South Kingstown boys come in third
SCFUN got there just before the freshman race. SCFun was told
later that the varsity came in third in their group. In the
freshman race, there must have been close to 20 teams competing
with each school allowed up to a max of five runners on the start
line. The ground was quite rough at the start. Just a 100 yards
in, it was mowed.
Ray Dwyer, in his 49th year of working the cross country
circuit, was the starter. The top 50 would get medals.
There were lots of "old timers" at this meet. Ray Nelson, the
former great local marathoner was there working in some
capacity. One of the coaches or officials was Bobby Doyle's
brother. Then there was that other great RI Runner that used to
give Doyle problems at the Ocean State Marathon - what is his
name - Tom Grundy? Hollie Walton and Roland Davide would complete
the picture.
SK's John Thompson, a semi-regular from the days of Girls'
Basketball, was helping out with the SK team.

Sep 13, 1999 (Match #M03): Ports/Cov/Prout - Portsmouth
South Kingstown Boys and Girls look strong
The schedule said Westerly and E.G. would be there but they
weren't. Prout was, however.
Note: Because of the number of teams in the Division and the
fact that a team only runs against a division opponent only once
during the regular season, South Boys did not score against
Prout, which will be at all the same meets as SK. SK will score
against them at the last meet of the season. The girls from
Prout didn't score against anyone - they were there weren't they?
When the teams walked the course, they disappeared for about
ten minutes after they walked into the woods at the bottom of the
hill. Were they ever going to come out?
The girls started first. After heading north and looping back,
Ms Murgia, from Coventry, led SK's Meredith Crocker through the
stables by about five feet. A few minutes later, back up on high
ground near the turn around the stone wall near the paved road,
Meredith had taken over the top spot. She cruised to the win in
20:13 followed by Kerri Bessette in 20:58. Murgia slipped to 3rd.
Allison Little finished 4th for SK. Coventry and Portsmouth took
the next six places to round out the top ten.
The boys started halfway through the girls' race. South took
seven of the top ten spots. Portsmouth had 3rd and 7th and
Coventry took 10th.
SK's Ryan Lynch and Mike Wright were neck and neck 2/3 of the
way through the course, just before heading down the hill and
into the woods. Ryan pulled out the victory.
David Stanhope went into the woods 36th and came out 29th. He
finished strong. Michael Galib ran well for Portsmouth, perhaps
in a rush to get home and get some pizza.
Tid bits: Allison Vannoy, SK '99, was in attendance. The
Coventry Coach was telling his team to go all out on the flats
and not to save anything for the final hill. Eric Winn, great
tri-athlete and Prout coach, wasn't happy the RIIL rescheduled
the girls at the same time the boys were running last week - he
coaches both. Don't ever try to make a left turn coming out of
Glen Rd onto East Main Road, it's impossible.

