URI Women's Basketball
1998-1999

Compliments of "Friends of URI Women's Basketball"

[This should explode out of any frame!] (Yes, SCFun needs a new picture!) Head Coach, Linda Ziemke, calls a time-out during the Virginia Tech game at Keaney Gym during the '96-'97 season. URI's '98-'99 was not a good one. Coach Ziemke got suspended a few days before the Xavier game on 1/22. Dayna Smith became acting head coach. Ziemke resigned 2/19/99. URI won its only league game on Sunday, Feb 21, when they beat St. Bonny in OT. On April 14, 1999, Belinda Pearman was named the new head coach.

she had her most successful season ever with a 21-5 record and the
team's first invitation to the "NCAA's". The team finished third
in the Atlantic-10 Conference. Linda was named Atlantic 10 Coach

Linda puts academic achievement on the highest plateau. Every player
that has completed her eligibility with Zemke has graduated with a
"meaningful" degree.

Russia

  Rossiyanka 69, URI 52
Freshman Colleen Mullen started at point guard along with Ela
Lapciuk, Amber Jansen, Nikki Blakemore, and Dena Cocchiola. There's a
girl from Rhode Island playing. Love Kuyateh, from Mount Pleasant.
Did she go by Yatar Kuyateh last year?
Keisha Bolton, from Jamaica, was in street clothes.
Missing from last year's squad were Sarah Grazier, Shannon Murray,
Tiffany Steele, and, we hate to say it, the great Tanya Hvizdak? What
happened? Every year the team seems to lose about 3-4 players.
What was with the softball team and all those pizzas? The President
was there. He has always supported the women.

Nov 18, 1998 (Game #02): URI hosts Buffalo

  Buffalo wins, 71-60
URI almost came back but they fell short. Behind by ten at the
half, they fell behind by about 15 points before pulling within
4 or 5 but they just couldn't pull it off. Nice try but too many
turnovers, traveling calls, double dribbles, etc., couldn't be
overcome. Even with 3-pointers down the stretch by Mullen and
Pacheco.
The Pep Band (where's Krista?) continues to keep fans away by the
droves. They won't even let the visiting team get introduced before
they blast away at your eardrums. What a shame!
Collen Mullen had some banner toting friends/relatives in the
stands.
Buffalo had a Tiffany Bell - not St. Raphael's Tiffany Bell who
is now at UPenn.
The team is wearing Reebok's this year. Mostly white with some
gray accents.
Half-time saw the introduction of the "Pepsi Porch". The winner of
the half-time shoot-out will be treated to a seat in the Pepsi Porch
at the next game. He/she and a friend will be treated to all the
junk food that they can eat.
Donna Strike was absent. Hope there is no problem. Alum Kerry
Giroux was in the stands. The President, Mr. Carothers, was there.

Nov 20, 1998 (Game #03): URI hosts Brown

URI gets their first win, 72-60
It was a good win. The momentum went back and forth. URI was up by
three at the half. Then Brown had a 10 point run thanks to an
effective press. Then URI had a 16-3 run. It was anybody's ballgame.
Ela Lapciuk's 3-pointer gave them some breathing roon at 59-55.
Dena Cocchiola had a nice steal and went the length of the floor
for a layup and a foul, which she converted, 64-55. Ela again
had a nice turn to her right deep in the paint for a left handed
scoop shot that made it 66-56. Amber Jansen fought off about
three defenders for a great put-back on a Nikki Blakemore rebound,
68-58.
Tanya Hvizdak, who transferred to Bentley, is not playing because
of a torn Achilles tendon [corrx: ACL reconstruction]. Donna Strike
is taking some time off. SCFun finds that the URI program is carrying
season statistics. So maybe SCFun will update its stats at the bottom
of this page periodically.

