a field which included five teams within 15 points for second
through sixth. Manchester Central's Peter Mallet won the race
in 16:13.
In the girls Large School Division, Bishop Guertin's Anna
Castner was the top local finisher with a ninth-place showing
in 20:54. The Cardinals came in fourth out of 17 teams.
Alvirne's John Kennedy finished seventh in the boys' Large
School Division with a time of 17:09.
Souhegan's girls placed 14th among 33 teams behind 29th-place
finisher Angela Cases in the Small School Division and
Pelham's Patrick Moulton ran second with a time of 16:03 to
lead the Pythons to a seventh-place overall showing among 40
teams.
The challenging Derryfield Park course is traditionally the
site of the New Hampshire championship races and the
Manchester Invitational serves as the midseason barometer of
where teams and runners stand.
Oct 03, 2000 (Match #M07): NK and Chariho at Ryan
Park, NK
North Kingstown is too strong
It was a beautiful day at Ryan Park in North Kingstown. About 80
degrees. All the teams were undefeated except for the Chariho girls.
Lots of media present, including the NT and SCI.
North Kingstown dominated both the boys' and the girls' runs.
It was good to see Jon Stokes back in action. Colin Murphy, in street
clothes right up until the start, led his brother Ryan into the woods
but Ryan had 2nd South out of the woods. Colin got 5th SK boy.
Some Chariho runners thought the course was short. Also, the lead
NK runner cut the course short on at least one occasion.
Meredith Crocker led the South girls. She got 2nd place overall, about
350 yards behind the winner. Allison Little was a no-show. She was
sick at the pasta party the night before. Marilyn Woodford had a
courageous run. Her breathing problem got the best of her and she
sounded like a train in the final stages. She managed to finish but
was in rough shape as coach Hathaway and others helped her with
blankets and ice. She bounced back in about 10 minutes.
Team pictures were taken for both teams. Al Southwick was lining the
softball field for soccer or field hockey.

Boys Cross Country: NK wins boys battle
By: MATT BEZUYEN
NORTH KINGSTOWN - Anyone's race turned out to be North Kingstown's.
The Skipper boys' cross-country team won a battle of unbeaten teams
on Tuesday at Ryan Park to claim its third straight Southern
Division championship.
North Kingstown downed Chariho 21-39 and South Kingstown 19-36. All
of the teams entered the tri-meet with a record of 7-0.
"I felt that the race could go to any of the three teams," said
North Kingstown coach Paul Tetreault. "Initially I though Chariho
would be the team. Later in the season, I thought it would be South.
After our last meet, I realized that it was going to be close, and
we might have a shot."
Leading the way for the Skippers was Josh Oldrid who won his fourth
consecutive race. Oldrid competed the 3.0-mile course in 17 minutes
and three seconds. The next finisher was the Chargers Shaun Horgan
who came in at 17:17.
"Josh was sky high before the race. He's normally not that excited,"
said Tetreault. "He knew it was a major race, and we talked about
not losing focus. The fact that Josh got out quick and never looked
back was big. I told him before the race that it would be to his
advantage not to get into an all out sprint at the end."
Tetreault wanted his pack to get out quick early, but what happened
at the beginning of the race, made the coach a bit nervous.
"I was nervous when I looked out and saw Mike Hutchison setting the
pace," said Tetreault. "He was a real factor finishing fourth for
us. Sometimes when a runner does that, there is a danger that they
can get over their head."
North Kingstown's Nate Fuller placed third in 17:18 and Hutchison
was right behind in 17:22. Chariho's Martin Donavan took fifth in
17:37. South Kingstown didn't have a runner finish until Mike Wright
took seventh, but there depth gave them a victory over Chariho,
25-35.
"We had a nice pack out there, we've been working on getting our one
through seven runners close together," said South Kingstown coach
Karen Johnson. "Now we have to get them closer to the front."
The next three finishers after Wright were Ryan Murphy (17:50),
Chris Wright (18:02) and Jon Stokes (18:07), all of South Kingstown.
Although the Chargers put two runners in the top-five, their lack of
depth hurt them in the team scoring. Chariho was especially effected
by the fact that Mark Kasabuski, normally its second finisher, was
hampered by cramps and placed 18th.
"We thought we had a shot at it," said Chariho coach Bill Haberek.
"Any time you go through the season 7-0, you believe you have a
chance. "We thought that North was probably the strongest team, although
we have a great deal of respect for South. We're not a deep team. We
needed everyone to be on, and a couple of our top-five guys were
off."
