Entering into her sixth year at the helm of the Rhode Island softball
squad, Melissa Jarrell finally has the program going in the right
direction: a quality staff, improved facilities, and a group of committed
players. The Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in 1994, Jarrell has positioned
her squads as prominent contenders for the conference title year after
year, leading her team to a 115 - 125 - 1 overall record since her arrival.
Prior to the Rhode Island, Jarrell served as the head coach at California -
San Diego for two seasons. While at San Diego she compiled a 44-43 overall
record and a berth in the 1991 NCAA Regionals and a top twenty final
ranking. An assistant coach at perennial Division III power Trenton State,
Jarrell led the Lions to three NCAA appearances and the 1989 NCAA
Championship title. While at Trenton State Jarrell assisted with a
nationally ranked team that finished second in the nation in 1990 after its
1989 title run. In 1988 she helped to guide the Lions to a fourth place
finish in the nation. During her final year at North Carolina, she served
as a volunteer assistant for the Atlantic Coast Conference power Lady Tar
Heels.
A four year letter winner at North Carolina, Jarrell was selected team
captain and MVP in 1987. Selected to the all-tournament team at the
Carolina Invitational (1987) and the East Carolina Pirate Classic (1986) as
the backstop for the Lady Tar Heels.
A member of the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association and the New England
Women's Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association, Jarrell serves on the
NCAA Northeast Region All-America Committee.