Dec 01, 1998 (Game #05): URI hosts Providence

URI decides they're not going to lose this one, beats PC 63-55
URI went on a roll at the start of both halves but it didn't look
good when PC tied the game at 45-all with 6:30 left. But URI got
tough and pulled it out.
URI jumped out to a 16-4 lead at the "quarter". They looked good
on many of their offensive and defensive transitions. Unfortunately,
they went to the locker room up by only one at 29-28.
In the second half, PC didn't score for the first 5:27 as URI
built a 37-30 lead.
When PC pulled ahead briefly for the first time in the game,
URI rose to the occasion. Nikki Blakemore made it 50-49 from down
deep. Gibson had a 17 foot jumper from the side and converted her
free throw to make it 53-51. A nice rebound by Blakemore led to a
Jansen spin move for 55-51. Lapciuk, from Mullen, with another spin
plus a free throw and things started looking better, 58-51.
Blakemore with a pump fake and then the easy basket for 60-53.
Then PC did the fouling thing - free throws by Mullen, Lapciuk,
Mullen and the game was over, 63-55.
For the night, Dena Cocchiola had some tough rebounds. Sarah
Reynolds had a nice assist on a bounce pass.

Peggy Lynch, the state prosecutor and high school ref, officiated
the game - was she subbing for someone?
There was a new woman in uniform for URI. Wendy Romblad, a member
of the volleyball team was wearing Donna Strike's old number. Wendy
looks like she has a nice touch in the warmups.
SKHS's trainer from last year, now working for URI, had some
action. Colleen Mullen took a hard fall on her wrist and needed some
taping. Nikki was also hurting late. Sarah Reynolds, a great passer,
seemed to have an existing right wrist problem.
Keisha Bolton, from Jamaica, was not on the bench.
PC's Farrah Thomas gave 100% on defense. She went to the floor
in a collision with Ela and stayed down for awhile. Looked like she
bumped her forehead. She later came back in.
Didn't see PC's Dani Trippany who is 6-5. She may have been the
woman on crutches.
The announcer warned of a sellout when UConn comes in Saturday
night.

Dec 05, 1998 (Game #06): URI hosts UConn

URI vs UConn - UConn wins impressively 88-42
It was a big night a Keaney Gym, almost a sell-out. Attendance
was 3,353. Even the team doctor had to sit elsewhere. It was
so strange to see the parking lot full and to see so many buses.
UConn is very, very impressive. They give 100% the whole game.
It would have been fun to see URI try to press and trap and double
team to the degree UConn did and to see how UConn would have
reacted.
Ela Lapciuk took an elbow to the head in the second half and
went down for awhile. Before the team doctor could get there, the
trainer had her up and walking to the bench. She came back.
Coach Geno looks so small standing next to Linda. Keisha Bolton
reappeared on the bench for URI.
SCFun checked to see if CNN-SI had a write-up. Then didn't, but
they did have the probable lineups posted. They had long-gone
Shannon Murray starting at guard for URI in place of Mullen.

Jan 16, 1999 (Game #15): URI hosts St. Joseph's

  URI fades, losing 71-55
URI was in this game but just couldn't finish. They got within
two a couple times late in the second half. The first time was
thanks to a 3-pointer by Ela and then a spin move by Amber.
St. Joe's was undefeated in league play. Susan Moran was the
big gun for St. Joe's. From Ireland and listed at 6-1; yet she
is a couple inches shorter than Ela, who's listed at 5-11.
Anywayssssss, she was 8-11 and 7-9 for 23 points.
Collen has a nice double spin fake. She also showed off her
behind the back pass. Sarah Reynolds displayed some good hands
on defense.
One of the refs had a "contact" (eye) problem. As a result
there was some confusion on the shot clock. URI did well even
though they only put one second back. URI managed to get fouled.
Speaking of the refs - the Rams only took 10 free throws.
Karyn Lima appears to be gone from the URI roster.
Love Kuyateh was in street clothes with her right thumb
bandaged.
The program no longer includes stats, so there goes that
update.