All three schools qualify for the state meet by finishing in the top
three spots in the league. The next action for all three will come
in the Southern Rhode Island Public School meet on Oct. 11.
Girls Cross-Country: NK tops South
By: MATT BEZUYENOctober 06, 2000
NORTH KINGSTOWN - It may have been the passing of the torch, but
then again, you can never count out a five-time champ.
The North Kingstown girls' cross-country team defeated South
Kingstown in a Southern Division meet on Tuesday at Ryan Park,
20-41. The Skippers also downed Chariho 16-47. The two wins complete
a perfect 9-0 dual meet season and give North the division crown.
"This is a big win, but it is early. The girls were pumped up, and
running in packs," said North Kingstown coach Keven O'Neil. "We're
basically halfway through the season. We're shooting for the states,
we have a long way to go."
The Rebels came into the race as the five-time defending state
champs, but could not overcome the Skippers depth. North Kingstown
had four runners finish in the top-five, including Lindsay Vieira
who took first place with a time of 18 minutes and 39 seconds.
"I knew they were deep, you could tell in the Injury Fund," said
South Kingstown coach Sherry Hathaway. "They are a strong team and
you can tell that they trained hard over the summer."
Vieira crossed the line nearly a minute before second place finisher
Meredith Crocker of South Kingstown. Crocker, a senior, is the
defending individual champ, but did not run last week due to an
injury.
"Winning this race makes me even more nervous," said Vieira. "Anyone
can have a good day, I still look at her as the best runner in the
state."
It was the first time Vieira had ever defeated Crocker in
cross-country, although the junior has beaten her on the oval. Last
year when the two teams met, Vieira took a wrong turn and didn't
complete the course, something she said has motivated her.
"Lindsay looked great. Before the race she was nervous," said
O'Neil. "But she stepped it up. Sometimes being nervous fires you
up. For Lindsay to beat a runner like Meredith Crocker says a lot about
her. She's been in the weight room and the hard work is paying off."
After Crocker, three Skippers _- Margaret Loughlin, (19:47), Kate
Buckley (19:55) and Shannon Leary (20:11) - came across the finish
line. Chariho's Rebecca Anderson broke the North Kingstown run,
placing sixth in 20:12.
"They are like a flock of geese out there," said O'Neil about his
squad. "Lindsay leads and the rest are right there with her. The
team is a close knit unit."
South's Lindsay Course placed seventh in a time of 20:43 and was
followed by three North Kingstown runners who rounded out the
top-10. Leah Sullivan (21:03), Claire Berman (21:25) and Stephanie
Kolling (21:28) were the next three across the stripe.
The win was clearly big for the North Kingstown runners, who donned
face paint under their eyes for the race. The Skippers have a young
team, with just two seniors on its' roster.
"The girls are mentally tough. They put on war paint before the
race," said O'Neil. "They have a great attitude. They have been
practicing since June. And we haven't even come close to the level
that I think we can attain."
South Kingstown was coming off a victorious performance at a meet in
Manchester New Hampshire, and was without its' number two runner,
Allison Little. The Rebels also dropped a dual meet last season, to
East Greenwich, before going on to successfully defend their title.
"We ran a tough, hilly course on Saturday, and I think we can do
better than we did today," said Hathaway whose team finishes the
Southern Division schedule 8-1. "I'm not going to count us out,
we're having a good season, and we'll build from here."
O'Neil also knows better than to count a team like South Kingstown
out. Although his squad has accomplished one of its goals, it has a
lot more to do.
"South raced this past Saturday and they were a little tired, so
we're not looking past them at all," said O'Neil. "We're rising up
with the likes of South Kingstown and La Salle. We want to raise the
level of the whole state. From the beginning, our goal is to finish
in the top-five in New England."
Oct 11, 2000 (Match #M08): So. RI at Goddard
Boys win tough one
Ms. Harvey was very excited - "We won, we won." It's a shame Coach
Johnson, who had other commitments, couldn't have been there to share
in the excitement. Congratulations to the boys' team.
The varsity race ran the same course as the freshmen but included an
extra loop in the woods. There were approximately 115 runners with the
top 58 getting a t-shirt. Mike Wright led the SK effort followed by his
brother Chris. Ryan Murphy, Josh (which one?), and Jon Stokes also
scored for SK.
Colin Murphy was ill and couldn't run.
The freshman race kicked off at 4:20p. SK's Nick Alfred ran a fine
18:47. The top two were from NK with the winner coming in about 13:08.
