South Kingstown girls ...
SCFun wasn't there but we do have the article below
from the Providence Journal. Looks like the girls are off
to a good start.
Vieira fastest at Injury Fund meet
BY BOB LEDDY
Journal Sports Writer
WARWICK -- One race into the 2001 girls' cross country season and one
thing is already clear: North Kingstown's Lindsay Vieira is the front-
runner.
The North Kingstown senior and defending state champion yesterday got
her final high school season off to an auspicious start. Running in the
first of three varsity races at Goddard State Park in sub-6-minute
miles, Vieira traversed 3.1 mostly level miles in a time of 18 minutes,
13.33 seconds, better than a minute ahead of the second-place runner.
The other two varsity race-winners were South Kingstown's Allison
Little (19:36) and East Greenwich's Nicole Millette (19:28).
South Kingstown, a program that's always loaded with talent, seems no
different this season if yesterday's performance in the Caswell Race was
any indication. The Rebs' Little dueled with teammate Lindsay Crouse
throughout the 3.1 miles, with Crouse -- a first-team All-Stater last
season -- placing second in 19:46. South also took team honors with 48
points.
"I like this course," said Little, who took last season off from cross
country but is just off a fine spring track season. "It's not too hilly.
Lindsay and I worked together the last two miles."
Ponaganset's Morgan Wilson finished third in the Caswell Race. Her
time was 21:04. The Rebels' Shannon McIntyre placed fourth (21:16).

South Kingstown boys did so so ...
Nice day at Goddard. Lots of new kids on the team. Someday we will
figure out their names.
The SK boys had many runners in civilian clothes. Chris Wright
expects to be back any day from a broken toe. Colin Murphy hadn't yet
met the requirement for the minimum number (5) of practices. Scott
Bowman has a tooth injury.
North Kingstown swept their race. Hendricken may have also. There
were no results in ProJo, maybe the next day.
The times below are unofficial. Cormick Lynch, a transfer from
Hendricken, and newcomers Zach Smith and Josh Oberle, had good opening
days.
Congrats to Jon Stokes on a well run race.

Sep 10, 2001 (Match #M03): Middletown/Prout -
Chariho
South Kingstown Boys and Girls open with wins
It was a beautiful day at Chariho. Unfortunately Middletown
couldn't run due to their teachers' strike.
Scott Bowman was still out waiting for his gums to heal. He
hopes to start running in a few days. Peter Burt didn't run
because he hadn't completed the initial five practices.
The girls' race was tight. R. Anderson, from Chariho led
most of the way. Allison Little made a move near the end, at the
start of the big loop near the track but the Chariho girl was
able to hold her off. Lindsay Crouse was close behind and then
there was a big gap before coming to the fourth runner, Shannon
McIntyre.
The boys' race was similar with Jon Stokes right on the heels
of the eventual winner, S. Horgan. Colin Murphy, who led the race
early on, was also in the hunt. Chris Wright ran his first race
of the year still suffering from a broken toe and lack of
training.
It would be nice if most of the team didn't go back to their
camp site while teammates were still on the course. Stay around
and cheer them on. Also, it would be nice if they would pick
up their trash so the two coaches, as they did today, don't have
to clean up after the team.