  URI loses to Xavier, 69-57
Turmoil has beset the URI team. Rumors became reality when
Friday's ProJo (1/22) reported the suspension of coach Linda
Ziemke.
She has been suspended for the next two games. No reason was
given. Some say it has nothing to do with wins and losses.
Will her suspension be lifted when the team returns to URI
for a noon game on Super Bowl Sunday? Dayna Smith is acting.
  Rhoda got 13.
The lineup order as listed in ProJo has been all over the
place for the last few games. Who is really starting?

Jan 31, 1999 (Game #19): URI hosts St. Bonaventure

  URI fades and loses 68-59
It was winnable but it didn't happen even though URI led much
of the second half.
Alisa Fazio played great for the Bonnies. She has a wicked,
flat, and deadly shot from 3-point land. Tanesha James, the
black girl, was also tremendous for St. B.
The pep band continues to show absolutely no class by drowning
out the introductions for the other team. That is so bush-league.

The coaching controversy continues. Below are two articles from
this past weekend. ProJo also had an article a week ago where
they quoted Karyn Lima. Sadly, not only has she left the team but
she has left school also.
ProJo's Kevin McNamara had a piece on the situation in Sunday's
ProJo (1/31). "I know virtually no one cares about URI women's
basketball ...". Kevin sounds like a mean-spirited little boy.
Certainly the lack of fan interest could be rephrased to not be
quite so negative.
(If these reporters are so interested in getting at the truth,
why hasn't their journey for the truth led them to URI's web site
and ultimately to SCFun. SCFun hasn't gotten one e-mail on the
matter.!?)
Donna Strike was helping with half-time activities yesterday.
Maybe she felt safe in showing up knowing her old coach wouldn't
be there.
SCFun would guess that a few team boosters weren't there, their
loyalties being more with the coach than with the team itself.
It must be like a wake at Coach Ziemke's home.
How's recruiting going? It's amazing how many RI high school
stars go to the Metro Atlantic Conference.
By the way, the articles keep saying eight girls have left the
program in the last two years. SCFun comes up with eleven.
What three is SCFun counting that it shouldn't be and why?
Erin Fuller, Jaime Gray, Tanya Hvizdak, Aimee Pardington,
Tiffany Steele, Donna Strike, Sarah Grazier, Carrie Lightfoot,
Shannon Murray, Holly Wickstrom, and Karyn Lima.

Here are two articles on the coaching situation.