There were 55 runners in this race.

Crocker and Boys win
It was a sunny day, quite breezy with the flags straight out. It got
cooler and cooler as the sun dipped lower in the west.
There was a different start. All races started out back near the ball
fields - I assume because of the larger than normal field. There were
three races - varsity girls, varsity boys, and JV everyone else.
The SK girls ran well. SCFun is not sure of the results because nothing
has appeared in the papers yet. SK may have gotten second place.
Meredith Crocker led all the way in the girls' race. She was just in
front of an EG girl in the early going but as they came up the hill for
the home stretch, it was a Chariho girl in second place.
Meredith had a trophy at the end. Not sure if it was an individual or
team trophy. Allison Little was there but still not 100%. All the SK girls
ran in the varsity race whereas half the SK boys ran in the varsity and
half in the JV race.
Marilyn Woodford was breathing hard but finished strong. It's not
her favorite course.
A Bronco runner led all the way for the boys. That's Burrilville,
right? Mike Wright got 4th for SK. Not too far behind were Chris Wright,
Ryan and Colin Murphy, and Jon Stokes to give SK the team victory.
SK's Pat Mahoney won individual honors in the JV race. It was
close down the stretch but he hung in there and was all smiles after
the race.

Oct 28, 2000 (Match #M11): Class Meets - Bryant
Meredith Crocker and Ryan Murphy lead SK
A week of beautiful Indian Summer weather ended with very windy
conditions at Bryant. The course was very steep in the middle,
going to and coming from the lower plateau. There was a soccer
game in progress next door.
The varsity boys ran at 11:00a. Before the tennis courts, Mike
Wright was 14th, brother Chris 17th, Ryan Murphy 20th, Jon Stokes 21,
followed by Jon Egan and Josh Atkinson and Colin Murphy.
After the lower run, two Cumberland runners were neck and neck.
Ryan Murphy had moved up to first SK runner. He was about 25th.
Mike Wright was 28th and Chris Wright was 29th. At the finish, Chris
had moved up to 2nd SK runner. He had a great sprint at the end as
did Colin Murphy. Mike was disappointed - Bryant is not his favorite
course. Colin looked like he had left a 100% effort on the course.
Jon Stokes was not happy with his hill effort. Ryan Murphy was
pleased with his run although three more places would have meant
"all class".
Merdeith Crocker was right on the leader in the early going of the
girls' race. After coming up the hill, the leader, NK's Vieira had
about a 120 yard lead on Meredith who had about a five yard lead on
the third place girl. Meredith, fighting off stomach cramps, finished
third. Lindsay Crouse, Shannon McIntyre, Marilyn Woodford, Bouchard,
Trish Meehan and Molly Little all ran well for SK. Molly moved up
two places before the end to become the fifth SK scorer after Crouse,
McIntyre and Woodford.
Many of the varsity runners didn't know their place. The JV runners
were all handed cards with their place.
In the boys JV race, Vincent Criscione was the early leader for SK.
He was followed by Brian Wendell. Late in the race, it looked like
Wendell had 24th, David Stanhope 27th, and Vincent Criscione 28th.
Brian finished 25th, with David right on his back in 26th place.
Hendricken was all over the top ten. Coach Johnson was pleased with
the JV Boys' 5th place finish.
Nashita Roy led the SK girls from start to finish. She got 8th place.
A few of the JV girls were upset, either with their performance or
the course. SCFun was afraid to ask.
Great job everyone.
Distance = 3.1 miles.

Ponaganset's Lawson posts best time in Class meet
Hendricken takes the team title in Class A, followed by La Salle in Class
B and Smithfield in Class C.
By BOB LEDDY
Journal Sports Writer
SMITHFIELD -- "I wanted to run a strong [last] mile," said Ponaganset's
Mike Lawson.
The Chieftain senior long-distance ace did just that yesterday in chilling
hold-on-to-your hat winds that sliced across the 3.1-mile course at Byrant
College.
Running in the Class B portion of the state Class Championships, Lawson
turned that final mile into a winning time of 16 minutes, 29.1 seconds. He
had to beat back a stiff challenge from La Salle's Paul Simas (16:48),
Liam Butler (16:55) and Dan Kesack (16:56), who finished 2-3-4 for the
Maroon.
"The wind was rough the whole way, but it was the same for everyone," said
Lawson, who was unofficially timed at 10:20 at the two-mile split.