Sep 12, 2001 ... from Narr Times, by Ken Castro
WOOD RIVER JUNCTION- Chariho runners topped their respective fields
in capturing individual honors in the first dual meet of the cross
country season Monday afternoon.
It was however an all South Kingstown show of team strength as both
the boys and girls teams came away big winners over their counterparts
from Chariho and Prout.
In the girls' race, Chariho's Rebecca Anderson continued to rise in
stature among the state's top harriers by winning the 3.0 mile test in
18.30 over her home course. Some 30 meters back of Anderson the South
Kingstown express was in full force virtually controlling the rest of
the pack behind Anderson and teammates Lindsay Crouse and Alison Little
who had both worked their way to Anderson's shoulder right from the
opening gun.
Nearly two miles in, the trio was unwilling to separate from each
other and the pace accelerated to a speed that put a huge gap of nearly
two minutes between the leaders and the chase group. With less than
3/4ths of a mile remaining Anderson forged ahead of the two Rebel
athletes and came home with a forty meter victory.
Little in second was followed by Crouse in securing the top three
spots. In fact, the Rebs took places 2 through 10 in winning handily by
a 20-43 score over the Chargers.
The boys' race had similar overtones in the way the results played out
on the course. Once again it was South Kingstown the aggressor at the
early stage of the competition. As the runners circumvented the Charger
track on their first of two loops around that facility it was clear that
Chariho's Shaun Horgan would have to battle the Rebel group that
numbered ten strong at the front in solo fashion. Tucked in between
South's John Stokes and Colin Murphy for the majority of the race,
Horgan made his triumphant move on a flat and open section of the course
in full view of Stokes and Murphy.
With less than a half-mile remaining to the finish on the Charger
track, the trio strung itself out leaving 10 second time gaps between
them. Stokes finished a strong second to the Chariho senior while Murphy
cruised home in third.
"The work I did this summer helped me big time," said Horgan who
clocked 16.53 for his efforts. "This was the best shape I've ever been
in. Running this fast at this point in the year is really a good way to
start for me."
As for slipping away from a hoard of opponents at the head of the
group Horgan offered, "That's usually my tactic in just about any race.
I just try and go out on my own and not really worry about place till I
get about two-miles out and then I try and move it up. It's hard
mentally when you are in that situation of being behind and pulling
yourself all the way back to the front, but physically that's how I
run."
Sep 17, 2001 (Match #M04): Wes/Rogers - Home
Home opener - Boys win two; girls split
Nice day in what has been a nightmare week. The first meet since the
terrorist attacks (9/11/01) on the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and an
aborted attack that resulted in a plane crash in PA. We are at War.
It was a fairly easy win for the boys. The girls came close to beating
Westerly.
New course - automatic new course records. The new course doesn't go past
South Road School as it used to. And the finish is a little different with
an excursion into the woods ending with a small hill and a quick left turn
onto the main field.
Jon Stokes maintained a small lead throughout the boys' race. Lindsay
Crouse, Allison Little, and Emily Anderson were bunched until late when
Lindsay Crouse was the first to emerge from the woods. She beat Westerly's
Anderson by a few seconds. Last year, Anderson beat Lindsay by six seconds.
Nick Allard is injured with a bad back. It's day to day on his return.
Ryan Lynch, who is taking a course from Chris Wright's father at URI,
was there to visit his old teammates. So was Ryan Murphy. Jenn Hodge with
new baby, Eddie, was there to see some of her old kids from junior high.
The Schuette's were there cheering for Rogers. Their son Robert is a
junior at Clemson. Mrs. Atkins no longer coaches Rogers. She has retired.
She is still teaching however.

Colin Murphy earns his first XC win
It was a yukky day - foggy, humid, dark. It was also senior
meet and the kids' smiles and the flowers brightened things a
bit. Just four girls but about a dozen boys were running their
last home meet. All the parents were introduced. Lindsay Crouse's
mother showed a little late. SCFun undestands there were some
surprises along the route - a pink crane, Mini-Me, etc.
For a while, fans thought Narragansett was a no-show. They had
such a small squad, they have have been confused with Portsmouth's
"red".
Lindsay Crouse and Molly Little led throughout for the girls.
Lindsay eventually won. Shannon McIntyre, who was absent last week,
got to learn the course and finished third. Molly Little was fourth.
Morgan Santos, who gets better and better every week and finished
fifth.
Colin Murphy, in his blue socks, did a great job. He looked very
strong throughout. He followed Jon Stokes for the first half before
Jon fell back to third. Zack Smith, who is having a great first year
finished fifth. David Stanhope and Vin Criscione rounded out SK's top
five. Chris Wright is still bothered by the bruise on his big toe.
SK alums Ryan Murphy, Aimee Bouchard, and Katie O'Leary stopped by.
Ever wonder what happened to Maryanne Rivard. She is playing soccer
for La Salle.

