Narr. Times 08-18-95 sports S.C. Waves Fastpitch Softball BARRINGTON - Pierce Imports' South County Waves completed their first season in the R.I. Fastpitch League last Saturday with a third-place finish in the playoffs held at Barrington High School. Competing in the six-team "18 and under" division, the Waves, sponsored by Pierce Imports, faced some of the best pitchers in the state in their final week. In preparation for the playoffs, the Waves traveled to Tiverton for a scrimmage at the high school with its friendly "you slide you die" bluestone infield. Tiverton's Perruzzi sisters, Mindy and Stacey, were a preview of the quality pitching the Waves would see later in the week. The Waves opened the playoffs with an easy 7-0 win against Lee's Gals. Easy, because Lee's Gals could not field a team, giving the Waves the victory by way of forfeit. In the next round, the Waves faced Providence Rec, arguably the best team in the division as well as the league. With their top pitcher on crutches because of a sprained ankle and their number two pitcher in Virginia for a softball tournament, the Waves took advantage and jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first inning when the first four batters scored on a combination of hits and errors and the Waves held on for a 7-4 victory behind some great pitching by Kristen Jeremiah and some fine defensive plays. Jeremiah struck out six and displayed excellent control in gaining the victory. Sarah Stanhope, three hits and two runs scored, Krista Martin, two hits and three rbi's, and Jeremiah, two hits, led the offense. Martin also had a good game at third while the outfield of Lauren Manfred, Christine LeFebvre, and Kate MacLean played heads up ball. In the third round, the Waves and pitcher Kate MacLean moved across campus from the freshman field to the varsity field and faced Barrington High and Kelly Maloy, the top ranked high school pitcher in R.I. Unfortunately for MacLean, the Waves' defense took too many naps in addition to playing one short in the outfield for the last three innings because of a work committment and Barrington took advantage for a 10-0 win. MacLean managed a little revenge with the only hit off Maloy, a double over the right fielder's head as Maloy struck out six before the 10-run mercy rule took effect in the sixth inning. Shortly thereafter, the Waves and Providence Rec, who had eliminated Elmwood Sports at the freshman diamond while the Waves and Barrington were playing, squared off for the second time that day, to see who would come back on Sunday to challenge Barrington for the title. It was a strange game as Providence Rec, desperate to make the finals, kicked the crutches out from under Stacey Soccio, their top pitcher, and pushed her toward the mound. Stacey, who couldn't field bunts and had the first baseman cover on passed balls, went the distance for an amazing performance, a five- hitter, and a 7-2 victory. Kristen Jeremiah went the distance for the Waves. She pitched well and it was still anyone's game going into the sixth with Providence up 4- 2. Christie Ward, fresh from work to help the Waves avoid a forfeit, led the offense with two hits and two rbi's. Julie LeFebvre scored both runs coming off a hit and a walk. Sarah Stanhope and Amy Apicerno had the other two hits. Julie LeFebvre played an excellent first base all day while Kate Letourneau looked good at short with her quick hands. Stanhope spent the day wearing the "tools of ignorance". Barrington won the title on Sunday with a 2-1 victory over Providence Rec. Narr. Times 11-15-95 sports S.C. Waves Fastpitch Softball CRANSTON - Pierce Imports' South County Waves earned six spots on the All-Tournament Teams named recently at the annual R.I. Fastpitch League Awards Banquet at the Cranston Country Club. Pitcher Kristen Jeremiah, catcher Sarah Stanhope, and first baseman Julie LeFebvre of the Waves were selected to the "1st Team", joining Kitty Gilbane, Liz Keenan, Kelly Maloy, Kara Simonsen, and Kathy Standish from tournmanet winner Barrington. Also selected were Liz Coughlin, Ange Elderkin, Meleah Hall, and Stacey Soccio from Providence Rec along with Megan Morris and Jenn Sabatelli from Elmwood Sports. Selected to the "2nd Team" from the Waves were pitcher Kate MacLean, shortstop Kate Letourneau, and left- fielder Christie Ward. 30 -----