The other uniform aspect of the Class meets was the newly mapped 3.1-mile
course at Bryant. Because of construction on campus, league officials had
to move the Class and State meets last year to Fort Adams Park in Newport.
Yesterday's meets were a good trial run on the new course before next
weekend's State Championships.
Hendricken won the Class A team prize, but individually it was a 1-2
Cumberland finish yesterday. Clipper sophomore Neil Hamel won the race in
16:41, followed by senior teammate Andrew Mandeville in 16:46.
"I was going for second and third," said Cumberland's Mandeville, who
congratulated Hamel at the end of the finish chute.
Otherwise, the race belonged to the Hawks, who placed seven finishers
among a tightly-bunched top 10.
Hendricken senior Corey Manchester came through in third (16:54), while
teammate Craig Fountain placed fourth, also in 16:54. Behind Fountain
yesterday, Hendricken senior Ryan McConnell came in fifth. His time was
17:06. Hawk Matt Donohue also turned in a time of 17:06 for sixth place.
Toll Gate junior Mike Thornley finished seventh -- in 17:08.
Cumberland came in second in Class A team scoring with 50 points. North
Kingstown registered 90 points in coming in third.
Hendricken's David Murphy won the state JV Championship. His time was
17:55. The Hawks took team honors.
North Kingston's Vieira a wire-to-wire winner
It's the second consecutive Class A title for the junior All-Stater.
By BOB LEDDY
Journal Sports Writer
SMITHFIELD -- Running strong from wire to wire -- her vision protected
from sun glare with eye-black while focusing on the open field ahead of
her, her arms pumping with precision even in the last few hundred meters
-- Lindsay Vieira yesterday added another laurel to a fine 2000
cross-country season.
The North Kingstown junior put decisive distance between herself and the
rest of the pack in winning her second straight Class A championship along
3.1 windswept miles at Bryant College.
The course now in use at Bryant has been modified somewhat from the
previous route used for the high school meets. And while yesterday's
blustery conditions vexed some runners, all agreed the new course was a
good one.
North Kingstown's day was made sweeter by capturing its second consecutive
win in the team sweepstakes against the Southern Division's other powers,
South Kingstown and Coventry.
North Kingstown's 37 points were followed by the Rebels' 66 points for
second place, and the Oakers' third-place total of 77 points. The Skippers
and Rebels didn't go head-to-head last year at this meet. South Kingstown
was the '99 Class B titlist.
Vieira, a '99 Journal All-Stater, clocked 19 minutes, 12.5 seconds
yesterday in besting a field that included defending state champion
Meredith Crocker, of South Kingstown. Crocker finished third in 19:57,
behind Cumberland's Hilary Dionne, who was second in 19:40.
Vieira, who beat Crocker head-to-head in dual-meet competition earlier
this season, was taking nothing for granted yesterday.
"My goal was to stay with Meredith," said Vieira, who was the first Rhode
Islander to finish (third overall) at last weekend's Brown Invitational.
"She can win on any day. I still think she's the best runner in the
state."
Vieira clocked 5:38 at the mile split. Crocker, who cramped up about two
miles into the race, was 5:35 at the same checkpoint. The two girls were
stride-for-stride after the first 500-meter loop of the race.
"Lindsay's been doing very well," said Crocker.
The spectre of former South Kingstown distance great Rosie Woodford was
present for both girls yesterday. Crocker, of course, was a Woodford
teammate, while Vieira is seeking to emulate Woodford's performance.
(Woodford is now a Brown University sophomore).
"My goal at the States [meet] is to run 18:40, like Rosie did," Vieira
said.
The state girls' JV championship was won by Ponaganset's Sara Duquette in
a time of 21:58.
Nov 05, 2000 (Match #M12): States at Bryant
Girls 5th; Boys 11th in the last States of the 2nd Millennium
The sun was out earlier in the day but it didn't last long. The boys
got their run in at 1:00 and at 1:30 it started to rain. It was one of
those wet rains, not a dry one.
Some felt the management of the finish shoot was handled poorly,
with many kids getting out of their order of finish.
It's all "relative", but compared to previous performances, it looks
like Josh Atkinson had a great run, finishing second for SK. Mike Wright
again had a tough time with the hills. Colin and Jon Stokes couldn't
find anything good to say about the hills.
Meredith Crocker finished 5th overall. She still was not feeling 100%.
Nashita Roy was moved up from JV to Varsity and did well with a 6th for SK.
For those not going to the New Englands, congratulations on a great
year. Good luck to the girls in the New Englands. Thanks to coaches
Johnson and Hathaway for a job well done.

