Jun 29, 1997 (Game #01 & #02): Waves visit Zader's Travel in Pawtucket.

Two girls don't show so the Waves have a costly double forfeit for
$54. Two of the opponents played for the Waves and the seven girls
who did show up were able to at least scrimmage.

The Waves plus "two" did lousy the first game but much better in the
second game. After three weeks, the season looks like it could be one
of the worst for the Waves.
(Almeida, Balch, A. Beck, K. Beck, Gregory, Moseley, Paulson.)

Jul 06, 1997 (Game #03): Waves visit Seekonk, MA The Waves' finally began their season with a DH on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. The first game got started a little late as half the team arrived about 4:10 because of traffic problems. Melanie Gregory arrived during the 4th inning because of other commitments. The game was unfortunately a laugher although no one was laughing. The Seekonk pitchers struggled. Seven errors by Seekonk didn't help. Strangely, the Waves went down 1-2-3 in the second inning when they really hit the ball well with three consecutive line drives; Lindsay Wepman to the pitcher, Jen Paulson to the center-fielder, and Kate MacLean to the shortstop. Kim Almeida had a home run in the 4th with two runners aboard. Kacie Beck pitched well, allowing only one hit (Amy blasted one over the left fielder's head) before the time limit stopped the game. Melanie Gregory, in an attempt to "move things along", flyed to center-field so Seekonk could double-up the Waves' runner on second base. Good job, Melanie. Jul 06, 1997 (Game #04): Waves visit Seekonk, MA A much better game. Close until the last inning when the Waves went to bat with about 15 minutes left. The Waves scored 9 runs before the game was called, with two out in the bottom of the sixth, as it was obviously the last inning and the home team was ahead. We let Melanie Gregory get her last at bat before calling it. What was Emily Moseley thinking when she stopped half-way to second base on an attempted steal when a ball was called on the batter? Huh? Kim Almeida looked good in centerfield, "backing up" and also throwing a runner out at second base. Kate MacLean pitched well. In the fifth inning, after a base on balls and a throwing error by herself, leaving runners on 1st and 3rd, she struck out three straight batters. Jul 13, 1997 (Game #05): Waves visit Barrington The Waves were in this game all the way. One bad inning, the 3rd, where Barrington got all their hits for the day really hurt. Some bases on balls and a hit batter didn't help in that inning. Kara Maloy pitched well for Barrington, allowing only three hits, including a double by Jen Paulson, who later scored the Waves' only run. Barrington didn't hit a batter all evening. The Waves never had more than five batters in any one inning. Melanie Gregory had a great defensive game at short. In the fifth, she assisted on two consecutive "6-4 fielder's choices" and then took the next ground ball for an unassisted putout at second. Jess Wood ran the other way on that same ground ball. Later, when the police arrived, Jess confessed and said she was just trying to avoid tempting Melanie to toss the ball knowing there was a high possibility of a "bobble". The Jury is still out. Alicia Beck returned from the disabled list and played well. Kate MacLean arrived late but in the nick of time, as Del's wouldn't let her out on time. She should quit. Lindsay Wepman got stranded on the Cape. The game marked the coaching debut for the Waves' Amy Aiken. Batting ab r h bb k hb Gregory 1 0 0 1 0 0 Paulson 3 1 1 0 0 0 Almeida 3 0 0 0 1 0 K. Jul 13, 1997 (Game #06): Waves visit Barrington Let's forget this game. The Waves looked awful. Heat stroke had probably taken root by this time. The Waves looked like Little Leaguers on defense - you know, where the batter gets a "home run" on a ground ball to the infield. On a couple plays, the Waves couldn't throw the ball away enough. Thank God there are only four bases. Kim Almeida continued to shine in centerfield for the Waves. Kate MacLean went 3-for-4, including a double. Jess Wepman and Kacie Beck also had doubles. Caroline Balch hit well all day but didn't have much luck. All the catchers deserve "atta-boys" or is it "atta-girls" for donning the "tools of ignorance" on such a warm, dead afternoon in beautiful, downtown Barrington. Jul 26, 1997 (Game #07): East Greenwich visits Wakefied Thanks to Katlin Paulson, Mary Gosz, Jen Gregory, and Allison DuPovy for helping the Waves field a team as seven players had other committments. East Greenwich was too strong for the Waves. Jen Stanley pitched the first game but injured her arm when she tripped on first base running out a play. Melanie Gregory had a triple for the Waves. She pitched seven innings, registering 17 strikeouts. The Waves got only two hits - a single by Mary Gosz and a triple by Kacie Beck. The players have got to learn how to swing a bat first; then they can think about hitting the ball. You know Ken Griffey couldn't swing much harder if his life depended on it. Somehow, you know the girls would be swinging a lot more aggressive if their lives depended on it. The hardest problem in coaching girls - to get them to give 100%, i.e., be more aggressive. Jul 27, 1997 (Game #09): Seekonk visits Wakefied Where would the Waves be without Seekonk? Seekonk is the only team the Waves have been able to beat so far this season. There's a lot of admiration for the kids from Seekonk - they keep plucking away; they're much more endearing than those "cocky kids" you runs across every now and then on those great teams - kids that know they can't and won't lose. Fourteen runs in one inning? One would prefer the kids make the last out a little earlier so the team could get some defensive practice. Kacie Beck, Kate MacLean, and Jessica Wood all had "two-hit" games. Beck and Wood both had doubles. Melanie Gregory had a line drive triple over the right-fielder's head. Shelley McDonald impresses with her hustle and attitude. Kate MacLean pitched well in relief. Jul 27, 1997 (Game #10): Seekonk visits Wakefield A different game with a new Seekonk pitcher. She pitched well before being reliefed in the last inning. Seekonk was up 8-3 going into that last inning. (You never know what might be the last inning because of the time limit.) Seekonk's defense was also much better in the second game. But in that last inning, the Wave batters, if not drawing a walk, were able to get some clutch hits. The big hit was a bases loaded triple by the unsinkable, crowd favorite, Emily Moseley. Kacie Beck pitched well and helped her cause with a first inning triple that scored Melanie Gregory for the first run of the game. Aug 03, 1997 (Game #Rainout): Lincoln visits Wakefied The Waves were missing two players as Kacie Beck and Melanie Gregory opted to abandon their teammates and play for East Greenwich. Or did they? Supposedly they were "released" at 5pm when the rains hit Warwick. But why didn't they show at Old Mountain? Stay tuned as we try to get this ironed out. The first game was stopped in the fourth inning when the rains came. With pizza for both teams soon to arrive, the kids headed for their caves parked here and there. It couldn't have been worse. Eventually, the kids did find their way back and most of the pizza and soda was consumed. Lincoln had a well coached, aggressive team. South County looked out of it. The SKHS caoch, Mr. Hodge, stopped by for an inning, just in time to see two potential SK players struggle with fly balls in the outfield for the Waves. Timing! Shelley McDonald continues to look good for South County. Striking out, she started to run towards first just in case the catcher had dropped the ball. You can't coach "game sense" like that. Kim Almeida had a nice blast down the left field line for a double.