Defending state champs run into trouble in opener
PORTSMOUTH The South Kingstown H.S. girls cross-country
team opened the season, Monday, taking wins from
Coventry and Portsmouth. The scores were closer then in
recent memory as the Rebels only posted a two-point
victory over the Oakers 27-29, and handed the Patriots a
20-39 defeat.
Meredith Crocker made her mark, winning the first race
of the year, with a time of 20 minutes, 13 seconds.
Kerri Bessette, another South Kingstown runner, placed
second as the only other runner to eclipse 21 minutes
(20:58).
Coventry's Angela Murgia broke up a one-two-three S.K.
finish, which usually translates into an easy victory.
Murgia's time of 21:02 bested South's Alison Little
(21:19).
The Oakers and Pats combined to cross six runners before
the Rebels could score again. Amee Bouchard placed 11th
overall with a time of 22:51. Leah Furguson was South's
fifth and final scoring runner, placing 14th with a time
of 23:19.
Other South Kingstown finishers in the top 50 were:
15th, Tricia Meehan (23:29); 16th, Katie Ayers (24:06);
17th, Beth Rowinski (24:18); 18th, Beth Bouchard
(24:24); 27th, Courtney Adham (25:48) and 34th, Amy
Marcello (27:45).
The Prout School had two top 50 runners, participating
as individuals. Katie McGovern was 25th with a time of
25:17. Kaitlin Shalkowski placed 29th running a time of
26:27.
Sep 21, 1999 (Match #M04): NK/Midd/Prout - Home
Crocker leads the girls, Lynch the boys
It may have been the first and last home meet of the season
for SK. The boys' race was close, the girls' was a blow-out.
North Kingstown looked good. Their Dan Huling edged South's
Ryan Lynch by five seconds for the win. Lynch would get a taste
of the lead a couple times but North was just too strong.
Ryan had the lead coming down the hill after making the first
loop of the baseball field. He lost it at the South Road School
playground before going down the hill but regained it the next
time he came by the playground. By the time they reach the flats
again, North had control and held on for the win.
The girls' race seemed to have a few mishaps. South's Kerri
Bessette was first around the initial turn, followed by teammates
Allison Little, Meredith Crocker, and Erica Switzer. NK had fifth.
The next time by those cones, Meredith had the lead for good.
North had second, followed by Kerri and Allison with a NK girl
in 5th. Meredith had a huge lead on her return trip past the
playground. The second place NK girl couldn't even be seen. But
on the flats, it appeared the NK girl had made up a lot of
ground. But then, sad to say, she had some sort of accident -
tripped? She never finished.
Crocker breezed to the win by over a minute. Erica got 2nd,
Kerri 3rd. It looks like Alison Little dropped out somewhere
after the first trip past the playground.
A few of the runners wore spikes. Some of the course was on the
new bike path which "was" to be dedicated by Gov Almond next
Monday. Hopefully no one tripped over that big boulder right in
the middle of the path leading into the loop in the woods, midway
through the course - evidently that's the nature of the beast.
Many of the trailing girls cut their course short by
eliminating the final baseball field loop. The races did not
overlap as they did in Portsmouth last week. That was nice.
There were a few mosquitoes around. There was a small traffic
problem on Curtis Corner Road before the meet. One of South's
soccer players was in a very mild bumper-thumper. Not her fault
but a tail-gater; no one hurt.
Photographers were there from SCI and NT. One writer. ProJo
had the SK-NK score reversed.