Former player shares time spent with Rams

KINGSTON - Trying to find individuals directly involved
with the University of Rhode Island women's basketball
program who are willing to talk about the recent
suspension of head coach Linda Ziemke is like trying to
find a needle in a haystack. No one - not Ziemke herself
or athletic director Ron Petro or any of the current
players - have offered up any significant statements
regarding the issue.
Ziemke, URI's 10th-year head coach who has compiled a
record of 105-164, was reportedly suspended last weekend
due to player discontent. Assistant coach Dayna Smith, a
former star player for Ziemke, has taken over the squad,
which has seen eight players, including 1996 Atlantic 10
Rookie of the Year Jaime Gray, quit the program over
last two years.
Another of those players, Tanya Hvizdak, was reached on
Tuesday evening by The Narragansett Times. Now at
Bentley College, in Waltham, Massachusetts, Hvizdak is
content, happy to have URI in her rear-view mirror.
Hvizdak wouldn't come right out and criticize Ziemke's
coaching philosophy, but the junior point guard painted
a picture of unhappiness when describing her time with
the Rams.
``I was a starter and I was happy with the time I was
getting [on the court]. I loved my teammates and I loved
the school, but it was a situation that just didn't work
out,'' said Hvizdak, who spent two seasons at URI.
``After my first year, I had no thoughts about leaving.
But towards the end of my second year I thought more
about what I wanted to do, and I realized it was time to
leave.''
Hvizdak, who averaged 5.6 points and 3.3 rebounds in
22.9 minutes of play last season, said she was surprised
to learn of the current situation with the Rams.
  ``Obviously, there's a reason for it, but I was a little
surprised,'' said Hvizdak, who played on teams that
compiled a combined 13-41 record during her two-year
tenure.
When asked if she had any specific problems with
Ziemke's coaching style, such as a lack of discipline,
Hvizdak replied: ``She was an authority figure, and I
have respect for authority. I think every player goes in
hoping for the best, but I have no regrets about my two
years there.''
While a player at West Woods Christian in Connecticut,
Hvizdak was recruited by several Division I programs,
but Ziemke's approach worked best in luring her to
Kingston.
``URI's a wonderful school, with a winning program, and
Coach Ziemke and I hit it off right away. That was
definitely a draw in the beginning,'' said Hvizdak,
describing why she chose the Rams.
After deciding to leave URI, Hvizdak, who was a team
captain during her sophomore season, would have
preferred to continue playing Division I basketball, but
she did not want to sit out a year, as is necessary
under NCAA transfer regulations. Thus, she opted for
Bentley, a Division II school with a strong tradition.
Hvizdak, however, tore her anterior cruciate ligament
during the first week of practice, and was redshirted
this season.
``We've got a great team here,'' she said. ``We're 19-2
and ranked sixth in the nation. And we've got a great
coach [Barbara Stevens] who needs just three more wins
to become the winningest coach in New England.''
Still, Hvizdak says she still keeps her eyes on the
Rams. ``I check up on them, and I wish all of them the
best of success,'' she said.
According to URI Sports Information Director Mike
Ballweg, who was reached late Wednesday afternoon, there
was no new news to report on Ziemke's status. Petro, the
athletic director, was unavailable for comment.
The Rams, who are 4-14 overall and 0-8 in the Atlantic
10, will be in action again on Sunday when they host St.
Bonaventure at Keaney Gym at 12:00 p.m.

Coaching controversy at URI needs to end

SOUTH KINGSTOWN -- With their head coach still under
some strange sort of suspension and their new coach
trying to hold things together, the University of Rhode
Island's women's basketball team lost another game
yesterday.
``But I can't fault the effort,'' Dayna Smith was
saying shortly after her Rams had dropped a 68-59
decision to St. Bonaventure in an Atlantic 10 match at
Keaney Gym on the URI campus. ``This one was winnable.
Very winnable. But we seem to get to a certain point in
the second half where the other team puts it into
second gear and we don't. It has happened a lot.''
The loss was the Rams eighth straight and left them
with a 0-9 record in the A-10 and 4-15 overall. It also
left them trying mightly not to make excuses for their
current plight.
``A lot of things are happening away from the court but
that's not what's getting us beat,'' said Smith.
``That's what I told the players. Basketball things are
getting us beat. They have to forget the turmoil off
the court.''
  Turmoil? Did someone say turmoil?