Narragansett Times by Eric Creamer
Cross Country: SK boys undefeated
South Kingstown is known for having solid cross-country and track
programs. This year's high school boys' cross-country team has been no
exception.
Veteran Karen Johnson's squad is undefeated at 7-0 in the Southern
Division and tied with North Kingstown for first place. Johnson feels
this team has a lot of strengths and may be different from some of her
past teams.
"They are very determined, motivated, and dedicated to the sport,"
said Johnson. "They have a fire in them and are very competitive. They
are unlike some other teams in the fact that they bring each other up a
notch."
On Monday, South defeated Portsmouth and Narragansett by scores of
25-30 and 15-50 respectively. South's Colin Murphy came in first place
in the race, while Jon Stokes placed third, Zach Smith came in fifth,
and Dave Stanhope placed seventh.
"That race was one of the best competitions between two teams that
I've seen in a while." Said Johnson. "Stanhope and Smith really came
through."
Johnson feels that this team has come together and work well as a
team.
"We really have team unity," said Johnson. "It's an individual sport
by description, but the they are focused on helping the team out. It's a
pleasure to coach them."
Seniors Murphy and Stokes have been switching off at the number one
runner spot, and Johnson describes them as the team leaders. Johnson
feels the other runners have stepped up so far as well.
"Smith is only a sophomore and has been crucial and played a big part
in our last meet," said Johnson. "Stanhope has progressed and matured as
a runner.."
Johnson also believes that Chris Wright, Vin Criscione, McCormick
Lynch, Greg Horton, and Scott Bowman have been key runners for the
Rebels.
South takes on North Kingstown on Monday at NKHS at 3:30. Coventry
will also be competing in that meet.
"Our goal is to be in the top 10 at the state meet," said Johnson. "NK
will be tough and are always tough competitors. They looked super at the
Injury Fund, and we want to make it an interesting meet."
Girls Meet
South Kingstown went to 6-1 on the season with a sweep of Narragansett
and Portsmouth.
Lindsay Crouse won the overall race.

Cross Country: NK sweeps crowns
By: MATT BEZUYEN
October 04, 2001
NORTH KINGSTOWN - It took one day longer than expected, but the Southern
Division cross-country championships were decided at Ryan Park on
Tuesday.
The North Kingstown boys' and girls' cross-country teams each swept a
tri-meet with South Kingstown and Coventry to finish the season with
perfect 9-0 records, retaining the Southern Division Championships. The
meet was originally scheduled to take place on Monday.
In the boys' race, the Skippers dominated the field, downing the
Rebels 15-45 and the Oakers 15-50. Nick Cooper led a pack of six North
Kingstown runners, which crossed the finish line first, running the 3.1
mile course in 16:48.
On the girls' side, Lindsay Vieira, coming off the flu, took first
with a time of 18:29 to lead the Skippers past the Rebels (23-36) and
the Oakers (15-50).
"Karen (Johnson) and Sherri (Hathaway) are two quality coaches and
South Kingstown has always had the best cross-country program in the
state," said North Kingstown coach Paul Tetreault. "You measure your
team by the performance of others, and South Kingstown is known as the
best in the state, so we're happy."
Cooper's finish was the first race he has won according to Tetreault,
and it led an impressive Skipper charge. Josh Oldrid was in second in
16:51 followed by Eric Lonergan (16:59), Nate Fuller (17:10), Mike
Hutchison (17:12) and Rob Russ who made a late push to finish in 17:30,
just ahead of South Kingstown's Jon Stokes.
"South Kingstown has a quality program and we were telling the guys
that we have to have respect for them or they'd win," said Tetreault.
"We took the meet very seriously and ran well."
Tetreault was also happy with the times of his top runners, especially
Cooper, with the big meets on the horizon.
"Our top-six got out front and ran well," said Tetreault. "It was good
to see Nick win his first race. He was injured most of last year. It's
nice to have him running well with the big meets around the corner."
Once Stokes crossed the line, it started a string of seven consecutive
Rebels crossing the line. Colin Murphy (18:00) finished after Stokes,
followed by Cormick Lynch (18:01), David Stanhope (18:02), Zach Smith
(18:05), Brian Wendell (18:30) and Josh Oberle (18:32).
Mike Vingi was the first Coventry runner to cross the line, taking
19th with a time of 18:59.
A strong second half of the race by North Kingstown's second through
fourth runners proved to be the difference in the girls' race.
After Vieira, South Kingstown's Alison Little (18:54) and Lindsay
Crouse (19:13) were the next runners to finish.
After the two Rebels however were four straight North Kingstown
runners. Allison Hevenor took fourth in 19:52, Kate Buckley, who had
just recently returned from and injury, placed fifth in 20:02, Shannon
Leary placed sixth in 20:03 and Stephanie Kolling was seventh in 20:04.
"I couldn't be happier with the girls today," said North Kingstown
coach Keven O'Neil. "We wanted to get the top-five runners under 20
minutes, and they were all right there.
"Lindsay was coming off the flu, but her time was great. She ran fast
and furious."
South's Shannon McIntyre took eighth in 20:14, North's Jamie Sullivan
(20:49) was next followed by Jade Nanning (21:13).
Becky Chiarini was the first Oaker to finish, taking 11th in 21:19.
She was followed by teammates Kasey Cote (21:21) and Emily Herron
(21:38).
It was the second straight league title for North Kingstown, the
defending state girls champs. Tetreault likes what he sees from the
Skippers as the big meets approach.
"They're working real hard and it shows. If you were at the finish
line, you could see that the girls are giving it their all," said
Tetreault. "The senior leadership of Lindsay, Allison and Kate is great.
They step forward and it translates to the way they race."
Both North Kingstown teams will participate in the Annual Tarzan Brown
Training Camp, which the Skipper teams have done for 16 years. Tetreault
and O'Neil will take their teams to a camp in Charlestown where they
will train and have a weekend outing.
"It's a weekend that has always brought the team together. We train,
but we do a lot more then just running," said Tetreault. "It's also a
good time to shift the focus from the league meets to the big meets."