South boys finish race strong
By MATT BEZUYEN
SOUTH KINGSTOWN While the score may not seem that close,
Tuesday's boy's cross country meet between North
Kingstown High and South Kingstown High was a dog fight
that went down to the wire.
After trailing through the first half of the race, the
Skippers put on a strong finish to come away with the
Southern Division victory 23-33.
"I always respect Karen's teams at South. We bring out
the best in them and they bring out the best in us to,"
said North Kingstown coach Paul Tetreault. "I was
stressing to our runners to respect our opponents and
this was a tough course.
"We're both pack teams and our strategy was to get our
pack out first. The first half of the race, they were in
front, but our pack responded very well. Our assistant
coach Kevin O'Neill was encouraging them at the end and
they really responded."
North also picked up wins over the Prout School (15-50)
and Middletown (17-44), to improve to 5-0 in the
Southern Division.
"Our division is very even, if a team doesn't come out
to run, they will get pounded," said Tetreault.
The Skippers were led once again by Dan Huling who set a
course record for the second straight week. The
sophomore ran the 3-mile course in 17 minutes and two
seconds.
"Dan ran against some good competition," said
Tetreault. "He was laid back in the beginning, but once
he went by, he went by."
The course was brand new for this season at the junior
high school, and Huling like the lay out.
"It wasn't that tough and it was mostly in the woods, a
true cross country race," said Huling. "I passed Ryan
Lynch (South Kingstown) with about 800 meters to go and
just kept going."
Lynch led the Rebels by placing second, nine seconds
behind Huling.
The next South runner to cross the finish line was Mike
Wright who took fifth with a time of 17:31. Ryan Murphy
(seventh) and John Egan (eighth) were the next Rebs to
finish. Josh LaMothe was the final South scorer, placing
13th.
Placing third in the race was senior Adam Hevenor who
ran the course in 17:11. Hevenor was followed by Josh
Oldrid who took fourth in 17:12.
Sean Kelley was the fourth North Kingstown runner in,
placing sixth with a time of 17:38. Tetreault praised
Kelley after the race for moving up from 14th place
mid-way through the race to sixth.
Mike Hutchison was the final Skipper to score, placing
11th with a time of 18:05. The North Kingstown team was
helped by its' sixth and seventh-place runners who beat
the Rebels fifth runner to give the North extra points.
Those runners were Drew Anderson and Eric Lanergan.
*****************************
S.K. Girls remain undefeated
SOUTH KINGSTOWN The South Kingstown High girl's cross
country team is off to a great start in the 1999 season,
winning its first four races.
The Rebels improved to 4-0 on Monday with wins over
Middletown and North Kingstown.
South Kingstown proved to be to much for both teams as
the Rebels turned it on over the last half of the race
to win 22-33 over North and 15-50 over Middletown.
Meredith Crocker was the class of the field, finishing
over a minute before the next runner came in.
Crocker went into the woods about mid-way through the
race with a decent lead, but came out well ahead of the
next runner.
The Rebel finished the first ever girls race on the new
South Kingstown course with a time of 19 minutes, 29
seconds. The course was three miles long.
South Kingstown also placed the next two runners.
Erica Sweitzer finished in second with a time of 20:41
and Keri Bessette took third with a time of 21:08.
Margaret Laughlin, of North Kingstown, was able to break
the string of South Kingstown runners by taking fourth
place (21:13). The Skippers would also take fifth and
sixth as Kaitlin Buckley and Shannon Leary were the next
two runners across the finish line.
Katie O'Leary and Aimee Bouchard rounded out the Rebels
scoring in the race. O'leary took seventh in a time of
22:12 and Bouchard placed ninth with a time of 22:28.
The first 25 runners to finish the race were from either
North or South Kingstown. Sarah Snydacker of Middletown
placed 26th, and Prout's Sue Beck came in behind her to
break the string.
Sep 27, 1999 (Match #M05): Wes/Rog/Prout - St. George's
Boys and Girls sweep the competition
Another close one for the boys while the girls crushed their
competition.
In the boys' race, there was a good mix of SK and Westerly
runners in the lead pack at most check points. That packed
thinned as the race went along and towards the end and it came
down to about four runners with a chance for the win. It turned
into a sprint as Westerly's Saperita and SK's Lynch turned at the
stone wall for the final straight-away. Saperita won.
It was Colin Murphy's first meet for SK.
Meredith Crocker once again had a huge lead, her margin of
victory almost a minute. SK girls just missed a perfect score.
There was a Westerly girl (Anderson?) who was challenging
Meredith for awhile but she either fell back or the SK girls
surged.
Erica Sweitzer, still recovering from Mono & Lyme Disease,
claimed 2nd. Nicole Ambrosetti ran well for 3rd in the first meet
she has been eligible to compete in since transferring from
Prout. Allison Little got back on track with a 4th.
Trisha Meehan and Beth Bouchard sat out with shin problems.
SCFun had been by St. G many times but never out back. Lots of
playing fields. A new brick dorm gave it a URichmond flavor. Did
SCFun hear that it's mid-$20K to attend?

South boys, girls run in top form
By KEN CASTRO
NEWPORT - Rogers and Westerly took a first hand look at
the balance of power in the Southern Division and
decided that they didn't necessarily like what they saw.
South Kingstown's boys and girls teams, both sporting
gaudy records ventured to Aquidneck Island Monday and
attacked one of the most difficult courses in New
England, and came away unscathed.
In the boy's contest, South (5-1) defeated previously
unbeaten Westerly 26-31 and was less that hospitable to
their hosts, topping Rogers in a shutout 15-50.
On the girl's side the results were much of the same as
South silenced Westerly 16-45 and bested Rogers 15-48.
"We set goals for ourselves at the beginning of each
week and then work hard to see them through. Our goal
today was to push everything at the front and that's
exactly what we did," said boys coach Karen Johnson.
Johnson was quick to point out that although the record
and recent scores would indicate that her team is
running on all cylinders at this juncture in the year
there is still a heap of work yet to be performed, "We
are not close to where we want to be at this point as
there is always room for improvement. Obviously our
focus is on the states," she said.
Ryan Lynch, Michael Wright and Jon Egan took the
initiative to keep the front of the pack animated
throughout the race forcing westerly to play catch-up on
the extremely hilly course at St. Georges school. Only
Westerly's John Saporita was able to keep the pace and
sprinted past Lynch at the finish winning by four
seconds. After Lynch and Wright crossed, the Westerly
duo of Chris Korytkowski and Mike Tangey hit the tape
next but it was the quartet of Egan, Graham Heffernan,
Josh Lamothe and Ryan Murphy that broke up the Westerly
plan of placing their number four and five runners in
the mix.
"We had planned on breaking up the Westerly pack by
having everyone go at our surge point that was just
after the two mile mark and it worked well," Johnson
said.
Johnson sees her depth as the season progresses with the
emergence of Murphy who has improved immeasurably,
"Ryan has been running very well, and he has been
running closer to our top two of Ryan (Lynch) and Mike
(Wright). It's a nice situation to be in."
Coach Sherry Hathaway's success with the girls program
has run parallel to Johnson's results. Meredith Crocker
took over the girl's race from the start and was
assisted by Erica Swetizer who looks to be in top form
after an early season injury, and Nicole Ambrosetti a
transfer student from Prout who has just become eligible
to compete. Allison Little and senior Kerri Bessette
rounded out the top five finishers for the Rebels (6-0).
Westerly's Emily Anderson avoided a shutout by slipping
into the fifth position. For the Rebel girls the much
anticipated showdown with East Greenwich will highlight
the last dual meet of the season before the compete in
the southern Rhode Island invitational (Oct 13), and
Brown Invitational (Oct 16).
The Class meet is scheduled to be held at Bryant College
on October 30.