Aug 10, 1997 (Game #11): Lincoln visits Wakefield The Waves chose to bypass the NSA's this weekend and take a sure thing with a DH against Lincoln - not that the team had much choice with 80% of its players working during the day, on Saturday. Good move as the NSA's turn out to be a bust. Norm's team from Lincoln came down again after being rained out the week before. He has a good team. Many of the kids play for Lincoln High School. The Waves continually shot themselves in the foot with their poor defense, especially on dribblers in front of the plate. The Waves have never been able to field bunts and come up throwing. Even on easy one-hoppers, with all day to throw the batter out, the Waves continue to throw the ball into the dirt or over the first baseman's head. The kids don't know how to control their emotions and just throw naturally. Lincoln used two pitchers. The first, Lemoine (?), pitched very well. None of the Waves batters can pull the ball, they all swing late. And with all righties (except for Gregory) the Waves were grounding out to first and second all night long. Kate Letourneau, a Waves' alumnus, had a single and double while driving in all the Waves runs. Shelley McDonald and Amy Apicerno had the other two hits. All three Waves strikeouts came in the first inning. A couple late inning rallies by the Waves were snuffed out by either poor base running or "no luck". Kacie Beck pitched well for the Waves, allowing only three hits, but the defensive support just wasn't there. Batting ab r h bb k hb Gregory 2 1 0 2 0 0 Letourneau 4 0 2 0 1 0 Jeremiah 3 0 0 0 1 0 K. Aug 10, 1997 (Game #12): Lincoln visits Wakefield The Waves turned things around in the second game. Although their defense continued to be poor, they were able to get away with it this time. Also, the offense came alive. Shelley McDonald and Emily Moseley both had three-run home runs in the fourth inning, when the Waves scored eight runs. Both home runs went to the gap in right center. Lincoln, like many teams, have their right fielder placed about 30 feet behind their first baseman. It's good for throwing out weak hitters at first but it backfired this time. Emily Moseley went 3-for-4. Amy Apicerno and Kate MacLean had two hits each. Kate's two included a double. Kate MacLean pitched well, allowing three hits. Three of them were bunched in the third inning when Lincoln scored their two runs, highlighted by a double by Laura W. Aug 12, 1997 (Game #13): Waves visit North Kingstown The Waves traveled up Route #1 to Oak Hill and Ryan Park. The park has undergone a major face-lift in the last three years with new fields, concessions, rest rooms, and landscaping. Nice job, North Kingstown. Kate MacLean had a great game for South County. She struck out 14 batters while walking only three while allowing just three hits. Playing under a local rule which allowed a maximum of six runs per inning, the Waves pounded out 19 hits. Wow! Melanie Gregory had a double and a home run while her Chariho teammates Jessica Wood and Emily Moseley had three hits each. Kacie Beck had two hits. South County Waves' defense played great. Kim Warrington, the NKHS pitcher was there. Did she pitch? Probably. North Kingstown only wanted to play one game. After the game ended and the ump left, the kids scrimmaged for one more inning, with rookie pitchers testing their arms. Meghan Kane, a freshman to be at Prout, joined the Waves. Is this the last game of the season? Probably. If it is, the disappointing (rainouts, cancellations, etc.) season ended on a high note with two straight victories.