Let's see.
The coach under suspension is Linda Ziemke, who was
``temporarily'' relieved of her head-coaching duties
nearly two weeks ago by Ron Petro, the school's
athletic director, following complaints by some URI
players over the way in which the basketball program
was being run. Eight players have left the program in
the last two years.
Among other things, Ziemke, who was in her 10th season
as head coach, was criticized for running dull
practices and for not communicating well with her
players.
Officials said yesterday that Petro won't make a
decision on Ziemke's status until at least the middle
part of this week. In any case, Petro was not at Keaney
Gym yesterday; he was at the Super Bowl game in Miami.
That left things to Smith, 24, a former star player at
URI and an assistant the last three years under Ziemke.
Smith has been given the task of trying to turn things
around.
Smith made her head coaching debut in losses at Xavier
(69-57) and Dayton (95-57) but then had a full week to
work her players.
``I just tried to keep them focused on basketball,''
said Smith. ``We scrimmaged a lot, just hard-nosed
stuff. We emphasized hard work, discipline, getting up
and down the floor, diving for loose balls. You could
see it pay off a little today.''
It was Super Sunday but it didn't end up super for the
Rams. A sparse but spirited gathering of 739 loyalists
saw them walk off with a 20-19 lead in a
turnover-plagued first half. And when they raised their
lead to five points, 35-30, on a 3-point bomb by
sophomore Rhonda Pacheco of Fall River midway into the
second half, it looked as if the Rams might be on their
way to ending their long victory drought.
However, the Bonnies stayed close, gradually cut into
the deficit and finally took the lead, 42-41, on a free
throw by forward Hilary Waltman, who was fouled driving
to the basket. The Rams never got the lead again. They
fell back by 11, cut it to four in the closing seconds,
but that was it.
The players, who had been ordered not to speak about
the controversy, seemed intent on trying on trying to
put the whole thing behind them.
``Whatever has been done is past, '' said Pacheco.
``We're just here to play basketball. It's over with.
We played hard the whole game today. We stayed together
but we need to start winning some games, we know
that.''
Dena Cocchiola, a junior guard from Prospect, Conn.,
said she was impressed with the team's ``enthusiasm and
hustle.''
``I think it's going to come together for us,'' she
said. ``The practices are different now; in a way, it's
a different team. Dayna Smith really has us go at it as
opposed to the past when we really didn't practice but
stood around a lot.''
If the URI players feel any extra pressure because of
the controversy, they're not admitting it.
``I don't feel any more pressure than before,'' said
Amber Jensen, a 6-foot-2 center sophomore center from
Manlius, N.Y. ``We have to forget what's going on off
the court and play to the best of our ability. Today
was a step up for us. We just have to break through all
the stuff that's going on around us and hopefully
things will get better in time.''
When yesterday's game was done and the Rams had
retreated to their dressing room, they returned to the
floor to sign autographs for the many children on hand.
It's a fan-friendly tradition the Rams adopted a few
years ago for all home games and it still paints a
pretty picture.
But right now, the rest of the picture is not so
pretty. Ron Petro would do well to get back from Super
Bowl XXXIII and sort things out.

Feb 14, 1999 (Game #23): URI hosts VA Tech

  URI loses a Heartbreaker
URI was up by one point with the ball. About 14.4 seconds left.
The inbounds went to Amber Jansen who was immediately clobbered,
falling into the VT bench. URI fans were outraged. They wanted a
technical on the flagrant foul but didn't get it. Amber missed
both. Gloom and doom! Then things got a little sloppy with VT
making two trips to the charity stripe; going 2-2 and later,
1-2, to win, 64-62. Unbelievable!
The line at the end of the game to give Amber Jansen a big hug
stretched all the way out to Route 138. Sources say Amber was far
from 100%, playing with the flu/pneumonia.
It's assumed that the Rams ran out of time-outs with 1.6
seconds to go and inbounding. SCFun was hoping they would bring
back this professional rule from the 1950's where, if you call
time-out when inbounding at the other end in the last two
mintues, you get to inbound from mid-court when time resumes.

But let's start from the beginning. VT with one loss in the
West. URI without a win in the East. David vs what's his name?
It was a weird atmosphere. Welcome to the Twilight Zone. Was
a spell cast over this game? There was a different feel to this
game before it even started. The fans were into it. The players
were high-five-ing each other with smiles on their faces as they
approached the bench to start the game. Even during the game they
were seen smiling now and then. Nikki Blakemore even joined the
cheerleading squad during one time-out. Rhonda Pacheco, with
a fancy hair-do, seemed especially enthusiastic.
The man to man defense by two teams was more fun to watch
then the offense. It seemed like the D was turned up a couple
notches by both teams.