Exciting meet - close
No one thought this meet would be run. At noon, there was
thunder and the heavy rains from earlier in the morning were
continuing. The weather still looked questionable minutes before
the meet began but all went well as the dark clouds rested. It
was chilly.
It was the most exciting meet of the year. It was sooo close
on both sides. The boys lost to Chariho by three points while the
girls lost to EG by only one point. Wow!
The boy's race was fairly close. At the third checkpoint (fence
opening near the woods) South's Ryan Lynch had only a six-foot
lead on the Chariho runner. The front pack was still congested.
At the fourth checkpoint (the track) Ryan had increased his lead
to 40 yards and cruised to an eight second win.
Graham Heffernan had a great run. He was in fifth place at the
fence. At the track he was in 8th but with a great finish he
moved up to sixth, just ahead of teammate Michael Wright.
Colin Murphy once again edged David Stanhope with his fine
finishing sprint.
Meredith Crocker once again ran alone. By the time she hit the
track, she had about 200 yards on the second place EG runner,
Bennet.
Who would get the team win? The top ten was cluttered with
South and EG runners. South had all five scorers in the top ten,
EG had four. The exception was Chariho's Rebecca Anderson in
8th. EG's last scorer got 11th (10th in the dual with South). It
was going to be close. The biggest margin between any two runners
in the second to ninth places was nine seconds.
(5,2,9,1,5,4,2 seconds respectively)
Courtney Adham was under the weather. Cold, maybe even mono.
Beth Bouchard still had shin problems. Marissa Bozarth also had
shin problems and was being treated by a doctor. Kelly Dolan, a
junior who ran last year, has returned to the team but is not yet
eligible to run. She has had right tibia problems in the past.
Prout won their first girls' meet of the year, beating Narr.
It was nice to see the Serdakowski sisters from Chariho. They
used to live in South Kingstown. Anne, a senior, runs XC for
Chariho while she attends URI. Mary, 10th grade, is a nationally
ranked high school hurdler. She says she doesn't really know what
it means to be nationally ranked.
Mr. Castro was there from the NT. He didn't know about those
crazy quote marks that the Times uses; he doesn't key in his
story. ``NT Quote' vs "Normal Quote".

