Nikki Blakemore: SCFun suspects that she may be the "team clown". Is she?
Denna Cocchiola: Prefers culottes over shorts. Likes the jump shot.
Erin Fuller: Likes wild and crazy hair cuts. Carries a piano in her back
pocket.
Megan Gibson: Holds Philly high school scoring record for one game - 41
points.
Will be orthopedic surgeon someday.
Jaime Gray: Atlantic-10 Rookie of the Year in '95-'96. She doesn't really
have a black tooth; it's just that crazy mouth guard she wears.
Tanya Hvizdak: Lots of "leadership" awards in high school. Will sacrifice
her body if needed.
Tasha King: In the 95-96 season, Tasha became only the
eighth Ram to ever score 1,000 points and grab 500 rebounds. She constantly
scores in the double figures. She is a most valuable player.
Aimee Pardington: A walk-on. Has plenty of fans in the stands
as she comes from nearby Hope Valley and Chariho High.
Tiffany Steele: Loves animals. Majoring
in Animal Science.
Donna Strike: Donna "Lee" - a runner also, majoring in elementary education.

Nov 18, 1996 (Game #EX1): URI hosts Club of Novosibirsk, Russia at Keaney
URI opens their season
Dynamo led at the half, 39-38 and then scored 50 points in the
second half to win 89-70. Dynamo, whose players ranged in age from
17-33, was taller and outshot URI from the outside.
At one point in the second half, Dynamo refused to come out on the
court after a time-out because they though URI was playing too rough.
A lot of players (from both sides) seemed to be running into elbows
and going down.
URI started Tanya Hvizdak, Dena Cocchiola, Erin Fuller, Jaime Gray,
and Tasha King.
Possible bad news could be the knee injury that took Jaime Gray out
of the game with 9:16 left. It could be a long season for URI with 7
of 10 players freshmen.
The Russian women seemed thrilled to have their pictures taken with
the URI Mascot at the end of the game.
Nov 24, 1996 (Game #01): URI hosts Providence College at Keaney
URI drops their season opener to PC, 82-67
It was a little like climbing the "greasy pole" that they used to
have in those Italian Festivals back in Portland, Maine. You remember
... the telephone pole with all that grease slopped on and that ring
of green money at the top awaiting the lucky climber. Every time URI
(or the next climber) made some progress up the "pole", they would
hit the next layer of grease and just end up sliding further down.
Although URI trailed from the opening moments, it was a game the
fans were hoping that URI could "pull out". In the first half, URI
tied the game 12-all at the 11:45 mark and after slipping down the
pole, tied it again at the 7:30 mark at 21-all. Another slip and then
URI was within one point with just a minute to go in the half. But
then PC got a few easy baskets for a 40-33 half-time lead.
URI starters Tanya Hvizdak, Dena Cocchiola, Erin Fuller, Jaime Gray,
and Tasha King played great "D" but, except for Tasha King, lacked
outside shooting. Guard Tanya Hvizdak played great and appears
willing to sacrifice her body in the mold of alums Dayna Smith and
Anne Kelsen. Her quick feet and hands resulted in a few steals. But
the offense needs some "punch". Erin Fuller did get a ton of points
under the basket but more are needed from the outside.
In the second half, Tasha King's three-pointer at 10:16 put the Rams
within one basket at 58-56. Then the drought hit. URI did not score
for the next four minutes, until Megan Gibson's basket brought them to
a 66-58 deficit. Good game, Providence.
There was a good crowd of 1,176. Included was the Aimee Pardington
Fan Club of Chariho Land led by C.B. Security is tighter this year -
don't step on "that" floor.
(SCFun was pleased to meet the new URI Assistant Softball Coach,
Beth Stavru.)
Before the game, last year's team was honored for their great year
and their first ever appearance into the NCAA Big Dance. Everyone was
back.
Congratulations to coach Zemke, and her assistants Karen (better
late then never) Sowada, Erik Johnson, and Jessica (from Da Bronx)
Smith. Her players, including the current crop of Tasha King, Erin
Fuller, and Jaime Gray, along with Jayme Yarger, Samantha Herrick,
Sadie Bader, Marty Alber, Kerry Giroux, Marcie Byrd, Dayna Smith, and
Holly Wickstrom.
And last but not least, trainer Joy Rhett and practice players
Brian Morrone and Eugene Buczynski.