  Bits and pieces:
Nikki showed some great hustle on a rebound, then again.
18-17: Basket by Amber gives URI the lead.
26-27: Ella has a nice underhand and then back again for another.
28-30: Nice spin move by Rhonda. She then needed time to adjust
her contact. "Stay on the floor", said the ref.
Halftime.
Ela not happy as she picked up her third foul early in
second half. Was Ela trying to cover a mistake by one of her
  teammates?
Amber and Nikki also got their third fouls, early second half.
34-36: Nice rebound by Rhonda and a quicky pass to Nikki right
next door, under the basket, to come within two points. The
  crowd loved that one.
36-37: Meghan Gibson with a turnaround.
42-43: Drive by Nikki.
44-43: And again, another Nikki drive along the right baseline.
46-43: Amber's rebound off a Dena shot and the assist to Ela.
Steal by Nikki.
49-43: Ela's 3-pointer. VT calls timeout.
Big rebound by Dena.
52-47: Rhonda's 3-pointer.
56-55: VT scores. Fans outraged, felt VT didn't beat the shot
  clock.
57-57: After exchanging steals, a charging call (?) against VT.
VT fans are now outraged. URI A.D. Ron Petro tries to calm
down one VT fan. They end up shaking hands. 3:40 left.
59-57: Hook by Amber.
Charging call on VT. 2:48 left.
59-58: 1:42 left. URI perhaps too excited, rushing their shots.
59-59: Free throw by VT; travel call against VT, 1:14 left.
59-61: Steal and basket by VT, 50.6 seconds left.
61-61: Dena to Amber. Amber fouled.
62-61: Amber free throw, 39.5 seconds left.
URI's ball to inbound, 14.4 seconds left.
62-61: Amber clobbered on inbounds, misses two, 12.7 secs left.
62-63: Two free throws by VT as the play gets sloppy.
62-64: After a loose ball and a scramble, VT fouled, makes one.
Heatbreaker.

One URI fan felt VT was not starting their best five and that
Seaver should have started. She wasn't injured; never did
play. Check her stats. Her career seems to be going in reverse
from a great freshman year.
Former URI standout Ann Kelsen was in the stands. Donna Strike
doesn't know if she will return next year. What was Dena's mother
doing playing the clarinet with the Pep Band? Nobody seemed to
like the refs today.
Below is the CNN-SI story. They think the game was played in
Providence. Might as well use their stats also. Much better.

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island (Ticker) -- Katie O'Connor hit two free
throws with 12 seconds left to give Virginia Tech a 64-62 win
over Rhode Island in an Atlantic 10 Conference contest.
Rhode Island's Amber Jansen missed two free throws with 13
seconds remaining, O'Connor grabbed the rebound and was fouled by
Nikki Blakemore. O'Connor's two free throws gave the Hokies
(23-1, 13-1 A-10) a 63-62 lead.
Amy Wetzel stole the ball to thwart the Rams' possession and
subsequently made a foul shot with two seconds left.
Virginia Tech used a 14-8 run in a span of less than eight
minutes to turn a six-point deficit into a 57-57 tie with 5:15
left. Williams keyed the spree with six points and Wetzel added
five.
Nicole Jones hit a layup to give the Hokies a 61-59 advantage
with 56 seconds left, but Jansen's three-point play 17 seconds
later gave the Rams their final lead.
Blakemore paced Rhode Island with 19 points, while Jansen and
Ela Laciuk added 16 apiece. The Rams fell to 4-19 and remained
winless in 13 conference games despite scoring 27 points off a
season-high 30 turnovers by Virginia Tech.
Jones led the Hokies with 21 points on 9-of-10 shooting from
the field, while Wetzel added 12. They shot 60 percent (12-of-20)
from the floor in the second half. Virginia Tech has won four in
a row since suffering its first loss to Xavier on January 29.

  GW wins, 68-60
ProJo says Amber Jansen had her 9th double-double (points/rebs)
and leads the A-10 in that category.
It was nice to hear from Jayme Yarger this week. She played

sixth man in, often the one to spark the team with some big
3-pointers. If there are any other alums/friends of URI BB,
drop a line to SCFun.