Avengers defeat SK by one
By KEN CASTRO
WOOD RIVER JUNCTION - South Kingston and East Greenwich
wasted little time in getting to the main event on
Monday afternoon in a long awaited clash of cross
country unbeatens. With all the moves and intrigue of a
classic chess match, East coach Vin Petisce's margin of
victory came down to his fifth runner who provided a one
point edge for the Avengers.
Jessica Bennett who was competing in only her second
meet of the season because of previous injuries moved
one spot ahead of South's fifth runner less than 800
meters from the finish to secure the win. For Petisce,
who admits he had put pressure on his team during the
week leading up to the meet, the finish brought welcome
relief. "South was embarrassing us at the mile mark.
That's why I was outside (of the finish area)
screaming," he said.
Sherry Hathaway's Rebels initiated the action early with
Meredith Crocker being the aggressor from the gun. At
the mile mark a trio of South Kingstown runners seemed
to be in control. Erica Sweitzer and Nicole Ambrosetti
had worked to provide a buffer for Crocker against Katie
Bennett and Felica DeAngelis who were 10 seconds in
arrears.
As Crocker pulled away from the rest of the group it
became apparent that positions three through five would
be the deciding factor in the battle of Southern
Division leaders. "They had all their five and we just
had two up there. My other three were lurking and I was
hoping that they would come on in the second half,"
Petisce said. Earlier in the week Hath a way had told
her team to expect a one point swing in the score, "I
told the girls coming in that it was going to be a one
point meet. I figured it out so many different ways and
I thought that it would come down to the line, "Hathaway
said. Crocker clocked 18:40 for the three mile course
while Katie Bennett was more than a half minute behind
at 19:12. "I knew that Jessica Bennett would be the
key, I knew that she would do it but I didn't think she
would do it today. It's a good thing that she did
because my other girls didn't run badly but I expected
them to run a little higher," Petisce said.
Despite the loss Hathaway remained optimistic about the
Rebel effort and wasted little time in looking ahead to
her next meeting with the Avengers, "I could not ask
for anything more than what my girls gave me today. East
Greenwich is strong and the key to beating them is
breaking them up. We have to work on breaking up their
2, 3 and 4 runners at the State Championships."
In the boys event Chariho created a three way tie in the
Southern Division by topping South Kingstown by three
points despite the individual win by South's Ryan Lynch,
who ran with Chariho's Martin Donavan for most of the
circuit before dropping him with less than a half mile
to go.Donavan who was not competiting at 100 percent
according to Chariho coach Bill Haberek pushed Lynch
often exchanging the lead until the South senior surged
ahead. "Martin had a cold today and was'nt up to par
but he ran a great race today," Said Haberek.
Chariho's win was supported by Shawn Horgan (4th) and
Mark Kasabuski (5th) who trailed Narragansett's Adam
Bloom to the line. "Everyone really stepped it up today
and in fact it was really won in the last half mile,"
said Haberek. "Shawn Horgan ran a phenomenal race
running one minute and twenty seconds faster than last
week, and Mark Kasabuski caught and passed two South
kids on the track near the finish so that was a four
point swing."
South coach Karen Johnson said that Chariho's depth
surfaced on their home course, "Their three guys in
after Ryan hurt us. They are such a well coached team. I
have the utmost respect for Bill Haberek. My guys hung
tough though."
Bloom is emerging as a major factor in the talent laden
division according to Mariner coach Jeff McCrave. "Last
week he broke the course record and I think it helped
his confidence. I told him that he can run with any of
these kids and that he shouldn't be afraid of going out
with them."
McCrave sees the trend continuing for Bloom, "His goal
now is to become one of the top 25 runners in the state
and I think that is well within his reach."

Lynch and Wright lead SK to second place
Great run by the guys from SK. You knew they were in the hunt.
Ryan Lynch, Michael Wright, Ryan Murphy, Jon Egan and Graham
Heffernan all scored to give South a second place finish. They
missed first by 20 and held off Westerly by 21. There were about
9-10 schools running.
Mike, the winner, from Toll Gate looked very good. He won by
about 130 yards.
In the freshman race, SK was unable to compete as a team
because Shane Quinn and Henry Huggins were under the weather.
David Stanhope, Colin Murphy, and Robbie Wilson did run.
David moved up from 12th to 9th to 6th as he ran the course.
There were about 42 runners in the freshmen race.
The winner was Eric Lonergan of North Kingstown. He was
probably the smallest runner out there. He finished with a
500-600 yard lead.
3.10 miles, freshmen 2.50.