Nov 26, 1996 (Game #02): URI hosts Siena at Keaney
URI beats Siena, 80-71, for their first win of the season
Tasha King once again led the way. Siena came out strong and it
looked like it might be a long night. But with URI behind 20-21,
Tasha "jump started" what seemed to be a dead battery. She drove the
lane for two, then came right back with a three-pointer to put URI up
by four, 25-21. Megan Gibson added some key baskets off the bench and
URI went to the locker room ahead, 40-29.
URI played a consistent second half, preventing Siena from digging
out of their hole.
URI needs to get back quicker on D. Siena was able to take advantage
of URI's slow retreat time and again. As soon as Tanya Hvizdak gets
some confidence in her shooting and Dena Cocchiola adds a foot to her
jumpers (she loves that jump shot), the Rams will be hitting on all
cylinders.
Shame on you Jaime Gray for fouling out.
Dec 04, 1996 (Game #03): URI hosts Brown at Keaney
URI in great comeback win over Brown, 77-72
It was a strange game. URI looked bad most of the night. URI
trailed most of the night. Brown played a full court trapping defense
that URI simply could not adjust to. Plus Brown was hitting three
pointers. And yet URI would somehow manage to pull ahead for an
instant here and there ... 27-26, 60-59.
Down the stretch however, it was all URI. Megan Gibson hit with the
shot clock about to run out to bring URI within three 67-70. With 2:20
to go in the game, Jaime Gray hit the 1-and-1 for a 69-70 deficit.
Then a 2-pointer by Gray close-in on the left for a one point lead,
71-70. Then Tanya Hvizdak for two, the winning basket and a 73-70
lead. Brown's Vita Redding's basket closed it to one 73-72 before Gray
hit another 1-and-1 and Gibson got a "sloppy time" basket for the
77-72 win.
Erin Fuller hurt her ankle and was on crutches at the end. Jaime
Gray also seemed to have stomach problems in the middle of the game.
Late in the game, Megan Gibson stole the ball in Brown's end, drove
the left side, pulled up, passed to Erin - where Erin "was", not where
she "was going to be". As the ball went flying past Fuller, Tasha King
came flying down the right and without missing a stride, grabbed the
ball and went in for the layup for the "crowd pleasing play of the
game".
Dena Cocchiola looked good from three point land.
Dec 09, 1996 (Game #04): URI hosts UConn at Keaney
UConn crushes URI, 97-50
Boy are THEY a good team, UConn isn't bad either. UConn does
impress. Kara Wolters might just be the biggest woman SCFun has ever
seen. And when she extends those arms - don't think about getting
cute under the basket.
The girls from URI seemed very intimidated. They played in a trance
at times, not taking open shots, not driving the open lane. Turnovers
were many.
URI played without Erin Fuller who has a bad foot, possibly a stress
fracture. Tiffany Steele filled in for Erin.
Heading towards the half, URI was able to rally and come within 15
as the first half ended with UConn up 40-25. URI even scored the first
five points in the second half and were within a very respectable 10,
at 40-30, before the tide shifted again. UConn outscored URI 57-20
over the last 15 minutes. For URI fans, it was always a challenge to
stay within 10, then 20, then 30 ... to score 50 before UConn got 100.
There is little letdown when the UConn subs get in except at the
center spot. No one can fill Wolter's shoes.
Megan Gibson and Nikki Blakemore looked good for URI. Tanya Hvizdak
had to come out late in the game with blood showing from an elbow to
the mouth. Donna Strike was able to see some action and was able to
work on her 3-point shot.
Attendance was 1,349, a new record. The gym was about 70% filled.
About one fifth of the fans seemed to be from UConn. There seemed to
be much more than the normal number of "bad calls" from the URI
standpoint.
Dec 22, 1996 (Game #07): vs Maine at Portland
Maine easily beats URI, 78-56, before 5,215 fans
URI was ahead for one brief moment. With 3:53 to go in the first half,
URI was up 26-23, but then Maine went on a scoring binge that lasted
well into the second half.
Maine's star player, Cindy Blodgett was very cold in the first 20
but got untracked in the second half and led all scorers with 25
points.
URI looked over matched. Most players seemed to want to get rid of
the ball as quickly as possible and not have anything to do with
Maine's defense. URI had more than their share of turnovers. Maine's
bench is very deep.
Jaime Gray went down in the first half with a leg injury and was
worked on off the floor while the game continued. A few minutes later,
she hobbled back to the bench. She later returned to the game
finishing with 13 points. Tasha King led the Rams with 21.