North Kingstown wins So. RI Invitational
Nice day. The new SK mascot, the "Rebel", was on hand. Mr. Brown,
from the Narragansett Times, was there to take a team picture.
Freshmen ran first over a 2.35 mile loop. SK had three freshmen running.
SCFun would give you their names and times but the uniforms have no numbers
and there was no program. Why can't each school number their uniforms?
A NK runner won in 13:21. Merola was first SK runner at 14:32.
Then the blond freshman at 16:14, and the third SK at 16:36. One was
Brad Swain. Supposedly, there are five freshmen on the team.
As usual, there seemed to be two courses. Some kids ran to the left
off that big tree, others ran to the right.
Then two cars, right in the middle of the start, were moved and the
varsity runners started. About half the kids got T-Shirts.
Jon Stokes, 7th with less than a mile to go, finished 9th. Colin
Murphy finished 2nd for SK. Chris Wright continues to move up as his
toe improves.

Hawks show team strength in finishing second
BY BOB LEDDY
Journal Sports Writer
WARWICK -- Hendricken's cross country team flexed its scoring muscles
yesterday at the 19th annual Brown University Cross Country Invitational
in advance of the coming class and Rhode Island championships.
The Hawks, looking mighty strong, scored 64 points in the Boys'
Championship Division, good for second place. Amherst (Mass.) High was
first with 48 points.
Meanwhile, for North Kingstown's Lindsay Vieira -- the defending
girls' state cross country champion -- yesterday's event was another
chapter in a career that has included a load of achievements against
out-of-state competition. Vieira finished seventh in the Championship
race with a time of 18:18. The race was won for the second straight year
by Lexington (Mass.) senior All-American Natasha Roetter, in 17:31.
Vieira, who was 5:36 at the mile and 11:29 at two miles on a 6-minute
pace, was second up to about 11/2 miles yesterday. "Then my legs just
wouldn't go anywhere," she said.
The South Kingstown girls scored well in the Varsity II Division.
Senior Allison Little finished fourth in 19:10, and teammate Lindsay
Crouse was close behind. Crouse, a '00 All-Stater, was fifth in 19:26.
Also scoring for the Rebels was sophomore Shannon McIntyre, who was 11th
in 20:10.
La Salle's Kaitlin Sweeney was the top local finisher in the Girls' JV
I race. She was 11th in 22:39. Teammate Sarah Sabo was 16th in 22:45. In
the Girls' JV II 3.1-miler, South Kingstown sophomore Colleen Kelley was
the first local finisher, in 21st place in 22:34. Ponaganset's Norm
Shippee was the first Rhode Islander to finish the Boys' JV II race. He
was 29th in 19:01.

Chris Wright leads boys - many sick
It was a nice fall day. Bryant College was getting ready to
play a football game.
South had a lot of kids under the weather. David Stanhope was
still recovering. Alison Little was huddled under a blanket. Her
sister, Molly, passed out on the course. Brian Wendell was not
100%. Didn't see Morgan Santos. [Paper says she had a sore ankle.]
ProJo didn't print JV Girls' results. Chelsea Herron fell on the
course and had to withdraw with a bad knee or ankle.
Chris Wright led SK for the first time this year. Maybe that toe
is better.
Colin Murphy just nipped Jon Stokes at the wire in the Varsity Boys'.