Lynch, Bloom lead locals
Action from Wednesday's meet
By KEN CASTRO
WARWICK -The Southern Rhode Island Invitational comes at
a time when area harriers are gearing up to compete in
the championship season that looms ahead. By all
indications South Kingstown's Ryan Lynch and
Narragansett's Adam Bloom have their sights set on being
among the leaders when the starting pistol is heard at
the State Championships. Lynch and Bloom were the top
local finishers at the Invitational Wednesday held on
the rolling course at Goddard Park in Warwick.
Lynch placed a solid 5th and Bloom finished in 8th place
after being in the lead bunch throughout the 3.1 mile
race. Mike Malakowski of Toll Gate took the victory in
17:06. Top spots were seemingly determined in the early
going and little changed according to Lynch. "Actually
it was pretty mellow (up front), no one was really
passing each other. Everyone was just keeping the pace,
" he said. The Rebels took third in the team competition
and Narragansett boosted by Bloom's emergence as a top
performer in the Southern Division finished 6th. "I hope
I'm getting stronger. We've been working on hills since
our home course isn't hilly. I think it's helped me, "
Bloom said. "After my last two races I came here with a
lot more confidence." Rebels coach Karen Johnson sees
momentum building for her team "Ryan, Jon (Egan) and
Murph (Ryan Murphy) hung tough together today. That was
the key," said Johnson. "These meets are a lot
different than the dual meets. With our top three guys
up front, we should fare ok in the big meets."
Malakowski took the lead going into the woods for the
first portion of the race and emerged with a strong
group in his wake that remained within striking
distance. In addition to Lynch and Bloom, Dan Huling and
Josh Aldrich of North Kingstown were among those that
challenged the Toll Gate senior. Narragansett coach Jeff
McCrave was pleased with the efforts of Bloom's
teammates. "Our top five all broke 20 minutes. They did
a nice job today."
Chariho captured the Junior Varsity race as South's
David Stanhope placed 6th. The Southern Rhode Island
Invitational was initiated in 1984. Over 200 runners
competed in this season's edition.

Meredith Crocker finishes 10th
Meredith ran an 18:45 for 10th place on the 5,000 meter course

Invitational. Teams from all over New England competed.
Teammate Erica Sweitzer ran 19:54 for 28th.
Nicole Ambrosetti ... 40th.
Kerri Bessette ...... 45th.
Allison Little ...... 54th.
The winner was Ms Landreth from Newburyport in 17:50.
Not sure how the SK boys made out. Hendricken's Jon Kieliszak
ran 15:30 for 5th. The winner was Mr. Edmond from Marshfield in
15:15.

Crocker and SK Girls win
Meredith won by about 200 yards. Erica was about 150 yards out
from second place. South got the team win - great job!
Marilyn Woodford was unable to compete.
Team results: 1. SK 56; 2. EG 61; 3. NK 131
Jerry Bonner, the winner, looks more like a football player
than a runner. Malachowski, the winner of the SoRI Invit came in
fourth. He sprinted the last 200 yards. South's top runner was
Ryan Lynch in 18:16.
Graham Heffernan was there but injured, a knee problem.
There was a girl from Pilgrim running in the boys race, not
sure if she was left over from the girls race or what.
Team results: 1. Hendricken 64; La Salle 103; 3. Cumberland 154.
Ten runners max competed for boys and girls. There was a third
race for those left over, boys and girls.
David Stanhope finished 5th (about 22:00 @7:06) for SK in the
JV race. He let Colin Murphy beat him. Don't know the other
runners because they weren't wearing numbers. Why don't they have
numbers like most teams do? Check back later for further update.
The first four runners were from Hendricken.
There must have been close to 30 schools competing.
Most people didn't like the course, a few did. Sort of an
out-and-back so that the long hill that you go up 1/3 of the way
through, you run down 2/3 through. It was very wet even though
it was a beautiful, brezzy day. The soccer fields were like a
giant sponge, very wet. Kerri's Mom took a picture of the back of
all the girls, splattered with mud.
The runners on the right side of the start seemed to have to
run a hypotenuse to get to the first marker.

Crocker and girls get 1st; Boys get 5th
It was a great day at Ft. Adams and the course was in much
better shape than it was nine days ago. Most runners improved on
their times at the East Bay Challenge.
Meredith "Miss Consistency" Crocker won another one in the
Class B meet. Her teammates ran well also. Nicole, Allison,
Kerri, and Erica. Their score was 33. La Salle was 2nd with 100
and Bay View was 3rd with 105.
The JV squad finished fourth (75) behind Ponaganset (57),
Coventry (64) and NKingstown (67).
Girls' Class A was won by NK; Class C was EG.
The boys race (Class A) was won by Jerry Bonner of Cumberland.
South's Ryan Lynch grabbed 10th. Ryan Murphy got second for
South. That is usually Michael Wright's spot. SCFun is not sure
who came in 3-5 for South. Graham Heffernan was 6th.?
Cumberland (41), Hendricken (42-close), La Salle (54), and
NKingstown (119) finished ahead of South Kingstown (139).
The Boys' JV Team finished 6th (188) behind Hendricken (23),
La Salle (79), Cumberland (94), NK (145), and Rogers (181).
Boys' Class B was Toll Gate; Class C was Ponaganset.