Maine's local favorite, freshman Jessie Bruyere from Cape Elizabeth,
got into the game late and scored the first two points of her college
career. She is 6-7 and very big, much bigger, for example than UConn's
6-7 Kara Wolters.
The "Dead River Company" hospitality room was full of goodies.
Tabitha King was there. Where was Stephen? Coach Palombo-McCallie was
"coming down" with something and wouldn't shake hands. She spoke
highly of URI as any coach would.
The Maine Cheerleaders were great. Those girls must get 35 feet in
the air. Many had their belly-buttons pierced - ouch.
The music was classic rock 'n roll, much better than that crap that
URI usually plays at their home games.
Jan 09, 1997 (Game #11): URI hosts St. Bonaventure at Keaney
URI gets a much needed win, beating St. Bonaventure 90-81
With wins few and far between, it was nice to see the kids get a win
as URI scored a season high 90 points. URI played well until the late
stages of the game. They were up by 16 points points but as crunch
time approached, they seemed to be looking for ways to lose the game
as the shooting, passing, and attention to detail had them looking
like a high school JV Team. The Bonnies got within three late in the
game before URI was able to turn their skid around.
Erin Fuller was in uniform but saw no action. She should be ready
in another seven days.
Dena Cocchiola is playing great ball, shooting and passing much more
agressively than earlier in the season. Donna Strike had a couple
three pointers and also had the crowd cheering with her "in your face
defense". Nikki Blakemore had a great game. Her confidence grows with
every game. She led URI with 23 points.
Tasha King, scoring 19, moved up a rung on the URI all-time scoring
leader list. She must be 3rd or 4th now - it's hard to hear in Keaney,
the minute the action stops, the announcer or the pep band takes off
and the acoustics are not good.
Jan 21, 1997 (Game #15): URI hosts UMass at Keaney
URI loses to UMass in OT, 81-74
It was a very exciting, emotional game. The kind that comes along
about once a year. It was a small crowd until a few classrooms walked
in and filled the west bleachers. They get credit for attending,
right?
URI held the lead in the early going thanks to Erin Fuller who was
hitting from inside, from the foul line, and from outside. She had 11
points in the first half. Eventually UMass went ahead at 24-23 and
finished the half up by six at 32-26.
URI often seemed confused and unable to get "their shot" as the
bench was constantly counting down the shot clock to the players on
the floor. Tasha King, with two fingers in bandages seemed "out of
sorts". Erin Fuller was not happy with the officiating. The fans were
constantly screaming at the refs for not calling "three second"
violations on UMass.
In the second half, UMass was up by 12, 49-37, when Tasha King
suddenly got hot and hit two 3-pointers. Some more 3-pointers by
Jaime Gray and Dena Cocchiola and it's now a close game with the
clock winding down.
A little later, Jaime Gray pushed and shoved for a basket close in
that cut the lead to 62-59. A couple clutch baskets by Erin Fuller and
the stage was set for Tanya Hvizdak. With about three seconds left and
the the score 69-67 UMass, Kelly Van Huisen missed a free throw. URI
got control of the rebound and sent a pass halfway down the court to
Tanya, who was "floored" just as time ran out. With both teams
standing at half court, the game was in Tanya's hands as she stepped
to the foul line. With little hesitation, she made the first one. Then
she did it again and the crowd went wild. A great comeback.
Unfortunately, the kids ran out of gas in the OT. URI had already
lost Tasha King in regulation with five fouls. Erin Fuller quickly got
her fifth in OT. And then, 1:12 into OT, Jaime Gray went down with a
leg or foot injury. No one touched her unless it happened earlier. She
was just dribbling up court and slowly dropped to the floor.
UMass and Crystal Carroll were too much for the five rookies
(Cocchiola, Hvizdak, Gibson, Blakemore, and Steele) as UMass outscored
URI 12-5 in OT for the 81-74 victory.
If there is such a thing as a "good loss", this was one. Nice job.
Jan 25, 1997 (Game #17): URI hosts St. Joseph's at Keaney
St Joe's defeats URI 84-72
St Joe's looked good; they played some good basketball. They also had
some height, led by 6-4 Jana Lichnerova. Most impressive was 5-9 Amy
Facer, #23. She had some good moves.
Early on, URI led 21-19 but that was the last time. Tasha King had
a nice steal and a left handed lay-up as the first half ended with URI
down by 33-29.
In the second half, St. Joe's was leading 49-37 with 14:00 to go.
A King basket and some three-pointers by Donna Strike and Tasha King
got them within two at 49-47, St Joe's. But St. Joe's was simply the
better team and rolled to a 84-72 victory.