McConnell soars like a Hawk, By BOB LEDDY, Journal Sports Writer
SMITHFIELD -- Yesterday was a perfect day for Hendricken's Ryan McConnell
at Bryant College. In fact, the Hawks' senior went 3-for-3.
McConnell not only won the boys individual title, but helped his program
garner the R.I. state championship, its 12th. And if that wasn't enough,
he also made a little history along the way.
Running in blustery conditions under a gunmetal sky along the partially
revamped 3.1-mile course at Bryant, McConnell clocked a time of 16
minutes, 14.2 seconds to become the millennium's first individual
champion.
McConnell also became the first Hendricken harrier to win an individual
championship in nearly two decades. (In 1982, Hendricken senior Waldo
Manning handily took the title on a slightly different course here.)
The Hawks totaled 43 points in winning the team prize. Ponaganset, last
season's team champs, finished second with 64.
McConnell and his coaches yesterday mapped out a more conservative
strategy than he utilized a week ago in finishing fifth at the Class A
meet.
"I took the lead with about 1,000 meters to go," said McConnell, who
placed fourth at last year's State Meet. "I went 4:48 in the mile
[yesterday] and 4:40 last week. It was a better strategy to run an even
pace."
McConnell said maintaining a consistent rhythm is not always easy, given
the inherent pressures of a state championship. "The pressure is to go
faster," he said.
"He made some mental mistakes last weekend," said Hendricken co-coach Jim
Doyle. "Today, he had a better game plan."
McConnell was in a super-talented field that included Ponaganset's Mike
Lawson, Cumberland's Neil Hamel and La Salle's Paul Simas.
Simas finished second with a time of 16:29.
"I didn't want to go out too quick," said Simas, a repeat first-team
All-Stater. "I wanted to keep at a reasonable pace."
Simas was 4:50 at the mile checkpoint.
"There were some sharp turns," said Simas. "My goal today was to beat
[Mike] Lawson.
Hamel, the Clippers' sophomore, made a big splash by coming in third, in
16:30. Lawson, who last week went 16:29 in winning the Class B title here,
clocked 16:33 for fourth place.
"I never felt really smooth," the Chieftains senior said. "McConnell ran a
great race."
The Rams, who wound up third in team standings (65 points) received a
strong performance from Liam Butler. Butler, one of the key elments in La
Salle's success all season, finished fifth in 16:33. He placed eighth at
last year's State Meet.
"We've got a rivalry going," Simas said of his teammate, Butler. "We're
friends. We push each other."
Cumberland's Andrew Mandeville turned in a time of 16:41 for sixthfollowed
by Smithfield senior Joe Parenteau's 16:45.
Woonsocket senior Justin Townsend was an eighth-placer with a time of
16:46.
The Clippers 102 points were good for fourth place in team standings.
After the meet, North Kingstown coach Paul Tetreault was named boys Coach
of the Year.

Vieira wins girls' State title, By BOB LEDDY, Journal Sports Writer
SMITHFIELD -- Yesterday, Lindsay Vieira wore white socks with piglet
designs on them. She even had a pink paper pig stuck to her left cheek. "I
like them," the North Kingstown distance ace smiled.
Vieira, a junior, is also fond of running a strong cross country race --
and of winning, apparently. And that's just what she did yesterday in a
light, windblown rain that lanced across Byrant College's 3.1-mile route,
and drove temperatures downward.
Pumping her legs with the same precision and strength she displayed a week
earlier in taking the Class A title, a resolute Vieira yesterday went 18
minutes, 58.7 seconds in capturing the State Meet title while clearly
outdistancing the rest of the field.
What's more, Vieira and a contingent of strong Skippers runners -- the
same undefeated squad that won this season's Southern Division crown --
put 49 points up for the team championship yesterday.
Ponaganset was second in team scoring with 126 points. Coventry, another
strong program this season, was third with 136 points.
Lincoln sophomore Liz Carlson finished second in 19:19, and Cumberland
sophomore Hilary Dionne became the first female runner from her school in
10 years to finish among the top seven. She was third yesterday in 19:22.
(Kerry Brothers was All-State in 1980.)
Chariho, showing some cross country muscle this fall, was ably represented
by sophomore Becky Anderson (fourth in 19:26).
South Kingstown senior Meredith Crocker, last year's individual titlist,
finished fifth in 19:54. "I didn't feel well," said a disappointed
Crocker.
Rebel Lyndsay Crouse was sixth (20:03) and Skipper senior Margaret
Loughlin placed seventh in time of 20:04.