Narragansett's Adam Bloom will be among the local
favorites that will attempt to slice through a threesome
of powerful Class A teams on their way to the podium at
the State Championships on Sunday at Fort Adams State
Park in Newport.
Lynch was just over a minute down on winner Jerry Bonner
of Cumberland at the Class A Championships held at the
historic location last Saturday. Lynch's effort was very
similar to his meeting with Bonner just a week earlier
at the East Bay Challenge also held at Fort Adams. Bloom
led Narragansett to an 8th place finish in the B
division of the Class meet with a 10 th place individual
finish. Bloom was clocked in 18:11 on the rolling,
mostly grass 3.1 mile course.
Cumberland, Hendricken and either LaSalle who finished
in that order last weekend or Toll Gate which edged
Chariho in the B division appear to be heads-up on the
rest of the field going into the meet. Hendricken touts
a pair of top performers in Jon Kielisek and Ryan
McConnel who finished 2-3 behind Bonner at the East Bay
Challenge.
Matt Malachowski of Toll Gate could be in the mix as
well. The Titan garnered a 4th at East Bay and a second
place at the Class B meet. South looks to improve on
their 5th place finish at the Class meet by relying on
their team strength that lies in Mike Wright, Jon Egan
and Ryan Murphy who support Lynch well.
Rebel coach Karen Johnson says that no one should count
her team out of the mix in the big meets, "As many as
five teams that can win it all in, Cumberland,
Hendricken, LaSalle, North Kingstown and Chariho plus as
many as five more could be in there. A team like Chariho
is so well coached that it's possible that they can
upset one of the others as well. Our kids are ready to
go however and just about anything can happen on Sunday,
" Johnson said.
The Rebels are healthy all around according to Johnson,
which should make for an interesting afternoon. Bloom
has emerged as a top runner as the season progressed for
the Mariners and his work ethic should pay off for him
against the top guns competing on Sunday in Newport.
Bloom was in contention throughout the race last week,
and should be ready for a repeat performance this week
as well.
Johnson says that the new course despite being slower
should offer a quality show nonetheless, "We miss the
wooded areas of Bryant College, and our kids are
concerned with the slow times there, but it will be a
great course for spectators to view the action."

Colin Murphy leads SK
The weather was erratic. Mild, then it started to sprinkle.
With the leaders about 80% through the course, monsoon rains
came, lasting just a couple minutes.
Colin Murphy led the SK contingent with a 21st. The first fifty
kids got medals. Shane Quinn was sick and didn't make the trip.
Hendricken and Smithfield dominated the leaders.