Dena Cocchiola got a "head" to the face and had to leave the game
halfway through the second half when rebounding on a free throw
attempt. After the game, she said in fluent "novacaine" (unfortunately
SCFun doesn't understand "novacaine" and needed an interpreter) that
she got a head to the mouth, forcing a tooth through her lip. She had
stitches inside and outside her lip.
Jaime Gray was on crutches. She wasn't thrilled about "taking" Nikki
Blakemore's mouth guard. It was a "hot potato".
Fans continue to enjoy the defensive play of Donna Strike. Tiffany
Steele and Megan Gibson played well.
At half time, some basketball alumni were introduced. They included
and please forgive the spelling - Marcie Byrd (96), Elaine Collins
(84), Margaret Contaty (76), Marion Clarkin Campbell (42), Kerri
Giroux (96), Val Gorman (89), Jean Kelly (85), Traci Hathaway Luster
(86), Muriel Selfly Mothlin (41), Cynthia Bennet Marr (51), Deb Ferara
(86), Linda Louise Rowle (76), Loretta Santa-Gatta (60), Claire Shaves
Scriptzak (58), Tammy Webster (94), Lou Wright (43), and last but not
least, from the present coaching staff, Dayna Smith (96). The fans
missed Anne Kelsen.
Post game food was good. Chicken Teriyaki, Meatballs, Pasta, Tuna &
Chicken Salad Sandwiches.
Feb 01, 1997 (Game #20): URI hosts Virginia Tech at Keaney
URI hangs tough to beat Virginia Tech, 69-58
The game was up for grabs with three minutes left. URI seized the
moment while Virginia Tech just dug a deeper and deeper hole.
The first half had the score tied at 11-all at 13:24. Virginia
Tech's 6-3 freshman, Kim Seaver, was a scoring machine with short
turn-arounds off the glass. VT's Meg Hunter also was a thorn in URI's
side.
Tanya Hvizdak, playing with a bad thumb and a knee support, had a
3-pointer followed quickly with a field goal. Tasha King also got hot
to help keep URI in the game.
Sloppy passing and poor eye-hand coordination didn't help URI.
At one point, Nikki Blakemore was driving Lynette Nolley crazy.
Nikki was flapping her arms as if trying to swat a bee; it caused a
turnover that was picked up by Tasha King (?) who drove the floor
dishing off to Nikki for the score. The first half ended 35-35.
Nikki Blakemore was in an awfully good mood in the second half.
She laughed at an early basket as if that was just the way they had
diagrammed it at half-time. Then, when presented with a wrestling
match with VT's Renee Maitland, she laughed it off and walked away.
Dena Cocchiola showed some quick thinking on errant balls, pushing
them to the open player rather than trying to grab the ungrabable
ball.
Anyways, URI was up by five, 44-39 at 16:09 of the second half.
Tasha King again was leading URI but VT just wouldn't let URI pull
away.
At the 7:00 mark, with URI up 51-48, Lynette Nolley was at the line
for a 1-and-1 and a chance to bring VT within one. But she missed the
front end resulting in a fast break with Dena converting and then the
next time down the floor, Dena did it again.
Kim Seaver left with four fouls at 4:27 with URI up by two, 56-54,
and returned about a minute later and quickly tied the game with a
basket at 58-all. That would be the last time Virginia would score.
URI scored eleven unanswered points for the victory. A basket by
Dena. A missed free throw by Dena but a rebound by Nikki with a dish
to Erin Fuller for two. Dena made a one of a "1-and-1". Then Tanya
Hvizdak camped out at the free throw line as Virginia got desperate.
Three trips to the charity stripe resulted in six points. 69-58,
adios.
Some loose ends ... Nikki's smiles turned to groans in the last 90
seconds as she was in pain at the URI bench with what appeared to be
leg cramps. Erin Fuller played "shooting gallery" and almost picked
off trainer Joy Rhett as she threw her mouthpiece or a wad of gum at
the bench, while running down the court. Where did Mrs. Cocchiola go
to in the second half? SCFun missed her play-by-play commentary.
SCFun is still waiting to see how the "official" URI Web Site
works out. Up until now, it always appears to be in the "construction
phase". If it eventually works out, SCFun will be happy to slip away
into the darkness. Otherwise, we'll hang around until that happens.
(As of 12/23, they appear to be 10-14 days behind in just posting the
scores. As of 1/25, they are about 6 weeks behind.)