  URI loses; Ziemke resigns
Ziemke resigns. SCFun grabbed the ESPN write-up. It's below.
ESPN's "232-291" record for ten years is an obvious error.
SCFun has 105-163, not counting the games where Dayna was
the acting head coach. ProJo has her at 105-164. ESPN must
have meant career record, not the last 10 years.
Linda had a 127-119 mark in her 10 years prior to coming
to URI. Do the math. It still won't prove. The wins do but
the losses don't. ??
Also, the 57-30 is from '93-'96; not the '92-'96 as stated
by ESPN.
SCFun would like to wish Linda the best for the future.
It was URI's last home game. Where was Ela - sick?
SCFun couldn't make the game. It regrets not being able to see
Wendy Romblad score.

Rams coach steps down

ESPN.com news services

KINGSTON, R.I. -- Unlucky No. 13 apparently signaled
the end of Linda Ziemke's 10-season reign as Rhode
Island women's basketball coach.
Ziemke, the fourth coach in the 24-history of the
program, "requested her release" Friday, three days
after the team extended its longest losing streak in
a decade to 13 games with a 68-60 defeat at George
Washington.
Athletic director Ron Petro and Ziemke agreed the
school should "go in another direction." The Rams
are 17-61 since their lone appearance in the NCAA
Tournament in 1996.
"I have given everything I have to this program,"
Ziemke, 47, said. "While we have accomplished many
things, including a first-ever NCAA appearance, I
have concluded that it is time for me to move on to
new challenges."
Ziemke posted a 4-20 mark in 1998-99 and went
232-291 in 10 seasons with Rhode Island. After
starting her Rhode Island career at 31-81, Ziemke
went 57-30 from 1992-96, including a school-best
21-8 mark in 1995-96.
Assistant coach Dayna Smith will take over for the
rest of the season on an interim basis.

Washington

URI wins their first Conference Game in OT
  They beat St. Bonaventure, 88-84 in OT. Two had career highs;
Mullen with 21 and Pacheco with 20.
  Congratulations!
Pacheco's six 3-pointers tied a school record for three's in
a game. (This summer, SCFun will try to update URI stats,
now about six years out of date. Had been waiting to use the
update as an excuse to get out of a possible family wedding ..
"Oh, gee, sorry, can't make it, updating the URI Stats that
weekend.")
URI plays Xavier in the A-10 Tournament Friday night. Put
your feelings for URI aside for the moment - what do you think of
a last place team making the playoffs. Doesn't it degrade the
season?
Not that it's important but ProJo didn't show the score
after regulation. Mullen and Pacheco had 13 in OT. Sounds like
OT might have been bombs-away.
Bob reports that Ela has mono. That can take months to beat.
Get well, Ela.

the URI data for "Career Leaders" and the data for "Individual

Rhode Island names Belinda Pearman
Women's hoop coach

Sportsticker

KINGSTON, Rhode Island (Ticker) -- Rhode Island today named
Belinda "Boe" Pearman, the former associate coach of the defunct
American Basketball League's New England Blizzard, as its new
women's basketball coach.

Pearman replaces Linda Ziemke, who spent 10 years at the helm of
Rhode Island but saw her teams post a meager 18-63 record over
the last three seasons, including a 5-22 mark this past campaign
and a last-place finish in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Promoted to associate coach for the 1997-98 campaign, Pearman
helped the Blizzards move from the bottom of the league the
previous season to a second-place finish in the Eastern Division
with a 24-20 record and a playoff berth. New England was 3-10
during the 1998-99 campaign when the ABL canceled the rest of
the season.

Pearman also served as an assistant for 12 seasons (1985-1997)
at Maryland, with the Terrapins compiling a 227-120 record and
capturing three Atlantic Coast Conference titles during her
tenure at the school. She also played collegiately at Maryland,
winning three ACC crowns.