As did her male counterpart -- boys' champ Ryan McConnell -- Vieira
yesterday ran a thoughtful race.
"The first mile wasn't too fast," Vieira said. "I was about 5:43 and last
week I was 5:36. My coach told me to stay with the pack. I got to the
mile, and Margaret [Loughlin] was right behind me. I didn't see anyone
else. I had enough left to keep going."
"This was my best time of the year," said Carlson, a veteran distance
runner with a Junior Olympic pedigree who placed fifth at last year's
States at Fort Adams Park, Newport. "I wanted to do the first mile in
5:40, but I was a little slower. I established my place [at] about two
miles."
Vieira not only basked in her own glory yesterday, but was quick to praise
her team.
"We've never been as focused as we were this year," Vieira said. "I wanted
to do good for the team. I think everyone's taken a step forward. This
year, we're so much better."
Besides Loughlin, North got scoring performances from Shannon Leary (11th
in 20:19) and Kate Buckley (13th in 20:24).
For Cumberland's Dionne, yesterday's win was "real exciting. At the
beginning of the season, one of my goals was to come in second or third.
I'm really happy . . . I like this course."
Oakers coach Clem Soscia was named Larry Gallogly Girls' Coach of the Year
after yesterday's meet.

Skippers, Hawks are champs
By: MATT BEZUYENNovember 07, 2000
SMITHFIELD - The North Kingstown girls' and Bishop Hendricken boys'
cross-country teams ran away with titles at the Rhode Island
Interscholastic League championships on Sunday at Bryant College.
The Hawks took back their title from Ponaganset to win their third
championship in four years. The winners totaled 43 points, which was
ahead of the Chieftains who had 64 and La Salle Academy, which
scored 65
Hendricken's Ryan McConnell captured the individual title to give
the Hawks their first such champion since the early 1980's.
McConnell ran the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes and 14 seconds,
which was 15 seconds faster than the Rams Paul Simas who ran a 16:29.
The Skippers won the race in the team standings going away, as did
their top runner Lindsay Vieira who won the individual title by 20
seconds.
North Kingstown had a team total of 49 points, which was well ahead
of second place Ponaganset which had 126. The Skippers win ended
South Kingstown's five-year run as girls' state champions. South
placed fifth with a score of 158. Coventry (136) was third and East
Greenwich (144) was fourth.
Bishop Hendricken had all five scorers finish in the top-15 runners
among the team qualifiers. And all seven Hawk runners placed in the
top-20.
North Kingstown put three runners among the first 10 to cross the
finish line and all five scorers placed in the top-20 among the team
runners. Vieira topped those with a time of 18:58.
The Rebels had two runners place in the top-five, but North's team
was two deep for anyone to catch. Defending champ Meredith Crocker
took fifth overall and fourth in the team race, with a time of 19:54
and Lindsay Crouse was right behind her in 20:03.
Elizabeth Carlson of Lincoln was the next runner to finish after
Vieira, running in 19:19. Hilary Dionne of Cumberland took third in
19:22 and Rebecca Anderson of Chariho place fourth overall with a
time of 19:26.
The girls' field was a glimpse of the future, as all four of the
top-four runners were underclassman, with Vieira a junior and the
rest sophomores.
Shannon McIntyre (28th, 21:28), Molly Little (57th, 21:31) and Aimee
Bouchard (64th, rounded out the Rebels scoring. Nishita Roy and
Marylin Woodford also ran for South Kingstown.
The South Kingstown boys' team placed 11th out of 16 teams, with 309
team points. Chris Wright was the top Rebels finisher, running in
38th with a time of 18:04.
Josh Atkinson (18:39), Ryan Murphy (18:54), Colin Murphy (19:05) and
Michael Wright (19:07) were the other South scorers. John Stokes
(19:09) and Jon Egan (19:14) also ran for the Rebels.
Adam Bloom represented Narragansett High as an individual, and
placed 75th overall in the race with a time of 18:48.
The top-six teams in each race earn trips to the New England
Championships. Hendricken, Ponaganset, La Salle, Cumberland, North
Kingstown and Smithfield will be the boys' team going. North
Kingstown, Ponaganset, Coventry, East Greenwich, South Kingstown and
La Salle will represent the boys.
The winners of the Larry Gallogly award for coach of the year went
to Paul Tetreault of North Kingstown on the boys' side and Clem
Soscia of Coventry in the girls' league. It was Tetreault's third
time winning the award.