Crocker leads way as Rebels post 5th straight title
By BOB LEDDY
Journal Sports Writer
NEWPORT -- Yesterday, Rosie Woodford brought homemade
bracelets to members of the South Kingstown girls'
cross country team. The former Rebel All-Stater -- and
current Brown University freshman distance runner --
handed out the bracelets as good luck charms for her
ex-teammates.
And it worked.
The Rebels not only copped their fifth consecutive
state team title yesterday, but junior Meredith Crocker
emerged from 3.1 hilly, windy miles at Fort Adams State
Park as the 1999 state titlist.
Crocker, who was timed in 20 minutes, 26.3 seconds in
crossing the finish line first, was ably backed up by
three more placers in the top 20: Erica Sweitzer
(fourth in 20:46); Nicole Ambrosetti (seventh, 20:55)
and Kerri Bessette (19th, 21:46).
"You have to look at this team," said a beaming
Sherry Hathaway, the S.K. coach who piloted the other
four Rebel cross country squads to championships. "All
my teams have been wonderful, but [the current team]
has shown determination with a lot of willpower. It's
unbelievable."
Crocker, who finished third at the State Meet last
season -- and who clocked 20:14 in winning the Class B
Championships here last weekend -- set a measured pace
yesterday, utilizing the course's wide-open 400-meters
over two soccer fields to claim her spot.
"I just tried to go out as fast as I could," said
Crocker. "I didn't want to get caught."
Crocker led a tight foursome at the mile checkpoint,
turning in a 6:11 split. La Salle sophomore Erin
Kulasewski, the Rebs' Sweitzer and North Kingstown's
Lindsay Vieira were in there, too, seconds apart.
"I felt I had a lot of energy," said the Maroon's
Kulasewski, whose second-place finish yesterday (20:34)
capped a fine season. "I just tried to stay with the
lead group. I liked the hills."
As the runners made their final turn to the finish
chute, Crocker held a commanding lead. Vieira, the
Skippers' sophomore, came in third in 20:46.
"The whole time, I felt pretty good," said Vieira, a
strong runner who failed to qualify for the State Meet
last year. "I paced myself."
As she emerged from the chutes, Crocker was mobbed by
well-wishers. But none was more welcome than Woodford,
last year's state champion.
"I'm glad she was here," said Crocker, who showed a
reporter one of those Woodford-made good-luck
bracelets.
"I'm really happy for her," Woodford said. "She
really speeded it up at the end. I felt nervous, but
she looked really confident, even when (Kulasewski) was
on her."
"I can't explain how I feel today," said Hathaway,
who was also voted Coach of the Year by her peers
following yesterday's meet. "There were so many
rewarding things."
Liz Carlson, Lincoln's freshman sensation -- who last
month won the East Bay Challenge to inaugurate the Fort
Adams course -- was a solid fifth yesterday. Carlson,
one of numerous success stories to emerge from the
state's Junior Olympic program, timed 20:48 yesterday.
"I wanted to go out with the top pack," she said.
"It was hard to breathe with the headwind."
Finishing second in the team scoring yesterday was
North Kingstown, with 78 points. Coach Bob Pearson's
Skippers finished ninth in the state last year. Behind
Vieira was junior Margaret Loughlin in 14th place
(21:23), Kaitlin Buckley (16th, 21:28) and freshman
Shannon Leary as the third team scorer at 22nd place
(21:56).
East Greenwich, which won the Southern Division and
Class C titles this season (the first time the Avengers
have achieved that), finished third with 80 points.
Freshman Nicole Millette was the Avs' top placer,
finishing sixth in a time of 20:53.
"We didn't have a great day," said Vin Petisce, the
Avengers' coach. "We expected to make a run at South
(Kingstown). I thought we could get five kids in the
top 20."
Tolman senior Tiffany Carroll finished eighth in 21:11,
followed by Chariho freshman Rebecca Anderson (21:13).
Ponaganset junior Brandy Bates came in 11th in 21:17,
and Westerly's Emily Anderson finished 12th in 21:20.
Cranston West, which hasn't had a female runner in the
top 14 of a cross country meet in a number of years,
got one yesterday, as sophomore Nicole Renzulli
finished 13th in 21:22.

Crocker leads Rebs at New Englands
EAST HARTFORD, CT - Meredith Crocker closed out an
outstanding cross country season Saturday by becoming
the top finisher among Rhode Islander's with a 16th
place finish at the New England Cross Country
Championships.
In the process the South Kingstown junior led her
teammates to a sixth place tie in the team standings.
Crocker's time for the 3.1 mile circuit held at Wickham
Park in Hartford was 19 minutes and 15 seconds. Codie
Vachon of Manchester's Central High School in New
Hampshire took the individual crown in 18:20. Vachon's
team also captured the team championship. Teams from
Massachusetts were noticeably absent from the affair,
choosing to compete in their State meet.
As a team the Rebels were visible in the midst of the
action throughout the race on the hilly course. Erica
Sweitzer (83rd), Kerri Bessette (87th), Nicole
Ambrosetti (99th) and Allison Little (108th) comprised
the scoring for South which tied with Vermont's Union
-32 High School with 219 points. Manchester Central
registered 87 points in gaining the victory.
North Kingstown was led by Lindsay Vieira who helped the
Skippers finish 15th in the overall team picture. Vieira
was timed in 19:42 and garnered 38th place. In the boy's
race, both Hendricken (8th) and LaSalle (11th) bested
Ponnagansett (13th), which won the state crown at Fort
Adams State Park a week ago. Jon Kieliszak of Hendricken
was the leading Rhody finisher in 9th place.
Another Granite State school came out on top in the
boy's team competition as Londonderry High registered
109 points to take the title.
